Suspect killed, 4 police officers hurt in shootout, explosion

A 28-year-old man was killed and four Kent Police officers were injured in a Sunday afternoon shootout and explosion.

Richard Duncalf, a King County resident, reportedly aimed a gun

and opened fire at officers after he was found in a business area of Kent, police said. Duncalf died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police returned fire and killed Duncalf at the scene. During

Woman charged with attempted murder for shooting Kent man

A 24-year-old Tacoma woman has been charged with first-degree attempted murder after she allegedly shot a Kent man in the face just outside of a Panther Lake Starbucks.

King County prosecutors filed the charge on July 18 against Fermina Bartolini Bertos. She remained in custody in the county jail in Seattle with bail set at $1 million. She is scheduled to be arraigned on July 29 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, according to Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Bertos did not speak to detectives about the shooting of Dennis E. Madrigal, 23, at about 12:21 p.m. on July 15 at the Starbucks in the 10700 block of Southeast 208th Street. She reportedly told her mother and brother that

Madrigal had raped her so she shot him, according to charging papers.

Madrigal, during an interview with detectives at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Bertos did nothing to indicate she didn’t want to participate in a sexual encounter. He said he met the woman about three months ago at a party and they started seeing each other recently.

The couple went to a fireworks show on July 4. They went to Seattle on July 14 where they drank alcohol at multiple locations before returning to Madrigal’s Kent residence where they had sex.

The Kent man said he drove Bertos home to Tacoma at about 5 a.m. on July 15. Bertos later contacted him by text message and wanted to meet. He agreed and she drove to his home, according to court documents.

Bertos picked him up, they got gas and went to Starbucks. Madrigal said he opened the door to Starbucks, heard a loud noise, felt his head and fell to the ground.

The woman reportedly shot him once in the face with a .45-caliber handgun she pulled from her purse.

She then fled the scene and a few hours later turned herself in to Tacoma Police.

Kent detectives reviewed video surveillance footage from a nearby business that captured the shooting. The video showed Madrigal and Bertos walking to the Starbucks when the woman pulled out a gun from her purse and shot the man.

Madrigal had trouble speaking when police tried to talk to him right after the shooting, but he wrote down Bertos’ name as the woman who shot him.

Prosecutor Mari K. Isaacson told the court that Bertos remains a threat to commit a violent offense and asked that bail remain at $1 million.

“The defendant shot the victim in the head at point blank range in a public place in broad daylight,” Isaacson said in court documents.

Kent Police are planning a big crackdown on illegal street racing this summer because of a $15,000 grant from State Farm insurance to combat the problem.

More than 200 cars gather on summer weekend nights to drag race on streets in the North Kent industrial area, where racers like the straight, flat and empty streets.

It’s been an ongoing problem for nearly three decades that police have yet to figure out how to stop.

A 44-year-old Seattle man received a 30-day jail sentence for scamming homeowners, including a Kent resident, who paid him thousands of dollars for home improvement projects that he never finished.

Gary Shannon Edwards, an unregistered contractor, received the sentence on July 11 from King County Superior Court Judge Theresa Doyle, according to a state Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) media release.

Doyle also ordered Edwards to repay his victims in King and Pierce counties $51,659 and to pay court costs.

Edwards pleaded guilty to second-degree theft and two counts of unregistered contracting. He entered the plea on July 11, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.

Edwards admitted pocketing payments for jobs that he never completed or in some cases never started.

“We’re looking for programs that benefit teen driving through teaching to drive or in this case to deter illegal street racing.”

Commercial and manufacturing property owners would be the ones to pay if the Kent City Council decides to form local improvement districts (LIDs) to help fund major street construction projects.

That’s caused concern among the 500 or so property owners who would benefit from projects along South 212th and 228th streets that would separate vehicles from trains by moving a road either over or under the railroad tracks.

LIDs are additional property tax fees charged to property owners who would benefit from the street improvements. The LID along South 212th and 228th streets would impact commercial and manufacturing property owners and not residential property owners since no residents live in the area.

