Agent uses drones to market homes Legality of eye-in-the-sky video murky

Real estate is a tough business and Ryan Haslet is always looking for that something that will give him an edge.

For one Everett home, that something is a stateof-the-art unmanned aircraft — a drone.

A few months ago, Haslet began hiring a photographer to fly a drone over some of the high-end homes he lists, capturing high-definition aerial footage of the properties that then can be incorporated into marketing videos.

“I’m trying to be on the front end of the trend,” Haslet said.

Haslet already uses a variety of marketing strategies to help sell his properties, including professional photos and a video choreographed to a stirring soundtrack.

The Everett home he’s listing now even has its own webpage www.3431GlacierPeak. com. The drone can swoop over properties, giving a bird’s eye view and some perspective to the area around a home.

It’s a particularly helpful tool when Haslet is working with buyers from other states or overseas, who don’t know the area.

He’s not the first real estate agent to use drones but it remains a fairly unusual perk he can offer potential sellers.

This listing is a $1.2 million home on 7.5 acres overlooking the Snohomish Valley.

It’s the perfect candidate for drone footage. Potential buyers can see the surrounding property far better from the sky.

“This is one of my favorite parts of my job,” Gregorits said.

The drone, manufactured by DJI, weighs a few pounds and looks like a four-armed star fish with propellers. In the air, it sounds like an angry swarm of bees.

Gregorits flies it with a hand-held controller that includes a slot for his iPhone.

He clips his smart phone into place and he can see exactly what the drone is filming on the phone screen.

He also gets constant readings on the drone’s distance, altitude and speed.

The $2,500 drone runs on a rechargeable lithium battery. And the controller uses AA batteries.

It can take both video and still photos. It uses a GPS stabilizing system that allows it hover at the same altitude for still shots.

feet in the air and the controller has about a quarter mile range, Gregorits said.

He does most of his flying in the 60 to 100 foot range.

“That’s high enough to get a good view but close enough to the property to get the detail in what we are shooting,” he said.

Gregorits taught himself to fly the drone. He said it wasn’t hard and most people could pick it up in a day with some practice.

He watched tutorials online and read the instruction manual.

He expects more real estate agents will want to use drones to help market their listings. In the six months his company has offered the service, requests continue to increase.

Creating videos of properties for sale is also becoming more prevalent.

He described professionally filmed video as “the future of real estate.”

“We’ve noticed people are using video not just for luxury listings,” he said. “They’ll use them on townhomes and smaller single-family homes

because they are trying to be on the cutting edge on what’s popular. They want to get an edge on the competition.”

Whether it’s legal to use drones in this situation is murky.

The FAA says it has the right to regulate drones and unmanned aerial vehicles should not be used for commercial purposes, unless authorized by the agency.

Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the FAA, said the agency authorizes unmanned aircraft systems on a case-by-case basis.

“A flight that is not for hobby or recreation requires a certified aircraft, a licensed pilot

and operating approval,” he wrote in a prepared response. “To date, two operations have met these criteria, and authorization was limited to the Arctic.

The FAA is continuing to review applications from (unmanned aircraft systems) operators as they are received.”

In March, an administrative law judge ruled that the FAA doesn’t clearly have authority to ban commercial use of drones. The FAA has since appealed.

Gregorits said his understanding is that the drone is legal because it was sold as a recreational device and he’s using it only on private property.

Stubborn gender gap in aerospace

The percentage of women working in the aerospace industry in Washington has remained stagnant for more than 20 years, according to a state labor market economist.

Women account for one in four jobs in aerospace and that has changed little since the 1990s, said Anneliese Vance-Sherman, an Employment Security Department economist based in Everett.

“I try not to go in with too many preconceived ideas when looking at the data,” Vance-Sherman said. “I knew it was going to be a male-dominated industry, but I thought there was going to be some change.”

That snapshot is for the entire industry, from accountants and receptionists to machinists and CEOs. The percentage is even lower when focusing on engineers and management.

“It’s far fewer,” said Sue Chodakewitz, chair of Women in Aerospace, a nonprofit in Washington, D.C., dedicated to expanding opportunities for women in the industry. “It’s not just CEOs. It’s senior managers and executives.”

On the positive side, women who work in aerospace in Washington make far more than men and women in other professions.

And while there’s a wage gap between the genders within aerospace, it’s been narrowing slowly and surely.

The numbers aren’t surprising for people who work within the industry, said Melanie Jordan, the chief operating officer for Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance.

But Jordan said she’s seen changes within the industry during her career. She now sees women in every niche of the aerospace industry.

“What we need to do is encourage our young people and young women, to ... engage them in math and science in everyday life,” Jordan said.

Vance-Sherman did her research when she was asked to give a talk at a Women in Aerospace luncheon hosted by the PNAA this summer. The focus of the conference was the changing demographics of the aerospace workforce.

The first thing that Vance-Sherman did was take a look at a U.S. Census database that combines federal and state numbers to get a picture of employers and

employees.

What she found was consistent under-representation of women in the aerospace workforce since 1991, the oldest available data, Vance-Sherman said.

“I found that overall, when we’re talking about gender, the aerospace workforce is, give or take since the early 1990s, about 25 percent of the workforce,” she said.

When looking at wages, Vance-Sherman found that there’s a wage gap between men and women who work in aerospace.

Men who work in aerospace made on average $89,943 a year compared to $77,016 a year for women, according to Census data from 2012, the most recent available data.

Women in aerospace make far more than men and women in other professions in the state.

The average wage for men in Washington is $65,463 a year. Women in the aerospace industry in Washington make almost double the $40,932 for women in other jobs.

And the wage gap between genders in aerospace is narrowing, while it’s not doing so as quickly in other industries.

In the early 1990s, women in the aerospace industry made about 60 cents for every dollar that men made. That’s increased to more than 80 cents on the dollar. In other professions, women made about 60 cents for every dollar that men made in the early 1990s.

And that has stayed the same over the years.

The data has limitations since it lumps all jobs together within the industry.

The wage gap probably becomes closer when comparing like jobs, said Jordan, adding she’s been in the chair making decisions on hiring.

“For the most part, you have a salary in mind,” Jordan said. “Whether it’s a man or a woman, you’re not going to change that number.”

But she said it’s a simple fact that there aren’t as many women who are engineers or aerospace executives as men.

