Banks see loan-demand rebound

EVERETT — Joe Smeby thought about purchasing a building for his firm Omega Engineering a few years ago.

And then the recession hit.

“Before things turned sour, I definitely wanted to get into my own space,” Smeby said. “At the time, things just didn’t work out — fortunately.”

Fast forward just a few years and things couldn’t be more different. His three-person firm that does site development for builders has been so swamped that he’s turning down clients.

“We’re very busy,” Smeby said. “We’re as busy as we can be right now, we’re saying no to almost as many projects as we’re saying yes to. It’s a good problem to have.”

are feeling comfortable enough post-recession to take out loans to purchase property and invest in equipment. Commercial loan volume is up this year over 2013 with several bankers saying that they’re seeing a double digit increases.

And things look especially rosy in Snohomish County.

“I would say nationally the economy is getting better but locally I think our economy is stronger,” said Mark Duffy, CEO of Mountain Pacific Bank, which worked with Smeby to help him secure a Small Business Administration loan.

His bank has made $28 million in commercial loans so far this year, Duffy

said. That’s up from $24 million the year before or a 16 percent increase year over year.

Coastal Community CEO Eric Sprink said his bank is seeing a 20 percent increase in loan demand year over year. He also believes that the county is in a good position.

“I think we should all be very grateful that we’re part of such a diverse economy that’s really kicking into gear right now,” Sprink said. “We’re in the sweet spot. We have the Navy. We have Boeing.

We have Microsoft and Amazon not too far away.”

bank has more than 70 branches mainly along the I-5 corridor from Bellingham to Portland. He said one of the hottest markets on West Coast is Seattle and that is rippling both to the north and south.

Snohomish County also is especially attractive, because it’s has available real estate with existing infrastructure already in place, Vance said.

Bryan McDonald, chief lending officer for Heritage, said the bank is seeing an increase in the number of commercial loans and an increase in the total amount being borrowed.

And he said that they’ve held discussions with several businesses looking to potentially move to the area.

“It’s not every week, but every other week there’s another company considering Snohomish County and we get to visit with those folks,” McDonald said. “It might be a year or two years off, but just the number of people looking at Snohomish County continues to be strong.”

One of the reasons for confidence in the local economy has to do with what happened a year ago: Members of Boeing’s machinists union voted to accept wage and retirement concessions for a long-term contract that

will guarantee construction of a new long-range wide-body aircraft in Everett.

The outlook for the region totally changed with that vote, Duffy said.

“If that vote went the other way, I would have had discussions with the board to position ourselves to sell in the future,” Duffy said.

Even though Boeing has moved some jobs away from the Puget Sound region, the vote helped tie Boeing to this area for years to come, Duffy said.

“I think they are shifting jobs elsewhere but they’re making a big commitment here and will be here for a long time,” Duffy said.

The agreement provided the type of stability to the region that gives business owners the confidence to invest in their companies, Sprink said.

“That stability and confidence is wonderful,” Sprink said. “If it wasn’t there, people would have waited a while to see how things settle.”

The positive vibe should continue into the future barring any unforeseen global calamity. One known concern on the horizon is the potential for interest rates to rise.

“We’re watching that very closely,” Sprink said. “How is it going to affect the consumer?

How’s it going to affect businesses?”

Even so, it’s something the economy could probably handle, Heritage’s Vance said.

“Interest rates are still at historical lows,” Vance said. “Assuming that interest rates rise, business can deal with that and factor that into their planning.”

And that’s still on the horizon and isn’t affecting business owners like Smeby who are borrowing now.

He was under a tight deadline for the purchase of his building and Mountain Pacific helped him with a bridge loan to close the deal. And then restructured it with a Small Business Administration loan afterward.

“They stepped up and made it really easy to make this deal happen,” Smeby said.

Credit, debit card changes coming

The old swipe-and-sign method of paying with a credit card may soon be a thing of the past.

By fall next year, many credit and debit cards with a magnetic stripe will be replaced by cards embedded with a microchip.

The new cards look and feel like a regular credit card, but are far more difficult for crooks to counterfeit.

Shoppers slide the cards into a slot, and the terminal reads the chip.

A customer signs for the purchase or punches in a personal identification number.

Each time a chip card is used, a onetime code is created that’s needed to approve the transaction, which provides an additional layer of security. This feature is nearly impossible to replicate in

world to make the shift, partly because there hasn’t been an incentive until now.

The cards are more expensive for banks to issue and many merchants don’t want to buy new terminals to read the cards.

Many major retailers are gearing up for the change.

Banks are weighing when to start issuing the cards, including BECU, which serves nearly 900,000 members.

Fraud is a significant issue for banks.

BECU spokesman Todd Pietzsch declined to say how much the credit union loses to fraud each year, but he did say that one similar in size to BECU would lose “easily several million dollars a year.”

The credit union has to weigh the value of issuing chip cards before next fall when most retailers don’t have the terminals to read the cards.

The cards cost two or three times what a regular credit card costs. It might make sense to issue the new cards to customers who plan to travel overseas.

“We want to do what’s in the best interest of our membership,” Pietzsch said.

“We’re evaluating the options.”

While EMV technology does a good job of preventing fraud at what are called “card-present transactions” — the shopping you do with your credit card in hand — it doesn’t make shopping online any more secure, said Bob Watford, a product manager for BECU. Other solutions are being explored to combat fraud online, he said. One idea is tokenization. Instead of submitting a full credit card number, an account is tied to a digital “token,” a cryptogram for that transaction that includes the last four digits of the card but not all the sensitive data.

The future may not involve any card. A system like Apple Pay, a mobile payment service available on some Apple devices including the iPhone, allows customers to use their phone at the checkout. IPhone users authenticate the purchase by holding their fingerprints to a sensor on the phone.

“Maybe there will be more applications like Apple Pay and individuals won’t need a card,” he said.

It’s called EMV technology and it was developed by Europay, MasterCard and Visa.

These companies are driving the change in this country by shifting the liability for counterfeit fraudulent activity to merchants who can’t process EMV chip cards beginning Oct. 1, 2015.

Retailers who don’t upgrade to chip card terminals can still read the new cards, but they become liable if any counterfeit fraud takes place during the transaction.

The technology isn’t new. Chip cards are the standard in Europe. In places in which these smart cards are used frequently, counterfeit fraud is significantly lower.

Credit card fraud has received more attention lately after several massive cyber-attacks of major retailers.

