Major challenges lie ahead Premera’s new CEO, Jeff Roe, takes the helm in the middle of uncertainty in the health care industry

Jeff Roe is a little uncomfortable with the magazine profile.

It’s not that he’s unpleasant or difficult.

On the contrary, he’s gracious and accommodating, even as a photographer directs him in a photo shoot to lean into that table and tilt his head this way.

Roe is squeamish about the attention because he doesn’t view himself as any more special than any of the other 3,700 people who work at Premera Blue Cross.

He views himself as just one of the team.

Sure, everyone has a different title, a different role. His new one just happens to be chief executive officer of the largest health insurer in the state.

“I realize we have roles and responsibilities, but at the end of the day, it’s about delivering to our customers,” he says.

“What does it take to do that? No task is beyond me if it will help in that regard.”

Effective Oct. 1, Roe takes the helm of Premera, and he does so in the midst of incredible uncertainty. The Affordable Care Act is the most significant social program expansion in recent U.S. history.

Every American can access health care coverage. That has created some colossal unknowns for an industry built on anticipating and minimizing risk. There are other challenges, chief among them the ever-ballooning cost of health care.

“We’re now operating in an environment with a lot of uncertainties,” Roe says. “The Affordable Care Act is a catalyst for change, but the change is not entirely known by everybody.”

■■■ Roe came to Premera in 1996. The nonprofit, with headquarters in Mountlake Terrace, provides health benefits and insurance services. Then the company had a different name and what Roe euphemistically calls “some challenging business issues.” The insurer was in trouble financially — as in losing millions of dollars in trouble. That happened in part because of failed state health care reform, but there were other issues too. Roe liked the people and he liked the challenge of making something better.

Roe created a marketing department and helped turn an organization that had been quiet in the marketplace into a brand. He eventually moved on to

— Jeff Roe sales and marketing. It seems every area he touched in the company was better for his involvement, says H.R. Brereton “Gubby” Barlow, who stepped down this year from the top position at Premera.

“As he moved into his various roles, each improved with his leadership,” Barlow says.

Others in the health care industry describe Roe as personable, a good listener, a strategic thinker and a leader willing to imagine different ways the company could reinvent itself.

“He’s someone I look forward to working with,” says Preston Simmons, chief executive of Providence Regional Medical Center’s Northwest Region.

The leadership of the Everett Clinic knows Roe well, says Chief Executive Officer Rick Cooper.

“His selection at Premera is recognition of his ability to build constructive and mutually supportive working relationships,” Cooper says. “Strengthening strategic relationships with partners will be important in the quest to increase

quality of care and reduce costs for patients. Premera has distinguished itself through operational excellence and under Jeff’s leadership I expect that to continue.”

Gubby Barlow arrived not long after Roe. Under his leadership, Premera turned around. He recruited a team of leaders, and the nonprofit introduced a new suite of products and implemented a new administrative system that improved ability to process claims and serve customers. They began to snag large national accounts, beginning with Microsoft.

When an effort to go public to raise capital failed, Barlow and his team found other ways to strengthen Premera’s financial position. After a trip to Japan, Barlow implemented the Toyota “lean” philosophy in which an organization focuses obsessively on what the customer values and does away with the waste. That philosophy and a set of leadership tenets became an embedded part of Premera’s culture.

Barlow, who is 64, says it’s a good time for him to step aside. The organization’s balance sheet is solid. He will continue to be available in an advisory capacity.

■■■ Roe describes himself as a strategist and a servant leader who wants to enable others to be the best they can. His biggest influences as a leader are Barlow along with President Abraham Lincoln and

his father-in-law, Gene Cartledge, who rose from humble beginnings to become CEO of a Fortune 200 company. What Roe admires about his father-in-law, now retired, is the man’s humility.

“He didn’t distinguish people based on who they are or who he was,” Roe says.

“Everyone was good and deserved to be valued. I hope I reflect that too.”

How to lead well is something Roe has worked on for years and thinks a lot about. His new office at Premera is nearly bare, other than a row of books on leadership. He says there’s a reason his office door is glass: He wants to be visible and available to people. When he talks about the events that shaped him, he points back to another influential leader in his life: Sen. Slade Gorton.

Roe, 49, is a local. He grew up in Bellevue and attended Sammamish High School. He was a solid student but in his own estimation, didn’t stand out in a remarkable way.

That changed at the University of Washington, when a natural talent for leadership emerged. He served as a leader in his fraternity and in the Greek system.

An internship in Washington, D.C., his senior year had him thinking about public service and cemented a desire to a return to the capital.

Then Roe made a decision that changed the course of his life. He decided to work on Sen. Slade Gorton’s campaign.

And he didn’t get just any job. He became the senator’s driver. It was 1988 and Gorton was running against liberal congressman Mike Lowry. It was Roe’s job to drive the senator to and from campaign functions in Gorton’s well-used beige Ford LTD. Sometimes Gorton’s dog Brigadoon came along for the ride. During those drives, Roe chatted with the senator — sometimes about the inconsequential, sometimes about the issues of the day.

“I thought it was the best job on the campaign because I spent my time with the candidate and not back at the office stuffing envelopes,” Roe says.

After Gorton won the election, Roe accompanied him to D.C. and worked in his office. The experience connected him with important and powerful people.

He was immersed in “an environment of smart people trying to do good things” — people such as Mike McGavick, who later served as CEO of Safeco. He credits that time as shaping and steering all that came later. It’s in D.C. that he met his wife, Perri, who worked nearby for Bill Bradley. After his time in D.C. ended, Roe returned to Seattle and joined a consulting firm started by people associated with the Gorton campaign. A few years later, one of his consulting clients became

Blue Cross of Washington — what’s now known as Premera Blue Cross.

Initially, Roe thought he might go into politics. Once he entered the business world, he realized he was, as he puts it, “a results-orientated person.” He found the public sector more focused on process.

“My feeling is if we’re going to do something, let’s do it to some effect,” he says. “Let’s conclude the work. Let’s move forward.”

■■■ Roe moves forward with some considerable challenges ahead.

Premera got pummeled in the press earlier this year after its lobbying efforts stripped a database requirement from a widely supported bill. The database would have allowed consumers to compare medical procedures from hospital to hospital.

Then, in a press release, the state insurance commissioner blamed Premera’s lobbying for “gutting” a different insurance bill that was supposed to protect consumers from Ponzi schemes and financial meltdowns.

The organization got labeled as one that doesn’t support transparency.

That bothers Roe, who says the company believes in transparency and already discloses the cost of services. He says the matter has nothing to do with transparency. The insurer didn’t want to turn over proprietary information to a third party.

It contends that the numbers wouldn’t

have relevance because patients couldn’t see how much of a particular service was covered by their health plan. The company was concerned about the long-term cost of the database and that those costs might be passed on to health plans and their customers.