Aviation Week takes an annual look at demographic data for the aerospace and defense industry each year. In numbers released last month, the publication found that just 15 percent of engineers are women. And that just 11 percent of women occupy senior engineering executive positions.

The gender gap is an issue that troubles academics, said Carole Rickard Hedden, executive editorial director for Aviation Week.

Engineering schools also see low numbers of women students.

“They are flummoxed,” she said. “If they can’t move their needle, the companies can’t move theirs.”

There are probably all sorts of reasons for the gender gap, said Chodakewitz of the nonprofit Women in Aerospace.

“I knew it was going to be a maledominated industry, but I thought there was going to be some change.”

— Anneliese Vance-Sherman She said it’s a bit like the construction industry, which is thought to be such a traditionally male domain that women gravitate away from it as a career choice.

She notes that just 5 percent of pilots are women.

And that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, she said.

“I don’t think there’s anything inherent in the aerospace industry that would be a roadblock for any competent engineer of either gender,” Chodakewitz said. “There may not be the models in place for young women who are deciding what path to choose in their career.”

There’s an opportunity for change to happen quickly, said Jordan of PNAA. The Baby Boomer generation is reaching retirement age.

As they leave the workforce, there will be more opportunities for women in younger generations.

“When you look around you see a lot of women in aerospace,” Jordan said. “They may not be engineers and they may not be in the executive suites, but there are more opportunities to do that.”

What needs to happen is for young women and girls to take the science, technology, engineering and math courses — the STEM courses, Jordan said.

Women within the industry need to mentor young women to keep them inspired to stay on the course from very early ages through college, she said.

For her part, Vance-Sherman hopes that the research will lead people to ask further questions.

“It’s not really my place to answer those questions,” Vance-Sherman said. “My role is providing information to help industry leaders and help people throughout out state make well-informed decisions.”

Bringing family lessons from Japan Sisters came to U.S. to learn English, became developers

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE – Yuko Abe only knows of one other developer who’s a woman.

That’s not a lot different from her previous line of work.

“If you think of the fishing industry, there aren’t many females either,” Abe said.

She is the president of AFCO & Sons, a Mountlake Terrace firm that builds homes and apartments in south Snohomish County and other parts of the Puget Sound area.

She also heads Nomco & Co., her family’s business, which is involved in construction, hotel management and the funeral industry in Ishinomaki in northern Japan.

While she lives in America, Abe, 39, spends about half of her time in Japan.

“There are a lot of expensive phone calls back and forth,” she said.

The company was started by her father, Atsushi Abe, who grew up in Ishinomaki but traveled the world as a radio operator on a commercial ship.

In 1980, Atsushi Abe, who died two years ago, decided to return to his hometown and start a business buying and selling vessels. He soon expanded into other industries.

Atsushi Abe wanted to get into commercial fishing, but competition was fierce in Japan. He had traveled to Seattle twice and had a friend who lived in the area.

He decided to start a fishing business in Edmonds. Because the fishing industry is tightly regulated, Atsushi Abe worked with an American business partner.

He had a boat built called the Frontier Spirit in 1989 and then added two more boats, the Frontier Mariner later in 1989 and the Frontier Explorer in 1990-91.

Atsushi Abe and his wife, Kimiyo, had three children. When they reached college age, Atsushi Abe sent them to America to learn English.

“If you want to do business internationally, you have to speak English,” Yuko Abe said.

She spent four years taking classes, first at Seattle Central College and then Seattle University. She then started working with the commercial fishing business, which was called the Alaska Frontier Co. and had offices near Arnies Restaurant on the Edmonds waterfront.

bers to harvest Pacific cod in the Bering Sea. The Alaska Frontier Co. sold thousands of cases of fish each season across the world.

In 2006, the family decided to expand operations in America by starting a development company that eventually came to be called AFCO & Sons.

AFCO stands for the Alaska Frontier Company. The ‘Sons’ part came from Atsushi Abe. “My dad wanted to name it ‘Sons,’” Yuko Abe said. “He only had one son and two daughters, but we thought, ‘Why

not?’”

Yuko Abe would run the company and her younger sister, Kumi Abe, would be vice president. Their younger brother, Daisuke Abe, lives in Tokyo.

Atsushi Abe thought that the company’s philosophy would translate well across the Pacific.

“My dad was confident that we could be successful in real estate in the U.S.,” said Kumi Abe, who is now 34.

Their first project was to build an 18-unit apartment complex in Mountlake Terrace. That’s where they set up offices

for the new company.

The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties doesn’t keep track of the number of developers who are women. “Women are playing an increasing role in development in this area,” said Mike Pattison of the association, who works in Snohomish County.

“More and more, we’re seeing women not just running companies, but taking leadership roles in our organization.”

He points to Martha Rose, a Shoreline developer who is president of the Master Builders Association. A previous presi-

Just as the development arm of the company started up, the Abes received an offer from a competitor for their commercial fishing operations. The family was friendly with the competitor, Clipper Seafood, and the deal just made sense, Yuko Abe said.

“The offer we received was great,” Yuko Abe said.

They sold that portion of the business in September 2008, a month after the financial collapse. Just as they started to focus on development, the housing market went upside down.

That didn’t stop her from building the company’s largest project, Arbor Village, a 123-unit, five-story apartment complex at 23609 56th Ave. W. Yuko Abe purchased the land for the development in 2009 and started the $19 million project in 2011. It was finished in August 2013.

With her company’s offices next door, Yuko Abe said, she’s comfortable with Mountlake Terrace.

“If you drive to the city, it’s so convenient. It’s not as far as Lynnwood or Mill Creek,” Abe said. “But the price point is so different from Seattle.

“We also have a chance to grow with the city.”

The Arbor Village project has won praise. This year, Arbor Village received a Vision 2040 award from the Puget Sound Regional Council, which gives annual awards to recognize regional innovations in managing growth and sustaining quality of life.

About 95 percent of the apartments are leased. Commercial space on the ground floor has been less successful. The building can accommodate up to nine businesses, but only one space is leased. That’s a salon.

“I want to keep building, but it has to pencil out,” Yuko Abe said.

AFCO & Sons has also bought apartment complexes in Seattle and Edmonds, renovated them and sold them for a profit, Yuko Abe said.

urbs. Another 10 are in the pipeline. Yuko and Kumi Abe hope to build about 20 a year, but the recession has hamstrung that plan.

The operation in Snohomish County is small compared to the Japanese company.