“These businesses are all paying business and occupation (B&O) taxes,”

There’s no credit for the B&O tax we are already paying and then we’re also going to pay for the LID so we’re paying twice.”

Tom Brubaker, city interim chief administrative officer, disputed the paying twice statement.

“The theory is the B&O is to pay for maintenance of existing streets and the LID is to pay for new construction and a new benefit that directly benefits these properties,” Brubaker said. “So you are paying for maintenance in the valley and paying for a new bridge. You’re paying for two different things.”

Brubaker, however,

pointed out the city could face challenges if it forms a LID to pay for the projects.

“Your first challenge is once property owners receive their preliminary assessment notices are they going to band together and stop the formation,” he said.

“And when the assessment time comes every property owner can argue that their assessment is too high and the assessments may be reduced. Those are the battles that lie ahead.”

The council approved on July 15 a $100,000 contract with Foster Pepper PLLC to conduct a preliminary LID special benefit study for South 228th and 212th streets to determine the amount of benefits to each property within the boundary. [ more PROJECTS page 5 ]

Kent Police are investigating an apparent domestic violence killing on the West Hill of a 39-year-old Federal Way woman found dead in her car at a Park & Ride lot on Military Road South.

Ruth Castillo-Yanez died from multiple stab wounds, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Kent Police were contacted late Sunday evening

by Seattle Police regarding a Burien man who turned himself in to Seattle Police Department advising that he had killed his ex-wife and left her body in her vehicle at a Kent Park & Ride lot, according to a

Kent Police media release on Tuesday.

Patrol units responded to the Kent-Des Moines Park & Ride in the 23400 block of Military Road South. They found a lone vehicle that contained the dead woman.

Detectives are working to clarify the circumstances that led to the death, as well as a motive for the fatal assault. Detectives spent multiple hours at the scene conducting the initial investigation. The suspect, 41, remains in custody.

“This appears to be a tragic incident of domestic violence, and there is no reason to believe that additional family members or the community at large are at risk,” Kent detective Tim Ford said.

“I don’t want to discuss the tactics but we’re trying some new tactics this year to hopefully round up and get a lot more enforcement action to deter what we have,” Kammerzell said.

Police conducted three crackdowns in August and September last year that resulted in 131 contacts and 101 traffic infractions.

Officers also issued 39 equipment violations, 14 for no insurance and arrested two for reckless driving.

Those extra patrols were covered by a $3,750 grant from State Farm to pay for officers extra shifts. The larger grant this year expects to

Last year a bush did catch fire. I came to speak because I don’t know what else to do. Maybe it would helped if we banned fireworks in Kent.�

Residents also wrote letters to the editor in the Kent Reporter to complain about fireworks and sent emails to the council.

Kent bans fireworks except on the Fourth of July and then only legal devices are allowed as well as the large display at night at Lake Meridian Park.

Resident Sally Board told the council she called 911 during the afternoon on Independence Day because of fireworks in her

www.kentreporter.com neighborhood. She said a police car showed up and parked on the corner for about 30 minutes. “The fireworks stopped,� she said. “But they started up again when he left.�

Board said she called 911 again that night because of so many illegal fireworks going off around her house. “I got put on hold,� she said. “They had so many calls I got a recording that said because of a high volume of fireworks calls (you had to leave a message).�

An officer called back later but Board said she had trouble hearing him the fireworks were so loud.

Councilman Jim Berrios thanked the four women for speaking at the council meeting about the fireworks problem. “There are challenges for the police department because they have to catch the people shooting off the explosives,� Berrios said. “But as a council we need to revisit this and look at what sur-

rounding cities are doing and look at enforcement and what’s legal and not legal.�

Kent Police reported 341 fireworks incidents, including 144 on the July 4. Officers made two arrests. “We need to dig into this and find out what’s working and not working in other cities,� Berrios said to the women who spoke at the meeting. “You deserve that from us.�

As chairman of the council’s Public Safety Committee, Berrios said he will have the committee look into the fireworks issue to see what can be done to try to reduce the problems in neighborhoods.