“Premera is a collaborative place,” he says. “The extent we were portrayed as not part of the solution was difficult for us and is not consistent with how we like to do our business.”

More pressing than bad PR is the ever ballooning cost of health care, which is just under one-fifth of the gross domestic product in the U.S. and is expected to rise exponentially in the coming years.

Roe sees an industry that holds an ever larger place in the economy. He sees more integration and leaps in technology that allow hospitals, doctors and insurers to share patient information. He sees consolidation of the industry, as hospitals and providers form partnerships.

For instance, Premera is working with “accountable care organizations” — networks of providers who are paid a premium to deal with all of a patient’s needs.

One of the biggest changes is a move toward focusing on wellness, he says. The old fee-for-service model rewards doctors and hospitals for performing more procedures. Instead, Premera and increasingly other health care organizations are talking about how to keep people from needing procedures in the first place.

With the Affordable Care Act, more people are shopping for health plans as individuals, not through an employer.

Roe says that’s driving some good change in the industry as consumers seek information about the cost and quality of care.

It also creates tremendous unknowns.

People in this state could buy individual and family plans beginning in October 2013 through the state-run Washington Health Benefit Exchange. Nearly a million individual and family plans were purchased. The majority of plans purchased were those offered by Premera or its subsidiary LifeWise.

Premera, of course, is pleased to have the customers. The nonprofit now serves just under 2 million members and is growing. In the past nine months, Premera and LifeWise’s individual market grew by 70 percent. The insurer took on 66,000 new individual members just through August.

The rub is selling health care plans to individuals is riskier business than providing coverage through employers. Premera and other insurers must set rates months in advance. They’re serving new customers with new products and new rates based on assumptions rather than claims data.

National health care reform opened coverage for all, and that’s good, Roe said.

But perhaps just as important, it brought all the key stakeholders to the table.

“It’s brought people together,” he says.

“We’ve got to talk about how to fix this system because it’s in need of change.”

Accountable care puts patients first Doctors and hospitals given incentives to deliver better care and save money

H

ere’s how the typical health plan works.

You go to the doctor, she orders a procedure and then insurance pays for it.

The problem with that model is it creates an incentive for doctors and hospitals to order more tests and procedures.

Two major local health organizations are trying a new model that creates an incentive to keep people healthy. And Boeing is the first employer to sign up.

Providence Health & Services and Swedish Health Services have joined forces to create the Providence-Swedish Health Alliance, one of the first accountable care organizations in the country to work directly with employers on health care benefits for employees.

It’s a tremendous shift in how health care is delivered to employees and has national implications for the future of health care.

Nonunion employees in the Puget Sound area and some union-represented employees and retirees can choose this new option during the annual enrollment for benefits in November. Coverage would begin in January 2015.

offering include: same-day or next-day appointments for urgent primary care and acute care; a concierge service that patients can reach by phone, email or Web; online and mobile access for scheduling appointments, reviewing test results and contacting providers; more options for preventative care and chronic disease management; and tools to help patients choose treatment options.

An accountable care organization is not

insurance, although parts of this model feel like it. Boeing pays the organization, and patients still pay premiums. An insurance company handles administrative functions such as filing claims.

Accountable care organizations work by creating incentives for doctors and hospitals when they deliver better care and save money.

This model is a network of doctors and hospitals that band together to take care

of a group of patients. It emphasizes preventative care. Patients need to get their care within the network so there’s far more coordination of care, which saves money and is better for the patient.

“We’re the caregivers,” explained Dr. Joe Gifford, chief executive of the alliance. “The providers directly make an agreement with Boeing to keep their employees healthy. That’s a direct relationship between the people giving care and the people paying for it.”

Since the alliance is managing all of the patient care, they can invest money in programs that promote wellness or save money. Gifford said moving away from the fee-for-service model liberates the organization to try new things. For instance, they could install kiosks in the factory, where a worker could get a quick question answered with a nurse or make an appointment.

The network of providers within the alliance includes Providence Regional Medical Center and Swedish Medical Centers and more than a dozen other hospitals and clinics, including The Everett Clinic, The Polyclinic and Group Health Medical Centers in Puyallup and Renton.

The alliance also can work with patients with Medicare and Medicaid.

‘Next level’ for Swedish Edmonds $63.5 million expansion will bring a host of new health care services to south Snohomish County

EDMONDS — Swedish Edmonds is embarking on an aggressive expansion course to meet the needs of south Snohomish County.

“We are looking to take the hospital to the next level,” said David Jaffe, chief executive at Swedish Edmonds. “We are all about the community and putting the patient first, serving them and their needs.”

It’s not surprising that the Swedish Edmonds campus is a construction zone.

The roadmap was set in September 2010 when an agreement was signed to have Swedish take over the day-to-day operations of the tax-supported hospital.

At that time Swedish made a promise to meet the growing needs of the community. That involved making a capital investment in the campus.

An $11 million Swedish Cancer Institute facility was completed in 2013. A $12 million electronic medical record system upgrade went live in 2012. Roboticassisted surgeries began in 2011 with a $2.5 million installation.

Now a new $63.5 million building and remodeling project is under way.

The 40,368-square-foot first floor will house the emergency department, an urgent care center and an outpatient diagnostic imaging center. The 37,000-square-foot second floor is being considered as a possible site for operating room suites.

This expansion is the most ambitious since the 9-story patient tower opened in 1972. The original 1964 hospital cost $1 million to construct.

“Edmonds and all of South Snohomish County benefit from the marvelous expansion of the Swedish Edmonds campus for our health care needs,” said Edmonds’ Mayor Dave Earling. “Just as important, Swedish is fulfilling their promised commitment.”

The new building will contain a new emergency room and an urgent care facility.

The current emergency room, originally designed for 25,000 patient visits per year, is now seeing more than 43,000 people. The new emergency room will have the capacity to serve 55,000 patients per year. It is being structured as a Level IV Trauma Center serving patients who are having chest pains, breathing difficulties, broken bones or head injuries.

Nine observation beds will be included to monitor patients for up to 48 hours, without having to admit them into the hospital.

“Adding the Urgent Care component is the responsible thing to do,” said Jaffe.

“With this expansion it will be the right setting at an affordable cost.”

Slated to open late in 2015, Urgent Care services will be aimed at serving patients with non-life threatening ail-

ments, high fevers and sprained joints for example.

“With both options on one campus, we will be able to meet most critical needs,” Jaffe said.

An outpatient imaging center is also included in the plans. It is scheduled to open early in 2016 in the space currently occupied by the emergency room.

With the additions and refurbishing of the campus patient experience and satisfaction with the facility’s atmosphere is taking a lead role with lots of public spaces and a new welcoming entry, Jaffe said.

