BELLINGHAM — Jenise Wright was laid to rest by family and friends on Aug. 30 at Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale. The morning started with a Catholic funeral Mass at the Nooksack Tribe Community Building in Everson; Jenise was a Nooksack Tribal member. Jenise’s white casket was draped in a purple Native American blanket. The casket was opened for viewing during a Rosary Service on Aug. 29, but there was no viewing the following morning. The Rev. Emilio Gonzalez of St. Peter Catholic Church offici-

ated. During Mass, there were readings from the the Book of Wisdom and the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans. Father Gonzalez also read from the Holy Gospel According to Matthew and Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The familiar Beatitudes say: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in

heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Once at the cemetery, Gonzalez said he would be brief as Jenise had waited long enough. The assembled crowd spoke together the Lord’s Prayer and the Hail Mary. Gonzalez sprinkled the casket with

holy water and whispered a final blessing to Jenise. As Jenise’s body was lowered into its final resting place, Jenise’s mother, Denise, sobbed and moaned. The assembled crowd soon followed suit and collectively wept. Jenise’s father, James, clutched his young son and tried to comfort him. Once the casket was in place, family members and friends placed handfuls of dirt and flowers into the grave before returning to the community building for lunch. The man that was stabbed to death on Sunday in East Bremerton has been identified by Kitsap County Coroner Greg Sandstrom as 54-year-old Alan J. Charpentier. Sandstom said an autopsy conducted Tuesday afternoon determined that Charpentier died from multiple stab wounds to his chest. Sgt. Ken Dickinson of the Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office said Charpentier’s wife, 55, was still being treated on Tuesday for burns and smoke inhalation at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She has not been identified, but sheriff ’s detectives say she is responsible for her husband’s murder. Deputies from the Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office went to the couple’s home in the 8500 block of Covina Loop NE at 11:41 a.m. Sunday in response to a reported stabbing. A neighbor called to report that the victim had been stabbed and stumbled across the road to their residence for help. The neighbor performed first aid while waiting for medics and law enforcement to arrive. Deputies arrived six minutes after the call and found the victim being treated on the front porch of the neighbor’s residence. Medics arrived two minutes later and transported the victim to Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale in preparation for airlift to Harborview. However, the victim died at the hospital, Dickinson said. While at the scene, smoke was observed coming from the residence where the assault had occurred. Firefighters from SEE STABBING, A9

Tranist seeking feedback on ferries

Kitsap Transit launched the second of two online community surveys to help guide development of its business plan and long-range strategy for passenger-only ferry service between Kitsap County and downtown Seattle. Results from the June survey show two-thirds of the 1,300 survey respondents ride the ferries one to five or more days a week, and many agreed that a 35-minute trip on a passenger-only ferry service is important for access to jobs. “After looking at terminal and vessel infrastructure needs, our next step is to look at the best way to fund and prioritize routes and schedules for passenger-only ferry service,” said Kitsap Transit Executive Director John Clauson. “We had a great response to the first survey and are looking forward to more input from the community this round.” Transit began pursuing options for environmentally responsible passenger-only ferry service in 2003 when Washington State Ferries discontinued the BremertonSeattle passenger ferry due to funding cuts and concern about beach impacts caused by vessel wakes. In 2012, Transit’s low-wake study demonstrated that a low-wake ferry can be operated in Rich Passage without a negative effect on the beaches. Kitsap Transit will evaluate three connections to Seattle from Bremerton, Kingston, and Southworth. The final business plan and recommendations will be presented to the Kitsap Transit Board of Commissioners this fall. Kitsap’s reputation as a leader in accessible voting is a direct result of its commitment to collaborating with the Voter Access Advisory Committee. Local rescue mission gets $9,000 from United Way At the August 21 United Way board of directors meeting, a check for $9,000 was handed over to Kitsap Rescue Mission Executive Director Walt Le Couteur. The money came from the proceeds of the first annual United Way Golf Classic held in June at Gold Mountain Golf Course. “When we decided to organize a golf tournament we decided to benefit local non-profits with the proceeds from the tournament,” said United Way Executive Director Dave Foote. “This is another way of providing funding to worthy programs.” The next beneficiary of the Golf Classic hasn’t been selected yet, but the date for the next tournament is July 17, 2015 at Gold Mountain. “We have some new and innovative golf incentives for next year,” said Rich Peterson, President and Golf Classic Chair for United Way. “This tournament

