Welcome to Salmon Days A Labor of Love At the beginning of each Summer, I have the same realizations. The first is that I have 10 weeks without rain, so I better get busy kayaking and hiking. The second is that it’s time to start working on Salmon Days. So it makes sense that as I hike, my thoughts are often comprised of the beauty of the mountains I’m hiking through and how lucky I am to live here. Then my mind often drifts to the details it takes to put together an event like Salmon Days. A good hike often helps find the answer to that special festival planning question. But as the Summer goes on, and Salmon Days really starts taking shape, it transitions into a labor of love. It still continues to consume my thoughts, but it’s with a touch of adrenaline and building excitement. I know many of our volunteers, and certainly the Salmon Days staff, know exactly what I’m
talking about. When people ask me why I continue to devote so much time to the festival, my first response is to laugh and say it’s because I don’t know how to say no. My serious answer however is because Salmon Days is a pillar of our community. I’ve dedicated a good portion of my adult life to public service and volunteering in Issaquah. Some of my best memories and friendships are those I’ve made through my experiences with Salmon Days. I think like all of us, the staff, festival committee and the volunteers who work tirelessly to make Salmon Days better each year, do it because we love our little town of Issaquah. We do it because we believe in the good Salmon Days does for the town. We do it because of the enjoyment and memories the festival brings to so many families. We do it because we
always find ways to make it just a little bit better. And those reasons are enough to keep me coming back. One day, long after I’ve turned in my storage unit keys, I’m sure I’ll be hiking when I first realize that a Summer has gone by without planning for Salmon Days. Those in that moment, I expect I’ll have a tear in my eye as I smile. With great excitement, hard work, long hours, stress and laughter,
The Mercantile Building
we have put together another great Salmon Days for you this year. Please bring your friends, neighbors, co-workers and families. We’ve been preparing for them all.

You call this a hospital?
Photo: Benjamin Benschneider/OTTO
No. As a matter of fact, we call it a community center that’s dedicated to health. We call it a shopping mall for gifts that bring some much-needed cheer. We call it a school where you can learn about what ails you and how to avoid it in the first place. We call it a peaceful place for healing where the best minds in medicine come together as one. We call it a no-wait emergency room, a family-friendly primary-care clinic, an advanced lab and diagnostic imaging center, and a home to dozens of expert specialists. We call this place Swedish Issaquah. We think you’ll call it extraordinary.

Celebrating Green Salmon Days celebrates a miracle of nature, the annual return of the salmon, and the festival does what it can to protect our favorite fishy friends. What we do in our community, with our habits and activities, is pivotal to the environment, which is pivotal to the survival and return of the salmon.
Bringing together so many people at one event creates the need for mammoth efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. ‘Green’ has been a part of this celebration for a long time, and as technology and materials made it possible - the efforts have increased. Partnering with amazing volunteers,
the City’s Office of Sustainability and Recology CleanScapes helps us be as effective as possible toward this common goal. Food vendors using compostable products, shuttles and generators operating on biodiesel fuel and patrons recycling…all of these endeavors aid
the determination to divert waste being taken to landfill sites. So, grab a tasty treat, enjoy some delicious food and help us “re-spawnsibly” celebrate the return of the salmon to our lakes, streams and downtown hatchery.
Sister City Visitors to Morocco remember the bright exotic colors, intricate designs and the warm citizenry. Through our Sister City Chefchaouen, Morocco, Issaquah has developed rich relationships and learned a great appreciation for their culture. The two communities have exchanged daughters, artists and political representatives. As a testament to this connection, outside Issaquah’s City Hall stands the ‘Blue Door,’ a gift from Chefchaouen and a symbol of the friendship. In 2013, Salmon Days was host to two Moroccan high school girls and two talented artists. This spring an Issaquah delegation of ten reciprocated and attended Chefchaouen’s largest festival, Alegria. The group was comprised of two Issaquah students, a representative from American Moroccan International Exchange, Sister City Commissioners, and community supporters. For the first time, Issaquah is excited
to host three talented artists exhibiting their special skills. Artists will be carving plaster and wood, and painting, sharing part of their culture with local children and Salmon Days Festival attendees. Be sure to stop by their booth on E. Sunset Way, view their handiwork and welcome them to Issaquah.