A multi-purpose room will serve the community with offerings ranging from Pilates and cooking classes to lectures about health-oriented and non-health related topics.

“It is to be a place where the community can come, even if they are not sick, for an experience or education,” Jaffe said.

“As a community hospital, we want to be a community resource in health and beyond.”

A wide, sweeping driveway with a water wall 20 feet wide and 15 feet high will greet visitors. For convenience a three-story parking garage offers 363 spaces of free parking. Plantings and

landscaping will reflect the Edmonds environment.

Art installations will reflect the area.

A driftwood wall in the atrium entryway is being designed using reclaimed wood from Puget Sound. The atrium fireplace surround is emblazoned with fossils. On the wall woodcuts of historical photos will illustrate the area’s past.

“Edmonds is a special place,” Jaffe said.

“It is close knit and passionate about the hospital. It has a pristine environment and is committed to the arts. We are committed to capturing the spirit of Edmonds in this project while creating the ultimate patient experience.”

The Everett Clinic expects close to a million patient visits this year.

Many of those patients were, or will be, among the first to enjoy a number of innovations designed to make their experience easier.

Chris Knapp, the clinic’s chief legal officer, is part of a multi-disciplinary group called Technology and the Future of Medicine. Its members keep their fingers on the pulse of technological advances in health care.

“There’s a lot of talk about high-tech innovations in health care,” Knapp said. “But some of the things that patients really want are things as simple as making it easy to schedule an appointment and making it easier to refill a prescription.”

In June, the Everett Clinic implemented online appointment scheduling for primary care providers, using the patient portal called My Chart. Instead of requesting an appointment time and taking what is offered, patients can now log on and see all of the appointment times that are open and choose the one they prefer.

What surprised Knapp and his colleagues was the way this self-scheduling took off without any advertising or promotion. They did a “soft” opening — no announcement — to see what the initial response would be.

“We turned it on about 5 p.m. one evening and by

7 a.m. the next morning 176 people had already found it and made direct online appointments,” Knapp said.

Currently, online scheduling is only available for primary care providers but eventually will be expanded to 44 specialties.

Close to 200,000 patients are seen each year in the Everett Clinic’s eight walk-in locations.

Online, those patients can look up approximate wait times.

As Knapp explained it, a patient might live by the Gunderson walk-in location in Everett, but if there is a shorter wait

time at Lake Stevens, Silver Lake or another place, they might choose to drive a little farther to be seen a little sooner.

Most of the Everett Clinic’s walk-in locations are open seven days a week and have weekend and evening hours. But in response to patient requests, the Everett Clinic has extended hours at most locations for primary care and most specialty care.

The new standard hours for primary care are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Many locations now offer Saturday hours, as well.

The Everett Clinic also has introduced self-service touch screen kiosks for appointment check-in and other routine tasks at the Smokey Point and Lake Stevens locations. Kiosks are planned for the Everett Founders and Gunderson buildings on the main campus in Everett sometime in October.

The kiosks enable patients to check in more privately, to update insurance information or personal information and to pay bills or co-pays. The kiosks will not replace a reception desk. It’s simply an option.

that some people still like to check in with the receptionist. We’re just offering those kiosks as different way — providing patients with self-service.”

Self service has long been part of the Everett Clinic’s vision. Patients now take it for granted that they can securely go online to pay a bill or to request a prescription refill. And what is good for the patients is usually good for business.

“If we can make easier for a patient to refill a prescription, it makes for a happier patient and makes it more likely that they will comply with their health care treatment,” Knapp said.

Patients can also go online to find out how much common tests and

procedures cost and to review lab results and appointments.

But with all of these new conveniences come concerns about security and privacy. Knapp said the Everett Clinic takes privacy and security very seriously.

In 2012, the clinic fired 13 employees for allegedly accessing patient medical records without authorization. In February 2014, the organization was rewarded for security efforts with a privacy excellence award from FairWarning, a patient privacy monitoring firm.

By Troy McClelland, EASC The Puget Sound region is recognized as the aerospace capital of North America because of final assembly, our supply chain, and the educational programs that support the industry. Aerospace is the foundation that keeps our county economically and technologically strong. To maintain that strength over the long-term, we must build upon the diversity of our business and industrial enterprises, the varied job skills of our workers, and the creativity of our entrepreneurs.

That is why Economic Alliance Snohomish County (EASC) continually works to help all sectors of our economy develop and grow.

Many significant high-tech developments in Snohomish County offer a sampling of just how diverse

our economy really is; an advantage not all regions in the Pacific Northwest, or even across the country, have been able to develop.

In the Technology Corridor, which stretches from Bothell to Everett, you‘ll find Philips Healthcare and their international ultrasound headquarters. Their 2,000 employees design and manufacture medical ultrasound equipment found in hospitals around the world.

Arlington and Marysville have plans to develop a manufacturing industrial center that includes aviation businesses, tooling companies, and innovative, fast growing manufacturing businesses such as MicroGREEN Polymers. This successful start-up business, based on technology developed at the University of Washington, is expanding to increase production of beverage cups made from recycled plastic pop bottles. If you have recently had a cup of coffee on Alaska Airlines, you used their product.

In Bothell, CMC Biologics offers product development and contract manufacturing services to biopharmaceutical companies that want to outsource production. To meet the needs of growing global markets, they established a presence in the U.S. market by acquiring the former ICOS Corp. facility.

CMC has a sister facility in Copenhagen and has combined employment of 400.

At Paine Field, Boeing’s 40,000 workers assemble the 747, 777 and 787 aircraft, plus the new KC-46A refueling tanker.

Boeing draws regional, national, and global suppliers and subcontractors to the county. The new 777X program will attract additional suppliers and education programs in response to the composite and

robotics technologies involved.

These are just a few examples of the types of innovative, quality industrial technology firms operating in Snohomish County. They reflect the county’s expanding employment base, which is creating the necessary diversity of industries to maintain our manufacturing prowess.

Overall, EASC works with business leaders, public organizations, and business associations locally, in Olympia, Washington, D.C., and internationally, to preserve and grow the diversity of our local economy. Speaking with a unified voice, EASC represents the economic interests of Snohomish County, builds relationships with business leaders and develops an annual legislative agenda that aligns and champions Snohomish County business interests.

Preparing for special deliveries

This pregnancy, Mary Greenwood wanted a little extra support and to meet other moms, too.

So the Lake Stevens mom signed up for a program at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett that takes a different approach to caring for pregnant women.

The program is called Centering. It’s part medical appointment and part educational support group.

The same group of expectant moms meets 10 times throughout their pregnancies. The two-hour sessions are led by a nurse midwife, and the women get prenatal care, education and a chance to make some new friends.

The program started last year and is so popular, Providence is hiring four more nurse midwives. Providence expanded the program to its Mill Creek clinic and plans to expand to Monroe next.