Last year, crooks stole personal or credit card data for millions of people who shopped at Target. Credit card executives told senators at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in February that those kinds of attacks would be harder to pull off once EMV technology is implemented.

The Oso landslide last spring took the life of Julie Kuntz’s aunt as well as the lives of friends and neighbors, and it destroyed her family home.

She faces more than profound grief.

She and other survivors are left with looming financial devastation.

In March, the hillside let loose above a neighborhood of homes off Highway 530, spreading tons of churning earth and debris across a square mile. The landslide killed 43 people and obliterated more than 40 homes.

That left the Kuntz family and other survivors responsible for mortgages on houses that no longer exist.

“Most people don’t have the right insurance for a mudslide,” she said.

“When we realized we didn’t have mudslide coverage, we started to panic.”

Kuntz’s situation spurred her employer, Coastal Community Bank, to offer to help survivors by forgiving any home, business or auto loans.

That amounts to a handful of customers, but the bank’s gesture lead the way for other financial institutions to do the same.

It also started a national conversation about how banks and the government might better handle properties destroyed by a catastrophic event.

“I didn’t mind challenging and talking to some of the other banks in this country about what they were going to do,” said Eric Sprink, Coastal’s president and chief executive.

The United Way of Snohomish County recognized the Everett-based bank with a Community Partner Award

in October, not only for its actions after the landslide, but for a year-round commitment to the community. This is a bank whose employees logged 7,000 volunteer hours in the year before the tragedy even occurred.

Coastal prides itself on being a small town bank, the kind of place you know your banker. Investors formed the bank in 1997 to serve local people and small businesses. Most of them still sit on the bank’s board of directors today.

The bank’s 10 branches serve many smaller communities in the county, including Sultan and Arlington. It is the only bank in Darrington, just down the road from where the landslide occurred.

“Being a locally headquartered bank allows us to listen to the community more aptly,” Sprink said. “We can respond more quickly and with laser-like focus.”

Sprink is quick to acknowledge that the bank is one of many community organizations that helped after the slide. Forgiving loans started out as a behind-thescenes offer.

When Sprink learned Kuntz was

affected, he asked how the bank could help, and Kuntz mentioned the $20,000 home improvement loan she’d taken with the bank.

“There is nothing to collect on,” Sprink said. “We might as well relieve the emotional burden of the people involved.”

Sprink offered to forgive Kuntz’s home improvement loan and started quietly talking to other customers affected. The act became public after someone mentioned it to the media. Then, the head of the bank used the platform to nudge other financial institutions to follow suit.

“We didn’t send out a press release,” Sprink said. “That’s not the intent of what we were doing. The intent was to do the right thing.”

Coastal is working with a handful of customers — Sprink declined to give an exact number — with business, home and other loans ranging from $5,000 to $300,000. Most of these cases are in limbo, waiting to see if the county will buy back property.

The county applied for a federal grant to help pay for the buyout, but it’s still

The Kuntz family left their home with some friends less than an hour before the landslide. They were headed to Tacoma to watch Quinton’s baseball game.

Julie Kuntz received a text in the car from a friend, who told them there had been a slide and their house was gone.

She thought at first it was some mud in the house, and there was nothing they could do, so they continued driving.

As more horrific details poured in, the family realized it was bad.

Their home was the last to be hit by the slide. Her home appeared on the front page of The Herald, an American flag sprouting tall amongst the rubble.

“It was like our house was put through a blender,” she said.

The day after the slide, searchers found

Buddy, the family dog, alive but buried. After 20 minutes of cutting through debris with a chainsaw, a rescuer pulled the dog free.

The moment was captured on video, a small miracle in amidst horror.

In the days after the tragedy, Coastal employees were focused on getting the branch in Darrington up and running.

Darrington was cut off from Highway 530 and Coastal was the only bank in town. The slide cut internet access, something essential for bank functions. Frontier Communications laid a new line on top of the road and the bank was able to open its doors.

Coastal added extra staff to its Darrington branch and offered to serve as a collection point for donations.

The bank accepted funds from all over

the world. It’s a big job because each donation must be processed.

In one instance, KING-TV’s Jesse Jones told viewers on his “Get Jesse” segment that the folks in Oso needed gas cards. In the next few days more than $100,000 worth showed up in the bank’s P.O. box.

“It was a horrible situation, but people reacted beautifully,” Sprink said.

When Julie Kuntz returned to work a few days after the slide, the head of Coastal pulled her into his office. He reminded her she was the CFO of her family, and told her the bank planned to forgive her loan and others.

“It was powerful from a business perspective,” she said. “Everyone did what they could.”

The family is moving forward as best as they can. They live in a small rental.

There are no plans to rebuild or return.

Kuntz said most of her neighbors feel the same.

“They don’t want to live there because of the things they saw,” she said. “It feels like a graveyard.”

up in the air. A buyout might be a better option for property owners, who have to report a forgiven mortgage on their tax returns as “income.”

“That is one of the absurd outcomes, that (loan forgiveness) is seen as a windfall under the IRS code,” said Bryan Adamson, a Seattle University associate professor of law with expertise in consumer protection and mortgage lending.

The federal government could help mitigate situations like the Oso landslide by not taxing debt forgiveness as income, he said.

At the very least, lenders could suspend mortgage payments in a disaster area for at least six months and loosen credit reporting policies for survivors who can’t make payments in the months after a disaster.

Coastal forgave Julie Kuntz’s home improvement loan, but her $200,000 mortgage is through Citigroup. After the tragedy, the family was surprised to learn their home insurance policy wouldn’t cover anything. She’s working with Citigroup now on a solution.

Charities have stepped up to help, including the Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation, which pledged up to $30,000 per family to help survivors find permanent housing. But that doesn’t pay for her mortgage, which she’s still making payments on.

At first she felt uncomfortable even asking questions about her mortgage, when her neighbors had lost loved ones.

She realized her family needed to move on and plan for the future. They needed a permanent home and financial stability.

Kuntz is a local who cares deeply about her community. She went to Darrington High School, and after she married Cory Kuntz, it seemed only natural to return to his family’s land in the Hazel area outside Darrington.

The 8.5 acres used to be part of a dairy farm. They set to work fixing up a 1960s rambler and raising their son, Quinton, now 16.

He’s an outdoorsy kid who enjoyed disappearing into the woods behind their home to hunt grouse with his dog, Buddy, or ride his dirt bike. For the family, it was a sanctuary.

Kuntz, now a marketing coordinator for Coastal, was the branch manager of the Darrington branch of the bank. She was there when it got its start at a card table in the corner of the hardware store.

