Pierce County News Lakewood City Hall to host Pierce County Council meeting In an effort to involve more citizens in government, Pierce County Council will relocate its regular Tuesday meeting to Lakewood Tuesday evening. The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Lakewood City Hall, located at 6000 Main Street SW, in Lakewood. "The Pierce County Charter requires us to conduct at least one evening council meeting every year in each of the districts. Bringing the council out into the community gives our friends and neighbors better access to us and to county government," said Pierce County Councilmember Doug Richardson (pictured), who represents the 6th Council District. "These in-district meetings are always a great opportunity to hear from local governments and community groups and I'm looking forward to meeting with folks tomorrow evening in Lakewood." In addition to regularly-scheduled agenda items, Pierce County Council will hear updates from Lakewood Mayor Don Anderson, DuPont Mayor Michael Grayum, Steilacoom Town Administrator Paul Loveless, and Anderson Island Citizens Advisory Board representative Carol Paschal. Pierce County Council will also hear from Pierce County Performance Audit Analyst Bill Vetter regarding the evaluations of the Pierce County Corrections Bureau's jail operations. Lake Louise boat ramp and Melody Lane Southwest closed for construction The Lake Louise boat ramp located off of Melody Lane Southwest in Lakewood will be closed 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays through Sun., Dec. 7 while crews work on the sanitary sewer pump station located next to the ramp. Property owners who store their boats on the lake and those who launch from this ramp should plan accordingly. The portion of Melody Lane Southwest in front of the pump station will be closed to traffic 24 hours a day Oct. 6 through Sun., Dec. 7. City seeks applicants for Landmarks Preservation Commission Posted online Mon., Oct. 6 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor The City of Tacoma is accepting applications to fill four volunteer positions on Tacoma's Landmarks Preservation Commission. The Landmarks Preservation Commission oversees the establishment and regulation of landmarks, local historic districts, proposed name changes for public facilities, and certain property tax incentives. The Landmarks Preservation Commission consists of 11 members who are nominated by the Mayor of Tacoma and confirmed by a majority vote of Tacoma City Council. Membership is comprised of three architects, four individuals with professional expertise in preservation related fields, one representative from the Tacoma Arts Commission, and three interested citizens. Non-voting ex-officio members may be appointed to represent property and business owners within Tacoma's historic districts. The City of Tacoma seeks to fill the following vacant spots on the Landmarks Preservation Commission: Architect (one position) — This position is open to individuals residing in Tacoma who are currently or have in the past been professionally certified architects; At-Large (two positions) — These positions are open to individuals with a demonstrated interest in historic preservation who are residents ing the work. Pierce County's contractor, McClure and Sons, Inc., is replacing the pump station's existing natural gas generator (pictured) with a new diesel generator. The $361,365 project also includes replacement of electrical cabinet enclosures and installation of water backflow prevention devices. A temporary generator will be installed and removed upon start-up of the new generator. This is part of a preservation project that replaces emergency generators at 28 pump stations in Lakewood. The generators are used during power outages to keep the sewage pump station in service and avoid possible wastewater overflows. The existing generators were installed between 1983 and 1986, and have reached the end of their expected useful life. Lack of replacement parts and manufacturer service technicians make these generators