AFCO & Sons employs six people. The Japanese portion of the company employs 170 and is one of the largest employers in Ishinomaki, which was one of the city’s most hurt by a 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Even though she grew up in Japan, Yuko Abe says she’s firmly planted in

America.

She lives with her husband, Takao Kikuchi, in a Seattle condo the family bought when they first started the commercial fishing business. Her husband, who is not involved in AFCO & Sons, owns Dragonfish Asian Café in the Paramount Hotel in downtown Seattle. Kumi Abe lives a couple of blocks away from their Mountlake Terrace offices.

Yuko Abe said she enjoys the business environment in America.

“It’s so active and fast,” she said. “In Japan, it’s been quiet for over 20 years.”

Quantum’s new head embraces role

EVERETT — Most people wouldn’t expect to start at the bottom of a company and in just over a decade become that company’s president.

Melissa Benton did exactly that.

She was hired at Quantum Windows & Doors 11 years ago in the human resources department. She was appointed president in May. “As the economy was on the downturn, I slowly started to take on more roles because the company was getting smaller and I needed more work. I acquired different departments, slowly moving out of HR, and more into sales, engineering and client services,” Benton said.

She leads the privately held company that expects to make $10 million in sales this year. The company employs 55 and has a factory building doors and windows for high-end custom homes all over the country.

Locally, the business does home remodels and helps people find that entry door, sliding door or windows that completes their home.

“Melissa brings in-depth industry knowledge and critical insights about operations, our customers as well as a vision for growth,” said Ed Stroman, chairman of the Quantum board of directors, in an email. “The board looked at a number of internal and external candidates, and Melissa stood out as the smart choice.

“Melissa has the drive, agility and leadership needed to lead Quantum in the dynamic environment the windows and doors industry is operating in today.”

Quantum Home & Windows was founded in 1982 by Everett homebuilders. The company, located at 2720 34th St., Everett, now has showrooms in Washington, California, British Columbia and

Connecticut. The company is considering adding a showroom in Hawaii as well.

“We deal in a lot of homes where the windows and the doors are actually the main feature of the home,” Benton said.

“So we get really involved with designers and homeowners. They are very invested in the process.”

Benton, a Snohomish native, for the past five years has held the position of director of client services, which encompassed administration, engineering, and operations.

She said she’s ready for taking on her new role.

“It was perfect timing, with kids growing up, being in a position where I can focus more on my career, and having the background I did with the company,” said Benton, who lives with her family near Lake Goodwin.

She wants the company to continue on the successful path that it’s been on: Producing quality, high-end openings while providing a seamless process for client from start to finish.

“The goal is not to change up the company because we have a great experienced dedicated staff here with several employees celebrating 30 years (with the company) this year,” she said. “They are very knowledgeable in what they do and they continue to bring their knowledge to the market.”

Last year, the company introduced their new product line, the Quantum Aluminum Clad, an entire product line from windows to doors with aluminum clad exterior an wood interior.

“We’ve been able to take those new products out to new markets and territories, expanding our sales staff.” Benton said. “We’ve always had a national influence, and our goal is to increase that in the next couple of years.”

Meet Snohomish County’s trip adviser

LYNNWOOD — Amy Spain describes the growth of tourism while she’s been at the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau as phenomenal.

New tourism attractions that have opened since she started include the Future of Flight, Comcast Arena, Lynnwood Convention Center, Tulalip Resort Casino, Flying Heritage Collection and Historic Flight Foundation.

“Those developments and others really changed the fabric of tourism in Snohomish County so we had to up our game,” said Spain, who serves as the bureau’s executive director.

The 2010 Snohomish County Strategic Tourism Plan was passed in 2011 by the Snohomish County Council and became the bureau’s scope of work.

Part of that work included the development of mobile self-guided tours throughout the county and the launch of a new tourism website that is equally responsive for desktop computer users or those using mobile devices.

“When I think of successes and highlights of work done with a fairly small organization we have really embraced technology,” Spain said. “I know this

training seminars hosted by the Washington Society of Association Executives to learn about her clients, better understand their businesses, and to bring conventions to Snohomish County.

Along the way, she also learned about association management.

That knowledge coupled with her then nine years of experience working for the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau, helped lead her into her current role, Spain added.

She now heads an organization consisting of eight employees, three visitor information centers, a $1 million budget, about 100 volunteers and a driving mission to bring business into Snohomish County through tourism.

“I don’t think we would have any of the things we have for tourism in this county if it wasn’t for the lead of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau,” said Warren Beach, general manager of Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites in South Everett. “It really has put us on the map.”

Spain is the consummate professional, added Beach, who also serves as chairman of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau Board of Directors.

One of the largest tasks Spain has taken on since was the launch in May 2013 of a new destination branding campaign. Snohomish County Tourism Bureau partnered with Nashville-based North Star Destination Strategies to create the brand with the tagline, ‘Open Up.’ The brand was designed to increase awareness of Snohomish County and attract more future visitors.

“She has the passion for the industry she’s in and for the county she works in and lives in,” he said.

Spain moved to Washington in 1991 but grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. She earned a business in administration degree with a minor in marketing from Arizona State University. Her interest in business and travel started when she was young, Spain said.

“I think that’s partially because my father was an entrepreneur and had his own company that was able to work with suppliers in other countries,” she said.

“We always ended up having people at our home from other countries and that sparked an interest in international travel

“We definitely believe the Open Up strategy does benefit us from the antique shopping aspect as well as the recreational opportunities,” Emge said.

The Tourism Bureau over the past year has also focused on educating the local community.

For example, a “hot sheet” or sampling of events taking place throughout the county is sent every month to hotel managers, Spain said. They share it with their staff who can then recommend attractions to visitors.

Often times, those who spend the most time interacting with visitors are offered opportunities to experience the attractions so they can speak about them from a

firsthand perspective.

Spain collaborates well with her tourism partners, acts as an advocate in regional and statewide tourism matters, and reaches out to help partners stay informed, said Mary Monroe, tourism manager for the City of Lynnwood.

“I believe the limited resources for tourism throughout the state has made it necessary and preferable to establish partnerships and work collaboratively,” she said.

Spain said she remains enthusiastic about her role and believes the third largest industry in Snohomish County is poised for future growth.

“Tourism has been a wonderful career,” she said. “It’s a very positive industry sector to be in.”