The young men and the sea Pair of 24-year-olds pool together savings to buy commercial boat

They seem like an unlikely pair to be buying a half-million-dollar boat and heading to Alaska to fish commercially.

For one, they’re both just 24 years old.

But Jeffrey Ludwig and Matt DeWitte already have a combined 15 years of fishing experience, hold well-paying jobs in maritime and already possess an expensive commercial licensing permit.

And Ludwig was born into the industry.

“I grew up with it, I saw my Dad doing it and I always wanted to own my own operation,” Ludwig said. “It’s a business and there’s risk with any business. That being said, it’s really fun and it’s a cool job to do.”

Their story led Mountain Pacific Bank in Everett to back them. From the bank’s perspective, lending money to the pair isn’t a risk, because they’ve already demonstrated an ability to make a commitment and follow through on it, said Aaron Overland, the Mountain Pacific lending officer.

“If you have confidence in the borrowers and their expertise in the industry and you have confidence in the (boat builder) and their expertise in the industry then it’s just a make-sense proposition,” Overland said.

If all goes well, the pair will take possession in April of a 32-foot sternpicker being built by Mavrik Marine in La Conner, transport it to Bristol Bay in Alaska and start fishing by next summer.

Jeffrey Ludwig, who is from Arlington, is following in the footsteps of his dad, Joel Ludwig, who fishes for sockeye salmon with his boat, the Match Point.

In 2002, Joel Ludwig took his sons, Jeffrey, then 12, and Peter, then 10, out for the summer to fish commercially, giving them work and a share of the profits. Jeffrey could have taken cash or put his money toward one of his dad’s commercial fishing permits. He chose the latter.

“It’s just as well. I would have probably just blown it as a young kid,” Jeffrey Ludwig said.

Every summer, Jeffrey Ludwig went with his father to fish in June and July, not only learning the business, but also earning money for that permit. His father was selling it to him for the $60,000 that he bought it for.

In the summer of 2006, Matt DeWitte, who went to Arlington High School with Jeffrey Ludwig, joined the crew. Jeffrey Ludwig recalls skiing with his dad and family on Mount Baker when they saw DeWitte.

“My dad conducted a five or 10 minute interview up there and he said, ‘You’re hired,’ ”Jeffrey Ludwig said.

DeWitte only vaguely remembers the conversation. But he found a calling with that summer job and job shadow on a boat the year before. After high school, Ludwig headed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, New York, and DeWitte went to the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, Calif.

After graduating,they both got jobs in 2013 working on an oil rig for United Kingdom-based ENSCO in the Gulf of Mexico.

They serve as third-mates on a floating oil rig drilling in water 6,230 feet deep.

They work onboard the rig for three weeks and then fly back to the Northwest for three weeks off.

This summer, DeWitte worked a couple of weeks on a fishing boat in Alaska for the first time in a couple of years. He realized how much he missed fishing.

“After the season, it really hit me that I wanted to buy into the fishery,” said DeWitte in an email. “Jeff and I had discussed the possibility of buying a boat together a few years prior. For me, this was kind of a last chance opportunity to buy a boat.”

DeWitte had been about to buy a house on Lake Goodwin. Instead, he and Ludwig pooled their savings together to make the down payment on a boat. They created their business plan on a flight to their work.

They set up a business named DeWitte & Ludwig Fisheries. Their accountant suggested that they approach Mountain Pacific. DeWitte and Ludwig felt they could make a compelling case for a loan, despite their age.

“We both make north of a 100k a year in the oil field and we come from a successful fishing group,” Jeffrey Ludwig said. “My Dad and his 10 other guys in his fishing group are consistently among the top producers in Bristol Bay.” Loaning to the fishing industry has been an area of emphasis for Mountain Pacific since 2010, said Mountain Pacific CEO Mark Duffy. The bank has even opened a loan office in Ballard to be closer to potential clients.

Duffy said they felt comfortable with Ludwig and DeWitte from the beginning.

“We were impressed with their story and they had a good plan,” Duffy said.

Ludwig and DeWitte considered their options for a boat before deciding to get one built by Mavrik Marine.

BECU grows out of grocery stores

BECU opened the Bothell Neighborhood Financial Center in October, replacing its last credit union in Snohomish County that had been in a grocery store.

BECU has gotten out of the grocery store business in Snohomish County.

Or at least out of the stores physically.

The state’s largest credit union decided six years ago to move its 42 neighborhood financial centers from grocery stores to

stand-alone storefronts.

BECU found that it just needed more space and making the move means these centers are increasing from 400to 500-squarefeet to 2,000-squarefeet or larger, said Todd Pietzsch, the credit union’s spokesman.

“It’s a much more pleasant experience, there’s much more pri-

vacy,” Pietzsch said. “It’s a much better member experience.”

While there’s been a cost to the change — including higher leases — they’ve found that more people are joining the credit union, he said.

In October, BECU moved its last branch located in a grocery store in the county — a QFC in Canyon Park in Both-

“Our first day open, we served 150 members and it went so great we had to double check that number because our QFC branch on a busy day would serve around 75,” said Brian Mills, manager at the new Bothell BECU. BECU started as a credit union serving Boeing employees nearly 80 years ago.

Until 1990, the credit union only had one location at Boeing Field south of Seattle. BECU then moved to a six-story headquarters in Tukwila.

In 1995, BECU added its Everett Financial Center at 11127 Evergreen Way in south Everett.

In 2002, the state loosened the rules on who could be a member of a credit union. So BECU started enrolling the general public. About the same time, Safeway got out of the banking business, but had space available in 28 stores in the Puget Sound area. The grocery store leased the spaces to BECU. “It certainly made sense for us to grow and expand into those stores,” Pietzsch said.

The drawback was that the credit union found that these locations were small and some customers didn’t have enough privacy dealing with financial matters.

When moving from a grocery location to standalone storefront, BECU has attempted to place its in branches in the most convenient area for both those existing customers and new members as well, Pietszch said.

BECU has also been working to add cash-only ATMs in stores.

“We partnered with Rite-Aid to have surcharge free, cash-only ATMs in all Washington state Rite-Aid stores. Which is about 134 stores,” Pietzsch said.

“They are also part of the co-op network now as well which means if you are part of a credit union you will be able to use those ATMs for free as well.”

Banks shy away from pot businesses

LAKE STEVENS — Reed Evans called several banks looking to open an account for Cannablyss, his family’s recreational marijuana business and the only pot retail store in Lake Stevens.

