THE TRACK Sprint boat tracks are man-made courses approximately 14 feet wide that hold 3 to 4 feet of water. The driver and navigator have to race against the clock as they maneuver through the watery course built around a maze of islands. The Port Angeles track is designed to be the fastest in the sprint boat circuit, allowing speeds up to 100 miles per hour in some spots. While there is only one track, there are different course routes. The driver and navigator are given a map the night before the race, which shows the route they have to take. They have to memorize the course, which they’ll be traveling through at 90 miles per hour. They do not get to practice before the qualification runs. The driver must rely on the navigator, who communicates directions through hand signals. Mere seconds and accuracy count!

Port Angeles to host world championships STORY

BY

JIM DEFORD

The inaugural American Sprint Boat World Championships will be held at the Extreme Sports Park in Port Angeles in 2015. The ASB World Championships has been in the initial planning stages since the inception of American Sprint Boat Racing in 2013, according to Dan Morrison and Doug Hendrickson, members of the ASBR executive team. “In addition to elevating sprint boat racing in the United States to the professional level, it has always been a goal of the ASBR to create an affordable world class championship for all the countries that participate in our quickly growing sport,” said Morrison, driver of Port Angeles-based Wicked Racing #10. “Our team is focused on providing the most affordable, professionally managed series in the world and announcing our plans for the 2015 World Championship at this time is essential for the race teams to properly plan for these events,” added Hendrickson, driver of local Wicked Racing #01. “Careful planning with the racers, track owners and fans in mind is paramount to a successful World event,” Morrison said. “The ASBR executive team has been discussing these issues with racers and teams over the past year and they all agree that the key to a successful world

event is to provide venues that showcase the racers and their sponsors as well as make opportunities available for world sponsors and provide tested tracks and facilities for the race teams and fans.” “While we had the opportunity to host a world event in 2014, the ASBR executive team’s goal is always to do it right, or not at all,” Hendrickson said. “We have had the experience that any new track has bugs to work out, and to work those out at a world championship will never, ever occur at an ASBR sanctioned event.” The inaugural ASB World Championship will take place in the summer of 2015 with tracks and dates yet to be announced. It is expected that sprint boat and jet sprint racers from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States will compete under the ASBR rules package for the ultimate prize to be crowned World Champion in their class, Morrison said. The ASB World Championship will not be sanctioned by the Union Internationale Motonautique, which is boat racing’s equivalent of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, the organization that governs most of wheeled motor sports in the world. With the ASB hosting and sanctioning this World Championship a significant amount of red tape and

money for the tracks and the racers will be eliminated, easing their costs as they travel across the globe to compete in a world-class event. Brief history of American sprint boat racing WRITTEN

BY

JIM DEFORD

AND

JEFF SCHLAGEL

Sprint boat, an offshoot of marathon river racing, started in New Zealand in 1970. Marathon racing is a water-based motorsport that uses jet propulsion instead of propellers. Jet propulsion is also the choice for sprint boat racing, because it allows boats to race in water three feet deep and navigate tight corners far better than propellerpowered boats. In the early 1980s race enthusiasts came up with the idea of racing jet boats with a navigator directing the driver. A track was laid out around some islands in a river creating a short course in a small area, so unlike marathon boats that race by and are gone in a few seconds, spectators could watch each boat run its complete course. The sport quickly took off and moved on to Australia, where the idea of digging a track developed. At first, the racers dug the track alongside a river and channeled the water into the track from the river. After the race was over, the earth was filled back in and the track was history. Jet sprinting first came to the States in 1990. At first, racing was held in ponds and lakes. The track was set with floating buoys. In 1997, the first in-ground track was dug in Marsing, Idaho, on the Snake River. These days all tracks are semi-permanent tracks.

American Sprint Boat Racing, LLC and the American Sprint Boat Pro Series were formed in 2013 to take sprint boat racing in America to the next level for serious fans, serious sponsors and television. The ASB Pro Series has established a relationship with MAVTV, an up-and-coming motorsports network owned by Lucas Oil. MAVTV covered the first season of the ASB Pro Series and is looking forward to more in 2014 and beyond. To view MAVTV, visit www.mavtv.com. ASB Pro Racing Series will run races at three tracks in 2014. Webb’s Slough in St. John, Wash., is the longest established active track in the United States. St. John is a small town located just 50 miles west of Lewiston, Idaho. This small, tight track has been hosting sprint boat races since 2007 and is both a fan and racer favorite. Thousands of fans fill the grassy slopes of the Slough at every race. Fans start showing up at 7 a.m. on race day for the best seats. Racers love giving the fans a show to remember at Webb’s Slough. The Extreme Sports Park in Port Angeles has been hosting races since Sept. 17, 2011, and is the home track of American Sprint Boat Racing. The first race filled local motels, hotels, restaurants, parking lots and grocery stores and created lines at gas stations.

