to the 2014 OHHS Fall Athletic Season!

A

s we get back into the swing of things for the new school year I wanted to start off by letting everyone in the community know how much we appreciate the support we have received for all of our athletic teams in the past year. I wanted to follow up on how the levy funds are being used to help our athletic programs at Oak Harbor High School.

Last year we were able to bring back the JV golf program and provide a full assistant coach’s stipend. By reinstating the JV team, we now have the opportunity to develop young or novice players for varsity competition. With more female athletes participating in wrestling, we noticed the need for an additional coach to work with these students. During the postseason, the male and female wrestlers compete at different sites to qualify for state competition. This often meant that we were short on coaches, and we wanted to make sure all of our wrestlers had the guidance and supervision needed throughout the season.

NICKI LUPER Adding a stipend for this position has helped to make this possible. Over the past two years our participation ATHLETIC DIRECTOR numbers for track and field have been over 150 students each year. To ensure that students were receiving the coaching and supervision they needed, an additional coaching stipend was added to track and field to work with sprinters and relays. In addition, the coaches were also able to divide up the managerial and supervision duties for practices and meets.

Along with adding coaches, the levy funds gave us the opportunity to help with transportation expenses for teams to participate in tournaments and invitational events that are out of our geographical area. The last area we were able to reinstate were the cuts made to all of our team’s equipment/uniform budgets. These funds allow coaches to purchase equipment and uniforms as needed for the student athletes. Individually, these items may not seem like a lot, but all together they make a significant contribution to providing quality programs for students.

Hold assemblies before a contest to encourage students’ proper conduct.

Intervene to let others know that ethnic, disability or sexist jokes, racial or religious slurs, taunting, trash talk and intimidating behavior will NOT be tolerated.

Judgment calls by officials are not subject to question or discussion.

Know, understand, and appreciate the rules of the contest.

Lose without excuses; win without boasting.

Model language and behavior that is unbiased and inclusive of individuals regardless of ethnicity, race, religion, sex or disability.

Never criticize players or coaches for the loss of a game.

Opposing coaches, participants, cheerleaders and fans must be respected at all times.

Provide opportunities to remind student and adult spectators to uphold standards of sportsmanship.

Questioning an official’s call or making negative comments is unacceptable behavior.

Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play.

Shake hands with opponents prior to the contest and wish them good luck.

Teach sportsmanship and demand players be good sports.

Use cheerleaders, pep groups and other student leaders to develop sportsmanship programs.

Victory celebrations should not disrespect the losing team.

Work cooperatively with officials. eXercise self-control and be good example for players and fans.

Yelling, booing or heckling an official’s decision is unacceptable.

Zero in on sportsmanship as a priority.