The Johnny Appleseed of tomatoes

T

om Wagner isn’t a businessman.

Someone told him that once.

It wasn’t meant as a compliment but Wagner accepted the comment with pride.

He sees himself as a plant engineer. A mad scientist. The Johnny Appleseed of tomatoes.

Anything but a businessman.

Perhaps that is why the Everett man, one of the most prolific tomato and potato breeders in the world, remains virtually unknown in the U.S. His most famous creation — the tangy, striped Green Zebra tomato — is a favorite in home gardens, farmer’s markets and top restaurants. The tomato was a clue once on Jeopardy.

“Tom’s Green Zebra unleashed a whole new age in tomatoes,” said Amy Goldman, author of “The Heirloom Tomato.”

“He’s made tomatoes fun and a lot of them are delicious.”

He’s created hundreds of thousands of other tomatoes and potatoes — although only the best are trialed and sold as seed for home gardeners or professional growers. Some of his newest varieties are part of a new class of blue tomatoes, including a cherry tomato called Dancing with Smurfs. Another variety he’s created is dark red and sports tiny horns.

For Wagner, the obsessive push to create new varieties is fueled not by money but by the drive to give something to the world that is new and better and wholly different. And because he can.

“I want to create the best food, the most nutritious food, I can,” Wagner said.

“Nobody else is going to do it.”

■■■ Wagner, 68, talks fast, as if there isn’t enough time in the day. It’s not easy to listen to people, he says, because he’s hard of hearing. He’s more of a show-and-tell guy.

But plants, he can hear them. They whisper to him. They tell him things. Are they too hot, too cold? Are they stressed?

Are they getting enough nutrients? Are they looking for a pollinator? That’s the plant equivalent of trolling a single’s bar.

Wagner lives not on a farm but in a two-bedroom apartment off Casino Road with his wife — and his mistress. That’s what he calls the all-consuming work of plant breeding. It consumes his days and sometimes his dreams.

“They say you never should bring your mistress home,” he says. “But I did.”

He’s a meticulous record keeper. He saves seed from all of his crosses. They go in a plastic bag with a notecard noting the lineage of the plant and some notes on special characteristics. He keeps thousands of these in clear plastic containers in his apartment. Many more are saved elsewhere.

Wagner has developed a network of people who help him test his plants. His tomatoes and potatoes are being grown in Wales, France, Switzerland, Belize and

The Herbfarm, a high-end Woodinville restaurant, gives Wagner space to grow plants at its farm and chefs use some of his tomatoes.

“I respect him,” said Bill Vingelen, who manages the farm about a mile away from the restaurant. “He needs a sidekick that can help him physically. We respect his research. He’s doing things most people don’t, and it’s not profitable. He’s doing it out of love. It’s a passion.”

It seems as if Wagner himself was bred for this.

He grew up on a farm in Kansas.

His grandparents bred and sold mules.

His grandmother’s chicken breeding skills helped the family get through the Depression. One line of his family hails from the Isle of Man, and includes farmers and herbalists many generations back.

His ancestors survived the potato famine partly because they were growing blight-resistant potatoes.

As early as 7, Wagner remembers his first attempts to breed animals and plants: cows, chickens, peas, beans, tomatoes and Indian corn with bright-colored kernels.

He could observe and track the particular characteristics of animals and plants. He could tell his father, for instance, which cows produced the best milk.

Wagner earned three degrees from the University of Kansas in anthropology, botany and geography. He went onto have “about 50 jobs,” including a stint with Frito-Lay as a potato buyer, a teacher and a consultant for growers.

Always, he worked on his own breeding projects.

■■■ He started working on what would become the famous Green Zebra tomato in the 1950s. He was disappointed with the green tomato available in Kansas at the time. It cracked and its flesh was too soft and mushy. Wagner began experi-

menting with other tomatoes, trying to keep the good characteristics and breed out the bad.

It took nearly two decades and hundreds of crosses before Wagner finally produced the Green Zebra: sweet, tangy and lined with visually-striking yellow and green stripes.

He remembers running into the farmhouse he shared with his parents.

“I showed it to my dad and he said, ‘Nobody is going to want a tomato that’s green.’”

How wrong his father was. The tomato became famous after Alice Waters, chef, author and owner of Chez Panisse, a famous Berkeley, California, restaurant, listed it as one of her favorites.

Wagner makes little money from his work. He started Tater Mater in 1983 and put out a catalog for three years. He didn’t have the time or business skills to manage the catalog and continue his work. Now his seeds are available online through his website TaterMaterSeeds.com.

■■■ Wagner himself is a rare breed. Most professional plant breeders draw a salary working for institutions that can support their work, such as universities, research centers or large seed companies.

Independent plant breeders can patent new varieties or apply for a certificate from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that gives them the exclusive right to market their creations in the U.S. Wagner has done neither because he says the process is time-consuming and expensive.

Port chief’s retirement leaves void

EVERETT — John Mohr always aimed to look at the big picture as Port of Everett’s chief executive officer.

Under Mohr’s eye, the port has reworked cargo systems, forecast global economies and took a few steps back to take giant leaps forward.

After 16 years at the Port of Everett, Mohr is retiring, effective January. His replacement is expected to be chosen this month.

“My first care has been to maintain the business, focused inside the fence line,” said Mohr. “Then we have to add value to the whole community. The port has to participate in the community, increase opportunities and be strategic.”

While port operations tend to be brickand-mortar centric, Mohr has looked beyond that to envision opportunities to benefit the port that have a spillover effect for Everett and the entire state.

“John has been a tremendous asset to the Everett community for the last 16 years,” said U.S. Sen. Patty Murray. “He has been a great partner on so many projects and issues, including port security, international trade and strengthening American ports. He is leaving the Port of Everett in a strong place among our West Coast ports and I will miss working with him.”

Addressing shipments of Boeing parts enabled the milestone shipment of the 1,000th Boeing 777 airplane. This could only be done with the investment of infrastructure and the skilled workforce assembled under Mohr’s tutelage. This poised Everett to compete for Boeing 787 and 777X assembly.

Mohr points to the addition of the Mount Baker Terminal as a key piece of this achievement.

“Mount Baker is as important as a runway at Paine Field,” he said.

The terminal serves as a transfer facility for these parts to get the three miles from the docks to the Boeing plant. The sticking point was moving the cumbersome pieces that, because of the size, required the closure of the BNSF rail line so oversize rail cars could be employed.

