WEBPA holiday promotion wrap-up The West End Business and Professional Association wrapped up its holiday promotion on Saturday, Dec. 20. A huge crowd gathered outside the Ace Hardware Entrance (Forks Outfitters), at 1 p.m. and enjoyed fairly pleasant weather for the event.

Santa got things rolling with the $200 Santa Bucks prize which went to Paul Edwards.

Also winning Santa Bucks were Kora Lotspeich and Sue Liedtke.

Ticket sales for the $1,000 Shopping Spree were brisk right up until it came time to change the blue tickets out of the barrel, which was really full this year.

Once the Shopping Spree tickets were in the barrel Santa gave it a few spins and then reached in and selected Scott Seaman’s name. Seaman was not present but a phone call let him know the good news.

Seaman said he purchased about 20 tickets at Forks Outfitters and this is the first time he has won Santa Bucks. When asked if he was excited about winning he said, “Well, heavens yes, I am thankful that I was drawn.”

Dear Editor, My name is Berlinda James and I am an 11-month oral cancer survivor. My cancer appeared in November of last year, as a canker sorelike lesion at the base of my tongue that would not heal.

Dr. Fukano, at Forks Family Dental, had me keep watch on the lesion for two weeks, with strict instruction to come back in if it did not heal.

When it did not, he sent me directly to Dr. Turella (an oral surgeon) in Port Angeles for a biopsy. It was indeed squamous cell carcinoma. I was immediately referred to Swedish Hospital. The 2 cm tumor was removed by Dr. Kim Namou, and my lymph nodes were thankfully free of cancer. At this point I have an 80-90 percent chance of survival at five years.

Thankfully, my oral cancer was caught at a Stage 1. Unfortunately, most oral cancers are not. Stage 1 oral cancer survivors are very rare and most oral cancers are found much later, which is why the mortality rate is extremely high. I would like the Forks Forum to use my story to encourage folks to see their dentist regularly.

They should make sure that their dentist does regular oral cancer screenings. Most im-

The WEBPA sponsors the Turkey and Santa Bucks drawings as a way to thank people for shopping in Forks. Shoppers receive one ticket for every $10 they spend. The $1,000 Shopping Spree, also sponsored by WEBPA, uses extra funds raised to help maintain the downtown Christmas decorations.

Each year bulbs need to be replaced and some of the ornaments really take a beating in the wind and rain. The Seasons Greetings signs at each end of town were totally refurbished three years ago, to purchase new ones each would cost $6,000.

Individual ornaments that appear on the light poles usually go for around $500 each.

Former area mill makes big purchase

Fewer than five months after closing its mills in Beaver and Forks, Interfor Corp. has purchased sawmills in Longview and at the Port of Tacoma.

The Canadian company paid nearly $95 million for Simpson Lumber Co.’s mills in Washington; Meldrim, Ga.; and Georgetown, S.C. A spokesman for Interfor in Vancouver said that the Longview and Tacoma (Commencement Bay) mills have a different timber supply — from the Forks and Beaver operations.

In Port Angeles (where Interfor operates a mill at 243701 West U.S. Highway 101), Interfor produces hemlock and Douglas-fir kilndried studs.

Beaver produced hemlock

and Douglas-fir dimension lumber.

Commencement Bay produces dimension and Longview produces green — not kiln-dried — Douglas-fir studs.

According to the company, closing the Beaver and Forks mills enabled Interfor to consolidate its operations in Port Angeles and increase production and plans are in the works for the Port Angeles mill to further improve efficiency and productivity.

Fifty-two workers at the Beaver sawmill and 35 more at the Forks planer mill were affected by the closures.

About 40 of them have relocated to the Port Angeles mill or to Interfor sites in Oregon and Georgia.

Duc Hatchery raised 600,000 hatchery coho, but with a decline in the funding received, that number has dropped to 250,000. Since 2009 the Quileute Tribe has provided extra funding to raise an additional 150,000 coho.

A Look At 2015

By Christy Rasmussen-Ford It’s officially time to release my extremely famous yearly predictions. By extremely famous, I mean that none of you even remember that I did them last year, do you? Regardless, after concentrating long and hard on my powerful Magic 8 ball, I can tell you with a solid 3-percent certainty that the following things may or may not happen in 2015; Sometime very early in the year, it will be revealed that Mick Dodge is Edward Cullen in hiding. Mick (Edward) just wanted to be alone to do some soul searching after discovering that he was NOT the father of Bella’s baby.