In this program, nurse midwives handle the prenatal care and delivery for mothers with low-risk pregnancies.

Babies are delivered at the hospital. If there’s a problem during the pregnancy or delivery, doctors are on hand to handle complications. Pelvic exams occur in private.

Greenwood likes the idea of a natural birth, but prefers to deliver in a hospital.

“I think the idea of a home birth is great but if there are complications, I didn’t want to drive to the hospital while I’m pushing,” Greenwood said.

This model gives physicians more time to care for high-risk patients and to respond to emergencies in labor and delivery, said Dr. Kevin Pieper, chief of Providence’s Women’s and Children’s Division.

“Midwives are really the experts in lowrisk obstetrics,” he said. “They provide more individualized, supportive care to those laboring naturally.”

Midwives also tend to have lower Cesarean rates than physicians, Pieper said. The midwifery group at Providence has the lowest C-section rate in the country for a practice its size.

The model expands Providence’s ability to provide timely access to prenatal care in Snohomish County, he said. Plus, moms are happier.

At a recent session, seven expectant mothers all due in November met at a conference room at Providence’s Pacific campus. Midwife Jamie George met with each mother privately behind a curtain, performing the normal assessments that would happen at a prenatal checkup while music played softly. It’s called “belly time.”

Meanwhile, the other moms chatted while they waited for their turns, and also weighed themselves and took their own blood pressures.

The program actually gives expectant mothers more time with their midwife — a total of 20 hours instead of a series of short visits.

“For us, we get so much more connected to these patients in our groups,”

George said.

The moms can bring a support person.

One expectant father sat close to his partner during the session, holding her hand tenderly. Two other women brought their mothers.

Megan Belisle’s partner will likely be away from home working when their baby comes. He’s a reactor mechanic on

the USS Nimitz. The Marysville woman has family to support her, but she likes the idea of meeting other women who will have babies the same age.

“I absolutely love this,” she said. “I can’t imagine doing something different.”

Once George is finished meeting with all the women, she leads a lively discussion. The program follows a

curriculum developed by a nonprofit called the Centering Healthcare Institute, and this time she spoke about pain management during labor. She let the women’s questions and concerns guide the conversation. Most of the moms in this group are struggling with back pain.

It’s early but the program is showing some promising results. Women participating in the first few groups had fewer preterm deliveries than other women who gave birth at Providence. Of the 35 moms in the program who delivered babies between December and April, two had preterm deliveries — a rate of 5.7 percent compared to the hospital’s rate of 7.74 percent. Providence operates the third-largest birthing center in the state with more than 4,200 babies born annually.

“We’re not sure why,” George said.

“The thought is maybe they’re more educated or comfortable or maybe they’re less stressed. Perhaps they are more aware of the warning signs.”

The mothers universally loved the program. All of the 69 mothers who participated rated the program as either four or five out of five — that’s considered highly satisfied.

George said that the labor and delivery unit manager reports that mothers who have gone through the program are far more prepared post-partum.

“The nurses don’t have to teach them much,” she said.

Elder care industry seeks young blood Inaugural program at WSU in Everett aims to bring in a new management pool

T

he baby boomer generation — all 76 million of them — is beginning to reach retirement age.

Many of them will eventually need to move into assisted living facilities.

That’s creating a burgeoning industry to handle those seniors who will need options for places to live and be cared for during the remainder of their years.

Some of the top facilities of their kind already operate in the Puget Sound region, including Merrill Gardens, Emeritus Senior Living and Aegis Living.

Four years ago, those and other businesses partnered with Washington State University to create a Senior Living Management Program.

That program will be taught at WSU North Puget Sound at Everett starting in January.

The goal is to bring in a wave of people with new ideas and fresh energy into the industry, said Bill Pettit, president and chief operating officer at Merrill Gardens.

“As the industry really evolved over that 20-year period, all of us experienced concern about our ability to attract and engage bright, young management talent,” Pettit said.

“As all of the firms grew fairly significantly, we found ourselves rehiring from the same pool of talent.”

Pettit will serve as the executive-in-residence for the program, teaching upper level classes online to students in Everett and other WSU campuses.

Almost two dozen businesses, most with ties to the industry, put up $500,000 to fund the Senior Living Management program.

Pettit and other executives reached out four years ago to WSU, which has one of the top hospitality business management programs in the nation. Nancy Swanger, director of the hospitality program, saw the natural pairing and quickly tailored a program to meet the needs of the industry and the students.

Pettit said he was in awe of how quickly the idea became a reality.

“We went from first conversation in April four years ago to offering the first course that August,” Pettit said. “It was that quick.”

Pettit and other executives have been traveling to Pullman to teach courses and have raised scholarship funds for students entering into the field.

Meanwhile, WSU this year took over administration of the University Center at Everett Community College. The university this year added electrical engi-

neering, communications and hospitality programs in Everett.

It made sense to start teaching the Senior Living Program in Everett, because it’s so close to many of the top senior living communities in the state, said David Whidbee, interim dean of WSU’s School of Business.

“We elected to put the senior living resources in Everett because of the number of communities on the west side and the opportunities to offer professional development (and) certificate programs,” Whidbee said in an email.

Pettit has seen the industry surge in the past 20 years. He started his career in

commercial banking and made a decision to switch careers.

“I woke up one day and decided I didn’t want to be a commercial banker,” Pettit said.

He joined in 1992 the R.D. Merrill Co., a timber company looking to diversify. Pettit helped the company buy its first senior living community in Seattle in 1993.

The company has 26 operating and development communities in four states.

As a career, Pettit said managing senior living communities is attractive.

“It’s always appealed to me a tremendous social responsibility and a great business to build,” Pettit said.

“You don’t often find in a career those kinds of high-touch, high-impact businesses that are attractive financially.”

Monroe hospital puts spotlight on women’s health

Cascade Valley Hospital is gearing up for its first ever Women’s Expo, taking place Oct. 11.

“We feel very strongly as a good community partner, we have a responsibility to help share health and safety information with our community,” said Jennifer Egger, Community Relations Coordinator.

The expo is a great opportunity for the community to come and check out all that Cascade Valley Hospital has to offer, she said. The expo runs 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and will showcase local health-related businesses as well as Cascade Valley Hospital’s services and programs. The event is free; vendors can rent a booth for $50.

“We would like those attending to come in and learn a little about our services at the hospital and the clinic, learn about what services are offered in the community, and even get a little shopping done, if possible,” Egger said.

Vendors are expected to include dentists, chiropractors, health and fitness groups, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef and more.

The choice to have this expo focus on women was an easy one, with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Egger said.

The public hospital is known for its mammography equipment and they plan on showcasing that at the expo as well.

“We will be doing free mammograms during the entire expo for our guests if they are interested,” Egger said.