Education reform is needed

According to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, not a single school in the Bremerton or Central Kitsap school districts met Adequate Yearly Progress goals in reading and math proficiency. As required by No Child Left Behind, or NCLB, Washington state has developed a system to measure whether schools, school districts and the state as a whole have made Adequate Yearly Progress in reading and mathematics achievement. The system is designed to ensure that all public school students in grades 3-8 and 10 are assessed; all student groups reach the state’s proficiency level by 2013-14; and schools and districts that do not meet the state’s adequate yearly progress requirements are identified as needing improvement. Some educators in other districts say there is some confusion about what “failing” letters mean for their child’s school and for their child. That confusion subsides when parents look a little closer: If 100 percent of students don’t meet state-drafted standards, the entire school flunks, triggering the failure letters and other steps. Now, consider the fact that Bremerton High School (High Progress), Central Kitsap High School (High Progress), Klahowya Secondary (High Progress), Central Kitsap Junior High School (Special Recognition — Math Growth) and Ridgetop Junior High (High Progress) all earned OSPI Washington Achievement Awards this year. Here’s the hitch: Earlier this year, Washington became the first state in the nation to have its conditional waiver of No Child Left Behind denied. The problem was that Olympia wouldn’t tie teacher evaluations to student testing. It’s more nuanced than a teachers’ union uprising against a culture of standardized testing. The required use of poorly vetted tests to measure student achievement and linking those results to teacher performance is unworkable over the short term, however much it creates the illusion of accountability. “There is widespread acknowledgment that NCLB isn’t working,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn said at the time. “Congress has failed to change the law at the federal level, so states are forced to come up with workarounds.” Because of the waiver denial, $40 million the state receives from the feds will be freighted with restrictions. The Everett School District, for example, will be forced to set aside 20 percent of its Title I budget to bus students in failing schools to non-failing ones and to provide private tutors for struggling students. Money falls away as disadvantaged children get slammed the hardest. There’s a simple, two-part remedy: On the state level, fully fund education as the McCleary decision requires. And on the federal level, change NCLB.

Schools have some changes this year This is the first week of September and it is back to school time. Kids are groaning over the loss of those summer freedoms that are so enjoyed. Parents are happy to have kids back in a predictable routine of learning and educational engagement that lacks a controller type device attached to a gaming system. While the student population was relaxing and enjoying their summer break, the Bremerton School District kicked into high gear to complete some of the facility improvement projects that are part of the approved August 2012 Capital Improvement Levy. One of the most notable projects is the completion of the new roof for Bremerton High School. Sold to the community as a growing emergency during the campaign leading up to the passage of the capital improvement levy, this project unfortunately got shuffled down the priority list during the time the district waited for the collection of the tax funds to come in and grow to the sum needed to begin construction. A change in leadership at the district level in 2013 soon revealed just how much the roof needed to regain its priority status in regards to

the comfort and safety of the high-school students and to the promises made to the community about the spending of the levy funds. This project was then moved back to the top of the list and this summer the

Colleen Smidt new roof was completed. To complete the roof project this year, the major West Hills STEM expansion was delayed. However, students at the STEM school are not without improvements this year. The seventh- and eighth-grade students will now be housed in the annex building on the back side of the property. In a previous life, this was a small fire station that the district already had in their inventory and was being used to house the Montessori program prior to this year. Considerable

upgrades in technology features and access were also completed during the summer break so that students will have full access to their science, technology, engineering and math needs. The bus lane at West Hills has also been relocated to Preble Street, on the south side of the property. Previously located off of National Avenue, the number of buses needed to service the growing student population of West Hills had outgrown the existing space which had always been on the small side to begin with. Buses had to compete for space and access with parent pickups and drop-offs as well as the typical commuter traffic on National. The buses will have a much easier time servicing students this year with the new bus lane located on a side street. Good things are continuing to happen with the Bremerton School District. I am excited for my own student as he begins this year and the educational opportunities that are available to him and all of his friends. Welcome back to school. It’s not likely taxpayers will get their money back. In one case, the judge sentenced 60-year old James Maher, a former railroad conductor, to perform 300 hours of community service and repay $347,481 in fraudulently obtained benefits. Maher negotiated a repayment rate of $400 a month, giving him more