Council President Dana Ralph doubted whether a ban would do any good. “This can come back to the Public Safety Committee so we can look at the tools we have,�

Ralph said. “But I don’t know if a flat out ban would have an impact. They’ve done that in Renton and fireworks are still going off.�

Life returned back to normal Monday on Kent’s East Hill after the suspected bomb on a Metro Transit bus turned out to be a training device. “It was a training device that was accidentally left on board the bus after a training exercise that KCSO (the King County Sheriff’s Office_ held last week,� said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman DB Gates in an email.

Roads and businesses were shut down on Monday morning near 104th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 240th Street after a 911 call about a possible explosive device in a backpack on a bus. The bus was parked northbound on 104th Avenue Southeast near the Taco Bell.

A Sheriff’s Office bomb squad investigated the device and determined it had been left on the bus from a large training exercise to handle potential bomb threats and explosions that included buses.

The Sheriff’s Office used its Twitter account to release the following message: “Apologies to the drivers and businesses in Kent East Hill impacted by this morning’s suspicious bag incident. Our training aid was at fault.�

Auburn Police are the lead investigators into the shooting since Kent officers were involved.

The shooting happened just before 1 p.m. near South 228th Street and 86th Avenue South.

Five officers were involved in the shooting, and four officers received superficial burns, mainly singed hair, from the explosion, according to Melanie Frazier, Kent Police public information officer. No officers were shot, Frazier said.

All four officers were treated by Kent Fire Department personnel for burns, as well as chemical exposure. The officers were transported to Valley Medical Center in Renton where they were treated and released on Sunday.

Freshman Democratic U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene spent a couple of her millions to get into Congress.

Now, plenty of others are spending their dough to keep her there for another term.

DelBene raised $457,939 in the months of April, May and June and reported $1.1 million in cash on hand at the start of July, according to reports filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission. The Medina resident has now raised $1.7 million since the start of the election cycle last year, according to her campaign.

About half those dollars have come from individuals and the other half from political action committees. That’s a far cry from 2012 when DelBene, a former Microsoft executive, put roughly $2.3 million into her winning campaign. By election day, her money made up two-thirds of her fund raising.

Republican Pedro Celis of Redmond, the only challenger raising serious money, reported $208,000 in campaign donations in the three-month period, according to reports.

Overall, he’s raised roughly $405,000 since entering the race in March and has $260,000 in cash on hand.

Celis, also a former executive of Microsoft, initially put in $30,800 of his own money. But he said he cannot self-finance as DelBene did in 2012.

Gun measures A November ballot initiative to expand the state’s law on background checks on gun sales enjoys broad support among Washington voters while a competing measure is losing ground among the electorate.

An Elway Poll released Tuesday found 70 percent of those surveyed back Initiative 594 which would apply background checks to “all firearm sales and transfers, including gun shows and online sales.” Twenty-two percent [ more CORNFIELD page 7 ]

Do candidates understand K-12 education?

In this day and age of political beliefs, principals and given the polarization of politics, it is refreshing to hear that we have candidates who believe collaboration is one of the many ways to solve problems in our communities.

We recently had coffee with Chris Barringer (D), who is running for Position 1 in the 47th Legislative District. As we shared our expectations and concerns about K-12 public education, there were several areas that Chris voiced his common views about these same matters.

Chris also showed that he has good understanding of the issues that face our school district as well as our state, particularly in K-12 education, which is very important to us.

The Navy SEAL time forgot John Marcus Alberti took his last breath at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center on April 19.

He was alone with no next of kin.

The hospital, having no information on any living relative, placed his body in the morgue. He had been living in Auburn with Annie Johnson, whom he had met at a counseling class several years earlier.

Alberti had been admitted to the hospital, diagnosed with pneumonia. That morning he called Annie to tell her that he thought he would be discharged that afternoon. When she arrived to see him, his bed was empty, and she was informed he had passed away.

How many new signs will go up where innocent people have lost their lives?

Colorado has a lot of statistics that support recreational drug use is harmful.

Our own state patrol is seeing an escalation in the number of drug-related driving problems.

What is the cost to people? Are you willing to risk money for human lives? You best think about this.

