The Roanoke Inn has witnessed a lot of change since we opened in 1914.

Horseback was the principal mode of transportation and patrons came to visit via ferry from the Leschi neighborhood in Seattle. Two World Wars were fought, abolitionist policies have come and gone, great depressions were weathered, and floating bridges were constructed to support the growth of automobiles. Both radio and television and now the evolution of the computer generation has changed many things. But no matter what the Inn has witnessed, the Rowy has always been the community’s extended living room to discuss all the topics of daily importance.

COMING UP

Fun in the sun: Events for August Mid-summer brings a variety of arts and entertainment events to the Eastside – and a couple of big ones elsewhere, too.

Here's a quick look at some fun things to do from this weekend through Labor Day. First up is the biggest event by far on the Eastside — the multi-arts-and-craft fairs in downtown Bellevue. Three fairs will bring 300,000 to the downtown core over the July 25-27 weekend. Here's a snapshot of each:

BAM ARTSfair Bellevue's oldest arts fair takes place at Bellevue Square and the Bellevue Arts Museum.

For more than 60 years, the BAM ARTSfair has been drawing artists and art lovers to downtown Bellevue.

With over 300 exhibiting artists, both emerging and wellknown, BAM ARTSfair is one the region's largest gatherings and an opportunity to acquire art directly from the makers.

The fair features thousands of original artworks, including painting, sculpture, fashion, and jewelry. In addition, the museum will be free to visitors during the weekend event.

6th Street Fair Also bringing art and artists to the downtown will be the 6th Street Fair, produced by the Bellevue Downtown

Association. More than 130 artists will display their works in an open-air showcase of sculpture, jewelry, home décor, wood and glass work, fabrics and more. The fair is located at Bellevue Galleria, Northeast Sixth Street and 106th Avenue Northeast.

Bellevue Festival of Arts The third event is the Bellevue Festival of the Arts, which will have more than 150 Northwest and national artists, including several from the Eastside. The festival will be located at the intersection of Bellevue Way Northeast and Northeast Eighth Street, directly across from Bellevue Square.

Ballet Bellevue Ballet Bellevue will present Giselle on July 26-27. The professional chamber ballet company, which has been part of the Eastside since 1995, will give two evening performances at The Theatre at Meydenbauer Center: 8 p.m. Saturday, July 26 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27.

Nadia Iozzo, who has performed with Ballet Bellevue and Kansas City Ballet, will dance the lead role of Giselle.

Kirkland Classic Car Show

Kirkland Summerfest, the city’s premiere summer festival of art, music, food and family fun on the waterfront, is scheduled for Aug. 8-10. The city's largest festival features three days of visual and performing arts, over 50 performances, spectator sports, family rides, and entertainment, over 150 vendors and food trucks on the streets of downtown. The event is expected to draw 50,000 people.

Kirkland continues the busy weekend with the 12th Annual Kirkland Classic Car Show that will get going at 8 a.m. on July 27 and continue to 4 p.m. at Marina Park and downtown Kirkland streets. Approximately 450 cars are expected to be on display, so many that the event will hand out 64 trophies.

Taste of the Valley Chefs from restaurants operated by John Howie and Tom Douglas will join celebrated cooks from many of the top rated bistros on the Eastside at Jubilee Farm in Carnation on July 26 to prepare a feast for the annual Taste of the Valley.

The list of participating restaurants and vendors includes The Herb Farm, The Fall City Roadhouse, Copperleaf at Cedarbrook, Wildfin and Beecher’s Handmade Cheeses.

Summer is the perfect season for reading, whether you’re on vacation or lounging in the backyard. But with so many books, where do you start?

Scene caught up with four Eastside authors to find out what’s on their summer reading list — and what book is fresh out of their word processors.

Kirkland resident and New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Stella Cameron has over 14 million copies of her books in print. She writes in several genres: mystery, contemporary romance, paranormal, historical romance and romantic suspense.