Jeff Burnside from KOMO News will break the story and it will be titled “Sanctuary of Sorrows on the Hoh.” No facts will be used, but dramatic music will be abundant.

In February, the radio station will move its headquarters to Neah Bay. The sports broadcasting schedule will not be affected by this move at all.

In April, after much political success in Forks, Bryon Monohon will announce his intentions to run for president. Sadly, his hopes will be dashed when a rumor surfaces that he IS the father of Bella’s baby. Monohon’s good name eventually will be cleared on “The Maury Show.” Unfortunately for him, it will be too little, too late. Kim Kardashian will win the election by a backside, I mean by a landslide.

Around June or so, Ron’s Shell Station temporarily will run out of mini-tacos. This will result in the entire community rioting and protesting all over town. OK, I will probably be the only one making a scene.

Late in summer, the city council will vote on an official Forks theme. This way, future buildings can be designed without anyone saying, “That building doesn’t fit our theme!” Weirdly enough, the council will choose Disney’s movie, “Frozen” as the theme.

Everyone (other than 6 year old girls) will hate this idea, but the council will remain steadfast in its decision. Let it go …

The kids will return to school in September to learn that there is a pre-elementary school, a mid-elementary school, an almostmiddle school, a middle-middle school, a right-before-seniorhigh school and a senior high school. The good news is that the drop-off lines will be much shorter at each school. The bad news is that a lot of parents will still use these drop-off lines incorrectly.

In the last few weeks of 2015, after realizing that only 3.5 people in the whole area support the idea, the Navy will publicly declare that they are going to cancel their electronic warfare plans. In a statement (posted only at the post office), the Navy will proclaim that they are going with the will of the people that live here. Ha ha, just kidding about that one.

All in all, it will be a very good year for all of us. Happy New Year!

The richest man in Clallam County?

With the recent exciting discovery of the Quileute petroglyph several news reports have made reference to the Quileute village fire that took place in 1889 and the fact that most relics the tribe possessed at that time were lost in that blaze.

Here is what led up to the fire …

By the 1870s, Dan Pullen, born in Maine in 1842, was said to be the richest man in Clallam County.

He claimed to hold the title to over 1,500 acres. It was questionable whether Pullen actually held the deed on all the property he claimed to own. Another problem was a large part of Pullen’s “property” also was claimed by the Quileute.

It was about this time A.J. “Salvation” Smith and family arrived at La Push. The Smith family had spent some time at Neah Bay. There they had endured a bout of typhoid and lost a child to the disease. Now at La Push, Pullen helped them get settled. Alanson Smith was Salvation’s oldest son, a serious young man who got along well with people.

The younger Smith soon got a job as teacher at the Indian School. Since the nearest agent was at Neah Bay he also acted as doctor, dentist and settled disputes between the Quileute and white settlers.

While Smith was of a mildmannered nature, his younger sister Harriet, who was 18, had a fiery temper and Pullen liked what he saw, and soon the 18-year-old married Pullen who was almost twice her age.

At this time Pullen also was fighting with the Washington Fur Company; they pulled out of La Push and left Pullen to carry on under his own name and filed suit against him.

Smith soon found himself in the middle of a mess between the Quileutes and his brother-in-law.

For years Pullen had kept the Indians subdued with violence or threats of violence and the Quileutes had taken just about

In the summer of 1882, Obi, an Indian doctor and man of influence, went to Pullen’s house to complain that Pullen’s pigs had eaten his potatoes. When Pullen went to inspect the damage, Obi and his wife got Pullen in their house and worked him over good, but another Quileute, Klakish-ka, rescued Pullen and Obi went to jail.

Finally, on Feb. 18, 1889, President Grover Cleveland signed an executive order that gave the Quileute a square mile at the mouth of the river with authority for the small reservation vested in the Neah Bay agent. Much of Pullen’s property, including his store building and his own rather pretentious two-story house, lay inside this mile.

It was his contention that his homesteader rights precluded this decision. Pullen had few sympathizers, but found an attorney to take his case.

Later that September almost the entire Quileute tribe traveled to Puyallup to pick hops. While they were gone their entire village was burned to the ground, 26 homes in all. Many believed Pullen and two other men deliberately set the fire. Although Pullen denied it, he immediately leveled the area, planted grass and put up barbed wire fence.

