Geologists return for seismic survey USGS scientists did study on Island in 2008, will test new technology Reporter Staff

As part of a continuing earthquake hazard study in the Seattle urban area, the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) will be conducting a series of seismic-reflection surveys starting tomorrow, July 10 on Mercer Island, as well as in parts of Seattle. The studies will conclude on or around July 19. USGS scientists will re-survey the area where they conducted the 2008 seismic-reflection pro-

file on Mercer Island. Exact locations include: along 84th Ave. S.E. from S.E. 39th St. to S.E. 29th St., and along 84th Ave. S.E. f rom ap p r ox i m at e l y S.E. 26th St., to the north tip of Mercer Island. During the 2008 USGS survey, the energy source used was a small vibration truck. This truck used two 12-second sweeps to put vibrations into the earth, which reflected off the boundary between rock types and back to the surface. The

reflected vibrations were recorded by sensors attached to a cable placed along the ground surface. The vibrations produced were then converted into information about the soil and rock layers underground. This year’s experiment will use a different method. Collected data will record vibrations in the ground and along its surface generated by ambient noise. Island oral history project brings generations together By Joseph Livarchik

It began as an idea of Islanders taking down their favorite spots on Mercer Island, with three groups of adults coming into Mercer Island Library in 2013 and giving interview clips of Calkins Landing, Luther Burbank Park and the East Society School. But after that initial round of interviews, Mercer Island Teen Services Librarian Carrie Bowman, who proposed the project, saw the potential for something more. So Bowman connected with Mercer Island High School global studies teacher Mike Radow to see if she could get students to collaborate and interview some of the Island’s older residents about their favorite Island spots. The collaboration, which also included the Mercer Island Historical Society, resulted with twenty-two high school ninth graders interviewing community

seniors and selecting their favorite interview snippets to create a virtual tour of Mercer Island. Using their district-issued iPads and posting their clips online, students found there’s plenty of history on Mercer Island and you don’t have to go too far to find it. Bowman, who was especially excited to get younger Islanders mingling with older residents, said one of the goals for the project was to document some of their accounts while the people who lived them were still able to tell them. “Right now, the differences between young people and people in their mid-80s or mid-90s is pretty extreme,” she said. “The way that people had fun in earlier generations and the amount of time spent fixing cars, building things,

being outside, it was quite a difference from most kids today. Most kids aren’t necessarily building their own things and riding a horse from one end of the Island to the other. The freedom and desire to roam around outside has changed quite a bit.” Af te r mingling with potential narrators at an open house in February, the teens worked in pairs to prepare interview questions for an adult who interested them, with interviews conducted at the Mercer Island Library. Following the interviews, Bowman and high school Tech TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) Justin Talmadge spent several classroom sessions helping the teens work with audio recording and editing program Audacity to extract and edit stories from the interviews. The “walk,” or audio tour, is marked on a Google map and each stop is associated with an audio clip (called an “echo”) telling a story about that place. On the Woices website, visitors will find twelve stories, totaling 36 minutes and 13 seconds, the length of an album on CD. Stories include an account from Joe Lightfoot, whose father George Lightfoot is considered by many the “father of the Lake Washington Floating Bridge.” Lightfoot recalls his adventures chasing mud hens in a friend's canoe off the north end of Mercer Island in the 1930s. Islander Bert Pound describes the process of building a house for his family in the late 1930s. June Lindsey talks about the grassroots effort that focused on preserving Pioneer Park soon after its creation in the 1960s, with efforts leading to a 64 percent turnout in an election that saved the park from becoming a golf course. And Sally Ford Brown talks about working for the Mercer Island Reporter out of college in the 70s and learning more than she initially bargained for about