There will also be raffle drawings, gift baskets, and other fun giveaways.

Although the event is focused on women’s and girls’ health and safety, anyone can attend.

“Men can definitely attend as well,” Egger said. “We will be having some man-cave specials being served up at the café for them too.”

Right after the expo they will be kicking off the 5K Cascade Color Run at 2:30 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation for Women’s Health.

“Come have fun and learn about the product and services that are available right here in our community,” she said.

Coffee with a slice of social conscience

CAMANO ISLAND — A lot has changed in business since Jeff Ericson started the journey that would lead him to opening Camano Island Coffee Roasters 14 years ago at Terry’s Corner.

Born into a family of ministers, Ericson started his young adult life on a theological path, assuming he would follow in their footsteps.

“I was so conflicted,” Ericson remembered. “I didn’t follow that traditional theological process. In the day, you were either in ministry or you were not. There was no halfway mark.”

After realizing he was not made in the mold for the ministry, Ericson ended up following a path in business that proved extremely successful — first as an executive at Hickory Farms, then opening a printing business that enabled him to retire as a multimillionaire by age 30.

Then he experienced an epiphany.

He developed a serious case of hepatitis and was told he had about six months

to live.

Thinking he was at the end of his life, Ericson realized that his business career, although successful, left him unfulfilled.

At the time, Ericson and his wife were living in Arizona. His dearest wish was to spend the final months of his life in what he considered to be the most beautiful place in the world — Western Washington.

The move saved his life in more ways than one.

First, he received great medical care.

The University of Washington was testing some experimental hepatitis drugs and that proved to be a game-changer.

But he also was able to do something about the definition of success that had been troubling him.

“People have to have their own journeys,” Ericson said. “For me, that had to be my journey to change my thought process.”

He learned about a Seattle-based company called Agros, which helps families in poor regions of Mexico and Central America to purchase land and establish

BUSINESS PROFILE the basic means to sustainably support themselves, such as growing tilapia, peppers and, notably, coffee.

Ericson found the Agros business model inspiring. There weren’t very many businesses around at that time focused on helping people to help themselves.

In fact, there wasn’t even a phrase to describe this kind of business model. It wasn’t until 2006, when Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi businessman, won the Nobel Peace Prize for pioneering the concept of microloans, that the phrase “social business” was coined.

So Ericson found himself located in the epicenter of coffee culture, the Pacific Northwest, where he could create a coffee-based business that could change people’s lives simply by selling a product that was organic, shade-grown and ethically produced.

The result was Camano Island Coffee Roasters. He saw his new enterprise as one that would appeal to the type of consumers most likely to consider the impact those products have on the people involved in the production chain.

Ericson wants to make sure people don’t make the mistake of thinking of Camano Island Coffee Roasters as a cause marketing company instead of a social business.

Consumers still use the terms interchangeably, he said, but there is a big difference.

Social businesses don’t just give money to a charity, he said. They work to develop

a clean supply chain in addition to doing good works and promoting the business.

Camano Island Coffee Roasters works closely with Agros Guatemala and World Vision to ensure a clean, ethical and fairly traded supply chain.

And he’s visited the regions where his coffee is grown, and, he said, observed the benefits “fair trade” practices can have on

farmers and others involved in a coffee production chain.

Ericson believes that the time of social business is at hand. Consumers, especially younger consumers, pay attention to where products come from and refuse to immediately settle on the cheapest. They want products that they know are ethically produced and sustainable.

“If 80 percent of the people in Puget Sound made the right decision just with their coffee, we could transform the world just from that one region,” Ericson said.

And he believes that other companies are primed to follow. Ericson teaches the social-business concept at conferences around the world and he has noticed that the coming generation seems to intuitively embrace the ideas connected with it.

“The world is changing,” Ericson said.

“And it is energizing to see.”

Over the last 14 years, Ericson has evolved Camano Island Roasters into something more than just coffee. It’s a teaching tool about what businesses can and should do.

The company is also partnering to develop new products.

In the near future, he said, look for a completely natural shelf stable cheese snack. It’s 100 percent cheese in bite-sized morsels that has been dried using a new technology to keep it crunchy and savory.

Yet it is pure cheese with no additives, Ericson said.

Using the same new process, other healthy snacks — apples, cherries and other natural products, are in development. They have also developed an allseed, dairy-free, gluten-free cracker that is sweetened with honey.

“We’re constantly innovating and creating products and the profits from those products go to create more social business opportunities,” Ericson said.

Totally focused on video tech

MARYSVILLE — In the mid-1990s, when digital technology was quickly reshaping the world, Guy Cochran saw firsthand what it could do for pictures.

He developed film in a darkroom in high school. By college, he was using an early version of Photoshop.

A few years later, when he became a videographer, he worked with digital cameras that cost a tenth as much as film and analog alternatives.

“When digital video hit the scene, that’s when it all blew up for the entire industry,” said Cochran, 39.

The soft-spoken gear junkie now owns the online video equipment retailer DVeStore.com, which stands for “digital video e-store.” Headquartered on a quiet street near I-5 in Marysville, the warehouse stocks broadcast-grade microphones, lighting kits, green screens and sleek video cameras that shoot in 4K (twice the resolution of a high-def TV).

“When I started this, it was like my toy store,” he said. “That was really cool because I got to sort of fulfill this gear fetish of mine.

It was always like Christmas day.”

DVeStore has shipped equipment to ESPN and Sony, to crew members of TV shows like “Desperate Housewives” and “Jeopardy” and to universities around the country.

The store is on track to do $8 million in sales in 2014. Most orders are from customers outside of Washington, but a noteworthy slice of business comes from local companies that work face-to-face with Cochran.

“All the biggies you can think of: Microsoft, Amazon, Nintendo,” Cochran said.

DVeStore has furnished Amazon’s corporate offices with cameras, tripods and LED light panels, as well as outfitted all of their conference rooms with the latest video technology.

“They know that when their stuff breaks, we’ll have one in stock and I’ll run it down there to save their production, which I’ve had to do,” Cochran said.

That convenience is why Daniel Cardenas, creative director of Sierra Media in Everett, buys from DVeStore. A few years ago he needed something quickly but didn’t want to pay overnight shipping from an East Coast retailer. He drove up to Marysville, met Cochran and left with the equipment.

“It was delightful,” Cardenas said. “It’s great to be able to go there.”

With customers including Microsoft, Intel and Providence Medical, Cardenas needs to stock top-of-the-line video production equipment.

“It’s very specialized,” he said of DVeStore’s catalog.

“It’s not a Best Buy. It’s pro gear.”

Such pro gear includes a $1,300 shotgun mic, $3,500 studio lighting kit and $7,500 audio mixer.

