WHIDBEY READERS CHOICE AWARDS

Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners of this year’s Best of Whidbey Readers Choice Awards. All of those being recognized in this guide were singled out by readers of the Whidbey News-Times, The Whidbey Examiner and South Whidbey Record. In addition to a print ballot, voting was conducted online. While there are some repeat winners from previous years, this year we see some new ones as well. These surprises reflect the evolving landscape of our island community. Whether it’s Best Community Festival/Event, Best Volunteer, Best Hamburger or Best Margarita, the Best of Whidbey is intended to be a fun way to recognize those who stand out amongst their customers and peers. Clearly the recognition that the people, businesses and organizations receive is important to them. You see Best of Whidbey awards from years past posted inside offices and stores. You even see banners proudly touting previous wins.

thanks and support by nominating and voting for the people, places and things that they truly believe to be the best that Whidbey has to offer. New this year, some of the winners in key categories will be receiving crystal trophies as well as the traditional certificates. This will include categories such as Best Volunteer, Best Community Leader, Best Customer Service and Best Community Event.

Also this year, Whidbey News Group is bestowing a special Publisher’s Award for Lifetime Achievement. The first recipient, appropriately, is former Whidbey News-Times co-owner and publisher Wallie Funk, who was integral to the fabric of Oak Harbor for more than 30 years and whose mark on this community is still evident today. As you peruse this year’s special section, remember that nothing says “thank you” to these and other businesses more than shopping local. Spending your dollars in your community will make Whidbey Island even better in years to come.

WAIF represents years of supporting island animals By MEGAN HANSEN

It’s clear the staff and volunteers at Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation, or WAIF, care about the pets they serve. Judy Dewing, who works part time at the Freeland Cat Cottage, lovingly describes the cats in her charge. There are some who don’t stay long while others have been there for years. “This is the best job I’ve ever had,” she said. One cat, Robbie, was a stray who came to the shelter three years ago. Two adoptions didn’t work out and the cottage gladly took

him back each time. He’s special and requires a special owner. His days are spent in the cottage, getting attention from visitors and gazing out the windows at nearby birds. It’s this kind of commitment that has residents acknowledging WAIF as this year’s Best Nonprofit Organization in the Whidbey News Group’s Best of Whidbey competition. The honor isn’t surprising to Charles Vreeland, executive director for WAIF.

CONTINUED FROM 4 “It doesn’t surprise me because of the positive press we’ve gotten for the work we do,” he said. The minimal kill shelter has had an average live release rate of 93.4 percent over the last 14 years. The national threshold for a “no kill” shelter is 90 percent, Vreeland said. WAIF does not euthanize animals because of overcrowding issues, but does occasionally have to euthanize for health or aggression problems. Vreeland joined WAIF in November 2013 after working for the Humane Society in Kansas City, Kan. “WAIF has a very good reputation,” Vreeland said. “I liked that it has more than just one facility.” In fact, WAIF has four shelters on the island as well as three thrift stores that raise funds to help run the $1.2 million annual program. The organization is always seeking volunteers, from people to work at the thrift stores to animal socializers. Currently the organization has about 150 volunteers. WAIF currently is serving around 170 animals, but has served as many as 1,500 animals

The main facility, located just south of

Coupeville, is currently 2,200 square feet. The new facility will be 10,000 square feet and located about a half-mile north of the current location. With 73 percent of the $3.8 million goal raised, WAIF is expecting to break ground in September. Vreeland said the bulk of the fundraising has happened in the last three years. “Everyone believes Whidbey Island deserves this shelter.”

The Garage of Blessings is all about volunteerism and giving back. And the creator of the organization, which gives out free items to those in need, is not about to take all the credit. “Yes, I started this,” Kristiina Miller said. “But I do not want to take the spotlight for what happens here. This happens because of these people.” In addition to Miller, the garage has roughly 15 volunteers who keep the garage running like a “well-oiled machine,” Miller said. Miller is this year’s recipient of Best of Whidbey’s Nonprofit Volunteer for the year award. Miller said the garage serves roughly 1,800 people per month and now takes in approximately 400 individual donations per month. It is filled with clothes, housewares, furniture, books, toys, crafts, some food and other everyday items. All items are free to anyone who comes in. Everything stored in the Garage of Blessings is donated to the facility on Goldie Road in Oak Harbor. The garage helps kids with school supplies and clothes, as well as organizes a