Firework rules largely ignored As a 24-year resident of Kent, I am once again angry and saddened by the fireworks in Kent.

Even though it was proclaimed that they were only allowed at certain times, the regulations were ignored city wide. For several days and well into the middle of the night, there were bomb like explosions. People were injured, streets are strewn with the mess of litter and money wasted.

For what? It certainly isn’t to provide a show, because people can attend nearby

Fireworks solution? Impose stiff punishments If the fine for possession and/or use of illegal fireworks were high enough – and publicized widely – I think that would cut down substantially on the use of dangerous types of fireworks. The elderly and pets are especially traumatized by these explosions.

If the city can condone an automatic $125 fine for anyone traveling 21 mph near O’Brien-Neely Elementary School, then a $500 fine for people in possession of, or use of, illegal fireworks doesn’t seem outrageous at all.

Those fines could go toward first-responder costs across the board – or even

If Kent was known for a really high penalty for offenders, the word would get around that it’s not a good idea to risk it here – and maybe it’s a better idea to take the family to Lake Meridian or one of the other sanctioned fireworks displays in the Seattle-Tacoma area.

The problem with trying to report fireworks explosions is that: 1, it’s not always clear where they are coming from (especially at night when no one wants to leave their home in the dark to investigate); and 2, 911, the police and fire departments are not equipped to respond to all the many calls they receive.

If just one person/child could be spared injury from these unnecessary disturbances, it would be well worth the wrath of the offending few. These loud explosions have nothing to do with celebrating American independence – and more to do with young males wanting to blow things up.

The Fourth of July is over, but keep the subject current. I am asking the City of Kent to ban the personal use of fireworks. Many have written as to why this needs to be done.

On July 3, 2013, KOMO News quoted Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke saying city leaders thought long and hard about banning fireworks. “The safety factor is key,” Cooke said, “but it’s part of this whole American culture of celebration.” Oh, please. Safety is important, but we can’t risk adults pouting if they can’t explode something?

not OK to buy and set off illegal fireworks because we’re celebrating. Fly the flag, take them to a nursing home and talk with veterans, wear red, white and blue, donate to the USO, sing “This Land is Your Land,” use red, white and blue everything for your barbecue, make strawberry shortcake and then go to one of the public firework shows and clap and ooh and ahh with everyone else.

The council’s and the mayor’s continued refusal to address this issue is a disgrace. I encourage all of Kent’s residents to remember this at election time. I know I will.

Six local businesses named Best Workplaces FOR THE REPORTER

Six local businesses, including the city of Kent, made King County’s list of Best Workplaces for Waste Prevention and Recycling. Businesses meeting the criteria include Applus Technologies, Inc., Fred Meyer #215, Hexcel Corporation, Ingenium Group, LLC and Torklift Central.

In its eighth year, the list recognizes businesses incorporating exceptional waste prevention and recycling efforts into their daily operation. Activities range from educating staff, to making recycling convenient, using durables versus one-time use

items and composting food waste.

“Thanks to our enthusiastic, enviro-minded employees, this is the sixth year the city has qualified for the recognition, placing it on the honor roll of businesses,” said Gina Hungerford, conservation specialist.

Besides recycling paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans, the city recycles compact fluorescent light bulbs, toner cartridges, and, new this year, EPS#6-labeled Styrofoam on campus.

Despite its reach, local club leaders are concerned about its future. The organization, which officially began in Kent on June 23, 1964, had 15 members then, the same number it has now.

At one time, membership grew to about 50-60 members, according to Adrienne Rockwell, one the club’s eldest Soroptimists with 31 years of service. But that number has dwindled over time.

Small in size, the club nonetheless continued to do big things.

“We didn’t do nearly as much back then (compared to) what we do now with few members,” Rockwell said. “We’re a small

We’re into social networking. We’re growing, we’re trying to get fresh ideas and trying to find our niche for the next 50 years.”

Among those ideas is to perhaps open a second-hand store whereby women and girls, survivors of domestic abuse, can have a job, support an education and serve the community.

The Kent Soroptimists also have entertained the idea of opening a clothing bank.