There’s a rig with seven cameras controlled by joysticks and live stream video technology that broadcasts over cellular signals.

For much of this highend stuff, Cochran says DVeStore is the only supplier in the Northwest.

Still, the bulk of their orders come from humbler clients: wedding videographers, amateur filmmakers, people starting YouTube channels — anyone looking to give their project a professional feel.

These customers might try a $79 lavalier mic that hooks into an iPhone, or a $129 LED light that attaches to the top of a camera.

“Everybody has a different budget,” Cochran said.

Cochran’s first job in the industry was at a firm that made giant photo prints in Seattle. He eventually left to start his own videography company, Everett-based Pixel Motion.

In 2001, he was lured out to Los Angeles by a company called DVcreators, which makes video production tutorials, and shifted his focus to teach-

ing others.

“I was doing a lot of traveling,” Cochran said.

“I was teaching all over the country, I was just flying every other week somewhere.”

He led workshops full of teachers, each paying $700 to attend. He taught Apple employees, and remembers seeing Steve Jobs walk around.

In 2004, DVcreators asked Cochran to manage the equipment arm of the company, which only sold a handful of items but was bringing in about $100,000 annually.

Cochran moved back to Washington and formed a new corporation, DVeStore. He settled into a building on the Mukilteo waterfront and more than doubled the store’s sales in the first year of business.

DVeStore set out to assemble a catalog of video production essentials, starting with a three-light kit.

“To make people look really good you’ve gotta understand lighting,” Cochran said. “It comes down to the quality of the light, the intensity, and learning how to adjust your camera settings to get that optimum exposure.”

Then they began selling microphones.

“Audio is 50 percent of your story,” he said. “If you get great audio, then you’re gonna have a great product. That’s what we’re

trying to drill into people’s heads.”

Cochran started shooting — and starring in — videos where he compared the sound quality of different microphones. DVeStore’s YouTube channel became a destination for people looking to hear audio demos. That, along with going to trade-shows and being active in online videography forums, helped Cochran further bolster his reputation in the field.

Also adding to his industry cachet is that he remained an active videographer. Sasquatch! Music Festival, for example, hired him to shoot at its main stage in 2008. In a fit of rock star fury, the lead singer of the band The Mars Volta bent down in front of Cochran and tried to grab his $22,000 camera, but Cochran resisted, holding up a fist and threatening to punch the singer. By 2008, DVeStore had hit $1 million in gross sales and needed more space. It also didn’t help that the bottom floor of the Mukilteo building was rented out by glassblower James Mongrain, a disciple of Dale Chihuly, so the continuous hum of the furnace affected the sound of videos shot in the studio. Cochran relocated the company to its current warehouse in Marysville.

While Cochran’s industry know-how and personal brand helped DVeStore’s sales, he was struggling with the business side of things. So in 2011, he enrolled in the Small Business Accelerator Program at Everett Community College, a yearlong course that teaches business strategy to companies with $500,000 to $15 million in sales.

The program inspired Cochran to buy QuickBooks, to get his finances in order and to leave as much capital as possible in the company at all times.

“All of a sudden it was like a light bulb went off,” he said. “We got more employees, we got in shape for the bank to loan us money.”

Travis Snider, the head instructor of the Small Business Accelerator Program, called Cochran “a leading edge entrepreneur” who “moves at lighting speed.”

“He’s calm, sensible — he makes these things seem simple,” Snider said.

“I don’t see very many businesspeople that would even have the ability to think like he does.”

Cochran has since joined the program’s CEO Roundtable, a group of former students who gather with Snider to discuss the successes and woes of their companies.

“If it wasn’t for that class, this company would still have three

employees, and I’d still be answering phones,” Cochran said.

DVeStore now has 11 full-time employees.

They’re ditching QuickBooks and spending $100,000 for NetSuite’s Enterprise Resource Planning software. Their warehouse stocks over 1,000 different items and they sell a few dozen products through Amazon.com.

Cochran, who turns 40 in April, is married with four kids, two grandkids and a foster child. He unwinds by driving his 2006 Maserati Grand Sport with fellow members of the Ferrari Club of America, which organizes meetups of luxury car owners.

“We’ll go out on drives, and head to Mount Baker, Mount St. Helens or Mount Rainer and just go play on the backroads,” Cochran said.

In early September, DVeStore signed a letter of intent to lease the bottom floor of the former Herald building at 1213 California St. in downtown Everett. Cochran hopes being just a little further south will help reach local customers who don’t realize the store is so close.

“Marysville seems far,” he said. “We’re hoping that our new move to Everett will entice people to come from Seattle.”

After a nationwide search, the Port of Everett Commission has selected Les Reardanz to serve as the new CEO. Reardanz will begin his new role at the Port on November 16.

Currently, he serves as the Port’s Deputy Executive Director, the second highest staff leadership position at the Port. He oversees the Port’s environmental cleanups, public policy, communications, human resources, legal and contacting activities. In addition to his civilian duties, Reardanz is

a Captain in the Naval Reserve and is the Commanding Officer, US Pacific Fleet reserve legal command that advises the Pacific Fleet and its subordinate commands.

“I am very honored to have been chosen for CEO of the Port of Everett. Everett yarn shop specializes in ‘eye candy’ For HBJ

EVERETT — Shopping at Great Yarns! is meant to be a colorful experience.

Just ask owner Fontelle Jones.

“Color is our world,” she said.

Bright, dark, pastel, jewel and many other colorful tones are part of the specialty yarn for sale through five rooms of a white house at 4023 Rucker Ave. in Everett. Finished projects including hats, sweaters and scarves are carefully placed near displays of different types of yarn to help shoppers envision their own creative knitting or crocheting project.

“We’re selling vision and that’s why when walk around this store our focus has always been about models and samples and those things that inspire you,” Jones said. “Anyone can sell you a ball of yarn but we’re here to inspire. We’re here to make sure you’re successful.”

Success is something Jones knows how to achieve. She opened Great Yarns! three decades ago in the same location where it is today. She remembers latching onto the idea of opening her own yarn store in 1984.

Jones said she was “an extremely enthusiastic new knitter” at the time who quickly became tired of driving to Seattle for quality yarn. She was at a nearby grocery store when she noticed a for rent sign on nearby house. Jones made a phone call that led to the opening of Great Yarns! on Sept. 15, 1984.

A few renters were already living in the

downstairs part of the building back then, Jones said. She didn’t have enough yarn to fill the main floor so she sublet one of the rooms.

At the start of her business, sales representatives told Jones that a shop like hers wouldn’t survive in Everett but she didn’t listen. Jones kept a yarn selection that appealed to a large shopper base and added more fashionable, interesting, and higher quality yarn with every little profit she made. Her business grew.

“It’s just evolved and my customers have absolutely supported that evolution,” Jones said. “Some of those sales reps have since come back and said they wouldn’t have believed it.”