week of free haircuts for all students headed back to school. The garage also hosts a free toiletry day with Helping Hands from Grace Community Church, providing free shampoo, soap, diapers and other personal items. The upstairs of the space reserves items for homeless outreach, pulling aside backpacks, sleeping bags, warm clothes and other items to “help them survive out there,” Miller said. Miller began the project last year when she started knocking on doors and volunteering her services. She said she quit her job in property management because she wanted to give back to the community. A professional organizer, Miller found her true calling when a woman hired her to organize a garage of items and asked her to take and donate everything. She was able give out all the items to those in need, and as others started donating, Miller could see there was a real need in Oak Harbor. Miller had faced that need as a homeless child from the age of 11 to 16. Abandoned by her parents, Miller was taken in by kind teachers until a permanent home was found. SEE BLESSINGS, PAGE 7

Miller moved the Garage of Blessings to the industrial park because the outfit outgrew her own garage, and another space, quickly. The charity now resides in two spaces totaling 3,600 feet. While no one is paid for their time, money can be donated to pay rent at the garage. The organization also holds bake sales, fundraisers and an annual sale to help support the space. Open Hours for the Garage of Blessings are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, 12-5 p.m. Wednesdays, 9-11 a.m. Thursdays for donations only, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays. Coqui Herken, left, and Emily Boyle played the lead roles in “Enchanted April,” a June 2014 production at the Whidbey Playhouse. It was Herken’s first speaking part.

Ashley Sanders isn’t surprised that the Whidbey Playhouse leaves a lasting impression on many who come to watch theatrical performances. It certainly did on her. Nearly three years ago, the Oak Harbor playhouse needed some extra hands on the set of a musical. Sanders’ dad asked her if she wanted to help and she showed up to a rehearsal at the old theater on Midway Boulevard and was glued to the stage as she listened to a young high school teacher sing. “I was just captivated,” she said. It’s those sort of impressions that have led Whidbey News Group readers to pick the Whidbey Playhouse as a winner of two categories in the Best of Whidbey readers’ choice awards. The venerable playhouse was voted as Best Performing Arts Venue and Best Live Entertainment. It’s a place dear to Allenda Jenkins, who

watched shows as a kid and wound up pursuing a drama major in college before she leaving for Los Angeles to chase bigger dreams. Jenkins returned to Oak Harbor and became president of the playhouse. “It’s an awesome place for live entertainment,” said Jenkins, who still serves on the playhouse board. “It’s your community and it’s your friends and neighbors. “When you see a live performance at the playhouse, you might see someone on stage and say, ‘Wait a minute. I think I saw them at the grocery store.’ Or, ‘Wasn’t that my sixthgrade teacher?’ ” Those on stage and behind the sets at the Whidbey Playhouse are a blend of veteran actors, stage technicians, directors and producers who work with eager new talent whose jobs bring them to Whidbey Island. A large contingent of new and seasoned actors have affiliation with the Navy. Several actors have extensive community

PLAYHOUSE CONTINUED FROM 8 and professional theater backgrounds with some even appearing briefly in major motion pictures. The old structure that houses the Whidbey Playhouse adds to the charm. Formerly a church, the playhouse seats 128 and offers a large stage, though the ceiling isn’t as high as some playhouse performers would like. Still, the setting gets the audience up close and personal. It’s been happening this way since the playhouse put on its first performance in 1966. “I like community theater because it’s so intimate,” said Pat Hawley, a retired drama teacher at Oak Harbor High School. Sanders’ involvement led to personal growth. She joined the stage crew and later became stage manager. She worked on six shows, made new friends and became inspired by others. “I was extremely introverted,” Sanders said. “I still am, but I can break out of that shell and do what needs to be done. It helped a lot.” She said the playhouse became a second family. “If you take the Whidbey Playhouse out of Whidbey Island, it would leave a gaping hole.”