than 72 years to pay back what he stole. We’ll get our money back if Maher lives to be 132. What’s worse, the system that allowed this massive fraud remains in effect. In February, the inspector general for the United States Railroad Retirement Board reported that 96 percent of those seeking disability payments from the Long Island Rail Road are approved – roughly the same rate as before the scandal. The I.G. noted that even after the Retirement Board instituted “reforms,” the Board upheld the dubious disability claims of seven retirees who later pleaded guilty to disability fraud. But even this billiondollar fraud scheme pales in comparison to Medicare and Medicaid fraud.

Government officials estimate that criminals steal $100 billion each year from Medicare and Medicaid. In February, one woman in Washington, D. C. was arrested for filing $75 million in fraudulent claims. Investigators say that, in some circles, defrauding entitlement programs has replaced drug dealing as the crime of choice. Until federal officials intensify their efforts to find and prosecute fraud — and until judges impose tougher sentences on these criminals — we can expect more of the same. Nixon’s resignation with the aid of 600 secretly recorded conversations that had previously only been listened to by those at the National Archives. Dean got them transcribed for “The Nixon Defense: What He Knew and When He Knew It,” arguably the most complete narrative. It tells how a smart, savvy man with a proven history of political resilience let a bungled burglary destroy his presidency. “People in Washington (D.C.) throw Watergate around and really don’t have a clue about it,” Dean said in a phone interview. He was the White House lawyer whose Senate testimony helped force out

Nixon. “This will tell them. It fills the gaps. To me, there is no unanswered question about Watergate.” For some there is still one gap — who’s responsible for erasing 18-1/2 minutes of conversation between Nixon and H.R. “Bob” Haldeman three days after the break-in. Dean offers a short list of suspects. But at this point it doesn’t seem necessary because the subject matter is crystal clear, given all the conversations those two would have in the ensuing months. “I have concluded that, in the end, while there is no absolute proof about who did it, there really is no mystery at all about what was erased,” Dean writes in the book. “And then who did it is not as important as what was erased.” Dean’s hands aren’t clean, and in May 1973 he informed Nixon of

Georgia’s House is in need of volunteers who are willing to enforce some house rules. Like a 10 p.m. curfew. The house is a shelter for homeless women and children looking for a safe place to live. The only caveat is they must obey the straight-forward, but strict house rules. Residents have three

months to try and get their lives back in order by working with volunteers — including case workers — to set goals and move on to more secured housing. For some, like resident Jasmine Boatwright, 25, it is just the push needed to get back into the groove of things once again. Boatwright came to live in the shelter after being evicted from her place back in July.

She had nowhere to go and decided to head to Georgia’s House where she had spent time last year. “The staff is really nice as long as you do what you’re supposed to do,” she said. Depression has often clouded Boatwright’s thinking, she said, but she’s found comfort in talking to staff and the volunteer case workers. “With the staff here, I feel comfortable. They are lovely,

lovely ladies,” she said. “I love Georgia’s House. It’s always the first shelter I contact.” While the shelter is a safe place for residents to lay their heads, guests must be buzzed in, it is also a facility that needs a little TLC itself. Donations, volunteers and grants are the only ways Georgia’s House stays afloat. Recently, when the oven broke, funds had to be taken out to buy a new one. There was no waiting for one when 12 mouths are waiting to be fed, said Carol Branscum, Georgia’s House administrative assistant. The shelter also only has one washer and dryer close to giving out, another need added to the laundry list of items the women need to live if not comfortably, at least reasonably. It’s Branscum’s hope that someone may donate two stackable washer and dryers to allow more loads to be washed at once. And with nasty weather soon rolling in over the peninsula, Branscum expects that all 24 beds at the shelter will quickly fill. “People aren’t aware that there are large tent cities with homeless people,” she said. With those extra bodies in the building, there’s also a need for supervision around

