HANK YOU for allowing Gateway the privilege of serving in our great community. Gateway is filled with people, just like you, who have a passion for helping one another. We believe that’s a huge part of why Gateway exists. Meeting the physical and spiritual needs in our community, region, and world is what drives us. We are not the perfect church. Gateway church and schools are made up of people learning to do life together, and sometimes that gets messy because life can get a bit messy! But we have learned a “better together story,” and if you are not already part of another faith community, then please receive this as an open invitation to visit ours. When you walk through the doors, you will enter a friendly environment devoted to making your experience exciting and relevant regardless of your age. On Sundays, there are gatherings for the whole family that include several different worship styles. (Check gatewayfellowship.com for more info.) All Sunday gatherings (8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 11 a.m. Español, The 5) feature the same relevant message. Casual dress is the norm for all gatherings, including for those on the leadership and ministry teams. My favorite “Sunday best” is generally jeans and an open-collared shirt—and I live in my Chuck Taylors. After each gathering (which lasts about seventy minutes), my favorite time is “lobby time,” when I get to make new friends, so stop on by and introduce yourself. our years ago, a question was raised at Gateway Fellowship: How do we, as a church, give back to our community? Out of that discussion came the idea for Operation Day of Hope, and through hard work, long hours, and lots and lots of prayer, Gateway Fellowship members are now putting plans into place for their fifth annual Operation Day of Hope. This day features a host of free services, including, but not limited to, clothing, haircuts, health screenings, basic dental care, legal services, social services help, spiritual help, spa services, hot meals, and family portraits. Through the generosity of industry professionals and hundreds of volunteer hours from church and community members, all services provided are complimentary. Due to the limited space and time, all services are provided on firstcome, first-served basis. Spanish-speaking translators will also be on site. David Fischer, Gateway Fellowship Community Pastor, says, “For me, Operation Day of Hope expresses one of the core principles of God’s Word: ‘We are blessed to be a blessing.’ We have been given so much, and we want to help those in our community who are struggling to make ends meet in these hard times. Providing a variety of free services helps people in a tangible way, and even if it is only for one day, it says to people, ‘someone cares, someone loves me.’ That is priceless.” The day is full of stories that touch the hearts of the volunteers. Whether the story of the sixteen-year-old boy, who, due to circumstances beyond his control, only had the tattered clothes on his back and was a little hesitant to ask for help. Or the father who just knew that we wouldn’t have his or his son’s larger sizes in clothing. And yet, through generous donations, they each walked out with several pieces of clothing along with a bag of food after eating a hot meal in the Fellowship Hall. Or the story of the lady who walked through the front doors without hope of finding anything and walked out those same doors with a haircut, a manicure, and various contacts to assist her with 6

her medical concerns. Or the family of seven that spoke little English, yet their Spanishspeaking guide was able to walk them through the campus, collecting food, clothing, and even a professional family photo. There are no judgments or expectations this day, just helping hands, smiles, and opportunities for hope, and prayer if requested. In 2013, over one thousand people from Kitsap and the surrounding counties received complimentary services. Over 450 volunteers and many businesses and service agencies generously donated time and items. The Clothes Closet saw over eight thousand items of clothing given away, and approximately 550 bags of groceries were given out at the Food Pantry. This year, volunteers will be lead by Sandy Cato, who stated, “I have already seen God’s hand at work and am truly blessed to have the opportunity to serve as the Event Coordinator. I have a fantastic leadership team, and we’re really looking forward to seeing the miracles and blessings that God has in store for all involved!” Day of Hope happens every October. This year it is Saturday, October 18th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Gateway Fellowship in Poulsbo. Gateway Fellowship is a vibrant regional church based in Poulsbo. The church is passionate about God and serving him through worship, small groups, ministry teams, and education. Young Families
W
e understand the demands that come as you are trying to raise little ones or simply getting to know people since you’ve graduated from college. We focus on young families and young adults by providing events, resources, and connection spots to help you along the way. Sometimes you just need to get out of the routine of the daily grind, and so we’ve created some fun events where you can hang out with your friends and family and meet new people. Some of the events we put on throughout the year are: • Fall—Harvest Party • Winter—Sledding at Hurricane Ridge, Roller-skating • Spring—Board Game Night • Summer—Camping trip, BBQ We also offer classes throughout the year to help parents be more effective at raising their kids and help couples develop healthy marriages. These are great spots to meet new people, share experiences, and learn more about how to navigate this special time of life.