All of which coincides with the club’s many, ongoing programs.

Alberti received extensive training during his tenure: six months underwater demolition training; two months of airborne training with the SEALs; Navy special war training; five months training in intelligence with the CIA; and other operations.

He completed courses in rapid deployment, strike force, command school, paramedics, and crypto/communications and had other special training.

After five years in Vietnam, he came home highly decorated: Navy Cross; two Silver Stars; Bronze Star; Vietnam Service with Clusters; President Unit Citation; Individual Presidents Citation (he was personally decorated by President John F. Kennedy); Special Operations Citation; Navy Commendation; military Advisor Medal; and five Purple Hearts.

Records show he was in five major battles: 1959 Long Xuyen; 1960 Saigon; 1961 Phu Vihn; 1963 Danang; and 1964 Can Tho. He was a prisoner of war from March to October 1962. No information was available regarding his release.

Alberti was discharged on Sept. 24, 1965, leaving the service with the rank of Senior Chief Gunners Mate E-8. He was born Sept.

24, joined Sept. 24, re-enlisted Sept. 24 and was discharged Sept. 24.

At the time of his discharge, Alberti refused all military benefits.

After several months of red tape, Johnson, with the help of the American Legion Auburn Post 78, honored the man with a ceremony at Auburn’s Veterans Memorial Park, followed by a motorcade to Tahoma National Cemetery, where his ashes were inurned. A reception followed at the home of his friends, Tim and Cheri Graves.

Jack Hanes, of Albany, Ore., is a Navy veteran, and was a friend of John Marcus Alberti. Inspired by Alberti’s service, he wrote this tribute.

Soroptimists of Kent and volunteers also teamed up at the Farrington Court Retirement Community to make dresses for young girls around the world.

They also held a bra drive for the Free the Girls program. According to Simpson, the club collected 87 bras and raised more than $300 for the program, which provides job opportunities for survivors of sex trafficking.

Lately, the Kent Soroptimists donated $4,150 to the Genesis Project, a program that offers hope for a new life to young women and girls involved in domestic minor sex trafficking in the South King County area.

“It just makes me feel good to help people,” said Sandy Johnson, the club’s new president. “I had absolutely no idea how many people in Kent (we represent and serve).”

For Rockwell, one of her favorite community service projects was raising funds for children,

victims of domestic violence situations, so they could go to summer camp.

Still, with a dearth of sincere NFL interest, Bronson not only tried out for the Canadian Football League, but also applied to be a police officer in Arizona. “That is something I wanted to do after playing football,� he said. “I actually ended up getting a call.�

But a conflict arose the weekend of his law enforcement interview — an invitation for a private workout with the Seahawks. “I was at that point where I just didn’t know,� Bronson said. “I wanted to play football but also wanted too provide for my family. So it was that thin line of how far do I want to take this?�

Kent’s Lolo Ford qualified for this week’s USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Houston.

Ford, an eighth-grader-tobe at Northwood Middle School, qualified in three events – the 200- and 400-meter runs and the long jump. She took the 200 at the regional meet in Spokane on July 5-6.

Ford finished the spring school track season undefeated. She is believed to be the first girl in the Kent School District to win every event she entered during the oval season, according to her coaches.

Ford was ranked No. 1 in the nation middle school rankings for grades 7-9 in the 200-meter run with a personal-best time of 25.51 seconds, according to her personal coach James Laurence, of Legerity Sports Performance.

She has covered the 400 in 59 seconds and stretched 16 feet, 6 inches in the long jump. She holds school records in the 200, 400 and long jump.

Rocky college career Bronson remembers the game and drive when his freshman year at the University of Washington fell apart. It came against rival Washington State. The three-star recruit out of high school who rushed for 3,810 yards in his career, fumbled twice, the second time near the goal line. The coaches yelled at the youngster on the sidelines and his playing time diminished. Bronson’s confidence took a hit. He finished the year with just 89 yards on 19 carries.

He redshirted his sophomore year and transferred to Eastern Washington, where the coaches preferred speedy backs and saw the then 230-pound ball of muscle as a fullback and short yardage specialist.

