Building a Honda store The new Wilder Honda building at 133 Jetta Way in Port Angeles opened for business quietly on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, with little fanfare. That doesn’t mean Wilder Auto isn’t excited about it. It is. With the Nissan, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Volkswagon and Honda lines all sharing the same space, the Wilder Auto Center building was bursting at the seams. “I decided that we needed to expand,” said founder and co-owner Dan Wilder Sr. “Then I thought what would be the car line with the most potential and growth. And that was Honda.” Honda, he noted, has the highest repeat customer rate compared to any other make.

Wilder Jr. cites Scott Jensen at Angeles Communications for burning the midnight oil and working with Wave Broadband to ensure the communications system was up and running by Oct. 31 for the soft opening on Nov. 3. Scott’s brother Bob Jensen, who works for Wave Broadband, had set up the communications systems for the other two Wilder stores, so he was also familiar with Wilder operations. Wilder Jr. approached him about getting the fiber optics installed in a timely manner. “It’s one of the great things about a small town,” said Wilder Jr. “Even though you’re working with a big national corporation, the local staff can make things happen.”

Express service and more

Wilder Honda offers express service for routine maintenance, such as oil and filter changes and tire rotation. The turnaround time for express service is generally 30 minutes and includes a complimentary multipoint vehicle inspection. The multipoint inspection, which is performed on all vehicles brought in for any servicing, lets the car owner know the current state of his or her car. The inspection checks on tire, wiper blade and brake pad wear, engine fluids, lights and signals and other often overlooked maintenance issues. The final touch on service at Wilder Honda is the complimentary car wash — an option that is seldom refused. In fact, Wilder washes as many as 80 to 90 cars a day. Wilder Auto takes its car washes seriously — seriously enough to have its own dedicated staff and Wilder family member, employee care manager Tami Rose, assigned to oversee the procedure. The wash starts with a pressure wash to remove road scum and other particulate matter that could scratch the car finish during washing. An automatic car wash facility is in the pipeline at the Honda store, but for

Why Jetta Way? Wilder Auto wanted to keep its old Deer Park Road address, but the Honda store was the third building on the site, so Clallam County regulations required that the small road be named. Why not Civic Lane? Well, the road is not named after a car. Jetta was the Wilder family’s longtime pet, a German shepherd who died last year.

Customer Care The customer care department is an integral component of Wilder Auto’s approach to service. Owner Dan Wilder Sr. believes that employee training is key to a business’ overall success. Nadean Portner “I don’t want to just sell you a car,” he said. “I want to Customer Care Manager be your auto dealer for life.” To ensure that in-shop customers aren’t kept waiting at the counter while the service adviser is on the phone handling a customer who has called in for information or an appointment, Wilder has hired dedicated staff to handle all incoming calls. “Ten years ago, when Dan hired me, it was atypical for a dealership to hire one person just to do customer care,”said Nadean Portner, manager of the Customer Care Department, who had nearly 20 years of customer service experience at Northwest Orient Airlines at the time. There are currently seven operators manning the phones in customer care, working in shifts that keep at least two to three at the phones from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m to 6 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to scheduling service, the customer care staff follows up each service and sale with a call to check on customer satisfaction. “We call them back to make sure they are happy and that they had a good experience,” said Wilder Sr. “If they didn’t have a good experience, I want to know it right away. I want everyone to be totally satisfied.”
