Hospital district turns down bid by Overlake Medical Center to buy unopened facility BY DANIEL NASH ISSAQUAH/SAMMAMISH REPORTER

Overlake Medical Center will not be acquiring Snoqualmie Valley Hospital as discussed earlier this year, according to a joint statement released Nov. 7. Overlake, a private nonprofit hospital system based in Bellevue, began discussions late in 2013 with King County Hospital District No. 4 — communicating under a confidentiality agreement — to acquire the Snoqualmie Valley

Hospital and its clinics as an affiliate. In July, District No. 4’s hospital board authorized formal negotiations, as reported by the Snoqualmie Valley Record. But it would seem those negotiations did not bear fruit, according to last Friday’s joint statement. The statement read that “leaders of both organizations mutually decided to remain independent but closely aligned and to continue collaborative efforts to serve the healthcare needs of the Snoqualmie Valley and surrounding
communities.” Snoqualmie Valley Hospital District CEO Rodger McCollum suggested the organizations could continue discussions on collaborations in the future. The District began work on a new hospital in Sept. 2013. Snoqualmie Valley Hospital, initially scheduled to open this fall, is now expected to open in early 2015. Last month, the Friends were the only group to apply for nonprofit funding not recommended by Mayor Fred Butler to receive money. In further discussion by the council during an Oct. 23 work session, council members elaborated that while the Friends’ mission to support the park was good, the group did not have its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in order. Here’s the thing: According to Friends chair Chris Kovac, they received their approval letter from the Internal Revenue Service the day of that discussion. The Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park were granted 501(c)(3) status retroactive to April 2, 2013, Kovac said. Initially the Issaquah officials planned to move ahead with the mayor’s original recommendation and help the Friends in future grantwriting efforts, city spokesperson Warren Kagarise said. Supporters and members of the group lobbied for the council to change its tune, speaking in public comment at