Demitrius Bronson still feels a bit timid about being considered a member of the Seattle Seahawks. It’s not that he’s scared to broach the subject. It’s more that he fears it might all be a dream. “It’s still kind of a shocker to me,� Bronson said. “As much as it’s a shock to other people, I’m still in ‘oh’s and ah’s,’ too. But this is just the beginning. There are still more steps to this process.

Once it’s settled 100 percent I can probably breathe — just for a second.�

From can’t miss recruit to a bench-riding transfer, the Kentwood High School graduate is living a King County football fairy tale.

The 24-year-old running back signed with his hometown Super Bowl champions on June 16 and will enter training camp on Friday in Renton as a project with all the physical tools to be successful but none of the stats to back him up. “You don’t know when your time is done, so I’m just trying to enjoy it while I’m here,� Bronson said.

Bronson began his senior season as the Eagles starter, before an ankle injury and strong competition derailed his season, limiting him to just 32 carries.

With a total of 10 starts in 29 games, Bronson finished his college career with just 600 rushing yards, along with 14 touchdowns and eight catches. “My college career didn’t go the way I had planned

it to out of high school,�

Bronson said. “Yeah, you want things to go perfect but that’s not how life goes a lot of times. That’s not really how life goes at all.�

With unspectacular college numbers, the gym fanatic knew he’d need to test well physically to have a chance in the pros.

Measuring 5-feet-9-inches tall and 211 pounds, with 7 percent body fat, Bronson ran a 4.52 40-yard dash and completed 24 bench press reps of 225 pounds. By comparison, Carlos Hyde, a 230-pound bruiser from Ohio State who was eventually drafted in the second

Bronson had nervously watched the first and second days of the draft and tried to keep himself busy on day three, but after seven rounds, no teams were interested.

So Bronson called his agent, who told him to “trust me� and “stay put� because “teams have been calling and asking about you.�

About 30 minutes later, Bronson’s cellphone awoke.

All he remembers is hearing the words “this is the Seattle Seahawks� and “want to invite you to rookie camp.� “I couldn’t remember my name, what my agents name was, what my phone number was,� Bronson said. “I was stuttering. Everybody was asking what happened after the phone call. I really couldn’t remember.�

Bronson said he also

received interest from the Houston Texans and San Diego Chargers. Demitrius’ brother, John Bronson, a tight end who played three games in the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, figured it could be a hard decision. “It was a no-brainer,�

Demitrius said. “I didn’t have to think about that one.�

Bronson attended the Seahawks Rookie Minicamp to audition for the team as an undrafted free agent. He quelled internal concerns that the professionals may have super powers and that he wouldn’t fit in. The tryout went as well as he could possibly imagined. “That was probably some of the best football I’ve ever played,� he said. “I went in with a head full of confidence and knowing this is my only shot. This is all I’ve been asking for. One shot, one opportunity.�

When Bronson returned to his hotel after the minicamp, he received a call from his agent saying the Seahawks planned to sign him, although league rules regarding college enrollment kept him from participating in Organized Team Activities.

After more than a month, the signing became official.

Bronson called it a “dream come true.â€? “I never would have thought in a million years‌ from transferring to UW to Eastern, to having a chance to play for Seattle now — it’s not something that was in my thought process,â€? he said. [ more BRONSON page 11 ]

Bronson’s goals are pretty standard fare in the undrafted football world: keeping the hunger for competition through training camp, outwork everybody else and take every day as it comes. “I really just think it’s all about who wants it more and for me it’s basically to come in training camp and know the playbook and competing,� Bronson said. “I want to walk off the field and say I gave 100 percent for that practice.�

But Bronson’s motivation goes beyond the clichÊd sports competitive spirit.

He also knows that he must provide for his family. “Having my son has made me want to run through brick walls that get set up,� he said. “I can’t just sit here and have him look at me and not doing something.�

Bronson lives in Auburn with his fiancĂŠ, Tatiana Kawachi, and 3-year-old son, Demitrius II. Bronson and Kawachi went to Kentwood together — Kawachi the cheerleader and prom queen to his star athlete. Somehow, the couple “metâ€? at the University of Washington and have dated ever since. “She still to this day claims she didn’t know me at all (in high school),â€?