Growth Groups
H
ave you ever thought about going to church but wondered, “What do I have in common with those people?” And if you ever actually tried a church out, you might have experienced the “it-seems-like-everyone-knows-everyone-else-and-I-don’t” moment. At Gateway, we get that and have what we think is a pretty good solution called “growth groups.” Growth groups are the centerpiece of Gateway’s fellowship. As our church grows larger on Sundays, we grow smaller during the week in groups to meet new friends and to learn more about ourselves and God. We feel that this is so important that we encourage everyone who attends Gateway to be involved in a group a couple of seasons each year. Gateway offers a vast array of different groups. Some are continuous, while others last around eleven weeks. Our military community has appreciated that they can fully participate in a group for a season before leaving for their tour of duty. Many are based on topics, such as finances, marriage, Christian discipleship, or specific books of the Bible, while others are simply focused on shared common interests, like cooking, football, or quilting for charity. Our hope with all of our groups is that you will start to cultivate relationships that will help you know that you are cared for. Jocelyn Horton, a navy wife and mother of two, has attended several growth groups, including Play Café; Parks & Play Group; Growing Healthy Marriages; and Potluck, Games, & God. She says, “I started attending Gateway and joined my first growth group about a year and a half ago. At that time, I was in a place in life where I felt very alone and distant from God. My husband was on deployment, and I was battling postpartum depression and behavior issues with my then three-year-old. I couldn’t go to friends houses, or even the park, because he would hit other children and act out, and we would have to go back home. I felt very isolated. When I joined Play Café, I found a group of woman who prayed for me during this time and gave me advice concerning his behavior and embraced us with Christian love. These women have ultimately become some of my best friends and have helped me to grow in my faith. And I would not have them or know where I would be today without them and Play Café. . . . “Growth groups are intimate. You can meet people in large settings, but in growth groups you can meet lasting friends and get to know new people who might share the same interest as you. Spending time with other Christian couples has also benefited my marriage. My husband and I both attended the Potluck, Games, & God group. It was a time where we could get together and meet other couples while our children were looked after. It was a nice break in the week for us to get out and have some adult time.” If you want to try out one of these groups, we’re just a click away! Why Christian Education? Because Results Matter
C
ardus Education published the result of a national survey that measured the results of Christian, Private, and Public education: “Compared to their public school and nonreligious private school peers; Christian school graduates are generous, outwardlyfocused individuals who stabilize their communities by their uncommon commitment to their families, their churches, and larger society. Similarly, graduates of Christian schools are more generous with their time, participating far more than their peers both in service trips for relief and development and in mission trips.” Their findings also showed that they tend to feel better equipped to deal with problems and experience a greater sense of direction in life. The graduates from Gateway Christian Schools confirm these findings. They excel in both academics and in their chosen careers. Over the past few years, 97% of our high school seniors have enrolled in two- or four-year colleges. The other 3% have pursued careers in the ministry or the US Military after graduation.

Gateway Christian Schools District Update
T
his has been a tremendous year for Gateway Christian Schools, and I am eager to share it with you. In the last two years we have experienced a number of changes. Even in the short period of time I’ve been here, I’ve seen Gateway Christian Schools move forward—at a pace nobody anticipated. In July of 2012, Gateway Schools acquired Crosspoint Academy from CRISTA Ministries. This move tripled the size of our student population and generated a great deal of interest from our community in the schools. Let me share some other key changes with you:
• A while back we were approached about adding the Arrowsmith System to our school, a program designed to help students who have certain learning disabilities. There was a great deal of research supporting the work accomplished through the Arrowsmith System, but no school in our area offered the program to students. After securing trained teachers, our first classes were offered in September of 2012. The results have been amazing—amazing enough that we’ve expanded the program to both campuses this past year. We’re expecting further expansion for 2014–2015.