The ASB Pro Racing Series consists of three classes: Modified, 400 and Unlimited. Classes are determined by engine size, among other allowable hardware. Modified boat engines may be up to 368 ci, 400s up to 412 ci, and Unlimiteds, as the name implies, are unlimited. These boats approach straight-line speeds of up to 90-plus miles per hour and, with their incredible turning capabilities, can pull 3-7 Gs in the tightest corners.

Zoom in on our local teams TNT JEEPERS CREEPERS #99

This year there will be three teams that hail from the Olympic Peninsula competing in the ASB Pro Series at Extreme Sports Park. In keeping with the camarderie and family orientation of the sport, the teams are, indeed, members of the same family.

Driver Tim Cummings, Taylor’s uncle, may not be racing in the August pro series races, but his family will be represented by his son Dillon Cummings driving TNT #99 Jeepers Creepers, a Modified class boat. The Cummings family began racing eight years ago when Tim went to the races with the Morrisons, another local racing family. He bought a boat that weekend and has never looked back.

SEQUIM’S HOMETOWN TEAMS TNT LIVE WIRE #2 Live Wire #2 driver Paul Gahr, a bridge technician for

the Hood Canal Bridge, has been racing for seven years. Paul likes sprint boat racing because it is a competition that involves the family. He also loves the enthusiasm of the fans. Among the highlights of his racing career are winning twice in Port Angeles and holding a checkered flag with both his son and daughter in the boat. This year Paul’s 18-year-old daughter, Taylor Gahr, will serve as navigator for her father. Taylor begins college in the fall and is working at the Black Bear Restaurant this summer. “My uncle Tim [Cummings] started racing, and my family went to watch. Seeing how much fun it was, my dad decided to get a boat,” Taylor added to her father’s comments on her family’s racing interest. Photo provided by ASB The Gahr family has been racing for seven years. Taylor Navigator Taylor Gahr, holding the trophy, stands with her father Paul has been navigating for three. Gahr, the driver of Live Wire No. 02. Taylor enjoys the adrenaline rush, the big family of racers and the friends she has made. The highlight of her racing career so far was holding the checkered flag with her father in 2011, the first year that she navigated for him. Photo provided by ASB The Gahrs took 2008 Rookie of the Year and have TNT Jeepers Creepers #99 driver Dillon Cummings and his mother Teri placed in the top three ever since. >>>continued on Page 9 have been racing as a team for five years.

Dillon Cummings is as competitive as his father and likes to take the driver’s seat. He was drawn to the sport when his father began racing. He loved working with the crew and couldn’t wait to race on his own. He began competing when he was 16 and has been racing now for six years. “What I like most about the sport is that all the teams are competitors on the course and like family off the course!” he says. He loves the competitiveness, the friendships he has made, and the family unity from participating in sprint boat racing. The highlight of his career was winning the 2010 National Championship in the Modified class at age 18 making him youngest racer to have ever won. Teri Cummings, Dillon’s proud mother will be his navigator. Mother and son have been racing as a team for five years. She fell in love with the sport after attending the races at Woodland, Wash., with family.

wanted to drive one. He has been racing for eight years with the same navigator, his stepdaughter Cara McGuire. Dan enjoys the challenges of the sport, the intensity and concentration a driver needs at the speeds the boat travels and “the brain game,” having to memorize the course the night before the race. Winning the championships in the Modified class in his second year of racing and winning in 2011 in the Unlimited class are among the highlights of his racing career. Dan enjoys racing with Cara and how the sport has brought his family and extended family together. Cara McGuire, a first-grade teacher, finds sprint boat racing to be a lot like teaching, exciting, unpredictable and a whole lot of fun. Cara agrees with her stepfather, “The adrenaline rush and the friendly, competitive nature are what make this sport different,” she says. She has been navigating for Dan for eight years. Her parents encouraged her to give the sport a try. She particularly likes the camaraderie among racers. Highlights for her include making it into the finals in her first event night race and winning the National Finals in Port Angeles, her hometown. Having sat out last season due to boat and motor troubles, both McGuire and Morrison are excited to be back in the hunt. Their first victory this season was in their first event this year at Saint John, Washington.

Show & Shine on Aug. 8 and Sept. 5

Nonprofits supported by ESP

The Port Angeles Downtown Association will sponsor the Sprint Boat Show & Shine and Tech events this year on Friday, Aug. 8 and Friday, Sept. 5. The event will take place 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Laurel Street between First and Front streets. Brad and John from 92.9 KISM will be bringing their show and the station’s 92 Days of Summer registration event to this year’s Show & Shine. The public will have a chance to register to become one of the 74 qualifiers in KISM’s giveaway. (Visit www. kism.com for more details.) There will also be other prizes awarded at the event, including a VIP package for a stay at the Red Lion Hotel Port Angeles. “This is the radio program’s first time on the Peninsula,” said Kelie Morrison, one of the event organizers. “We’re really excited to have them.” This event is when Race teams sign in, register and receive the course routes. Organizers expect 21 boats to compete this year. The tech inspector goes through the boats to ensure that they meet the standards and safety rules for racing. The fans also have the chance to meet the drivers and navigators and take pictures of the teams and boats before they go in the water.