Finally in 1891 the courts decided the Quileutes’ claim took precedence over the settlers.

Pullen still launched another suit to challenge the decision, his one-time fortune disappearing in endless court costs and

attorney fees.

Harriet Pullen decided to move on after the decision and headed for Alaska and the gold rush.

Smith went on to raise four children of his own and a foster son. He served as postmaster and Justice of the Peace and died in 1938.

The richest man in Clallam County, Pullen, died around 1910, his fortune gone.

Community News LAKE OZETTE SOCKEYE STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING On Thursday, Jan. 15, from 10:15 a.m.-3:15 p.m. at the Sekiu Community Center, 42 Rice St., Sekiu, community members are invited to attend the Steering Committee’s discussion about Lake Ozette Sockeye Salmon recovery updates and project implementation.

Agenda topics will include updates on activities since the September meeting; reports on existing recovery projects and discussion about potential new projects; invasive plants presentation; Coal Creek culvert-

to-bridge replacement overview; predation workgroup and turbidity study updates; public outreach and education strategies; and future Steering Committee activities.

The committee helped develop the Lake Ozette Sockeye Salmon Recovery Plan and is now providing input for its implementation. The Steering Committee’s open membership includes landowners, interested citizens, timber companies, as well as representatives from local, state, federal and tribal governments.

SCAM OF THE MONTH Yet another scam via the phone has surfaced in Forks recently. In this one the caller tells the victim they have grant money available but the victim has to give some money to get the money. Kathy Clark, of Forks, alerted the Forks Forum to this most recent fraud. Clark said she called the Better Business Bureau and they informed her that one never should give money to get grant money.

They also told Clark to let people know, if they receive this scam phone call, to call the BBB at 703-276-0100 and report the information.

COMMUNITY, from page 5 DIG SOME CLAMS! Clam diggers can ring in the New Year by filling their buckets with razor clams during an eight-day opener beginning Dec. 31.

State shellfish managers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife approved the dig after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat.

“Digging razor clams over the New Year’s holiday is a true Northwest tradition,” said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager.

The best digging typically occurs one to two hours before low tide, said Ayres, noting that digging is not allowed at any beach before noon.

“With afternoon low tides in their favor, diggers can hit the beach in the daylight and still have plenty of time to clean and cook their clams for a New Year’s meal,” he said.

“Of course, weather always plays a factor, but in recent weeks many diggers have harvested their limits and picked up good-sized clams of 4 to 5 inches,” Ayres said.

All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable 20142015 fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach.

Licenses, ranging from a three-day razor clam license to an annual combination fishing license, are available on WDFW’s website at https:// fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov and from license vendors around the state.

No digs are currently scheduled for beaches at Kalaloch.

HISTORY TALES FEATURES SMART Back by popular demand, Jackson Smart will talk about Port Angeles history as viewed through signs and murals at the Clallam County Historical Society’s History Tales lecture series on Sunday, Jan. 4. First Federal donates

First Federal has donated $2,500 to the Salvation Army of Port Angeles, benefitting its new building project. Each year, the Salvation Army serves Port Angeles community members of all ages, providing crucial supplies and services.

Help find Ruger Ruger is a 2-year-old blue heeler. He went missing from the Whitcomb Dimmel Road area on Friday, Dec. 19, during the thunder and lightening storm.

He has a docked tail and is microchipped and was wearing a black collar with tags when he disappeared.

There was a report that he was seen in the Salmon Drive area a few days ago. If seen, call 640-2603 or 640-2602.

Chatting Around the Campfire

Part 2: Forks Spartan Boys Track Record Holders

By Duane Miles Bob Henry’s mile record time of 4:41.5 was bettered twice, first

by Gary Peterson in 1966 with a time of 4:38.9 and then

by Gary’s brother Stan with a time of 4:36.3 in 1968. Because of the statewide conversion to the metric system in 1980, that last mile time by Stan Peterson, along with a host of others—at various other distances — still stand alongside Bob’s 880 mark. Later on, there will be a complete list of every male record holder for these two track measurement eras.

A question which might now be in some minds is whether there is a way to make some kind of comparison between the former yardage era and the current metric distances — such as 880 yards versus 800 meters? The answer is a resounding yes — but under a cloud of variables which makes a clear evaluation much like, shall we say, comparing apples and oranges, as the old cliché goes. Why this is so should be evident shortly.