the clock. Only two staff members are paid, and they often work upward of 12 hours as they fill in shifts that volunteers have abandoned or haven’t filled. “We are down volunteers right now,” said Branscum. “We have more people over the summer.” Many of the nonprofit’s volunteers are college students filling in to get community service hours, she said. Now, those students are back in school, and the slots that once were filled are empty. The shifts where volunteers are most needed now include overnight shifts and Saturdays and Sundays. Volunteers help out with a variety of tasks during a five-hour shift, including offering a listening ear. It isn’t uncommon for domestic violence victims to find solace between the walls of Georgia’s House, named after Georgia Mattson, a local who loved helping the homeless, Branscum said. The hardest position to fill is overnight shifts, which go from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m., Branscum said. Most nights, volunteers will spend their time sleeping. But sometimes, women wake up in the middle of the night from a bad dream, often from scary memories of a recent domestic violence

incident. “These girls need somebody they can rely on,” said Branscum. “Sometimes all you do is sleep; sometimes all you do is listen. That’s a big part of being here. You have to listen. You can’t judge.” The ultimate goal and hope is to give women the resources they need to find stability in life. Between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the women are required to be out of the shelter applying for jobs and looking into the services they talked about with their case worker. Each week, goals are logged onto a sheet of paper. Doing so gives the women control and power over their lives. As for a reason to volunteer, Georgia’s House Executive Director Leann Weaver said there’s an easy answer: to give back by helping women find their ground. “The incentive to give back is to empower women,” said Weaver. “We try to empower them so they are the most powerful women on God’s earth. Police say Mallory told them he was driving southbound on the alley between Wycoff and Highway 204, north of First Street, when his brakes failed. “Mallory stated that as he got closer to First Street the brakes were not working for the car and he could not come

to a stop,” a police report states. “Mallory said he went across First Street and stated the steering for the vehicle was also messing up and he lost control and drove into the tree.” Officers say Mallory’s eyes were bloodshot and watery and his breath smelled of alcohol. They also say he failed a series of field sobriety tests and was unable to provide a portable breath test sample despite five attempts before refusing to blow. Mallory was arrested and transported to the Bremerton Police Department for DUI processing. Police say Mallory would not sign consent forms or submit to a blood alcohol test. He was transported to the jail in Port Orchard and booked for felony DUI.

Bremerton police arrested a Port Orchard man for felony driving under the influence following a single-vehicle crash just before 2 a.m. on Sept. 1 at the corner of First Street and Wycoff Avenue. Travis Michael Mallory, 37, of the 4700 block of Rutherford Circle SW in Port Orchard, who police say has a prior conviction for vehicular manslaughter out of California, was later charged in Kitsap County Superior Court with felony DUI. For one local business owner, a trade that once started out in a closet has finally expanded to larger quarters with more opportunities. Lorilee Morsette, owner of Chandelier, a downtown Bremerton bead shop, opened her very first store June 9. For years she sold items at farmers markets. Now, the mother, college student and entrepreneur has a place to call her own. “It’s nice to be inside and not be in the rain and wind,” she joked. “I’ve gone through so many canopies. It’s a landing space and everything has a place.” Morsette has thousands of beads and trinkets — large and small — for customers to peruse in her two-room shop. Small glass bowls and trays showcase a rainbow of beads for the choosing. From butterfly pendants to letter blocks, the offerings yield thousands of options for designers. “She hoards it. She has a stash of stuff,” her husband, James Pavlock, said. Pavlock noted that all the beads now on display once were in a closet that also doubled as his wife’s workspace. “I’m excited for her. We never thought it would happen,” he said. Located on Pacific