• We have begun to recruit international students, which is increasing the school’s population. We expect to have twice as many international students next year as compared to this year. In 2013–2014, our secondary school grew by 20 percent. This year, it appears we will grow again.
• We continue to build our concurrent credit program. This allows students to remain in high school while getting college credits for some of the courses they are taking. This year we added Oceanography and Meteorology to our offerings, which has expanded our science offerings significantly.
• Three new bus routes have also made it easier for families to consider Gateway Christian Schools. We will continue to think about expanding these routes as needed.
In addition to these changes, I could talk at length about what our kids do in class every day. Their accomplishments as growing learners are numerous. Many of the students are also excelling in athletics. Our girls won the state championship in soccer this year! The opportunities to learn outside the classroom are truly significant. Finally—and this is true of both campuses—what hasn’t changed is that at Gateway Christian Schools you will find caring individuals who are devoted to working with families to help children. Our philosophy is to try to treat each student like he or she is our own. This attention begins with the interview process. Come and visit to see what a fun experience school can be! Gateway Christian Schools Elementary & Secondary Programs ELEMENTARY Kindergarten thru 5th Grade | Poulsbo – Kindergarten - 6th Grade | Bremerton A safe, fun environment encourages educational growth and experience. Our intentionally smaller class sizes ensure individual attention for all of our students. Our teachers provide the fundamentals for a successful academic career and make learning a joy. Students get the personal attention and care they need to succeed and grow. Spiritual education is enhanced through weekly chapels. The elementary students sing songs, pray as a group, and listen to speakers from local churches. Students learn about needs throughout the world by taking part in fundraisers. Students have sold handmade hats, CDs, baked goods, goldfish, and more to raise money for the Sluys/Anderson Primary School in Sakila, Tanzania.
MIDDLE SCHOOL 6th–8th Grade | Bremerton Campus Here students develop skills and prepare for the rigors of high school. We keep our class sizes regulated so we can provide attention to students in the formative years between elementary and high school. We focus on the core subjects and skills that will prepare students for high school. In order to provide a well-rounded school experience, we augment those core subjects through modern and varied elective options such as computer science, yearbook, health, band, Spanish, and physical education. Spiritual development is fostered through our biblically integrated curriculum and weekly chapels, which include student-lead worship and relevant speakers to challenge and encourage our students. Local area pastors also lead a Spiritual Emphasis Week twice a year to allow students to dig deep, reflect, and focus on how God can use them.
HIGH SCHOOL 9th–12th Grade | Bremerton Campus We give our students a significant head start on the requirements for college and life. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors have the opportunity to take college-level courses to prepare for higher learning. We currently offer the following concurrent courses on our Bremerton Campus: Communications 194; English 101, 102, and 105; Theatre 107; and Speech 201. Students receive not only high school credits, but also transcript credits from participating universities. Additional electives include: speech, technology (yearbook, digital media, computer animation, and computer applications), physical education (weight training and health), fine and performing arts (art, photography, band/choir, and performance company), and foreign languages. We believe it is important for students to develop character through community engagement. Secondary students are required to serve within our community by completing community service hours each school year. We also offer global opportunities for engagement. Our students, faculty, and staff have traveled to countries such as Ukraine, Guatemala, and Israel on missionary and educational trips.
Athletic Programs Our athletic programs offer physical and social instruction outside the classroom environment. Our well-respected teams have been very successful both on and off the field. Students graduate prepared to advance in competitive sports programs. he Arrowsmith Program at Gateway Christian Schools positions each child to reach his or her highest potential. The program identifies cognitive weaknesses and prescribes a specific, individualized learning profile designed to strengthen needed cognitive abilities.