“At the top of my reading list (already in progress) is ‘The Silkworm’ by Robert Galbraith,” Cameron tells us. Next up, she adds, is “Waiting for Wednesday” by Nicci French.

Cameron is now turning her own pen to mysteries “This writing business is only for the foolish or the addicted – or both,” Cameron says. “I’m embarking on the British mystery career I’ve wanted for far too long.”

She recently sold the initial two books in the Alex Duggins series to British publisher Severn House and the first, “Cold,” comes out in January. That will be followed by “Out Comes the Evil.”

Cameron is known for using her English background to add tension and allure to her stories. The book notes to “Cold” describes it as “atmospheric, deeply character and relationship driven, revealing the power of old secrets to twist the present.”

Robert Dugoni, of Bellevue, is another New York Times best-selling author. A lawyer, his six novels feature an attorney, five of them the popular David Sloan character.

With all his writing, he still finds much to read. “I’ve just read ‘The Divinity of the Republic.’ “a great book about James Garfield’s aborted presidency. Incredible insight into the man, and that period in history.”

Also this summer, Dugoni has read “The Marian” by Andy Weir, “again, another terrific premise and read.”

Dugoni notes that he likes to read many books at once, “so I’m in the middle of Stephen King’s, ‘Under the Dome,’ Robert Crais, ‘The Suspect,’ Edward Achorn’s, ‘The Summer of Beer and Whiskey,’ Charles Dicken’s ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ and I have Donna Tartt’s, ‘The Goldfinch’ ready to go.”

As for his own work, Dugoni has just completed the first first novel in a new series involving Seattle Homicide Detective, Tracy Crosswhite entitled, “My Sister’s Grave,” set to be released in October.

In the book, Crosswhite has spent 20 years questioning the facts surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial that followed. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House—a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder—is the guilty party. As she searches for the real killer, she unearths dark, long-kept secrets that will forever change her relationship to her past and, as the book notes say, “open the door to deadly danger.”

Bellevue’s J.A. Jance is a New York Times best-selling author of the Ali Reynolds series, the J.P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, as well as four interrelated Southwestern thrillers featuring the Walker family.

She got the writing bug while in college, but was frustrated because the professor who taught creative writing at the University of Arizona in those days thought girls “ought to be teachers or nurses” rather than writers.

That obviously wasn’t true.

She started writing in the middle of March of 1982. Her first book wasn’t successful. “For one thing, it was twelve hundred pages long,” she notes on her web page. However, by 1985 she had published the first Detective Beaumont book, “Until Proven Guilty.”

The rest, as they say, is history – and a whole lot of novels.

Jance is currently reading “The Hidden Child” by Camilla Läckberg, a psychological thriller about the chilling struggle of a young woman facing the darkest chapter of Europe’s past.

Jance’s newest book, “Remains of Innocence,” hit the bookstores on July 22.

It’s the latest in the Joanna Brady series in which the Cochise County, Ariz., sheriff has to find out how two deaths, 2,500 miles apart, and a mysterious fortune discovered hidden in a reclusive woman’s decrepit home are connected before more people are murdered.

Since she believes in buying local and reading local, "my summer reading list definitely includes some Pacific Northwest authors," she says. "I just devoured Garth Stein’s 'The Art of Racing in the Rain.' I followed that with Khaled Hosseini’s 'And the Mountains Echoed.' Right now I’m reading 'Riding with the Queen'

Next up, she says, will be "Fourth of July Creek" and "The Snow Child,"

by Smith Henderson and Eowyn Ivey, respectively.

Kretchmer's debut novel, "The Damnable Legacy of A Minister’s Wife," is just out. In it, a mid-life mountaineer regrets the decision she made 30 years ago to place her daughter for adoption.

The biological granddaughter she’s never known desperately searches for a safe and loving home. And a minister’s wife with terminal cancer designs a plan to bring them together.

The book, she notes, is "set largely against Alaska’s unforgiving landscape and narrated from beyond the grave, this story is about love and survival, exploring the importance of attachment, place, and faith and asking the question of how far we should go to achieve our goals and at what cost."