Salmon Safe:
A designation to splash about
When one of our spawnsors, Draper Valley Farms, came on board last year, they told us all about how their chicken was “Salmon Safe.” We thought it was cute but a self imposed title, that is, until we did a little research and it’s actually a really big deal. Salmon-Safe Puget Sound is an eco-label that certifies farms, vineyards, golf courses, and residential and urban developments based on their environmental practices and commitment to the health of salmon. Established in Oregon in 1996, Salmon Safe has been working with farmers

throughout the Northwest to promote conservation practices and habitat restoration. To date, over 80,000 acres of farmland and over 300 farms have been Salmon-Safe certified including producers of dairy, eggs, wine, fruit, vegetables and meat. Through a partnership with SalmonSafe, Stewardship Partners brought the eco-label to Washington in 2004, starting in the Snoqualmie Valley just a few minutes northeast of Issaquah. Salmon-Safe unifies the landowners of our gorgeous watershed in their commitment to sustainable practices and caring for native salmon. Giving consumers the opportunity to protect native Salmon habitat through their lifestyle choices empowers them as decision-makers. Whether it is the wine they are drinking, the produce that they buy, or the golf courses they play on, Salmon-Safe provides the recognition of support for local businesses that are committed to keeping the Northwest a beautiful place that salmon can return to.

Celebrating 45 Groovy Years! • In 1970, the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce presented the first Salmon Days Festival.
• The event grew out of the desire to replace the once popular Labor Day celebration, as well as a need to celebrate one of Issaquah’s greatest treasures – the annual return of the salmon. • In the beginning, festival attractions included the Kiwanis Salmon BBQ, salmon hatchery displays, an art show, children’s parade led by the late J.P. Patches, Little League football games at Veterans’ Memorial Field, fire crew competitions and more. • In 1980, the Salmon Days Festival and Grande Parade underwent two major changes that have been credited with altering the course of the festival: Salmon Days became a Seafair-sanctioned event and a festival float was created again. • To aid in the growth process, merchandise was introduced, the first paid festival director
was hired and large ohfishal spawnsors came onboard in the ‘80s.
• In 1990, the festival introduced the Salmon Days Limited Edition Print, a signed and numbered run of 450 prints featuring original artwork. The festival retired the collection at the end of 2003 and the majority of the past prints have sold out. Today, Salmon Days is still presented by the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce with the goal of providing a community celebration focused on honoring the miraculous return of the salmon. The Kiwanis are still barbecuing salmon, almost two tons each year. The Grande Parade features more than 100 entries annually. Veterans’ Memorial Field is transformed into the Field of Fun and hosts free games and activities for families to enjoy. What began as an art show has manifested itself into a marketplace of more than 270 on-site artists selling their handcrafted pieces to an audience of more than 180,000. Come join us and make your own festival tradition.