He had no luck. He got his name on a waiting list at a credit union in Seattle, but most financial institutions are shying away from doing business with the stillyoung industry.

“We pay most bills in cash, we literally drive to the PUD and give them a couple of hundred dollars and we drive to our landlord to pay the rent,” Evans said.

His family makes sure to drop money into a safe so they don’t have a large amount of cash on hand. And they’ve installed an ATM machine for their customers at the store at 2705 Hartford Ave. It’s inconvenient and inefficient. But that’s the situation with marijuana is legal in the state, but illegal federally.

The Justice Department has made clear it won’t interfere with businesses in states where marijuana’s sale has been made legal so long as everyone adheres to state law and the industry is taxed and regulated. And the Treasury and Justice departments earlier this year announced formal guidance for banks.

There’s enough uncertainty, though, that most bankers are unwilling to expose themselves and their shareholders to the risk if anything goes wrong.

Federal lawmakers or regulators need to create language, without equivocation, that banks can do business with the industry, said Mark MacDonald, president and CEO of Community Bankers of Washington, a group that represents independent community banks in the state.

Otherwise, his members would worry about a rogue regulator coming after them for failing to abide by the letter of the law.

“I’ve been told by some of the regulators that they would never do that,” MacDonald said. “Well I say put it in writing, give my guys and gals something to put their hat on.”

Still, some banks and credit unions are working with marijuana business owners — usually charging a premium to open and keep open an account.

“I’ve got seven banks that are banking the marijuana industry but they don’t want me to go out and publicize their names,” MacDonald said.

He said all of the banks that he knows are doing business with growers and processors.

He said that he knows of no banks that are acknowledging doing business with retailers.

Bankers are required to know their customers and, in some cases, know their customer’s customers.

Some bankers feel they can trust a grower or a processor, because they can do due diligence on the business and the retail shops they’re working with.

They can’t do due diligence on every person who walks through the door of a shop.

That’s a concern for Mark Duffy, president and CEO of Mountain Pacific Bank in Everett.

“When it comes to the retailer, we don’t know who their customer is necessarily nor do we want to take the risk,” Duffy said.

He said his bank has been turning away everyone in the industry who have wanted to work with them. He’s even been approached by people he knows in the community.

“We’re very small and we’re taking a wait-and-see attitude,” Duffy said. “We don’t want to be a first one.”

Heritage Bank, which merged with Whidbey Island Bank, also has turned away business from the marijuana

industry.

Heritage CEO Brian Vance said he understands the quandry these business owners face.

“We’re not saying we’re for or against the marijuana industry,” he said.

But he said there’s just too much confusion about the potential consequences for banking with the industry. He thinks the situation will likely come to a head in the near future.

“When I say it will sort itself out, I think the possibility is that more states will pass marijuana laws so the federal government will have to deal with this more specifically,” Some of the pot businesses may already be using banks or credit unions without

the financial institutions fully understanding what’s going on.

That’s the understanding of Evans, whose family owns Cannablyss. While some pot retailers are taking debit cards, Evans said he’s heard that they’re using cashless ATMs and depositing money into their personal accounts without telling the banks.

“I’ve heard of people just using personal bank accounts and hoping they don’t get flagged just so they have some place to put their money,” he said.

His family has attempted to be on the up-and-up with their business. Whenever he approached banks, he was always told them that they were opening a retail marijuana shop.

His parents, Bob and Denise Evans, were the ones to get the license. Reed Evans and his wife, Karn, work at the store along with his sister, Jaeda Evans.

His parents were against marijuana use until Bob Evans suffered from cancer.

Denise Evans went out to get medicinal marijuana for her husband.

“When she saw that people can use it medically she got excited about it,” Reed Evans said.

When voters made recreational marijuana legal with Initiative 502, his mom suggested that the family apply for one of the retail businesses.

The family who all live near each other in Lake Stevens did the research and applied on the last day possible to get a license. They understood that the industry would evolve.

“We pretty much assumed it would be a cash business in the beginning,” Evans said. “We’re OK with that. We’re going to plug away until the rules change.”

More businesses paying bills online

More and more businesses have switched from paper checks to doing payroll and paying vendors electronically.

Still a good number of businesses continue to use paper and ink.

“Writing checks is just one of the most inefficient ways of doing business,” said Sean Devine, a KeyBank senior vice president. “In many cases, it’s a format that’s quickly becoming obsolete.”

The number of companies in Snohomish County that have switched to e-payments have jumped in just the past few years, said Devine, who works in Seattle, but lives in Lake Stevens.

Three years ago, only 40 percent of KeyBank customers in the county that do between $2 million to $20 million worth of business did their banking electronically.

That jumped up to 68.5 percent this year, Devine said.

It still means that more than 31 percent of businesses who use KeyBank still write checks.

Devine is part of a team with KeyBank charged with helping businesses move from paper checks to doing business electronically.

He said that his bank will work in any format that the customers wants. And he’s seen businesses that necessarily do

business with paper checks. One is a recycling center that writes checks when people walk through the door and deliver recyclables.

Some business owners are just hesitant to adapt to the changing financial environment.

The benefit of changing is that paper checks can take a lot of staff time. With-

out that task, those employees can do other jobs for their company.

“It can effectively cut the staff hours down to reallocate the company’s focus to the sales force or to do different jobs or to eliminate the need to hire additional staff,” Devine said.

Part of it is the initial infrastructure that needs to be put in place to make it

happen. Businesses need to reach out to vendors and employees and gather account numbers. Depending on the size and complexity of the company, this be can be a daunting task, Devine said.

“It has a tendency of becoming a back burner idea, something that’s nice to do someday,” Devine said.

Most banks can help businesses navigate the process.

Some business owners don’t trust moving money around electronically.

Online fraud can also be a concern. But Devine said that people can commit fraud as easily if not more so with paper checks.

“Routing number, account name, company name and address that’s all a fraudster needs to go out and print fake checks in your company’s name,” he said.

A new service that KeyBank started offering this year — and other banks offer as well — is payment cards or what’s called p-cards.

The cards can pay for services or goods with money coming directly from a business bank account. So a card could be used to pay for gas at the pump, office supplies or any other need.

Devine said that many businesses have embraced this new service.

So far, 12 percent of the businesses in the $2 million to $20 million range have signed up.

“We’re seeing it well beyond just travel and entertainment,” Devine said.

Edmonds firm talks growing wealth

EDMONDS — Most financial advisers work for large firms, the Charles Schwabs and the Prudentials of the world.