His seed company online has a few thousand customers and doesn’t come close to supporting his research, although at least one company selling seeds for his tomatoes promised to give him royalties.

They’ve also agreed to cover some of his expenses until the royalties come in.

Aaron Whaley, a seed producer and distributor in Wisconsin, said he’s screening 15 of Wagner’s tomato varieties at his farm for distribution.

“There are not a lot of independent plant breeders like Tom,” Whaley said.

“Companies like Burpee or Ball have their own internal breeding programs.”

Mohr credits the nimbleness of the skilled labor force with this achievement and also pinpoints this as enabling the port to shift emphasis from wood products to break bulk cargo handling.

“I came from wood products ports,” Mohr said referring to his former positions at the port in Olympia along with ports in Newport and Coos Bay, Oregon.

“When the Asian market sought wood elsewhere (than the U.S.) we knew we had to retool our business plan to go after

other cargoes.”

With Everett longshoreman already handling heavy cargo and bulk cargo, including grain and oil, Mohr set his sights on securing special project cargoes that are one of a kind pieces. These break bulk shipments do not fit into containers.

Parts for Boeing led the list in addition to heavy equipment used in gold mining and oil refining along with wind mill blades.

“These cargoes are big, bulky and have a different center of gravity,” said Mohr.

Blue tomatoes contain the same antioxidants found in blueberries. These varieties draw their color from wild tomatoes found in the Galapagos Islands and Peru.

Wagner crossed Indigo Rose with his famous Green Zebra to create BlueGreen Zebra, which has blue and green

stripes, and Muddy Waters, which features green flesh and a dark blue skin.

Breeding new crops is essential for food security, especially as the climate changes, Wagner says.

He breeds potatoes, for instance, that have better yields, disease resistance and nutrition.

He’s working on potatoes that have lower glycemic levels and more protein.

Taste is essential, too.

“People think about a tomato as a vegetable, like a ho-hum carrot or turnip or head of cabbage,” he said. “It’s not. It’s a fruit and the star of the show. All the exotic flavors and aromas bring back thoughts of yesteryear … it becomes a

Mohr has also set the Port of Everett in position to be a recreational hub.

The Port of Everett celebrated in August the start of the last phase of an $8 million cleanup on the central waterfront district. The cleanup opens the way for the Waterfront Place development, which is expected to bring a mix of homes, businesses and public spaces to the waterfront.

This redevelopment could have not occurred, said Mohr, without an extra ordinary environmental cleanup that has spanned most of his time as port chief.

“John’s leadership has changed the face of the Everett and Mukilteo waterfronts,” Port Commissioner Troy McClelland said. “He has worked tirelessly to strategically position the Port of Everett for growth.”

Credit union thrives even post-mill Mill Town marks 75 years serving the community this month

EVERETT — For decades, workers at the former Kimberly-Clark mill built their lives in town, meeting spouses, having children and finding lifelong friends.

And that meant mortgages, college tuition and cars.

Mill Town Credit Union helped generations of those workers put away savings and secure loans and mortgages for life’s necessities. Today, the mill may be gone — it closed in 2012 — but the credit union founded by workers continues on.

This month, Mill Town Credit Union celebrates its 75th anniversary. And it’s going strong thanks to its members, said Mill Town’s chief executive officer Laura Leuze.

“The credit union was started by people before we were even born,” said Leuze, who has worked at the credit union for 20 years. “We have generations of memberships coming from just former mill employees. We have to be good at what we do and get to personally know

Mill Town Credit Union currently has 2,821 members with more than $45 million in assets. The credit union has one of the highest capital ratios in the state, rated five star by Bauer Financials, she said.

Mill Town Credit Union rests with the former workers of the mill.

Through the mill’s closure, members have been loyal to the credit union, even those who have moved away, Leuze said.

“The closing of the (mill) was hard on our membership, but we worked with anyone that needed help,” Leuze said.

The institution allowed extensions, reduced payments and shifted to interest-only payments to help former workers until they could get back on their feet.

“After the mill’s closure, our members continued to drive to the credit union to do their banking,” said Cathy Vanderberg, a credit union board member who worked at the mill for 25 years. “They would always run into people they had worked with and they would catch up....

“About 50 people watched the demolition of the oldest mill building from the credit union building. It was very emotional.”

In the new Mill Town Credit Union a home style lobby with comfortable seating, a fireplace and coffee, fosters a comfortable spot for members to continue to gather and catch up.

“Every day is like a reunion in our lobby,” said Leuze.

The Port of Everett, in partnership with the Department of Ecology, is restoring the environmental health of the Everett waterfront and creating opportunities for improved quality of life and jobs.

On August 21, more than 75 people attended the Port of Everett’s community event near 14th Street and West Marine View Drive to kick off the final, major environmental cleanup of Waterfront Place Central development.

“Cleanups don’t become easier, and they don’t become any quicker, and if you let them persist, they become more

expensive,” Port Commissioner Troy McClelland told the crowd. “I would like to thank the Port staff, the Department of Ecology, and really thank the constituency of the Port of Everett for being with us on this journey. As a community, we should all be proud that we are aggressively cleaning up these sites so they can be put back into productive use as soon as possible.”

The event featured an 8-foot tall by 12-foot wide sand sculpture to commemorate the NEARLY $8 MILLION environmental cleanup project and kick’s off the Everett waterfront’s revitalization efforts. Visit www.waterfrontplace.com.

The sand sculpture was designed and created by local world-renowned sculpturist, Charlie Beaulieu. The sand sculpture, created with 50,000 pounds of sand, represents the artful blend of healthy, vibrant sea life and creatures as well as the PROMISE of jobs, economic vitality and quality of life on the waterfront.

Once this cleanup is complete in April 2015, the Port will have removed 99.9 percent of the contamination and more than 120,000 tons of contaminated soil from Waterfront Place Central. This is equivalent to 12,000 dump truck loads. The project also removes five docks, more than 700 creosote treated piles, a marine railway that supported ship repair and operations for decades, the 14th Street Marine Railway; and the project will also reconstruct 360-feet of failing bulkhead.

The contractors for the cleanup projects are Magnus Pacific and Clearcreek Contractors.

Banging the drum for local music

K

aitlin Beard has been in rock bands for years. The Everett singer currently takes the stage with a group called In The Between, performing at bars and nightclubs in hopes that she might one day play music for a living.