Bronson said.

Despite his immediate athletic prowess, school was a different story. After posting a 1.4 GPA at the end of his freshman year in high school, Bronson graduated college with a 3.5 GPA and a degree in sociology, with a certificate in leadership.

The opportunity with the Seahawks has helped expose him to a life after football. “I can go through so many avenues that before I couldn’t really get,� he said. “Raising a family in college is not easy. It’s something that, shoot, you really

learn to appreciate and learn to evaluate.�

Bronson works out six days a week at either Kentwood or the Seahawks training complex in Renton.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday is weight room and Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is work on the field.

In Renton, he chats with all-pro receiver Percy Harvin about the work needed to make the team. At one point, while walking around the training facility, quarterback Russell Wilson called over and asked: “What’s up, Bronson?� “I kind of looked back to make sure he was actually talking to me,� Bronson said. “Those guys are cool.�

Back in Covington, it’s often just Bronson and Laurence, unless Laurence brings along some of the local high school and college athletes he’s training.

The pair met in 2008 and Laurence, who took a run at the NFL himself, has worked to clean up and perfect Bronson’s mechanics. “His body is unique in that he has a lot of natural abilities,� said Laurence, who graduated from KentMeridian in 1998. “Lord willing he’ll play until he’s 32. But there’s a lot of life after football.�

But beyond the players on the field, the Seahawks secret weapon is, of course, the 12th Man, the fans who last year set multiple records for crowd noise and whose support means that every game at CenturyLink Field this season is already sold out.

Thanks in part to the fans, Seattle won all but one game last year after going undefeated the year before at the “Clink”. In the past two seasons, Seattle’s point differential at home is a plus 271 with a plus-25 turnover margin.

In addition, since 2005, the Seattle Seahawks lead the league in opponent false start penalties with 132 in 72 games.

All together, the team and fans had a great ride last season, from training camp in Renton through an opening day win in Carolina to Sherman’s NFC Championshipsaving deflection to the amazing victory parade in February.

And boy, does that trophy look good here in Seattle.

A. First, thanks for watching the show. That plant was the romantically inspired “Love Lies Bleeding” because those unusual flower clusters drip down from the center of the plant.

It is also called the “chenille plant” because of the fuzzy texture and “summer poinsettia” due to the deep

red color. Some plants have many different common names so this is why you should look for the seeds by using the Latin name Amaranthus. Follow the instructions on the seed pack and you’ll be able to grow this ancient edible plant in your own garden with little problems.

Q. I know I am supposed to dead head or remove the faded blooms from my hanging basket but what about the tiny flowers from plants like lobelia? Do I really have to cut off all those spent flowers? J.P., Buckley A. No worries, most plants with small blooms will be self-cleaning and the faded petals will fall on their own. Fuchsias are an example of a plant that will produce more blooms if you remove the flower and the fat green seed pot just behind the bloom. If you leave these pods on the plant they will darken as they begin to ripen the seed inside and this saps the energy of the plant so that flower production slows down. Fuchsias prefer a balanced plant food with the numbers 20-20-20 on the label to keep pumping out maximum flowers.

Family and friends threw a surprise 100th birthday party for Ralph “Phil” Abbenhouse in Kent last Saturday.

“I feel fine. Still working on my first million (dollars),” Abbenhouse quipped.

“101 … that’s next.”

Abbenhouse grew up in Western Washington, graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, worked in the radiation laboratory at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology during World War II and fulfilled a long career as an engineer, 20 years of which were spent at The Boeing Co. He and Lois Armstrong were married for 63 years until her death in 2005.

They raised two daughters, Linda and Julie. He has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Abbenhouse enjoys spending time with family, woodworking and boating.

He carved his own 16-foot powerboat that he frequently drove on Lake Washington. He also built a family cabin at Summit Lake.

When asked if there were any secrets to his longevity, Abbenhouse replied, “Carrots, green beans and potatoes.”