Great Yarns! has largely grown through word of mouth, Jones said. She purposely sought a broader customer base 15 years ago when she started participating in trade shows across the country. She’ll be part of six shows this year, including one October 9-12 in

Hartford, Connecticut.

“We have a far broader based customer than just our physical location,” Jones said. “There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t ship out of state and often out of country. It’s great fun for us.”

Jones also enjoys offering creative yarns for her customers, including those exclusively made just for her shop, called Firecracker and Lightning Strikes. A blue and bright green yarn in the Lightning Strikes line is named 12th Man. Another thing that makes Great Yarns! unique is that it’s a full service yarn shop, Jones said. In addition to selling a variety of yarn, needles, hooks, buttons and more supplies, the store also offers knitting and crocheting classes, finishing services, and a mending service.

Barbara Pykonen of Arlington has been shopping at Great Yarns! since it first opened. Her trip to the store on Sept. 18 was to stock up on yarn for future projects.

“I used to work in Everett so I came here daily,” she said. “It’s like eye candy.”

There’s always a project in progress for Wendy Gilpin, the shop’s office manager. That same day was no exception as she worked to knit a Seahawks-inspired hat in between answering questions from customers.

“We’re just family,” Gilpin said. “Even Fontelle’s friends have become friends of mine. I love it all. It’s just a lot of fun.”

An especially fun part of every year at Great Yarns! is when teddy bears are donated by WARM 106.9 FM. Volunteer

knitters dress the bears in handmade outfits before they are sent off to Camp Erin, a bereavement camp for children and given to children receiving hospice care.

“I’ve been here for almost 12 years and I don’t remember a year when we have done less than 100 bears,” Gilpin said.

Giving back to her community is important to Jones. She serves on the Puget Sound Kidney Centers Foundation Board of Directors, on the Providence Hospice and Home Care Foundation, Snohomish County Board of Trustees, and on the Camp Fire Snohomish County Board of Directors.

Jones is very involved in the growth of hospice care in Snohomish County, is philanthropic and full of energy, said Ken Clay, Providence Hospice and Home Care Foundation president. “She’s very outgoing and very friendly,” he said. “She’s just a very easy person to get to know and very welcoming in her business.”

Longevity was never really part of her original business plan, Jones said. She wouldn’t continue operating Great Yarns! if she didn’t enjoy it. An official anniversary celebration is yet to be determined, Jones added.

“It will be a celebration for my customers,” she said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be here.”

Everett boat builders test craft around Vancouver Island

They’ve known Lundin for years. Stebbens and Harty signed their leases at the Port of Everett on the same day that Lundin signed his for the distillery.

“Rob and Kim and I share the business owner fraternity, but we’re also really passionate boaters,” Lundin said.

When Pacific Yachting made its challenge, they asked boaters with different size boats to make the run. Harty, Stebbens and Lundin decided to take on the challenge to travel around the island in a 30-foot boat with one fuel stop. Waya, the Cherokee name for wolf, is Stebbens’ personal boat. They added an expedition bladder tank for extra fuel for the trip.

They arrived in Victoria, B.C., on Aug. 21 and had a problem with the motor on their boat. But Sherwood Marine in Victoria was able to help them that night.

They left at 10:18 a.m. on Aug. 22 and traveled up the inside passage.

“Running up the inside of the island was just incredible,” Harty said. “The scenery was so dramatic and it was

just flying by.”

When they rounded the top of the island, their GPS unit failed just as they face the steepest waves of the night. Stebbens was able to rig a back up.

Stebbens, who has made several trips through the open ocean in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and Lundin spent most of the time steering the boat.

“Boating is just an experession of all the skills you learn in lifetime: map reading, interpreting compasses, assessing weather,” Stebbens said.

They were hoping to make the trip with only the fuel they had on board. But they assessed their fuel on the back end of the trip and realized for safety sake they needed to stop in Ucluelet, a small community on the southwestern side of the island.

They only used 494 gallons of fuel and only two gallons from their refueling stop. That’s more than the 267 gallons used by the Aspen crew, but the ArrowCat crew made the trip 20 hours quicker.

They think they’ll take the challenge with a larger boat in the future. And will likely go around the island on another trip to enjoy the travel.

“We don’t know how, but we decided half way around we were going to try it again,” Harty said. “And have more fun.”

Another crew took up the challenge to race around Vancouver Island burning as little fuel as possible.

Rob Harty and Kim Stebbens, who own Everett’s ArrowCat Marine, made the 643-mile voyage in 28 hours, 59 minutes. They were joined by John Lundin, an experienced sailor who owns Bluewater Organic Distilling on the Everett waterfront.

“It was probably a little more extreme than we thought going in,” Harty said.

The trio made the trip Aug. 22-23. The hardest part of the voyage — the part that got their adrenaline going — came when they rounded the top of the island and headed into the wide open ocean.

Their boat — a 30-foot-long ArrowCat 30RS power catamaran called Waya — bounced up and down 6- to 8-foot-tall swells going as fast as 30 mph coming down the waves.

What made it worse was that they got to the area about 10 o’clock at night in pitch dark and headed through a heavy blanket of fog. They turned on a light, but couldn’t see much farther than the front of the boat.

In fact, the light just attracted birds. They relied on radar and GPS. “You kind of have to have faith in your navigation instruments,” Stebbens said.

It’s the second time this summer that a boat manufacturer took the challenge to circumnavigate Vancouver Island. The owners of Aspen Power Catamarans, a Burlington-based company that operated in Snohomish for years, made the first trip in June.

Pacific Yachting Magazine put out a call in April for boaters, boat builders and engine manufacturers to make the run to get people excited about pushing the boundaries of what can be done in a powerboat.

So far, the two boat builders are the only ones to take on the challenge, said Dale Miller, editor of the magazine, in an email.

“Our hope is that now that these two crews have proven that the challenge can be done, others ... will give it some more thought over the winter and plan out a bid for next summer,” Miller wrote.

ArrowCat Marine has been in operation since 2007 and the company is approaching building its 70th boat.

The company is headquartered in Everett, but also has operations in China.

Harty has worked for the company the entire time.

Stebbens, who is retired from Microsoft, had bought a boat from the company in 2009. He liked it so much that he along with Harty bought the company two years later.

Everett needs leadership to reach potential

R

ussell Wilson asked the rhetorical question at the beginning of last year’s championship Seahawk season, “Why not us?”. Winning the Super Bowl wasn’t so obvious at the time but his vision, once shared, became the rally cry for the organization top to bottom.

That same rhetorical question could be applied to Everett today.

Recent private sector speculation in Everett’s downtown gives signs of potential. Two multi-story projects will bring a national brand downtown hotel plus over 300 new market rate apartments, a new public market, and new restaurants sprinkled with some new street level retail all staging in over the next 12 months.