The Arrowsmith Program considers a learning dysfunction the result of a specific brain area that is weaker than other areas. Neuroscience has established that different areas of the brain work together in functional systems to accomplish complex mental activities, such as reading or writing or numeracy. Each brain area has a very specific and critical role to play in the learning process. A weakness in just one area can affect a number of different learning processes. Students who have experienced failure, or who have significantly struggled to achieve success, enjoy a newfound sense of accomplishment in the Gateway Arrowsmith Program, working with their peers as they move through the levels of their individualized programs. Many students who are struggling in multiple subjects greatly benefit from the program, which allows them to effectively and competently handle academic curriculum. WHAT THE ARROWSMITH PROGRAM PROVIDES • A suite of cognitive programs comprising over twelve thousand discrete levels of computerized, auditory, and pencil and paper exercises that are refined and updated regularly • A detailed assessment that identifies your student’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses • An individualized learning profile for each student based on his or her own assessment • An individualized program of cognitive exercises • The Arrowsmith Record of Program, which allows teachers to maintain regular quantitative and qualitative data • Monthly analysis of the data that compares student progress to Arrowsmith benchmark goals for each exercise • Regular communication between the parent(s) and teacher for student progress • A year-end assessment that measures student progress in each of the cognitive areas addressed • A year-end learning profile based on improvements in the specific cognitive areas • An updated program of cognitive exercises for each year Students in the Arrowsmith Program at Gateway Christian School find themselves in an environment of acceptance, warmth, and compassion, becoming part of a community with a common goal: strengthening weak areas of the brain. Gateway Students A
t Gateway Students our purpose is to see students live out the Jesus-centered mission in their everyday lives. We have several regular environments where this takes place.
Wednesdays 6:30–8:30 p.m. i n the Pearson Fellowship Hall: Every week, middle school and high school students gather together to have a good time, see their friends, meet new ones, and learn about God’s plan for their lives. Our goal is to give students an environment to worship God and hear the Bible taught in a creative, relevant way! Sundays 9:30–10:45 a.m. in the Gateway Gym: Our goal is to be a place where middle school students can learn about God in a way that is on their level and relevant to where they are in life. We then transition into discussion groups where we learn to apply the Bible in safe settings with well-trained leaders and friends on the same journey. Karen Cooper, our director, has a degree in early learning education and thirty-plus years of experience working with children and their families. Ms. Cooper has been on staff with the Gateway Learning Center program for nearly three decades.
Georgia’s House is a homeless shelter in Bremerton, WA that helps homeless women and displaced women and their children. It is operated by the Weaver Foundation. The Weaver Foundation was built on the ideals and inspirations of the woman for whom the shelter is named; Georgia Mattson was a caring, giving woman who believed in diversity and acceptance of each person she met. Upon Georgia’s death, a group of people from different walks in life got together and decided to continue her work in the community.

he story is one of life change. But it didn’t begin that way. A student was testing for entrance into Gateway Christian Schools and kept insisting, “I hate teachers, I hate teachers.” The repeated comment began to concern the teacher, and while exploring why the student felt such a level of hatred toward teachers, it happened. . . The student blurted out, “Every teacher has given up on me.” True or not, the teacher reaffirmed her love and commitment to the student: “I won’t ever give up on you. Jesus has never given up on me, and I won’t give up on you.” Six months later, the same student told the teacher, “I love you.” In another story of change, a recent graduate of Crosspoint, after attending university for five weeks, wrote back to the administration and faculty: “I miss you all dearly. Especially at a secular university, and it feels like everywhere I turn is a reminder of that secularity.” She continued, “I write this letter to you. You honestly do not get thanked enough. . .you are using each class session as an opportunity to invest in students’ lives.” She spoke of how, before attending Gateway, she had dreamed of becoming a leader and yet didn’t want to serve people and of how she “primarily wanted to further [her] own interests.” But the story didn’t end there. “God orchestrated the change, causing me to meet people who were living servants, active leaders, and true men and women of integrity.” And finally, she closed her letter with “Thank you for your service. You are impacting students. I’m blessed to say one of those students was me.” “More Than Bricks” is all about changing lives. It’s about discipleship, commitment, and legacy—seeing students educated and built up in their faith and making a difference in the world. “More Than Bricks” is about the mission Jesus has called us to engage in. “More Than Bricks” is about a unique opportunity to impact the life of every student, every day. Missions at Gateway Fellowship LIFE CHANGE “Jenny” was homeless in Kitsap County, living in her car and struggling to pay for the state park camping fees. She went to some of the free community meals provided by churches in the Poulsbo area and got help from Fishline (a local food bank with many services), but things were tough. “Jenny” met some people at the Gateway weekly community lunch who befriended her. Gateway, along with other churches, helped a