Schutte started in real estate when he got out of the Navy in 1978. “I knew nothing about real estate when I started,” he said. “And I’m still learning.” He left real estate in 1981 to devote himself to full-time ministry. He was the associate pastor of his church and ran the fledgling Lighthouse Christian Academy for three years. He then returned to real estate, which he said has been very good for his family. “I made a good living between Libbey Road and Deception Pass,” he said, adding that technology has changed the real estate game so that agents are no longer as localized as they once were. His family purchased the Coldwell Banker Koetje Real Estate business five years ago. The company has served the community for 73 years, helping make “Koetje” a household name in the city. The company’s focus, Schutte said, is serving Navy families as a “military relocation specialist.” He said Coldwell Banker’s nationwide stature helps make the transition easier for families moving from other military towns. Schutte is a past president of the Northwest Multiple Listing Service as well as a current board member of the North Puget Sound Association of Realtors. He has been designated by the National Association of Realtors as a “certified real estate brokerage manager” and is a graduate of the Real Estate Institute. Schutte also writes and stars in videos about real estate and related topics. He has a blog on the Whidbey News-Times website, at blogs.whidbeynewstimes.com, called “Whidbey Island Real Estate Information.” Schutte said he has 20 agents and a dozen other employees. “We have the best support staff in the world,” he said. “We really do.”

Livermore island’s best artist, say the voters in 2014 Best of Whidbey

1690 Main St., Ste. 103, Freeland 360-331-8424

Margaret Livermore, a resident of Whidbey Island for 32 years, was chosen as Best Artist in the Best of Whidbey competition. Livermore is a founding member of the Penn Cove Gallery in Coupeville and the Garry Oak Gallery in Oak Harbor, and she is involved in many community projects, such as the Oak Harbor Music Festival and the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival. Specializing in water color paintings, Livermore said she’s probably best known for her paintings of Deception Pass Bridge. She’s been painting for decades, but she never had any formal training. “I’m a self-taught artist,” she said. “I didn’t go to school for training. I took workshops and classes and stuff like that.” Livermore, the wife of a doctor, said she got

her start in painting when she was attending an Interns and Residents Wives Association meeting, where some women there were showing their work and talking about classes they offer. Livermore was there with a friend, and upon hearing that, they decided to check it out. “I really loved it,” she said. “ ‘Cause I love the way watercolors just kind of smooshes around and you can just kind of let it do its thing.” Since then, she’s taken a few classes over the years, learning new techniques. “I’ve loved to take new classes and learn new styles and incorporate a little bit of what somebody teaches me into what I want to use,” she said. Margaret Livermore is a self-taught artist who has helped start two cooperative art galleries on the island and is involved with many other community activities focused on the arts.

Last fall, Livermore took a class in painting on rice paper, which she said is an entirely new technique than what she was used to. She said that it wasn’t difficult to learn because “you just have to play with it a little bit to see what it does.” She also recently started painting on silks because she wanted to try something new. But Livermore wants to paint silks for pictures to hang up, not wearables. Her favorite, though, is watercolor. She’s been doing it since she started painting 35-36 years ago and enjoys how quickly it can be finished. “I don’t like to do oils because it takes forever for them to dry,” Livermore said. “When I want my picture, I want it done, I want it now. I don’t want to wait forever.” Livermore paints a variety of topics but usually does sceneries, such as the sights of Whidbey Island and Deception Pass Bridge. “I love to paint the peaceful, quiet views of Whidbey Island and Puget Sound,” she said. “I love to paint flowers, and I’m getting into painting fish.” A scuba diver, she used to do underwater photography. She said that though she doesn’t really do that anymore, she wants to start incorporating those images into her

artwork. Another aspect of painting she enjoys is giving people something they can enjoy. Livermore said that people who visit Whidbey Island often want to take a souvenir of what the area is like home with them. “I like to paint things they can take home, either in card format, or small prints, or bigger prints, so they can take a little piece of Whidbey home with them,” she said. Livermore found out she was nominated for Best of Whidbey when a customer came in to the gallery and told her. She was surprised. “It’s exciting. It shows that people, they like my work,” she said. “I guess I’m well known. I mean, I’m kind of all over the place, as far as being visible,” she said, explaining why people might have voted for her. She also believed it partially had to do with her community involvement. Livermore has been a volunteer in many other aspects over the years. She said that what she does is paint “and volunteer everywhere under the sun.” Livermore said that winning Best of Whidbey would be a “feather in her hat,” and it would be cool, but that she doesn’t want to brag about achievements. “To me, what I do is just what I do,” she said. “It’s just what I like to do, it’s not something I want to go out there and go, hey, look what I’m doing. I just want to be part of things. That’s what I do.”
