A dedicated phone line for Covington residents ONLY is 253-854-0077 ext. 5135, call between 4-6 p.m. and leave a detailed message. Navigating where to find help and who to call can be difficult, especially when one is under stress when facing a shut-off notice. The city’s Human Service Specialist Victoria Throm is here to help with resources and referrals to guide families through the process. She can be reached by calling 253-480-2411 from 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Funding is provided by the Federal Heat and Energy Assistance Program known as LIHEAP or the Puget Sound Energy HELP programs. Other small grants may be issued from emergency assistance programs in several non-profit agencies.

Requests for energy assistance are one of the most requested needs that come to the City of Covington’s Human Services Division. The city does not provide direct financial assistance but works with a variety of non-profit organizations that do provide energy assistance to income qualified residents of Covington. These programs include payment for all kinds of home heating sources (gas, electricity, oil, firewood, etc.). For eligible clients, assistance is available once per year from each funding source. Shutoff notices are not always required. • Maple Valley Food Bank & Emergency Assistance - Administers the Federal LIHEAP & PSE HELP programs. Assists with gas, electric, and other heating cost emergencies. Photo ID and proof of address; disconnect notice, proof of income required. Call 425-432-8139. Evergreen Park 19801 SE 262nd Street A 1.7-acre undeveloped park with a natural surface path connecting 197th and 199th Avenues. Future plans include pre-school age play equipment, natural areas and a walking path.

Covington Community Park 17649 SE 240th Street This recently developed 30-acre community park features a new multi-purpose grass field, portable restrooms, parking, 1.5 miles of paved, gravel and natural surface trails winding through woodlands, wetlands and meadows. Little Soos Creek can be found on the southwestern portion of the park. Jenkins Creek Park 18050 SE 267th Street A wonderful 22-acre community park featuring paved and natural surface walking trails, a boardwalk, wildlife viewing deck, picnic tables, park benches, lawn, woodlands with enormous maple trees, a stream and pond. On-street parking is located at street end on 267th Street.

Crystal View Park 25412 170th Place SE This 2.2 acre developed neighborhood park provides a half-court basketball, playground equipment, picnic tables, park benches, lawn area, woodlands, and a stream. On-street parking is on 170th Place.

Friendship Park 15808 SE 254th Place This small .6-acre developed pocket park has half-court basketball, playground equipment, reservable picnic shelter, picnic tables, park benches, concrete walking path, and lawn area for informal play. For picnic shelter rentals please call 253-480-2400. In addition to public parks, there are 15 privately owned and operated Homeowners Association (HOA) parks ranging in size from .05 acres to 43 acres. These are available for use by HOA residents only. SPECIAL FACILITIES Covington Aquatic Center 18230 SE 240th Street Located next to Tahoma High School, this large, 6-lane, 100-foot length indoor pool has a water slide, diving board, rope swing, water toys, and party room. Jenkins Creek Trail A .6-mile in long paved trail is located within a 4.2 acre natural area along Jenkins Creek. The primary access is from the SE 261st Street cul de sac, west of 184th Avenue SE. Rainier Vista Trail A scenic .6-mile paved trail meandering along wooded stream within the 24-acre Rainier Vista Natural Area. It is located south of SE 240th Street at 185th Avenue SE with multiple access points. Soos Creek Park and Trail (King County) This s a 6-mile paved regional trail running north from Covington towards Renton. A separate soft surface trail for equestrians exist along most portions of the trail as well as numerous benches. Local access trailheads with parking include: 148th Ave. SE at SE 266th Street (restroom); SE 256th Street just east of 148th Ave. SE; and 148th Ave. SE at SE 249th Street (restroom, picnic area). Wingfield Trail This .25-mile trail winds through part of the 7-acre Wingfield Natural Area. Primary access is on SE 261st Street, west of 170th Place SE, in the Coho Creek neighborhood. Cedar Valley Park 26020 186th Place SE A 6.8 acre undeveloped natural area. Covington Legacy A 10.2 acre undeveloped greenspace just west of Red Robin, north of SE 272nd St. Emerald Downs A 4.5 acre undeveloped natural area northeast of Mattson Junior High School near SE 248th Pl and 172nd Ave SE. Foxwood A 3.4 acre undeveloped greenspace.

Cedar Downs Park (King County) /Cedar Creek Park (City of Covington) 1-mile natural surface trail through 78 acres of mature forest including three tributaries of Jenkins Creek. The primary access is from SE 253rd Street at 212th Place SE in the Cedar Downs neighborhood in Maple Valley.

South Jenkins Creek A 10.1 acre undeveloped greenspace.

In addition to the public open space there are 14 privately owned and operated HOA open space parks ranging in size from 0.1 acres to 54 acres.

New Youth Athletics Program Starts off Strong The Covington Parks and Recreation’s Athletics Department has been busy kick-starting a variety of new youth sport leagues. They organized the first seasons of youth soccer and flag football leagues in fall 2014. Almost 400 kids played soccer each Saturday at Covington Community Park and flag football had almost 100 participants. The games were fun, competitive, and had surprisingly gorgeous weather for most of the season. Word is out that Covington’s new athletic programs are going well! The Co-Ed Youth Volleyball League surpassed its registration goal of 80 participants with now over 200 kids! Youth Basketball League starts the first week of January with the following divisions: (by age) 3/4; 5/6; 7/8; 9/10; 11/12 (boys); 13/14 (boys); and 11-14 (girls). In the spring, youth soccer league runs from March to the end of April. Games are held at the new Covington Community Park. After soccer we jump right into youth baseball and softball leagues for ages 11-14 and also coach pitch for ages 7-10 and t-ball for ages 3-6. Sign-ups for spring sports begin on Dec. 1. REGISTER FOR A TEAM! If you would like to sign your child up for youth athletics, (next up in January is basketball), please call the registration desk at 253-480-2480 or visit www.covingtonwa.gov/athletics for more details. BE A COACH! The youth athletics program relies on the community and parents to serve as volunteer coaches. Specifically, more coaches are needed for basketball season. You may think being a coach is a ton of work, but not to worry because you will be provided with equipment, lesson plans, and all the information you need to coach your team effectively. It’s a rewarding experience to coach the players! If you are interested in coaching, or know someone that may be interested, please call Sean at 253-480-2489. SPONSOR A TEAM! We are also looking for more organizations that would like to sponsor a youth basketball, soccer, or baseball/softball team. The fee is $150 per team and you receive your logo on a team’s jerseys. The sponsor fee is only $125 per team if you decide to sponsor more than one team. This is a great way to get your logo out in the community and support local youth. By planning ahead, you can increase the chances of survival for you and your family, not to mention gain peace of mind knowing you are in control. Are you prepared to survive without essential services, such as running water, electricity, or phones for 7 to 10 days? 1. MAKE A PLAN ✔ Make a family emergency communication plan, identify an out-of-state contact ✔ Plan for people, pets and property ✔ Review and practice your emergency plan 2. BUILD A KT ✔ Build a kit for at least 7 to 10 days ✔ Save important documents/records on USB drives, store one at home and one in a safety deposit box ✔ Create customized kits for home, office and vehicle 3. HELP EACH OTHER ✔ Get involved – Create networks of neighbors and co-workers, work together to pool resources ✔ Participate in a training – CPR, first aid, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) ✔ Learn how to reduce hazards (e.g. shutting off gas supply if needed, strap water heater in place, etc.) BUILD A KIT FOR AT LEAST 7 TO 10 DAYS Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited. Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort. Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home.