Everett, though, still struggles from some underlying issues if it is to leverage the current activity into more. Due to declining membership, its Chamber of Commerce was morphed into the Economic Alliance of Snohomish County several years ago, bringing it inside a wellled organization but one with broader concerns than just Everett. Its business community remains oddly fragmented and not of one voice as it struggles with a business literacy issue that allows it to grow more and more dependent on Boeing — a dependence that feels good

in good times but leaves it vulnerable in down times.

Toss in this year’s city budget deficits, temporarily cured mostly by new taxes and fees, and Everett presents like a city in need of a business plan but no real place in which to incubate it. Opportunities bounce over it far too often as a result, usually landing in other cities. In the meantime, Boeing keeps pumping paychecks into it, and it feels good.

Business plans for cities shape a revenue picture and identify what the community is for and where it wants to go. They become the core ideas behind a movement to something bigger that everyone can rattle off in coffee shops to board rooms and council meetings. For Everett, that might include a strategy to

It might also talk about Paine Field as a resource to recruit businesses that need access to convenient commercial passenger service. It would talk about its downtown, the mall area, and a medical sector alongside Everett Community College and WSU in its north end. It might talk about the Port and its proposed wharf project. It would be strong enough to survive even in

weaker economies.

But with no real plan or direction tied to a common vision, business, government planning departments, and citizens remain necessarily reactionary, compliant and, at times, deserving of Everett’s go-along-to-get-along reputation.

Everett has the stuff, though, to pull off great things. It’s done it before and recent signs in its downtown are encouraging.

But its existing way of solving problems may no longer serve it so well in a city as big and complex as it is today, especially when it’s going up against other communities who have clear visions and business plans. The transformation of Bothell today is a local example of a community that started years ago with a vision and stuck to it.

Maybe Everett is just missing that dynamic Russell Wilson-like leader to pull it all together and ask the “Why not us?” question. Because until its leaders begin to dream of something more and unite around a vision, the recent activity may be but a blip on an otherwise quiet radar screen. In the absence of such leadership, it’s still a nice ball club ... but far from its potential.

NRLB ruling could be bad news for entrepreneurs

N

otice to current and wannabe entrepreneurs: Big time changes may be coming. And, in the words of a character played by Bette Davis, “Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.”

Davis’ famous line is from a movie called, “All About Eve” and the night’s bumpiness was coming from her guests’ stormy dialogue. For today’s entrepreneurs, the bumpiness is coming from a legal action by the federal government.

The National Labor Relations Board is claiming that McDonald’s, as a franchisor, is a “joint employer” with its franchise owners in localities throughout the United States. This legal view, if upheld in court, would change the economic structure and very nature of franchising.

It is not certain that the courts will see things the NLRB’s way. In earlier court rulings, and even NLRB’s own rules, there are strong precedents for just the opposite view — that franchisors are not joint employers unless they make a distinct effort to be so. Still, it would be unwise to underestimate the skill and, most importantly, the persistence of a government agency like the NLRB to pursue its case.

If the NLRB’s view were to prevail against McDonald’s one significant change is that it would open up the cash drawers of franchisors to litigants — current or former employees of local franchises that have any sort of beef with their local manager.

Currently, those disputes have to be settled locally with the local franchise

owner, who is the legal employer. This usually makes the potential payoff of a lawsuit too small to attract big league attention.

If the courts redefine McDonJames ald’s legal standing McCusker as a franchisor to include being a joint Business employer with its more than 3,000 101 U.S. franchisees, who operate over 11,000 restaurants in the U.S., it will change the foundation of the company and its business strategy. Moreover, it will do the same thing to every one of the franchise-based business in America.

The franchise business situation and the McDonald’s case in particular have been sicklied over by politics, unfortunately, which doesn’t help anything much and is especially unhelpful when trying to forecast the outcome or its side effects.

McDonald’s has long been a target of labor union advocates. Its size and role in creating the fast food business has made it an industry leader, and its active anti-union stance has made it organized labor’s nemesis. Now that labor unions have the dominant voice at the NLRB, McDonald’s provided the opportunity to raise the level of conflict — translation: the Golden Arches were Target No. 1.

In 2007 the Census Bureau reported that over 10 percent of businesses in the U.S. were franchises.

At that time franchises produced $7.7 trillion in total sales and employed 7,900,000 workers, over 13 percent of our country’s total workforce. It is a major part of our economy, and certainly not an economic structure to play around with heedlessly.

All businesses are built around the skills, habits, costs, and availability of their workforces. Franchises, especially food service and other hospitality businesses, have organizational structures built on entry-level workforce members.

Employment in these franchises opened the door to the workforce for millions of people, providing wages and work experience for young people, recent immigrants, and late-entry workers. There are very few career-level or lifetime jobs in these industries, but a remarkable number of today’s top executives in large corporations got their first paychecks from a food service franchise.

All that will change if the NLRB ruling stands. Turning franchisors into joint-employers could create many opportunities for organized labor. But because the idea of entry-level labor being a stepping stone rather than a permanent position is inimical to the seniority concept behind organized labor, there would not be room enough for both in the new franchising structure.

Even if the NLRB ruling doesn’t produce a wave of unionization it will increase the costs for franchisees and for customers. The costs of litigating workplace disputes will be distributed to all franchises and, ultimately, be passed on to those who purchase products or services from them. Translation: Be prepared to pay more for your sandwich or hamburger.

The NLRB ruling might also cause individual franchises to be caught up in the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, with the result that even the smallest franchise operations will have to absorb the costs of medical insurance coverage into the price of your meal or your oil change.

It will take a while for this legal issue to sort itself out but anyone considering going into business as a franchise owner should consider its possibilities when calculating and forecasting margins, capital requirements, and profits. It’s going to make a big difference.

BOTHELL — Foggy Noggin Brewing’s Cease & Desist IPA, formerly known as 12th Man Skittles IPA, was so popular last year that the Bothell-based brewery will now be offering it all season long. BOTHELL — Essentia Water has secured a private placement investment led by Castanea Partners, with participation from First Beverage Ventures, for an undisclosed amount. The investment will support the brand as it expands its distribution network, sales force, brand activation and supply capability to compete in the mainstream marketplace. Essentia is said to be the top selling brand in alkaline water.

EDMONDS — A seasonal retail store, Halloween City, plans to temporarily operate in part of the former Top Foods grocery store on Highway 99 and 220th Street SW in Edmonds. Meanwhile, a longer-term use is being lined up by the California-based company that owns the property, according to the city of Edmonds.

Halloween City is a retail chain that sells costumes and Halloween decorations. Like other seasonal stores, it often operates in temporary locations. The store is expected to open in mid-September and operate through the Halloween season.