Beard, 32, moved a little closer to that dream in May by signing with London Tone Music, a record label in Shoreline. Unlike most music industry deals, though, hers was for just one song.

“Hinder,” the hard rock ballad she recorded in August, is part of the project 52x52: A Year in Your Ear, in which London Tone releases a new song each week for the duration of 2014. So far the label has put out 32 singles, available on iTunes and streaming on Spotify and SoundCloud.com.

Most of the musicians hail from the Pacific Northwest. They range from up-and-coming to established, from folk and pop to jazz and country. The only requirement is that their song has never been commercially distributed before.

“All these bands in the local market are people who are striving to learn, and grow, and do what they need to do to make this passion a full-time occupation,” said Jeffrey Ross, one of five partners at London Tone Music Group.

Ross, whose claim to fame is discovering Kenny G, is one half of the consulting company 2 Jeffs on Music. He and partner Jeff Heiman run the business side of the 52x52 project.

“To find those talents, to develop their careers even two or three notches above where they are, is really quite satisfying,” Heiman said. “We’re helping to build their foundation — their fan base, their social media, the attention they get from press and radio — to a point where they get bigger locally, and then can spread out regionally.”

Beard and bandmate Shane Scot, 39, were introduced to Ross and Heiman after competing in a battle of the bands at the Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle. They said joining 52x52 was a no-brainer.

“It’s like, what do we have to lose?”

Beard said. “We have everything to gain.

If this gets us out there — puts our name a little further than we could have on our own — then that’s what we gain.”

The songs are recorded at London Bridge Studio in Shoreline, the birthplace of platinum albums by Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Blind Melon and Candlebox in the 1990s. More recently, it’s hosted acts like 3 Doors Down, Nickelback and OneRepublic.

The rich history of the studio is part of 52x52’s pitch to young artists: Come stand where the masters once stood — and where elite engineers are mixing tracks — and record a song.

“It’s breathtaking when you go in

there,” Beard said. “There are artists on the wall that I’ve been listening to since the late ‘80s. I remember recording in that room and I was thinking, ‘I should go barefoot.’ Because I’m sure they were sweating just as much as I was, if not more.”

A couple of members of the Italian grunge band Neodea, who recorded a song for 52x52, fell to their knees and kissed the parking lot as they walked up to the studio.

“Everything they’ve ever loved came out of London Bridge,” Heiman said.

The other three partners of London Tone are the owners of the studio, Jonathan Plum, Geoff Ott and Eric Lilavois.

They handle the production aspect of 52x52. Heiman met them while serving as president of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Grammys.

“They had this germ of an idea to do something once a week,” Heiman recalled.

But they had no experience with distribution. That’s where the marketing and management skills of the two Jeffs came in handy.

“We didn’t know much about that side,” said London Bridge owner Plum. “We were focused on recording the music, not so much getting it out there and making money from the music.”

The five of them sat down to talk about the project in October 2012 and formed London Tone Music Group the next April. The first song in the 52x52 catalog, “Pilots” by 48-year-old Kim Virant of Continued on Page 18

Since then they’ve tackled tracks from a mixed bag of genres: garage rock, indie rock, hip-hop, R&B, electronica, alternative country, grunge, world music and even a children’s song.

“The musical consumer has changed,” Ross said.

“Particularly young people — they don’t necessarily just focus on one genre of music. It’s not unlikely for someone to like a rap song and also listen to a country song.”

Still, Ross drew a line when the project began:

“I said no polka music,” he recalled.

“Right,” Heiman said.

“But if we get a good polka artist, we will.”

Musicians can apply to be part of the project on Sonicbids.com, a networking site for people in the music industry. All submissions are considered, whether the artist has a large regional following or no following at all.

“A lot of the decisions that are driving the signing of artists now are based on how many Facebook friends you have, how many YouTube views you have, how many Twitter followers you have,” Ross said. “We’ve thrown that

Once there’s mutual interest between London Tone and an artist, a contract is negotiated and the band comes to the studio to record with the producers.

Meanwhile the two Jeffs do interviews, band bios, photo shoots, cover art, press releases and social media promotion.

The business model is a talent swap of sorts: artists

contribute original music and in return get studio time, track production, coaching and management. They’re fed and, if needed, put up in hotels.

London Tone owns the rights to the songs, as well as a portion of the publishing rights (the artists retain all songwriting credits).

After a year, artists can re-record their tracks, but the 52x52 versions belong to London Tone.

money, the artist receives “a very generous split of the revenues from dollar one,” according to Ross.

This is because there’s no recoupment, a standard industry process whereby musicians must repay the studio for the cost of production before earning any money.

For the London Tone team, the project is an investment in emerging talent and an exercise in owning intellectual property.

“We’re building this catalog of music of all these interesting artists, and you never know where any of them are going to go,” Heiman said.

Ross added: “The music industry is a river of nickels. There’s a lot of little pots of money that are out there, and you have to just try to exploit those and hopefully they’ll add up to something at some point.”

Four of the 52x52 songs have been licensed to play in the overhead music systems of 10,000 Starbucks stores around the world.

One of those songs, “Constellations” by I’m With Amy, was licensed by the hit MTV series “Awkward” for the upcoming fall season.

It also happened to be the first song that singer Amy Piñon ever recorded in a professional studio.

She met guitarist Abe Woolsey while studying audio engineering at the Art Institute of Seattle and the two submitted a demo track to the London Tone team.

“She has a lot of potential,” Ross said. “But prior to her involvement in 52x52, nobody knew who she was and she was trying to find her way. We’ve helped her by establishing some steps along the path.”

Other 52x52 artists are more experienced. The most prolific performers of the bunch are indie rock duo Science!, which consists of a Shoreline Community College instructor Jim Elenteny and music booking agent Justin Stang. They’re on track to play over 100 live shows this year.

Stang says working with

London Tone opened new doors and expanded their fan base. He also liked meeting fellow 52x52 artists.

“The music business tends to be a very network-oriented business, so having that wide variety of musicians and artists certainly helps,” he said.

Ross and Heiman say they couldn’t find anything like 52x52 when researching the idea last year. There was an artist who recorded a new song each week, charging fans a subscription. Another did a song a day for a while.

“I’ve never seen this model before, in this particular way,” said David Hirshland, an executive vice president at BMG Chrysalis, one of the world’s largest music publishing companies.