Dark and darkly humorous alike, the art of Alla and Neely Goniodsky has come to steep every aspect of their lives

A

lla Goniodsky is done trying to “make it” as an artist — at least in America.

In her native Russia, she’s been there, done that, bought the T-shirt. Alla was raised among the canals and Baroque buildings of Saint Petersburg, where she says had a formative meeting — at the age of five — with a theatrical artist seemingly capable of anything: painting, sculpture, graphic art and music alike. “(I) wished (I) could grow up to be as capable of making so many beautiful things,” she said, speaking through her daughter Neely.

In her own estimation, she’s done almost nothing but draw, paint and create for the rest of her life. By her twenties, she was a well-known stage artist in the treasured Russian medium of puppet theater, rising from the provinces to the established companies in Moscow.

Her style strikes a balance between grim and playful, displaying a similar creepy kookiness to the work of American cartoonist Charles Addams.

Alla emigrated to the United States in 1996 and, though she’s sold work here and there, found herself in a position of desire and relative comfort to abandon art as a business.

Instead, she’s adopted art as a lifestyle, exploring whatever themes and mediums strike her fancy. Her home in Juanita doubles as a personal gallery of the artistic periods she runs through.

At one moment that may be a collection of intricate painting/sculptures created from broken ceramicware. At another that may be sculptures of the female form lined with toy army men, a commentary on the culture of

Among her most fascinating work is a series of “fictional photographs” — paintings of family scenes that indeed happened, but for which no photo record exists.

She’ll sometimes find herself struck, compelled to complete a personal project even in the midst of a deadline for a theatrical project.

“Time is elastic for me,” she said. “Even though there’s often no time, somehow

there is always time to make the projects I want.”

The junior Goniodsky, Neely, is quickly making a name for herself as an animator of experimental shorts — rough, ragged and rawly emotional.

Her most recent short “The Smiths” was released by Seattle University as part of its American Refugees project, displaying animated works that shine a light on homelessness.

Ellwood T. Risk Guns, sex, money and pop culture are the obsessions of Risk, who is perhaps best known for his Pistol Target series.

His art has been featured on Showtime’s “Californication” and HBO’s “Six Feet Under.”

Franjola Lately

hris Franjola is Chelsea Handler’s man. The Long Island comic has devoted more than eight years to Handler’s projects, beginning as a writer/producer on the 12-episode run of “The Chelsea Handler Show,” then continuing with talk/sketch show “Chelsea Lately” and the behind-the-scenes mockumentary “After Lately.”

“Lately” will end in August with Handler’s departure from her contract with E!, but a new incarnation of the talk show, announced in June, has been picked up by online video-ondemand provider Netflix. Franjola will have the option of joining onto that project if he chooses.

But first he’ll attend to breaking out on his own. When he’s not in front of E!’s cameras, he’s busy touring on stages across the country and hosting the “Sons of Anarchy” discussion series “Anarchy Afterword.”

Franjola will perform at Parlor Live Aug. 14-16.

SCENE: Let’s get the most important question out of the way first: Is that “Chelsea Lately” sketch about the fan puking on you a true story?

CHRIS: It is. Right out in the open. I was in Las Vegas at the Cosmopolitan Hotel pool when that happened.

SCENE: Have a lot of your true-life stories made it into your scripted material for “Chelsea Lately” and “After Lately” over the years?

CHRIS: Yes, a lot of it. We started with basically a story one in the writer’s room. And I’m really the only single guy on the team, so it’s often up to me to come up with the truelife material, because I’m the only guy who still has good stories happen to him.

SCENE: That must be a terrible burden.

CHRIS: (laughs) It is, yeah.

SCENE: How do you feel about “Chelsea Lately” ending?

CHRIS: I think its sad because I do enjoy doing it. But I

think its time — we’ve had a great run. Everyone is looking forward to doing a new and different thing. Then there’s the deal with Netflix to begin a show in 2016. It will be back in some way or another, and I’ll be back with it. I mean, I will if I decide to, because I can still say no. But they want me back.

