MLK Day

Events abound to honor, celebrate Dr. King Images Courtesy City of Tacoma, Bates Technical College, and University of Washington Tacoma Tacoma and Pierce County residents will have many opportunities to mark Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this month. Here is a look at some of the plans City of Tacoma Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" The City of Tacoma's signature event – the 27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration – seeks to build on that message of service and encourages the entire community to join together to celebrate on Mon., Jan. 19, 2015, as a day on, not a day off. The event will take place at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, located at 1500 Broadway, in downtown Tacoma. It is expected to draw roughly 2,000 to 3,000 adults and children. Doors will open at 10 a.m. and the event will start at 11 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of nonperishable food items for the MLK Food Drive benefiting Emergency Food Network. The event will include a performance of "11 Days in the Life of Dr. King," presented by the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts. "Eleven Days" chronicles Dr. King's life and legacy through spoken word vignettes, dance, shadow play and historic images. It focuses on Dr. King's relationship with communities, how he challenged and changed our nation, and his message to honor the dignity and rights of every person. Melannie Denise Cunningham will be this year's keynote speaker. Ms. Cunningham has lived in Tacoma and Pierce County for 42 years, and her career spans several industries including federal, city, and state government; non-profit; radio; television; higher education; and entrepreneurship. She is a strategic thinker and a person who always brings a fresh perspective and positive attitude to any situation or environment.

In addition to free holiday on-street parking and free parking at Freighthouse Square, located at 2501 E. D St., which is easily accessible via LINK light rail from the Convention Center stop located directly in front of the event venue, there will also be signage and personnel directing event attendees to designated complimentary parking stalls that will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. The Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration program is spearheaded by the Tacoma City Council-appointed City Events and Recognition Committee comprised of local community leaders from a broad array of backgrounds and areas of expertise. The City Events and Recognition Committee serves as an advisory and action committee on matters pertaining to City-hosted events and special recognition programs. Members are responsible for planning, reviewing and evaluating events, engaging the community in its fundraising efforts, and soliciting corporate and private sponsorships to leverage funds for City-hosted events, such as the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration. The Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration is also covered and aired on TV Tacoma, which is carried on both the Click! and Comcast Cable systems. On Click!, TV Tacoma can be seen on Channel 12 within Tacoma City limits and in Pierce County, with the exception of University Place, where TV Tacoma can be found on Channel 21. On Comcast, TV Tacoma can be seen on Channel 12 within Tacoma City limits and on Channel 21 in Pierce County. TV Tacoma is not carried on the Comcast system in University Place, but is accessible anywhere on the Internet. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. Bates Technical College Bates Technical College will celebrate Dr. Martin

Luther King, Jr. Day with a "Living Voices" performance. Attendees will hear the story of a young African American student growing up in a small town in Mississippi on the brink of the American Civil Rights movement, and watch as the performer brings to life the issues of civil rights at that time, as well as helps you understand how the fight against prejudice has shaped our history. The event will be held on Tues., Jan. 13, between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Bates Technical College South Campus Auditorium, located at 2201 S. 78th St., in Tacoma. Students can enjoy a one-dollar lunch special (three-dollars for the general public). More information is available online at bates. ctc.edu. One week later, Bates Technical College will participate in a march from the downtown Tacoma campus, located at 1101 S. Yakima Ave., to the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center. The event will be held on Mon., Jan. 19, and begins at 8:30 a.m. with refreshments in the cafeteria, followed by the march at 9 a.m. Attendees will arrive at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center by 11 a.m. for the City of Tacoma's 27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration. More information is available online at bates.ctc.edu. University of Washington Tacoma The University of Washington Tacoma's 9th Annual MLK Unity Breakfast will be held on Mon., Jan. 19, to recognize and celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and his historic civic leadership that inspired a nation to strive for equality. This gathering honors the message of Dr. King and the progress he continues to inspire. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. To recognize this important event in the civil rights movement – the landmark Supreme Court decision that desegregated public education – the organizing committee has invited Fredricka Whitfield to give the keynote address at this year's MLK Unity Breakfast. Whitfield is a national news anchor for CNN and has reported from all over the world including the Persian Gulf region during the wars, Beijing and London for the Olympics. Prior to CNN, she was a correspondent for NBC Nightly News, The Today Show and Dateline NBC, covering stories including the highly contested CONTINUED ON 2000 presidential race. Work finished on $2.5M South Mildred Street Improvement Project Posted online Mon., Jan. 5 Image Courtesy City of Tacoma City of Tacoma officials announced Monday work has been completed on a $2.5 million project to rehabilitate a seven-block stretch of South Mildred Street near Tacoma Community College. The construction took nearly five months to complete, and removed the existing asphalt roadway between South 12th Street and South 19th Street, replacing it with eight-inch thick concrete that provides a longer lasting road surface, according to City officials. Bicycle lanes were added, along with bus pullout curb ramps and driveways to meet ADA requirements. To improve pedestrian crossings along South Mildred Street, crosswalks with flashing beacons and mid-block pedestrian islands were also installed. In addition, the existing storm water drainage system was replaced with a larger pipe to reduce flooding that occurs during high-intensity rainfall. In spring 2013, the Federal Highways Ad-