The “Other” 363 Days in Issaquah Every year, Salmon Days brings an estimated 180,000 people to enjoy our city for two days each October. While it is true that Salmon Days puts us on the map each fall, it’s what happens the rest of the year that makes Issaquah such a great place to visit. There’s something to do for everyone. That probably sounds cliché but come back after Salmon Days and let us prove it to you. Looking for something to do as a family? The Cougar Mt. Zoo sits elevated on Cougar Mt. providing unobstructed views of Lake Sammamish. Get up close and personal with cougars and tigers and much more. Issaquah boasts dozens of great parks featuring playgrounds, picnic shelters, walking trails and BBQ pits. The brand new IMAX Regal Movie Theater in the Issaquah Highlands is completely state of the art and the best movie going experience around. For those of you who want a night out, Issaquah has several great options for wine tasting, live music, comedy, outdoor concerts and restaurants to meet every budget and palate. Art enthusiasts can just take a stroll down Front Street and visit all of the boutique stores featuring works from local artists. Each August, you can enjoy the Issaquah Art Walk on Friday
nights on Front Street. The Village Theater produces award winning plays in a spectacular venue. Reality TV making you feel dumber? Educate yourself with a trip to the Issaquah History Museum, Train Depot or library. All have great information and a great way to kill a few hours with or without the kids. We’re seeing a rebirth in the hiking craze. As soon as we get trail maps printed at the Visitor Information Center, they’re off the shelves and into the hands of eager people wanting to explore our three mountains, Squak, Cougar and Tiger. Still haven’t caught the hiking bug? Lake Sammamish is a great place to fish, waterski and swim. Issaquah is proud of its shopping collection. Gilman Village is a wonderful assortment of boutique stores offering everything from antiques to clothing and everything in between. We also have the things you would only expect in a much larger town. Costco, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, Sports Authority, Dicks Sporting Goods, Fred Meyer, Target, Trader Joes, QFC and two Safeways are all within our city limits. So put us to the test, head on over with or without plans and see what there is to do in Issaquah the other 363 days of the year.

Field of Fun
One of the highlights of the festival for any kid is always the Field of Fun. It’s our chance to pack as much fun into one area as we can, and we’re getting good.
Trampolines
Kids’ Stage
Trampolines with springs? No thanks! They’re dangerous, wear out and score a 5 out of 10 on the fun scale. Luckily, Springfree Trampolines is returning with their state-of-theart trampolines that have no springs, providing for a safer and higher bounce.
Ongoing acts throughout the day, including Ronald McDonald will entertain children with singing, dancing, juggling, magic and more. Thank you to Fred Meyer and McDonalds for their support.
Human Hamster Balls
Fish Prints
Always a festival hit, the Human Hamster Balls are an experience no child should go without. Banic Chiropractic is the hero of this event for continuing to spawnsor it so we can keep bringing them back.
Arena Sports Soccer Experience The Arena Sports soccer field is the perfect place to practice drills, meet friends and get pointers and tips from the experts.
Puget Sound DockDogs
Toy Maker’s Workshop
Children have been making Fish Prints at Salmon Days for years and some have created quite the collection. Come up to the steps of the Issaquah Police Department to continue the tradition or start a new one. Seattle Children’s Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center continues to bring this great tradition where you can show your creativity with paint and fish!
SAMBICA Inflatable Zone
One of our oldest traditions is back again thanks to Sunrise Dental and their team. For years, kids have been building handmade toys with the help of our lead toy maker and volunteers. Come and see what this year’s creation will be!
Bring the whole family to watch as man’s best friend splashes into the pool in one of three competitions: Big Air (long jump), Extreme Vertical (high jump), and Speed Retrieve (fastest dog to the end of the pool). Always a great time, come join the excitement with the whole family! Depending on the weather, you may or may not want to stand in the Splash Zone. This event is once again Ohfishally Spawnsored by Alpine Animal Hospital and Cascade Water Alliance.
Mini Train Rides
Bigger than life inflatables that you can jump, climb, slide and joust on take up a large area of the Field of Fun. Children of all ages can enjoy bouncing good times in these fun inflatables provided by SAMBICA.
Did somebody say Mini Trains? Count us in! Scaled down for the young ones, kids will have a blast on this ride! The line can get long so grab some food before heading over. Proudly sponsored by Pediatric Associates, Inc.