Avenue, the business is for those who are looking for custom-made jewelry or who want to create their own. The front of the store offers a variety of beads that can be taken into the back studio for those looking to be creative. On average, customers spend between $12 and $15 to create their own jewelry, depending on the beads chosen, Morsette said. “It’s really easy to get carried away,” she said, noting that some sterling silver beads are priced by weight. Morsette is also happy to help in designing as she has seven years of experience from her work at the now defunct Bead Garden in Silverdale. She recalls knowing nothing about making jewelry, and when her boss called in sick to let Morsette know she’d be teaching a class, she panicked. Thirty minutes before the class started, Morsette sat on the phone with her boss, twirling wire and beads in her hands. By the end of the phone call, she had learned how to make earrings and was ready to teach the class. She’s come a long way since then, and now loves teaching, she said. Starting in September, she’ll offer basic, intermediate and advanced courses on jewelry making. Her studio room can also be rented for birth-

around, softly touching walls and furniture to ensure she doesn’t displace herself. “It’s kind of like walking in your house in the dark at night,” she said of walking around as a blind person. “You go until you hit something.” Despite her nickname “Crash” given bestowed upon her by her father, Beckett won’t let anyone feel sorry for her. In fact, the massage therapist calls her life “blessed” due to her support system of friends and family. “I think I’m just a happy person. It could have been so much worse,” she said. “I can pretty much do everything a normal person can do.” Hansen believes Beckett when she says she can do most things just as seeing people do. “I don’t think Kelly operates any differently than any other therapist,”

said Hansen. “She is great, I am always amazed at how she knows the time. She used to have a talking watch — that was a long time ago. Now, she just knows how long an hour is.” Her clients have called her “inspirational” but Beckett notes she is just doing what she needs to do. Some, she said, don’t even know she is blind at first. Danaher thinks that Beckett sometimes forgets herself, too. “Sometimes I am not sure that Kelly realizes she is blind. She is not only very good at what she does, she is a good businesswoman. She keeps her own books, sends her appointments out via the computer, handles all of the phone calls, cleans her business site, and stays up to date with the changes and advancements of her business,” he said. “She is always upbeat, daily positive, and has a great sense of humor. She moves around in life so easily that, if you did not know beforehand Kelly was blind, you would be fooled.” For Beckett, it is all just a part of the life she’s learned to live since going blind. “I like when my clients come in; it’s like seeing a friend every week,” she said. “”Massage therapy has been very good to me. County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Garrido took the opportunity at the groundbreaking for The Trails at Silverdale to remind everyone that some people thought the county was only dreaming when it put in the infrastructure at Kitsap Mall Boulevard and Greaves Way. “Some people thought we were being too futuristic,” Garrido said. “But because we were looking to the future, today we are celebrating the results.” The Trails at Silverdale, a 220,000-square-foot retail development, is being built at that location and an official groundbreaking took place at noon on Aug. 28. “We persevered,” Garrido said. “And today the changes we dreamt of are taking place.” Garrido and fellow commissioners Linda Streissguth and Bob Gelder were on hand. Jean Paul Wardy, president of CenterCal, the corporation developing the retail center, spoke about how great it is to do business in Kitsap. “Everyone here has been

Accused killer makes brief court appearance BY KEVAN MOORE KMOORE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Gabriel Gaeta, the 17-year-old accused of raping and killing Jenise Wright, 6, made a brief appearance in Kitsap County Superior Court on Aug. 28. Prosecutors said Gaeta would receive a Sept. 3 competency evaluation at Western State Hospital. Gaeta will be back in court Sept. 12 for possible arraignment. The status hearing lasted just a few minutes after Gaeta — in an orange jumpsuit, shackles and a black shirt draped over his head and face — was ushered in by sheriff ’s office deputies. Prior to his first court appearance on Aug/ 11, a judge ordered that no photographs be taken of Gaeta’s face inside the courtroom. While escorting him to and from court in shackles, deputies concealed his face with the shirt and removed it once he gets to the defense table inside courtroom 271. Gaeta did not speak at the latest court appearance. He is being held on $1 million bail and potentially faces life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder with aggravating

circumstances. County Prosecutor Russ Hauge has said the death penalty is off the table because of Gaeta’s age. The aggravating circumstances in the case, meanwhile, involve Jenise’s young age and vulnerability. Jenise was first reported missing Aug. 4. Gaeta, a neighbor of the Wright family in the Steele Creek Mobile Home Park, was arrested Aug. 9 after investigators said they found DNA evidence linking him to the crime. On Aug. 4, the day after Jenise was reported missing, searchers found a pair of girl’s underwear and shorts, court documents say. A preliminary test showed the presence of blood and a further examination by the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab revealed the presence of semen. A blood type profile indicated the blood belonged to a female biological child of James and Denise Wright, Jenise’s parents. Five days later, with a DNA sample of Gaeta’s to compare, the state crime lab issued a report to investigators. “The male DNA typing profile (Individual B) previously obtained from the front of the underpants

