Tacoma Historical Society New exhibit spotlights iconic local souvenirs
Posted online Mon., Dec. 1 Image Courtesy Tacoma Historical Society The Tacoma Historical Society will unveil an exhibit this month featuring souvenirs that highlight local icons and attractions from a century past. "As Tacoma has grown and changed, her souvenir items have promoted the current favorite," said Tacoma Historical Society President Bill Baarsma. "Along with many schools, parks, churches, and hospitals, Tacoma's keepsakes have featured St. Peter's Church and bell tower, City Hall, Stadium Bowl, Union Station, Cheney Stadium, and the Tacoma Dome." The new exhibit, entitled Greetings From Tacoma: Souvenirs and Boosterism, will include Tacoma-related keepsakes such as postcards, as well as salvaged figurine sculptures from the former Never Never Land at Point Defiance Park, and promotional materials created by Tacoma's Booster Club in the early 1900s. Last month, the Tacoma Historical Society issued a call for vintage souvenirs that could be loaned for the exhibit (see "Tacoma Historical Society seeks vintage souvenirs for upcoming exhibit," Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 7, 2014). The Tacoma Historical Society will host an opening reception for Greetings From Tacoma: Souvenirs and Boosterism on Mon., Dec. 8, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., at the Tacoma Historical Society Museum, located at 919 Pacific Ave., in downtown Tacoma. The exhibit runs through March 28, 2015. More information is available online at tacomahistory.org.