About 20 percent work in smaller independent firms, according to the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors.

One of those firms is Koenig Financial Group in Edmonds, a three-person team that strives to help clients understand their financial goals and strategize a road map of how to achieve them.

“Sometimes it is just as simple as starting the conversation about people’s finances,” said Mike Koenig, who heads up the firm. “People are not in the habit of talking about gaining and managing wealth, funding their kid’s education and what they want their retirement to look like.”

Financial planning is considered to be one of the fastest-growing occupations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, with a projected growth rate of 27 percent between 2012 and 2022.

That’s an additional 60,300 positions added to the existing 175,470 jobs nationwide, with a median salary of $67,520.

Industry experts pin this growth on Baby Boomers as they march toward retirement with the oldest of the boomers reaching 65 in 2011.

Clothing maker dreams big and tall

SNOHOMISH — When Mark Brandsma wanted to start a small business, he thought big.

His Six-8 Clothing Company specializes in casual clothing for men in the 6-foot to 7-foot range.

Brandsma’s company, dubbed for his own height, offers 189 individual styles and colors of shirts and jeans.

From polo shirts and T-shirts to three styles of jeans, the line continues to grow.

A collection of flannel shirts were introduced in October. Casual slacks are now in the design phase.

While specializing in niche markets have been a marketing dream for many small businesses, success stems from a firm foundation of expertise, passion and flawless execution, according to Brandsma.

The 54-year-old’s passion for fashion was sparked as he grew up in his native Netherlands.

His father worked for C&A, an international Dutch chain of fashion retail clothing stores, in the men’s department for 37 years. When Brandsma was old enough, he joined the company working the floor at his father’s side. As he grew, he was frustrated to see all the fashion options offered at retail that he couldn’t fit into.

As he continued to grow, Brandsma decided to move to the United States.

“I was a basketball player born in a soccer country,” he said. “I kept looking for avenues that would take me to the United States to play.”

That opportunity came to Bandsma in his early 20s. But it came in the form of cute American girl visiting her mother’s family in the Netherlands. Now married 33 years, the couple met while out on the town with friends.

Brandsma moved to Texas with her and was a walk on to a Division 1 team, the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg near the Texas-Mexico border.

When it became clear he was not professional basketball material, his summer job at the fast food chain Whataburger became a 10-year stint with the company.

Over that time he moved up the ranks into regional management.

“The restaurant business is hard work, long hours and I was gone from home a lot,” said Brandsma.

He reached out to his father for connections that would lead him back into the fashion business. His C&A past put him in a prime position to join their Miller’s Outpost clothing store group.

Following years in the Southern California market, he was moved to the Northwest in late 1997 to open 20 stores in 24 months. He settled his family in Snohomish because of the country lifestyle.

When C&A sold the chain to a venture capital firm, Brandsma was a casualty of corporate restructuring. He found another position with Family Christian Stores as the Northwest district manager, opening new stores in the same shopping centers as he had with Miller’s Outpost.

After eight years, another corporate repositioning put Brandsma’s name on the layoff list. He then set out on his own.

“I had some savings and funds from severance packages,” he said. “When I explored various areas I took stock in what I know and where my passion was. I do love clothing and I do know tall.”

Being in the height range of his customers, Brandsma is well poised to be the line’s lead designer.

“You cannot simply add length and call it ‘tall’,” he said. “We have bigger hands which means shirt buttons and zipper pulls have to be bigger, front pants pockets need to be 11-inches deep and there needs to be 6 3/4-inch back pocket openings. Little things mean a lot to big guys.”

Those designs are turned over to a local pattern maker who supplies the patterns for production at a Tukwila-based manufacturer. Brandsma likes having a factory so close to home to reduce shipping costs. Plus it makes checking on the garment quality easy.

The business lessons Brandsma has learned are too numerous to count, he said.

“In hindsight I should have started with a women’s line. I would have been further along,” he said. “Women shop better and more frequently for clothes than men.

Now seven out of 10 of Six-8’s shoppers are women who experience the fit frustration of their sons and husbands.”

Making the decision to use online mar-

keting was not that difficult. Brandsma believes that tall customers, who cannot find their size in stores, are already online seeking for clothing solutions.

His notion about online is underscored by a National Retail Federation overview pegging a full 50 percent more tall men buying clothing online than their regular-size counterparts.

Brandsma also has taken his line to customers at fairs, gift shows and basketball and volleyball tournaments this past year for the first time.

“The main reason to have face-to-face time with customers is to give them an opportunity to try on the clothing and touch the fabrics,” Brandsma said. “I also learn from listening to people. You cannot get that experience with online sales only.”

Online sales account for 65 percent of Six-8’s sales, with special showings resting at 35 percent, according to Brandsma.

As the company marks its first year of operations, Brandsma reports there are still challenges that can only be met with determination.

“It has been a huge risk,” he said. “It takes total family support.”

Brandsma’s daughter, Rachel Oxnevad, 29, fills orders and helps with sales. His son, Nick, 27, sets up the “store” at the fairs, exhibitions and sporting events.

“You have to dream big and live a day at a time,” said Brandsma.

“My engineering degree allows me the option of seeking a position in one of the many local aerospace companies,” says Jennifer. “I am able to finish my degree and have lots of job opportunities here in the area.”

Sound & Sea lands big Navy contract

“We specialize in the odd stuff,” said Dallas Meggitt, technical director at Sound & Sea Technology, a small engineering services firm located in Lynnwood.

By odd, he meant drilling horizontally through rocks 600 feet under the sea to protect a telephone cable running from Greenland to England, or using technology developed for arctic petroleum environments to help install wind turbines on Lake Erie.

Meggitt’s wife, Judith, is president of the company they founded together in 1999. They started with no employees and wrote their first proposal on their kitchen table, but have since employed up to 50 people in both Washington and California.

In September, the U.S. Navy awarded them an indefinite order contract with the potential for up to $99 million over 3 1/2 years. The contract is on an as-needed basis for design, installation and repair of underwater equipment, port security and ocean energy systems.

This is their third large Navy contract; the first was for $13.5 million in 2002 and the second for $45 million in 2005.

They believe they give customers the best service possible by marrying disciplined processes like those found in large engineering companies with the speed

and flexibility of a small company.

Since the beginning, the Meggitts have maintained close ties with the Washington State Procurement Technical Assistance Center, which aided them in winning their first contract.