[bloody underpants located near the body] matches the DNA typing profile of Gabriel Gaeta,” the crime lab report states. “The estimated probability of selecting an unrelated individual at random from the U.S. population with a matching profile is 1 in 9.1 quintillion.” Following his arrest, an FBI Evidence Response Team and detectives served a search warrant on Gaeta’s residence. Blood-stained underwear, a blood- and mud-covered shirt, bloodstained shorts and a bloody towel were allegedly located in Gaeta’s bedroom. Jenise’s body was found about 11 a.m. Aug. 7. “The body was almost entirely submerged in a muddy bog in the woods adjacent to the trailer park, approximately 15-20 feet from where the underwear and shorts were located,” a probable cause statement said. “... A small wood pallet was lying over and further concealing the body in the mud. On top of the pallet, searchers located a black nylon duffle bag, luggage, and/or laptop bag style shoulder strap.” An autopsy conducted the following day showed “evidence of blunt force trauma to the head resulting in multiple skull frac-

tures, evidence of sexual assault ... and evidence of strangulation by ligature.” The autopsy determined Jenise’s body was moved a half-hour to three hours after her death. Gaeta and his family were first approached by FBI agents in their home the day after Jenise was reported missing. According to the probable cause statement, Gaeta allegedly told the agents he knew Jenise. His parents, though, said he was too upset too provide a voluntary DNA sample. A different FBI agent was able to collect a DNA sample during an Aug. 8 follow-up interview. The probable cause statement noted that Gaeta’s residence “is located two mobile homes just west of the wooded trail access way leading to where the body was found.” Court documents indicate that Gaeta acknowledged his role in Jenise’s rape and murder. “I again asked him if he was the only one involved with (Jenise) death and he slightly rocked back and forth,” a detective’s probable cause statement noted. “... I asked him again if he was the only one involved and (Gaeta) clearly nodded yes.”

Unwanted horses find love through SAFE place BY SERAINE PAGE SPAGE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Portland was found starving in a field in Snohomish County when he was discovered last June. Shortly after, the thoroughbred horse was retrieved by SAFE (Save a Forgotten Equine), an organization that focuses on rescuing, rehabbing, and retraining horses that have faced neglect or abuse. “He was not far from death,” said SAFE Executive Director and Co-Founder, Bonnie Hammond. Prior to arriving to a Kitsap County SAFE farm, the thoroughbred horse spent three weeks in animal control’s custody because of his thinness — his ribs, spine, hip and shoulder bones protruded. This October, his former owner is scheduled to go on trial for animal cruelty, Hammond said. But with an increased food intake and quality care, the former racehorse is looking better these days at his temporary home in Silverdale with Hammond. That’s the overall goal of SAFE — to get horses back to their former glory days through love and proper care. Hammond’s Silverdale site is one of several that homes SAFE horses as the animals recover and are prepared for adoptions. She currently has two

SAFE horses, Portland and Owen, as well as her personal horse, Jay. As a co-founder of the grassroots organization, she has also established Safe Harbor Stables in Woodinville, which is run completely by volunteers. At any given time, the organization has 28 horses going through rehab and or training to become more adoptable. Funding is through some grants, but mostly it comes from the public’s generosity. “I love SAFE for many reasons,” said SAFE Volunteer Coordinator Heather Evans-Keliher. “I feel their ethics on how they rescue (mainly working with animal control) are ideal. The care, treatment, and training the horses receive is exemplary. SAFE also offered me a place in their group to volunteer when I had no previous horse experience. They gave me knowledge on horses and friendship amongst the people. They are also a completely transparent organization. You know exactly where your donations go, how they are used, and what the goals are for the future.” The co-founder takes great pride in the transparency of sharing financial statements online. “We’re trying to build an organization that’s going to last a number of years,” said Hammond.”It’s definitely a partnership. We wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the people