“In some ways those guys are crazy, but thank God for them is what I say,” he said. “Honestly, if they’re good at it — as they should be — it could be a good model for scenes around the country. ” In March, hip hop mogul Russell Simmons partnered with Samsung to launch an Internet radio station called ADD52, which streams music by unsigned pop artists from “all corners of the world.”

Each week one of the songs is chosen to be professionally recorded.

While ADD52 is a more expensive and extensive endeavor than 52x52, the primary difference between the two projects is that London Tone takes on all genres, from mainstream to esoteric, with the ultimate goal of developing regional musicians rather than discovering bankable pop stars.

“Whether the song or the artist ever go to a super high level — because most don’t — there’s still that song that they wrote that meant something to them when they were writing it,” Heiman said.

“Whether they felt that it would be shared with the world, or just their family, or just themselves in their room… they’ve written a great song that has touched at least the five of us in this company.

“And we wanna bang the drum for them.”

Franchises could face bumpy ride N

otice to current and wannabe entrepreneurs: Big time changes may be coming. And, in the words of actress Bette Davis, “Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.”

Ms. Davis’s famous line is from a movie called, “All About Eve” and the night’s bumpiness was coming from her guests’ stormy dialogue.

For today’s entrepreneurs, the bumpiness is coming from a legal action by the federal government.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is claiming that McDonald’s, as a franchisor, is a “joint employer” with its franchise owners in localities throughout the United States. This legal view, if upheld in court, would change the economic structure and very nature of franchising.

It is not certain that the courts will see things the NLRB’s way. In earlier court rulings, and even NLRB’s own rules, there are strong precedents for just the opposite view — that franchisors are not joint employers unless they make a distinct effort to be so. Still, it would be unwise to underestimate the skill and, most importantly, the persistence of a government agency like the NLRB to pursue its case.

If the NLRB’s view were to prevail against McDonald’s one significant change is that it would open up the cash

drawers of franchisors to litigants — current or former employees of local franchises that have any sort of beef with their local manager.

Currently, those James disputes have to be McCusker settled locally with the local franchise Business owner, who is the legal employer.

101 This usually makes the potential payoff of a lawsuit too small to attract big-league attention.

If the courts redefine McDonald’s legal standing as a franchisor to include being a joint employer with its more than 3,000 U.S. franchisees, who operate over 11,000 restaurants in the U.S., it will change the foundation of the company and its business strategy.

Moreover, it will do the same thing to every one of the franchise-based businesses in America.

McDonald’s has long been a target of labor union advocates. Its size and role in creating the fast-food business has made it an industry leader, and its active anti-union stance has made it organized labor’s nemesis.

ruling stands. Turning franchisors into joint-employers could create many opportunities for organized labor.

But because the idea of entry-level labor being a stepping stone rather than a permanent position is inimical to the seniority concept behind organized labor, there would not be room enough for both in the new franchising structure.

Even if the NLRB ruling doesn’t produce a wave of unionization it will increase the costs for franchisees and for customers.

The costs of litigating workplace disputes will be distributed to all franchises and, ultimately, be passed on to those who purchase products or services from them. Translation: Be prepared to pay more for your sandwich or hamburger.

The NLRB ruling might also cause individual franchises to be caught up in the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, with the result that even the smallest franchise operations will have to absorb the costs of medical insurance coverage into the price of your meal or your oil change.

It will take a while for this legal issue to sort itself out but anyone considering going into business as a franchise owner should consider its possibilities when calculating and forecasting margins, capital requirements, and profits.

It’s going to make a big difference.

Franchises, especially food service and other hospitality businesses, have organizational structures built on entry-level workforce members.

Employment in these franchises opened the door to the workforce for millions of people, providing wages and work experience for young people, recent immigrants, and late-entry workers.

There are very few career-level or lifetime jobs in these industries, but a remarkable number of today’s top executives in large corporations got their first paychecks from a food-service franchise.

Rally the troops around the corporate cause through communications, events, volunteer activities and board representation. Feet on the street will add punch to your program.

The size of your company doesn’t matter; however, planning your alignment, focus and selection process up front will produce better results.

Unseen risks of smartphones, tablets If that reminds the employee where it was left, a new lock code can be sent to the phone and the employee can retrieve it.

If not, a signal Sven can be sent that Mogelgaard will erase the phone next time it’s Tech Talk turned on.

Controlling use by employees is a different story, especially if employees are using their own devices.

First and foremost, employers need to have a clear written policy regarding mobile device use.

This policy needs to spell out at a minimum what charges will be covered by the company and what will be the responsibility of the employee.

This includes roaming, data and total minutes used per billing cycle.

This policy may also limit what company information can be stored on a device, what apps may be installed and even what websites are acceptable.

Having a written policy is only the first

step. As Ronald Reagan said, “trust but verify.”

Good mobile device management software allows an employer to set a wide range of boundaries.

The number of minutes used can be monitored and controlled. Geographic locations can be blocked to control roaming costs. Websites can be whitelisted or blacklisted.

Even the installation of apps can be controlled.

So how does mobile device management work?

Well, there’s an app for that.

The app installs on the device and reports back to the mobile-device-management program.

The master program resides in the cloud, on a local computer, or with your provider.

The employer installs this app on the device to be monitored or has the employee download it to the device they’re using.

To avoid tampering, the app can be set to automatically re-install if removed or to require a password to remove it.

The spectrum of mobile device management tools is broad, and so is the cost.

If these devices fall into the wrong hands, the consequences could be severe.

Very basic protection that locates and erases a device may cost a few dollars a month, while a full-featured system will obviously require more significant investment.

And the more sophisticated the software, the more challenging it can be to manage.

You will need to tailor your solution to meet not only your budget but also make it match your written mobile device policy.

You may want to consider enlisting a third party to provide mobile device management as they will likely be able to provide features a la carte so you can add or remove features as your needs change.

If so, you may be exposing yourself to serious risks you may not have even considered.

The most obvious risk is theft. Theft of mobile devices is skyrockeing.

Some cities have reported increases theft of 20 percent or more in the last year.

But what about excessive use, stupidity or fraud by an employee?

Mobile device management can mitigate these risks.

First, let’s look at the most obvious threat: a device that goes missing.

Mobile devices store important emails, documents, and contacts.

If these devices fall into the wrong hands, the consequences could be severe.

At its most basic, mobile device management allows you to locate a device and, if necessary, erase it either selectively or entirely.