The center’s goal is to help companies to obtain contracts with local, state and federal governments and they have provided invaluable assistance to Sound & Sea in preparing proposals, interpreting contracting procedures and even giving advice on how to handle expenses such as the company car.

Neither of the Meggitts initially planned to own a business.

Judith, originally from Topeka, Kansas, started out working administrative jobs defense contractors as she followed her first husband, an officer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to postings throughout the U.S. She eventually landed at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., while working for a Navy contractor.

Dallas, born in New York, has a degree in aeronautical engineering from California Polytechnic State University, but has never had an aeronautical engineering job.

During and right after college, he worked in the aerospace industry on non-airplane projects such as a submersible work boat. The Navy liked his work and recruited him for a civil service position at Port Hueneme, California. He

then moved to the Navy Yard, where he met the newly single Judith; they married in 1976 and moved to Camarillo, California.

In California, Judith worked for more defense contractors, and Dallas became known as an undersea surveillance expert.

He loved telling people at parties, “I hunt Russian submarines.”

In 1992, at the end of the Cold War, the Navy offered early retirements, and Dallas jumped at the opportunity.

He and Judith moved to the Seattle area and Dallas worked on an undersea surveillance program at Raytheon while Judith took on temp work and cared for an aging family member.

In 1999, Raytheon moved the surveillance work to Rhode Island, but by then Dallas and Judith were self-described “West Coast people,” so they decided to try opening their own business.

With their extensive contacts in the niche business of ocean engineering and experience with government contracting, they thought they could provide a valuable service to both commercial and government customers.

One of their first contracts was a cable installation at Ascension Island in the Pacific Ocean, which was part of a hydrophone system used for monitoring nuclear detonations.

As with all of Sound & Sea’s work, the Meggitts ran the program from beginning to end, providing the full spectrum

of systems engineering services — design, program management, site coordination and hands-on installation.

To stay lean, Sound & Sea owns no capital equipment such as cable-laying vessels; instead, they hire such equipment and contract with local labor to carry out much of the site preparation and installation tasks.

Many of Sound & Sea’s contracts require overseas work, even when dealing with a U.S. customer. Although only about 10 percent of their contracts are with international customers, about half of Sound & Sea’s actual work takes place overseas.

The company maintains offices in both Lynnwood and Ventura, California, but most of their 42 employees work from home.

Sound & Sea is well known in the ocean engineering business, so the Meggitts don’t need to advertise for new business, but they and their employees attend conferences throughout the world to network and maintain currency on new technology.

Although 2013 was a difficult year due to government budget cuts, the company rebounded in 2014 and they anticipate additional growth, especially in cable-related work.

If a project has anything to do with infrastructure in or near the ocean, there’s a good chance that Sound & Sea will be there to help.

Port of Everett Seaport Adds Lift Capacity Purchased a 150-ton mobile harbor crane and three reachstackers The Port of Everett Seaport is adding additional lift capacity to its operations in March 2015, with the purchase of a new, 150-ton GHMK 7608 mobile harbor crane.

The nearly $5.1 million investment, which was authorized by the Port Commission in July, will allow the Port of Everett to better accommodate its niche market of overdimensional cargoes, and provide opportunity to compete for new heavylift business.

“We are investing in our infrastructure and cargo handling equipment to continue with our reputation of safe and excellent service, quick and efficient turnaround times and huge lift capacity,” said Carl Wollebek, the Port of Everett’s Chief Operating Officer. “With the addition of the GHMK 7608 and the authorized investments to upgrade our current mobile harbor crane, we will continue to be the preferred port of call for the construction and energy industries.” ”Working in tandem, the Port’s two mobile harbor cranes will have a 250 metric tons capacity, making the Port of Everett the best choice for large cargo shipments on the Pacific West Coast. The Port Commission also authorized

the purchase of three new, 45-ton Hyster reachstackers.

“Terex Port Solutions is very pleased to continue our partnership with the Port of Everett evidenced by this most recent purchase of the Terex Gottwald GHMK 7608 mobile harbor crane,” said Alan C. Garcia, Terex Regional Sales Manager, Southeast United States/Caribbean.

“This will most certainly complement their current Terex Gottwald HMK 280 and will give them the capability of providing tandem heavy lift services to their customers and help secure the Port of Everett’s position as the premier breakbulk handling facility in the Pacific Northwest.”

It’s Budget Time: 2015 Budget Built for Growth

The Port of Everett Commission is expected to take action on the 2015 Budget at its Nov. 4 Port Commission Meeting.

The 2015 budget is built on a platform to set the stage for long-term growth. The budget assumes strong growth in seaport activities and modest growth in the marina and real estate divisions. The budget is based off $34 million in operating revenues, $5.66 million in nonoperating revenue (includes a 1% growth in property Commissioners Troy McClelland/District 1 Tom Stiger/District 2 Glen Bachman/District 3

taxes), $26 million in operating costs and a healthy $44.4 million in environmental cleanups and capital investments.

Before you misspeak, read this column N ot too many computer experts have a U.S. Navy destroyer named after them. Grace Hopper is the lone example, just as singular and exceptional as she was throughout her life.

Hopper’s achievements are legendary and her 43-year Navy career was filled with awards and promotions — all the more remarkable for a woman in a technical area within a military service that got a late start in recognizing women’s potential.

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing commemorates her achievements in a field still dominated by men. It was at their most recent conference in Phoenix when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella answered a question and set off a stink bomb.

He was being interviewed by Maria Klawe, who is the president of Harvey Mudd College and a Microsoft board member. She asked him what advice he would give to women when asking for a raise.

As he explained in an email to all Microsoft employees, “I answered that question completely wrong.” His assessment was absolutely correct.

Without going into the details of the transcript, what he said, in part, was that there was good karma in not asking for

a raise and being a person whose value would be eventually recognized. It was not the right thing to say to an audience of women, or a world, who believe that their contribuJames tions are systematMcCusker ically undervalued, sometimes even in the best companies.

Business Shortly after the 101 conference, Nadella attempted to clarify what he meant to say but like all corrections of this type it could not undo the damage. Backtracking statements of any kind do not always make things worse, but rarely improve the situation. The best they can do is to make the mistake easier to forget.

Is there a way to eliminate this kind of gaffe and “oops” words that come out of our mouths? Not entirely, but there are ways to make them less likely to occur.

The first thing you can do is to start using your memory in a stronger, more helpful way. Whether you are dealing with an audience of millions or a single listener like your boss or a colleague, be ready from the start.