The following information alongside the names of each running event record holder — in next week’s episode — will include more than the ordinary data such as distance and time. It also will include both average speed and the difference in feet between each corresponding event.

For instance, the difference between 100 meters and 100 yards is 28 feet — the only track event here which has the greater distance on the meter side, by the way.

Take for example the mile run or the 220 yard dash, the former is 32 feet farther than the 1,600 meter run and the

latter is 4 feet farther than the 200 meter dash. (Take note that no field events such as high jump, discus or triple jump will be included in this scrutiny, for the numbers used in these events have not been changed, therefore are still in feet and inches, so there is no danger of those records going by the wayside).

As you examine the following figures, keep in mind — as alluded to earlier — that what you see is not necessarily conclusive as to which runner, in his prime, would defeat the other at either of the comparable distances. For instance, you will soon notice that average speeds almost always drop as the course gets longer — I feel that this should be considered significant.

It being necessary to include a few more words, in this episode, at this favorable breakoff point, now is a good place to explain my decision not to mention girl track stars in this account. The simple reason is that some of the information for the yardage era has been lost! So in fairness to all the girls concerned, nothing should appear in this column until all data is compiled. Is there anyone who can help me locate the missing pieces?

If the City of Forks gets a new tenant at the site of the former Interfor mill in the Industrial Park, it eventually could bring over 100 new jobs to the community.

The company, a high-end brewery and bottling facility, is looking at Forks as a location as well as three other places in the state.

The group included Bill Peach, Clallam County commissionerelect and Forks Chamber of Commerce president.

The group also included Rod Fleck, City of Forks attorney/ planner; Bryon Monohon, Forks mayor; Audrey Grafstrom, Forks clerk-treasurer; Don Grafstrom, real estate

broker and Forks Chamber of Commerce vice president; and Bill Greenwood, county Economic Development Council executive director.

Rau, a water quality specialist, said that as a marketing ploy, the name would link the brand to the rain forest.

There still is a long way to go before anything happens, but it is an encouraging possibility for the community.

Search continues for missing hiker, Jim Griffin, 60 years of age, near Olympic Hot Springs Searchers from Olympic National Park, Olympic Mountain Rescue, and three dog teams from German Shepard’s Search Dogs continue to search the Olympic Hot Springs area for missing Port Angeles resident, Jim Griffin.

Griffin, age 60, went for a day hike on the Olympic Hot Springs Trail on Monday, December 22. On Wednesday around 10:00 p.m. friends reported Griffin overdue when he did not show up for Christmas Eve dinner.

Three NPS searchers began the search that evening and searched

through the night. On Christmas day, two 2-person search teams searched for Griffin.

In the afternoon they found Griffin’s day pack fifty feet off trail, about ½ mile from the trailhead. The hike from the trailhead to Olympic Hot

Springs is 2½ miles. Griffin’s pack did not contain gear for an overnight trip, so he was likely on a day hike. Griffin frequently takes day hikes to the Olympic Hot Springs.

CALL FOR AMENDMENTS The City of Forks is hereby soliciting proposed changes to the Forks Urban Growth Area (FUGA) Comprehensive Plan. The current FUGA Comprehensive Plan was adopted by the City Council in February of 1996, and revised in 2005. In addition, the Forks Municipal Code notes that zoning code amendments that would be inconsistent with the existing Comprehensive Plan can only be considered on an annual basis. The City is also undertaking a review of the Comprehensive Plan as part of a state-mandated review and updating process that will take two-three years.

The Student of the Month project is sponsored by Soroptimist International of the Olympic Rain Forest and Students of the Month are chosen by their peers and teachers.

The Soroptimists “adopted” the Forks Junior High School to help provide positive rewards for students who consistently display respect and responsibility for their behavior and academic achievement and to help with communication between the school and parents via a monthly newsletter published by SIORF and FJHS. • Seth Davis is the son of Russel and Anita Davis and he​​ is in Mrs. Decker’s seventhgrade block​class​. ​Seth was

Bruce Paul, Forks Outfitters, presents Pat Soderlind, Forks Food Bank, with a check for $1,425.66. The money was raised at the local grocery store through donations from customers.

When checking out shoppers had the opportunity to make a donation to the food bank and have it added on to their total that was due.

The amount collected was down by about $200 from last year but the Forks Food Bank is happy to receive it, having given out hundreds of baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas, it is time to start restocking the shelves.