For example, an employee reports a lost phone.

Your mobile device management software (or provider) can use the phone’s GPS to determine its last reported location.

Signs of concern with economy?

‘W

hen taxi cab drivers and school teachers start speculating in real estate, that’s when you know it’s an overheated market,” said a colleague of mine about a year before the 2008 real estate market crash.

He moved his positions over to apartments in anticipation of what was coming.

While it was a purely an anecdotal observation, his remarks seem almost prophetic as I sat down with him over lunch again recently to talk about the current market conditions. The back drop of that conversation is the structural problems with that U.S. economy.

U.S. households still have more debt than their annual incomes, with debt now at 103 percent of disposable income.

While that’s down from the 2007 high, it’s still above the 100 percent mark of 2002, which was a high mark and well above norms decades earlier.

Fueled by cheap credit, corporations have been borrowing more money in recent years adding debt at a 9.5 percent annualized rate since the third quarter of 2010 compared to 7.5 percent pre-crash.

Then there’s this pesky federal debt of ours.

Outside of debt held by the Social Security Trust Fund, federal debt has risen by roughly $7.3 trillion over the past six years, an increase of 140 percent over where it was then. The only sector that actually de-leveraged was the financial sector because it had to in order to survive.

Meanwhile, Chinese capital flowing into the Puget Sound region is a curious thing if not a signal of some kind. Could it be an indicator of what’s coming in the Chinese economy?

China has been propping up our economy to keep us consuming their products by buying our treasuries, which has the effect of keeping interest rates low for us. If that stops or slows, interest rates and inflation could go up here and that would

trigger another contraction. My colleague is concerned.

“When wealthy Chinese start buying houses and condos here sight unseen, their run is probably coming to an end,” he said.

If he’s right, then affordably priced apartments and discount retail remain appealing places to invest even though they’ve

Investors in the office sector and higher-end retail, with some exceptions, should play their hands cautiously even though the temptation with cheap debt and

Whether he’s right about the behavior of Chinese investors signaling a market adjustment is hard to say.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Announcements EVERETT — Snohomish County’s newest Walmart is expected to open in early September. The 90,000-squarefoot store across from the Everett Mall hired about 200 employees and was still looking to add another 20 to 30 to help with the upcoming holiday season. The newest location is at the former Top Foods supermarket at 1605 SE Everett Mall Way. This is the seventh Walmart in the county with the eighth expected to open in Monroe in November.

EDMONDS — The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual photo contest. The winning photo with photo credit will be featured on the 2015 Edmonds Chamber of Commerce Membership Plaque and Preferred Business Directory. All submissions must be received by Nov. 6. EVERETT — The Port of Everett has signed a new five-year lease with Eagle Home Mortgage and renewed three additional leases for its Waterfront Center facility, bringing the building to 70 percent occupied. The Port’s Waterfront Center opened for business in 2011, and is designed for marine-related services, office and retail users that support and revitalize the Craftsman District.

ARLINGTON — Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics is seeking businesses, organizations and vendors to participate in the 2014 Women’s Expo on Oct. 11 at Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington. EVERETT — The YMCA of Snohomish County has received 144 new basketballs, thanks to a donation from NBA Cares, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Spalding. The balls will be shared among the five YMCA of Snohomish County family branches and used for open gym, youth sports and camp programs.

EVERETT — Cannabis Cup, a twoday trade show and concert celebrating the cannabis culture and offering information, is being held for the first time in Everett on Sept. 6 and 7 at Comcast Arena. Previously held in Seattle, the event drew nearly 10,000 attendees from throughout the Pacific Northwest, and is expected to generate $2.3 million in economic impact for Snohomish County.

EVERETT — QFC has completed a $2.7 million remodel of the store at 2615 Broadway in Everett. To celebrate the re-opening, store management presented $500 donations to Volunteers of America and Boys & Girls Club of Everett.

The five-month long remodel included upgrades in the produce, deli, bakery and wine departments. The store opened in 1995 and received its last major improvement in 2003.

LYNNWOOD — Washington’s first Nestle Toll House Café by Chip opened at the Alderwood mall in Lynnwood The bakery serves freshly baked cookies, premium Nescafe Milano coffee, smoothies, crepes and other treats and snacks. The location is the 135th franchise.

LYNNWOOD — Edmonds Community College is one of nine colleges highlighted for its strategies to combat student loan defaults in a national study released last month. According to the study, key findings show the default rate for people who obtain a degree was 9 percent, but it was 27 percent for people who don’t. EVERETT — Frontier Commu-

nications Corporation has announced their partnership with the Tulalip Resort Casino to provide free Wi-Fi for the summer concert series that began in July.

Frontier had installed a temporary free Wi-Fi hotspot so the audience can share pictures, videos and tweets.

OLYMPIA — The Washington State Department of Commerce has announced a new revolving loan fund that will help increase small business access to credit through the Washington Small Business Credit Initiative. With the new Collateral Support Program, SSBCI funds will reduce banks’ credit risks and help programs developed by the state to use U.S. Small Business Administration loans to finance more businesses.

Good deeds BELLEVUE — Master Builders Career Connection will cease to operate this month. However, the foundation is distributing $85,150 in grants immediately and transferring $365,000 in assets to The Seattle Foundation in order to continue its legacy of providing scholarships, training and outreach to those interested and involved in the homebuilding industry.

LYNNWOOD — U.S. Bank employee volunteers helped to distribute new backpacks and school supplies for 84 children who reside at Mercy Housing in Lynnwood. The backpacks and school materials were supplied through collaboration between U.S. Bank and nonprofit Schoolhouse Supplies. More than 650 children in seven cities who reside in Mercy Housing rental developments benefited from the program.

Good deeds MONROE — Housing Hope held “An Evening at Adam’s for Monroe Family Village” on July 28 at Adam’s Northwest Bistro and Brewery in Monroe. The event was in support of the non-profit’s latest development, a 47-unit homeless and low-income housing project in Monroe. They raised $10,600. All of Adam’s Bistro staff donated their time and service for the evening.

Kudos EVERETT — Frontier Communications Corporation has announced that Ken Baldwin, general manager of Everett, recently received the Red Cross Snohomish County Chairman’s Award for his “incredible support and leadership.” The award was given by outgoing board chair Kim Buike. Baldwin has been a Snohomish County Red Cross board member for four years and is former philanthropy committee co-chair.