little by paying for some expenses. As time went by, she was able to purchase a trailer to live in. She began to help serving the Saturday meals. As her situation improved, “Jenny” continued helping with the meals, reaching out to help others as she had been helped. Today, “Jenny” is serving in other ways at the church, including an online ministry that shares the message of Jesus with people all over the world. She would say that she has “been blessed to be a blessing.” BACKGROUND The concept of being “blessed to be a blessing” actually comes out of the Bible. In Genesis 12:1–3 (NASB), the story is told of how God made a promise to Abraham. God told him, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed” Most Bible scholars agree that this verse about all the families of the earth being blessed through Abraham is a clear reference to the coming of Jesus. He truly has been, and is, a blessing to billions on our planet. When Jesus left the earth, He gave His followers a final, summary command about how to spread this blessing. It is recorded in Matthew 28:18–20 (ERV): “So he came to them and said, ‘ All authority in heaven and on earth is given to me. So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have told you to do. You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will continue with you until the end of time.’” This command, known as the Great Commission, tells us that we are to “make followers” of Jesus in all the world and “teach them to obey” all that Jesus commanded. This raises the question, “What did Jesus command”? Volumes could be written on that topic! But thankfully, Jesus summarized things for us. In Matthew’s gospel, we read these words (Matt. 22:36–40, NASB): “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ And He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets” (emphasis added). So, followers of Jesus are to be first of all worshipers of the one true God. Secondly, we are to love our neighbors. That love can take many forms. Each church must define what this command means for them. Knowing that we can’t do everything, the Gateway Fellowship leadership has tried to narrow our focus. SPECIFIC FOCUS OF OUR WORK LOCALLY, we have three major emphasis: • Benevolence—We help meet very real needs of people in our community who need assistance with rent, utilities, gas vouchers, lodging, travel, etc. We probably get a dozen requests a week, and we help as much as we can. • Community Meals—Gateway is part of a larger organization of churches in North Kitsap known as FaithliNK (see http://nkfaithlink. blogspot.com and https://www.facebook.com/northkitsapfaithlink). FaithliNK’s goal is to have a hot meal served every night of the month somewhere in North Kitsap. We are about halfway there.

Gateway’s role in this effort has evolved into two parts. First, a monthly First Friday Community Meal served in our Pearson Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. We usually have about fifty to sixty guests and fifteen volunteers and have meals delivered to another fifty or so folks, including kids at Coffee Oasis. We also serve a lunch every Saturday year round, helping eighty to ninety people make their food dollars stretch a bit further. Between these two meals, we serve an estimated six thousand meals per year. We trust this is truly a blessing to many. 3. Operation Day of Hope—For the last four years, Gateway has held a one-day event offering numerous free services for any who need them. This October 18, we’ll be doing our 5th annual ODOH on the campus.
In addition to these major emphases, we’ve also helped with projects like: • Starting a ministry for pregnant teens and single mothers to help them gain life skills • Providing backpacks and school supplies for 150 foster kids each summer • Running Royal Family KIDS Camp for foster kids for twenty consecutive summers • Putting in a large generator at Hostmark Apartments to heat their main building in case of power loss • Helping the City of Poulsbo with events such as the Viking Fest Road Race and the planting of flowers • Helping Fishline with their mail drive food collection
REGIONALLY, we have focused mainly on • Fighting human trafficking by partnering with local agencies • Addressing issues facing the American family • Hosting prayer events on our campus GLOBALLY, we have narrowed our focus for the sake of really making a difference. We realize that we cannot do everything that needs to be done in the world, so we’ve chosen to focus our efforts on three ethnolinguistic groups that have • No viably reproducible indigenous church • Little or no access to the Good News about Jesus • No complete Bible in their language We are partnering with others as we focus on helping three “unreached people groups” in Senegal, Spain, and India see a viable indigenous church raised up. To accomplish that, we have • Helped train Indian pastors in the use of oral Bible stories to share the Good News in areas where literacy rates are low and there is no Bible translation done. • Partnered with an African church to build a wall around a community school to both bless them and to build bridges of trust so that the Good News can be received openly. • Hosted students from Spain in our homes for three to four weeks in the summer to let them see how followers of Jesus live. Many of these kids have never seen anything but an atheist home, and they are shocked by the love and closeness of our families. In addition to our work with these three “unreached people groups,” we are giving about 350 children in Tanzania access to a top notch education through our Sakila Sponsorship program. Many people from Gateway sponsor kids and get to hear from them about progress being made. CONCLUSION Much more is being done, but space does not allow for more detail. Bottom line, we are “blessed to be a blessing,” and we hope that the result of all that we do will be more and more people hearing and understanding the Good News that Jesus has to offer. Gateway Kids
At Gateway Kids, the goal is to create an environment where kids are loved, cared for, and continually learning about God.