If it is a prepared speech, commit your opening line to memory, then say it out loud, as many times as it takes so that you never get it wrong. You might also practice saying it out loud when there are distractions like turning on the TV. Nailing down that opening line is important because two things happen at that point: you make your first impression; and it is the most likely time for nerves or stage fright to affect you. Once you get rolling, the odds of getting stage fright almost disappear.

You can improve as a speaker, too, if you take that opening line habit and extend it to the bullet points of your speech. Say them out loud so that you not only remember them but also are comfortable with the word sequence.

It is embarrassing to find yourself stumbling over your own speech — which looked good in print but clumsy when you try to say it. Make sure that you haven’t included any words in your speech that you can’t pronounce. That sounds silly, but it happens.

The next most important thing you can do to keep your foot out of your mouth is to know your audience.

Great speakers as far back as Socrates recognized the importance of knowing the interests of your audience and shaping your speech to incorporate them.

Knowing as much as you can about your audience helps you with the last important part of preparation: anticipating the questions. Most presentations, talks and speeches these days have a question-and-answer session afterward and these can be fun…or they can be never-again dreadful.

Anticipating the questions and being prepared to answer them make it a lot more fun.

Start by writing down the questions that seem likely. Draft your answers to them and treat them the same way as your opening line and bullet points: memorize them until you never get them wrong.

Don’t limit your practice to softball questions. Eventually your ability to anticipate the questions will improve and you will become more comfortable with the process.

Being thoroughly prepared and practiced will reduce the chances of brainfreeze and the panic that comes with it. This will mean that you won’t stop thinking during your speech and while answering questions.

And, make no mistake, that is the key to being a good speaker.

How a night owl can fly with early birds B eep, beep, beep, time to get up.

The alarm clock going off is possibly the worst sound ever.

OK, there are worse sounds, but alarm clocks are right up there at the top of my list.

Are you a morning person, bouncing right out of bed to take on the day? Or, are you like me, with three alarms on my phone set to go off every 15 minutes?

I would love to be a morning person and embrace the start of the day with anticipation and enthusiasm.

I think it’s an awesome feeling when I am out and about early, knocking out a bunch of tasks in the morning. The reality is, most mornings my eyes may be open, but I won’t come alive until about 10 a.m.

We all have our own rhythms and may find our energy levels are highest in the morning, middle of the day or the evening.

I believe most people tend to be either early birds or night owls. What’s a night owl to do?

You may not be able to control when you feel the most alert, but you can control your environment to help you perk

up and get out the door on time.

Don’t sacrifice sleep

How do you feel the next day after only five hours of Monika sleep? Probably Kristofferson not bright eyed or bushy tailed.

Sleep is vital to our office health and energy efficiency levels, yet it’s often exactly what we sacrifice in order to get everything done in a day.

Don’t skip sleep to create more time.

Instead, get the proper amount of sleep so you will have more energy the next day to get everything done.

Be sure to create an electronics blackout every evening by turning off all stimulating screens before bed. Off with the TV, computer, laptop and the phone at least 30 minutes before bed. Instead, read a good old fashioned book that you hold in your hand, drink a cup of herbal

tea or take a warm bath.

Stop drinking caffeinated beverages late in the day. Caffeine is a stimulant and that’s why you started your day with it, right?

Dress the night before We’ve all heard the tip before, choose your outfit the night before for the next day. This is now the single biggest efficiency tool I use to help me get out of the house on time. Lay out your clothing, jewelry and shoes and it will simplify your morning tremendously. If you’re not sure what you want to wear, put together two or three outfits that are ready to go at any time.

Don’t forget to place anything else that you need to take with you in the morning by the door.

Create a coffee station You don’t want to get hopped up on caffeine late in the day, but chances are good that you do want to kick start your day with it.

Create an organized coffee and tea

station with the supplies you need at your fingertips: coffee mugs, tea, sugar, honey and the coffee maker all in one area.

Determine drive time What will happen if you leave the house five minutes late? You will guarantee yourself red lights, slow drivers and a nifty traffic jam. Stress levels skyrocket when we run late and then run into further delays.

Make sure that you are realistic about how long your drive will take, factor in red lights, a stop at the coffee shop and potential delays.

Make it your goal to allow yourself enough time so you will arrive 10 minutes early.

Start preparing your day the night before so even the most habitual night owls can become birds of a feather with early birds.

Hazy days for apartment dwellers M

anaging commercial and apartment buildings affords property managers unique insight into human activity unlike any other portal.

We see people at their best, at their worst, and in the everyday aspects of their lives.

After almost three decades in the property management business, I thought I’d seen it all until recently when I toured an apartment complex that I was considering managing and watched as a young boy and his playmate pedaled their bikes through a waft of marijuana smoke coming from a neighbor’s unit.

They skidded to a stop as if they’d both stumbled into a crime scene.

The joy of their play now ripped from their faces, they began planning what to say to their moms when they came home

smelling like weed.

“My mom is going to kill me” said one.

“It’s all over me” said the other.

Their neighbor, also out enjoying a sunny day on his Tom first floor patio, Hoban lifted his head up sort of acknowledging the scene he’d realty created, then went markets right back to take another hit.

This is the new reality of the loosened marijuana laws laid upon ordinary lives in apartment buildings and dense neighborhoods.

Know your choices for Social Security I

n 2014, more than 59 million Americans will receive Social Security benefits — totaling nearly $863 billion. These benefits represent about 39 percent of the income of the elderly. While Social Security benefits probably won’t provide the bulk of your retirement revenue, this reliable addition to your income stream comes with many advantages. Unlike other sources, your Social Security benefits are guaranteed for life, regularly adjusted for cost of living, taxed less than ordinary income and are not exposed to market risks.

Full retirement age is the age at which your full benefit amount becomes available.

It used to be age 65, but is now gradually increasing to 67, depending on your year of birth.

Claiming benefits before you hit full retirement age can come with penalties as high as a 25 percent reduction in benefits for the rest of your life.

Conversely, if you apply for Social Security after full retirement age, your benefit will increase by 8 percent for each year you delay. If your full retirement age is 66 and you apply at 67, your benefit

will be 108 percent of your full-retirement-age amount. At 68 it will be 116 percent, and so on, up to age 70.

When should you apply? The answer depends.

On the one hand, starting sooner could mean you’d have more years to collect payments.

On the other hand, if you wait, your benefit will be higher but you may have less time to enjoy it.

It may help to calculate your breakeven age — the point at which you would collect the same dollar amount regardless of whether you claim at 62 or 70.