who volunteer for us.” The executive director started the organization when she discovered that unwanted horses were ending up in what she calls the “slaughter pipeline” to be killed for their meat.That’s when she and a few others chose to pool funds together and help save those horses from feed lots where they were being fattened before being killed. That was in 2005, and Hammond, a former graphic designer, hasn’t looked back since. She’s seen tremendous recovery efforts for 150 horses that have been brought in, and she was thrilled when the USDA shut down the last of slaughterhouses. “We give them their lives back through care and the light comes back on in their eyes,” she said. “That whole process is fulfilling.” In 2007, the last U.S. plant that slaughtered horses closed. Since then, horses often are exported to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association newsletter. Between 1992 and 2007, it is estimated that between 75,000 to 150,000 horses of the U.S. domestic equine populations were sent to slaughter

The horses headed for slaughter often have that owners may not be able to afford or that have injured or are likely to injure people. Other reasons include dangerous to handle, lameness, or illness. Some of the population are also former riding or racing horses that can no longer perform and are left to die. On the organization’s website, horse lovers can follow the detailed, current information on the horses in SAFE’s care.

Photos tell of each animal’s journey from intake through adoption as they are nursed back to health. “A majority of the time, the horses come to us in poor to bad conditions, both physically and mentally. It’s heartbreaking to witness the effects of the abuse they suffered,” said Evans-Keliher. “But then slowly, day by day, with good food, medical care, and lots of kind words and energy, these scared, hurt horses transform into wonderful energetic mares and geldings. When they leave for their forever

home it’s so bittersweet. As a child, Georgann Falotico wanted to be a dancer. That passion stuck with her through the years. After spending a few years learning about accounting, Falotico turned back to her childhood hobby and decided to pursue dance therapy. Eventually the idea of dance therapy became the idea of standard therapy. Falotico stuck with it and earned a master’s degree in psychology from Antioch University Seattle. Afterwards, she started a private practice in Poulsbo. Throughout her career, Falotico became increasingly aware that not everyone in need of counseling could afford it. Many people that wanted and needed therapy could not get it because they were under financial stress. That led her to found Eagle’s Wing Counseling Center in collaboration with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bremerton. “There just needed to be a place like this,” Falotico said. She wasn’t kidding. Throughout the three years the center has existed, it has been very busy. With Harrison Medical Center often referring patients to the counseling center, the wait list was usually lengthy, she said. “Now that the Affordable Care Act is out, we haven’t had as many clients,” Falotico said. “Still, even with the Affordable Care Act, insurance doesn’t cover everything for everyone.” The organization is staffed entirely by licensed therapists and counselors. These members volunteer their time to Eagle’s Wing Counseling when they can — many have their own private practices as well. Falotico said the counseling center wants to attain a

Xxxxxxxxxxxxx non-profit status, although, ironically, they can’t afford the process. “We don’t really ask around for donations,” Falotico explained, “because people can’t write it off as a donation on their taxes.” “That doesn’t mean we’ll turn your donations away,” she added, laughing. Their clients are allowed to set their own prices as well as their own appointments. Prices are set on a sliding scale of $1 to $30 based on need, said Falotico, though the center is willing to offer counseling for free if their clients can’t afford to spend anything at all. Regardless of what price they pay, all clients are asked to pay it forward by giving an hour or two of their time for community service. “We’re still working on writing the mission statement right now,” she said, “but I would say that our goal is to improve the world by improving and helping individuals. The Voice of the Wetlands is a non-profit organization raising awareness and developing educational programs about the loss of wetlands in southern Louisiana — and to help heal the damage — from the 2010 BP

Winston has performed thousands of shows, which always include some of his best-known solo piano pieces, including melodic folk piano, Guaraldi’s Peanuts soundtrack pieces, New Orleans R&Boriented piano, Doors songs, and stride piano. He has several recordings in the works and will be incorporating some new material on this 2014 spring/summer tour. Since 1986, Winston has been raising money for food banks and service organizations, and will continue to do so by working with a local food bank in every tour market to hold a canned food drive at the show. At the Poulsbo concert, he will work with Gateway Fellowship’s Local Missions Fund.