“Fun, engaging, and genuine” are the three words Shelly Sundberg, Gateway’s children’s pastor, uses to describe Gateway Kids. “We want kids talking the whole way home about what happened in their class.” At Gateway, we believe that God wants a relationship with each one of us, and that includes children! We desire to bring children closer to Him through engaging activities, lessons, and relationships built with adults who care about them. At Gateway Kids, the goal is to create an environment where kids are loved, cared for, and continually learning about God. Our leaders work hard to connect with the kids and build relationships with them. The oldest Gateway Kids volunteer is eighty, and the youngest is ten, creating a multi-generational environment for kids to grow in. We work with people who love children and use their talents to make each class special. We want the children to leave knowing God loves them, as do the leaders they have just spent time with. “Our desire is to help bring kids closer to Jesus. We love to partner with families in this process by providing an exciting and quality program on Sundays, offering mid-week small groups for kids, a Family Fun Day at Easter time, and vacation Bible school and kids camp in the summer,” explains Shelly Sundberg. “Gateway Kids is a loving and safe environment where my kids learn about God in very creative and fun ways. My children, Gavin and Addy, love coming because the environment is so hands-on. They interact with great leaders who really care about them.” —Jaime Schmidt, parent

Priscilla “Nicki”Orcutt The Bremerton Foodline and the Kitsap community lost a very compassionate friend of abandoned animals and disadvantaged populations with the death of Priscilla “Nicki”Orcutt. She passed away early in 2014 with a celebration of life in late spring. Nikki was generous with her time and compassionate about her charities. Gateway Español Gateway Español is a group of Spanish speaking believers that comes together on a weekly basis to worship and hear God’s word in their heart language. There are many people in Kitsap County who struggle to fully engage in an English gathering; because of that, Gateway has started this group so that people can now grow in their faith with full understanding. Meeting in the Munger Chapel at 11 a.m. every week, Gateway Español worships with a band and hears from the Word. We meet at the same time as one of the English Sunday gatherings, and children are invited to join all of the Gateway Kids gatherings. Pastor César Salmán often delivers a message similar to the one heard in our English gatherings. This brings Gateway Español into unification with the rest of the believers at Gateway Fellowship. Gateway Español consists of almost 80% new believers. With new guests almost every week, it is a growing population learning about God. Meeting on Friday nights in smaller groups has given people the opportunity to grow in leadership, discuss the message in a more personal setting, and ask questions that deepen their faith. One Saturday a month, we also have a time for the women of Gateway Español come together for breakfast and time in God’s Word. With more and more people needing a place like Gateway to connect to, you’ll find that this group of believers passionately embraces anyone who comes through the door. Loving on people and helping them feel accepted is the heart of this ministry. Gathering around each other through hard times and good has created a family atmosphere. All are welcome as we gather, grow, and go together as Gateway Español.
Kitsap Rescue Mission exists to assist the homeless and poor of Kitsap County as they work toward restoration of body, mind, and spirit through Christ centered programs. We also provide a Fresh Start Program Fresh Start is a program that offers individuals a place where they can focus on remove the obstacles to their complete recovery.