After you know your break-even age, you will want to think about your overall health, your family’s history of longevity and your personal financial situation before you make a decision.

You may also consider working a few more years. In addition to raising your Social Security benefit, a few more years of earnings could allow you to pay down debt.

You’d also be able to add to your retirement savings while reducing your retirement drawdown period at the same time.

A spouse may also be eligible to receive benefits based on your earnings record, as long as you are taking your own benefits.

Spousal benefits are half of your benefits, if taken at full retirement age. Widows and widowers are also eligible for survivor benefits, which equal the benefits the deceased would have received if still living.

Many enjoy 30 years of retirement or more, and the decisions you make in your 60s can determine the amount of income you’ll have in your 70s, 80s and 90s.

Weed and weed smoke seems to be everywhere now.

Unlike cigarette smoke or the inviting smell of a barbecue, people still have a reaction to marijuana smoke. Estimates are that 15 percent of apartment dwellers in the state of Washington regularly use marijuana.

This predictably affects children and parents especially.

How do the boys convince their parents they were just riding through the apartment complex and not smoking pot themselves?

There’s no way to shed the unique smell of pot when it’s on your clothes, after all.

The fear on their faces was as real as if they’d witnessed a murder.

Complain as their parents might to

management, landlord’s hands are tied in the absence of a lease agreement that prohibits the use of marijuana in apartment units. It’s the law now and people are just exercising their rights.

Where this settles in is still hard to see just yet. After all, pot smokers aren’t all characters from a Cheech & Chong movie.

They’re school teachers, grocery store clerks and software engineers.

Like other forms of freedom, they will need to find a sweet spot between exercising their new rights and courteousness extended to their neighbors and others.

In the meantime, parents might have to get used to their children coming home from a bike ride offering the blended smell of marijuana and barbecue as an ordinary part of apartment living.

Reaching out and annoying someone

T

his column is about business and how technology can help businesses work smarter and improve their bottom line.

But every once in a while I run across an Sven egregious abuse Mogelgaard of technology and Tech Talk I just have to speak out.

This rant is directed at any business that uses any kind of automated call screening system.

You know the kind I’m talking about: the one that asks callers to press a key or say something so the call gets to the proper person or department.

Back in the day I used to program these things — called IBVRs or VRUs — for banks, cruise lines and other major call centers.

I know they can be useful and save the caller a lot of frustration, but only if used properly. Here are some tips for any business using (or planning to use) one of these systems.

Tip 1: Use the minimum number of prompts. Do your customers really need to spend more than 30 seconds entering information? Are there really that many departments to choose from?

Tip 2: If you ask callers to enter information such as their account

number, make sure that whoever gets that call also gets that information. Having to repeat information already given is a waste of your caller’s time.

Tip 3: Never hang up on a caller. It’s easy to get lost in a complicated menu.

Always transfer a call to a live body if there’s any chance the caller is having problems finding what they need. And never, ever tell a caller you know there’s a problem in their area and hang up on them.

Tip 4: Always give the caller a way to get to a live person. I’ve personally been in a menu that doesn’t offer the help I need.

Talking to someone who can understand what the customer needs and get them to the proper person or department will save frustration on the caller’s part and prevent whoever ultimately talks to this caller from getting an ear full when they do finally reach someone.

Tip 5: Call your own customer service number at least once a week. Seriously.

Is the volume of the music on hold reasonable? Is the music free of static?

How often do you tell folks on hold how important their call is? Is it reasonable to you?

Tip 6: Finally, don’t insult your callers’ intelligence. If they wanted to use your website or hear a list of Frequently Asked Questions they wouldn’t be sitting on hold.

Ask customers to help with research A

s a card-carrying research nerd, I am a big proponent of gathering “voice of the customer” data, and using it to optimize marketing activities and supporting operations.

Many companies, however, do not have a research budget. Establishing a board of advisers is a great low-cost alternative.

You don’t need to be a large corporation to recruit a board of advisers.

I’m not referring to a traditional board of industry and business experts; rather, an advisory board of key customers.

The purpose of having a board of advisers is to give your best customers an opportunity to share their preferences, perceptions and suggestions.

Recruit 12 to 15 customers for a term of one or two years... staggering terms will ensure continuity. Not every customer adviser will be able to attend every meeting, so you’ll want a large enough group to account for a 75 percent attendance level.

It is also good to switch out board members to keep them from getting burned out, and to glean fresh input and ideas.

Your board of advisers should meet two to four times a year. Depending on whether you are a business selling to consumers or selling to businesses, you would conduct lunch or dinner time meetings.

Consumers usually prefer evenings, and business customers typically prefer daytime meetings.

You will also want to offer an appropriate incentive, such as free or discounted products and services. We have a Bay Area client who holds two board meetings per year at destination locations like Las Vegas. They pay for their advisers’ airfare and hotel, which is an ample recruiting incentive — in fact, it has become a coveted position.

It is best to have different agendas (or conversations) to accomplish different objectives for each meeting.

You can use your board

of advisers meetings to learn about how customers experience your products, services and people.

These adviser meetings are also great opportunities to share new ideas about your products and promotion.

I’ve facilitated board of advisers meetings where customers determined

new product attributes, and even product names.

You can also run advertising concepts and promotion ideas past your advisers to get their feedback.

Think about how your business can make the best use of an advisory board; then recruit a diverse group you feel will represent your customer

base. Don’t just recruit a fan club; rather, go after the customer segment that you want to replicate.

There is no better way to understand how customers experience your brand than to ask them. Anything you do to enhance your customers’ experience usually results in higher customer

satisfaction, loyalty and referrals.

The key to success is acting on the input of your customer advisers… and doing so will likely boost your business.

Economic Alliance Snohomish County (EASC) continues its work to successfully establish Snohomish County’s role as a local, regional, and national leader for economic vitality.

With this in mind, we have set the following as our strategic goals for 2014-2015: market the region, attract new investment, improve quality of place, respond to employer needs, connect regional leaders, and engage the community.

Our goal to engage the community states that we will encourage Snohomish County’s public and private sector leaders to engage in our organization’s business development efforts, and to be proactive in supporting our current investors as well as

We will augment our high-quality events list with the addition of a new luncheon series where business leaders can hear from a speaker on a relevant business topic, network with each other, and engage with EASC. Also, we will bolster our opportunities for social networking after work each month. Stay tuned as we roll-out more details soon!

We are very excited about these new engagement avenues, as well as the ones that our signature events and our premier events, Annual Meeting and Summer Networking, will continue providing!