Preserving Wealth With Solid Strategy and Personal Concern Lawrence Investment Group of Wells Fargo Advisors
A
s anyone who has done it can attest, building wealth takes business know-how, hard work and a healthy measure of monetary savvy. Preserving that wealth – and perhaps adding to it – takes a financial professional who is completely dedicated to the task. It’s better still if that financial professional is completely dedicated to the client as well. The Lawrence Investment Group of Wells Fargo is dedicated to both. The Lawrence Investment Group is accomplished in all areas of investment planning, portfolio management and execution. Clients enjoy the benefits of a universe of tools working on their behalf – exchange-traded funds, tax-reduction strategies, smart diversification across a dozen asset classes and others. “We often see people not using key investment tools readily available to them,” says Susan H. Lawrence, CIMA ®. “We do.” The practice’s clients, she says, are people who created their wealth through accomplishment in their fields. “Now they need to work with the highestcaliber wealth advisors.” Low-Risk, Tax-Efficient Is Important Speaking generally, the Lawrence Investment Group portfolios are designed around sound strategies that seek tax efficiency and low risk, tailored to clients’ specific needs. Lawrence, who has been in the financial services business since 1987, is straightforward with her clients. As with
greater potential of investment success.” The goal is not really to outpace the S&P, she says. “The goal is: Don’t lose money. Match inflation, so you’re not going backwards. Make some money on top of that.”

Avoid Critical Mistakes
A critical mistake is not switching from saver to spender in both mind-set and investment strategy. Once you are taking income, focus on “sequence of returns.” Your portfolio is sustained by consistent positive returns, even if they’re moderate or inconsistently high. Two negative or four flat years at the beginning of retirement cut a portfolio’s lifespan and halve your income, so you run out of money twice as fast. Managing for this, as we do, is essential to success. A second critical mistake is not knowing if you are on track, the impact of changes to your plan, or whether your investments’ value is where it needs to be. Lawrence Investment Group clients have personal benchmarks they can view daily. Friends and family can forgive you when you make a mistake, but your money does not. We get to know our clients well so we can model the impact of unplanned withdrawals, poor economic periods or other factors.
any sound investment strategy, it takes time to see the value of investment planning. She communicates this to clients so expectations are not overstated. “We focus on taking less risk and believe our portfolios offer more tax-efficient returns than our competitors’, so in the end, we believe our clients have a
Personal Connection The Lawrence Investment Group gets to know prospective clients through a “fit meeting” and a checklist that helps sharpen the picture – are you married? Do you have adult children? What if a loved one needs your financial help? The advisors aren’t afraid to ask the difficult questions, and to help clients with the difficult answers. “We ask these detailed questions that others aren’t asking,” says Lawrence. “We help our clients avoid ugly surprises.” The depth of connection is the fine line between dedication to the task of money management and the Lawrence Investment Group’s dedication to the client. “Susan is genuinely concerned for people and thinks about her clients’ situations all the time,” says Financial Consultant Christopher Loutsis. Issues long put off needing prompt attention are discovered such as: power of attorney, estate planning or tax-efficient distribution planning. Once discovered, the advisors lead the way and bring in the expertise of clients’ other professional advisors (e.g., attorney, CPA) and see things through to completion. Lawrence articulates the bottom line: “I help people not run out of money.”

What’s New? Salmon Days Carnival
Say what? Yes, you read that right, a carnival, with little rides and big rides, and a ferris wheel is joining the festivities at Salmon Days! The rides will be setup in the Staples parking lot, a short walk from the festival. We’ve planned to bring you attractions to suit the entire family and that’s exactly what we’ve done. The carnival will run on Friday from 2 p.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. The shuttles only run until 7 p.m. so if you’re planning on attending the carnival after hours, please arrange for other transportation and parking.
Laser Tag
Start training…. NOW! This isn’t your store bought laser tag set-up. We’re bringing in the best in the business. These are professional laser tag guns that work outdoors and have incredible range! We’ve set up a competitive arena with tanks and boulders to shield you from the opposing team. We’ll be running various games throughout the day, including situations from the popular online, multiplayer XBox game, CoD: Modern Warfare 3 such as Team Death Match and Capture the Flag.
The Plastic Whale Project
Head on over to City Hall to see something pretty unique, a 32-foot long gray whale made of 9,000 plastic bags and other plastic trash. It was created by 900 youth and adults in Thurston County as part of an education and outreach project about plastic bags.
Interesting note: The plastic bag ban in Issaquah does not apply if you’re a giant whale.