SCENE: You’ve been the head writer and a regular performer on “Chelsea Lately” as well as an actor on “After Lately.”

And you’re a stand-up in your free time. That’s a diverse background. How did you break into comedy?

CHRIS: Strictly as a stand up. But then through stand

up I got some writing gigs (Franjola was a writers assistant on the original run of “Family Guy” - Ed.) When “Chelsea Lately” came along it was actually the perfect thing, because I was able to write and act and talk on the roundtable. It all kind of worked out for me to be on camera.

SCENE: What was it like to play an exaggerated version of yourself on “After Lately?”

CHRIS: It’s interesting, because people think I’m really that guy. It’s fun, definitely. I did enjoy the acting aspect — we (the “Chelsea Lately” performers) were really just the actors on the show. We had a separate writing staff and we would just go on with a lot of improvisation. It was fun

to be able to be just an actor.

SCENE: Do you prefer standup or sketch? Or writing behind the scenes?

CHRIS: I prefer standup. Standup is my true love. I still

love doing it, it’s great. I really do enjoy doing it. I do like improvising and things like that that we do on “Chelsea Lately.” Writing… it’s not as glamorous, but I like doing that too. But I always come back to standup.

SCENE: I read in another interview with you that you prefer

performing your act live, instead of televising specials. Why is that?

CHRIS: I just find that your act changes so much over time.

And I should say I have since changed my mind on this subject, because people do find you online now, everyone has a camera phone, there’s no way to get away from it.

What I find is that it lives online forever, which is the main reason I dislike taped performances. I don’t sound like that anymore, I don’t look like that anymore. Most comics, they do better work than they did 10 years ago. Or even five years ago.

SCENE: Your act has a lot of observational humor, and a

lot of outrage. Your bit about coffins being sold at Costco comes to mind. In real life, are you flummoxed by the world around you?

CHRIS: I’ve since learned its a regional thing, the coffins.

Costcos in New York can’t sell coffins, but a Costco in California can, and this one I visited… you know, sold coffins. But, yeah, I do think I’m that person in real life. I feel that’s a fun way to play it these days. A little new to my act is how young the people who come out to see me have become. Our demographic on “Chelsea Lately” is pretty young, so they’re the ones buying tickets to see me. So now I’m at shows at the club and I have a front row seat to see this horrible young world we live in now. (laughs)

Tablescapes raise $75,000 for Assistance League of Eastside

nspiration and Style describe the recent fundraising luncheon presented by the Assistance League of the Eastside at the Westin Bellevue. Tablescapes 2014 “Top It Off In Style” showcased nine artful table designs that were modern, thematic and whimsical.

“Tablescape” tables were created by Chair & Trellis, Common Folk Co., Garden Dreams Design LLC, Haley’s Cottage, Heartland Interiors & Gifts, Masins Fine Furniture, Pottery Barn, Monica Hart – La Famiglia Design and Z Gallerie. Patrons had the opportunity to silently bid on table items as well as purchasing raffle tickets with the hopes of winning one of the tablescape designs.

Featured guest speaker was Eastsider and lifestyle specialist Monica Hart, who grew up in Bellevue, graduated from Interlake High School and the University of Washington, Hart began her journalism career as a news anchor on KIRO TV. She later decided that motherhood was her new priority and La Famiglia was created, inspired by her grandmother, which means family.

“I believe our homes tell a story of our lives. That’s why I’m passionate about creating fresh, inviting spaces and glamorous gatherings that tell a memorable story,” Hart said.

The event raised $75,087, which will benefit its programs on the Eastside.

Since 1989, it has returned more than $3.65 million to our community, with members donating over 17,500 in volunteer hours.

This year alone, 2,700 local school children were clothed; more than 1,000 survivors of sexual assault were supported; over 350 local families fleeing domestic violence aided; and over 960 local families and children in need were helped.