ministration awarded a grant totaling nearly $945,000 to the City to help pay for the project (see "City Council OKs accepting 16 grants, $31M for 12 Tacoma road projects," Tacoma Daily Index, May 16, 2013; and "16 grants net $31M for Tacoma infrastructure projects," Tacoma Daily Index, April 30, 2013). The City put the project out for bid later that year (see "City of Tacoma REQUEST FOR BIDS Specification No. PW13-0693F Public," Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 19, 2013; and "City of Tacoma REQUEST FOR BIDS Specification No. PW13-0154F Department," Tacoma Daily Index, June 25, 2013). "I'm thrilled that we have finally improved this important corridor," said Tacoma City Councilmember Anders Ibsen. "I've heard a lot of positive feedback from constituents, and they couldn't be happier." More information about the project is available online at cityoftacoma.org.

of the Petitioner, BETHANY CHRISTIAN SERVICES, and serve a copy of your answer upon the undersigned attor- neys for Petitioner, BETHANY CHRIS- TIAN SERVICES, at the office below stated; if you fail to do so, judgment may be rendered against you accord- ing to the request of the petition which has been filed with the Clerk of said Court. YOU ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED that a petition has been filed in this court praying that the parent-child relation- ship between parents of the abovenamed child and the above-named child be terminated. The object of the action is to seek an order relinquishing the child to the Petitioner for adoption and to terminate the parent-child rela- tionship. The child was born in Renton, Wash- ington on February 5, 2010. The child’s birth mother is AMANDA OBRI- EN-MARTINEZ. The court hearing on this matter shall be on the 30th day of January, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in the Pierce County Superior Court; address: Pierce County Superior Court, Remann Hall, 5501 6th Ave., Tacoma, WA 98406. YOUR FAILURE TO APPEAR AT THIS HEARING MAY RESULT IN A DEFAULT ORDER PERMANENTLY TERMINATING ALL OF YOUR RIGHTS TO THE ABOVE-NAMED CHILD. NOTICE: State and federal law pro- vide protections to defendants who are on active duty in the military ser- vice, and to their dependents. Depen- dents of a service member are the s e r - vice member’s spouse, the service member’s minor child, or an individual for whom the service member provid- ed more than one-half of the individu- al’s support for one hundred eighty days immediately preceding an appli- cation for relief. One protection provided is the pro- tection against the entry of a default judgment in certain circumstances. This notice only pertains to a defen- dant who is a dependent of a member of the national guard or a military re- serve component under a call to ac- tive service for a period of more than thirty consecutive days. Other defen- dants in military service also have pro- tections against default judgments not covered by this notice. If you are the dependent of a member of the national guard or a military reserve component under a call to active service for a pe- riod of more than thirty consecutive days, you should notify the plaintiff or the plaintiff’s attorney in writing of your status as such within twenty days of the receipt of this notice. If you fail to do so, then a court or an administra- tive tribunal may presume that you are not a dependent of an active duty member of the national guard or re- serves, and proceed with the entry of an order of default and/or a default judgment without further proof of your status. Your response to the plaintiff or plaintiff’s attorneys about your stat- us does not constitute an appearance for jurisdictional purposes in any pend- ing litigation nor a waiver of your rights. You are further notified that any nonconsenting parent or alleged father has a right to be represented by an at- torney, and an attorney will be ap- pointed for an indigent parent who re- quests an attorney. You are further notified that your fail- ure to file a claim of paternity under Chapter 26.26 RCW within thirty days of the first publication of this notice or to respond to the petition within thirty days of the first publication of this no- tice is grounds to terminate your par- ent-child relationship with respect to the child. You are further notified that your fail- ure to respond to the termination ac- tion within twenty days of service, if served within the state of Washington, or thirty days if served outside of this state, will result in the termination of the parent-child with respect to the child. You are further notified that if you are the alleged father of an Indian child, and you acknowledge paternity of the child, or if your paternity of the child is established prior to the termi- nation of the parent-child relationship, your parental rights may not be termi- nated unless you: (i) give valid consent to termination, or (ii) your parent-child relationship is terminated involuntarily pursuant to 26.33 or 13.34 RCW. One method of filing your response and serving a copy on the Petitioner is to send them your written response by