Spanish teacher Maria Kearney has seen firsthand the benefits of being bilingual. Born and raised in Mexico, Kearney has made a career out of her fluency in Spanish and English, working as a medical interpreter and teaching Spanish “on and off for 24 years.” She's raised bilingual children and believes if you're going to learn another language, the best way is to learn young. The younger, the better. “I don’t know what it is about little ones understanding you,” she said. “When they’re little, you just teach them. You just talk to them. All stories are very short and quick, easy to listen to and leave the listener wanting more. “One thing that’s really great is this community is defined by the Island. There are boundaries that make it more containable and limited, you can limit it. The community itself is pretty tight,” said Bowman. “Mercer Island as a community really lends itself to this, I think, because of its boundaries as an Island and the history reflects those boundaries. The nature of the Island community is different from the nature of other communities in a lot of ways.” After finishing the project, Bowman said she still had plenty of interview subjects who they weren’t able to get to due to not enough students. When asked if this might become a recurring project, she said it was still up in the air and would depend on if the collaboration and engagement is still there. She emphasized the importance of getting the two generations together, and believes the insights gathered through this project left an impression on the students involved. “These kids have exercise upon exercise at school, but to have something that’s real time, real people, real events and can be shared with other people is real important. I think this was a meaningful project, and that matters to kids. He needs to fly to various places for depositions and meetings with experts and lay witnesses, clients and other attorneys, and he needs to be able to fly alone. Sound Transit's website states that there is a telephone number that one can call four to six hours in advance of one’s flight to obtain either a wheelchair (which I assume comes with a human being to push the wheelchair when one is traveling alone?), or to obtain a golf cart at Sound Transit's airport station to help with the very long distance between the light rail station at the airport and the airport terminal.

Yet there is no way to reach anyone at Sound Transit to obtain wheelchair or golf cart assistance at the airport light rail station when no one answers the

And when you get to the light rail destination station, such as the one at Pioneer Square (and likely at other stations), it gets worse. Due to the steepness and narrowness of the escalators, mobility-impaired and disabled persons, and those with luggage beyond a single small roller bag or backpack, have to use an elevator to exit and to enter the station — an elevator that Sound Transit knows is being used by homeless or vagrants as a toilet. And from there, after enduring the stench and bio-hazards left in the elevator at the Pioneer Square station's exit at street level, there is no parking space or even a lane in which to park or stop a car on 3rd Avenue to pick people up from the station. There is a bus-only travel lane along the entire 3rd Avenue block, so the only place where a disabled per-

are two to three spaces for cars to stop. And there, at the northwest corner, I found those spaces were taken up by taxis. So if a disabled person or person with luggage can make the walk to the end of the block, there's no place to be picked up unless the driver is lucky enough to find a place to park. King County taxpayers are paying an enormous tax burden to support light rail, yet what we are getting is a system that is very difficult, if not impossible, to access between the airport and downtown Seattle, if one has luggage or is a senior citizen, weak, infirm or disabled. That includes a lot of us. This problem obviously also concerns getting to or from work on light rail if you have Pioneer Square and maybe other downtown stations to travel to or from, if disabled or older or traveling with young children. Please fix these problems. King County taxpayers are paying a fortune to Sound Transit. The system should be nice and usable.

t this time last year, most of us were excitedly planning for summer vacations, home improvement projects and BBQs. But for three Washington women – Sheila Asselin, Brenda Lee Bail and Amanda Blanchard –July brought an end to all those things. Last July, Sheila, 57, was killed by her husband. Brenda Lee, 48, was strangled by her fiancé. Amanda, 41, was killed by her fiancé days before her wedding. All three were victims of domestic violence. In 2013, 35 people in Washington – including three children – were killed as a result of domestic violence. Thousands more endure daily verbal, physical and sexual abuse. Domestic violence touches more people than you may realize including children and men. Some are able to break away from the destructive cycle, but too many often die trapped in it. Deciding to leave is one of the most risky and terrifying decision most victims will ever make. It’s a decision some victims will only get to make once. Imagine picking up the phone and making a call to someone you hope can provide a safe place to flee and being told there’s no room. That’s the reality for tens of thousands of victims every day.

That’s why supporting organizations like the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence is so important. They make sure victims have a safe place to turn and provide important prevention tools for teaching our sons and daughters how to develop healthy relationships, training ourselves to identify signs of abuse among our coworkers, friends and family, and helping abusers break the cycle. FRIDAY | 27 EMBEZZLEMENT: Over a

period of six months, between December 15 of 2013 and June 26 of this year, an employee of the Mercer Island McDonalds embezzled $14,667, through payroll fraud. The suspect is a 28-year-old Edmonds man. Police weren’t able to release any further information as this investigation is ongoing. THEFT: A Bellevue couple told police they’d renewed two Canadian passports which had shipped from Canada on June 24. According to FedEx they were delivered on June 26. The couple said they’d never received them and had been communicating with FedEx. The FedEx driver said that somebody had signed for them and the driver placed them in the mailbox when he couldn’t find the house address. The reporting party spoke to his neighbors who said they’d never seen the FedEx driver or anyone signing for the package. FRAUD: A 56-year-old Island man reported his financial information compromised. It was used to wire money directly to suspects. His wife reported the same incident a week before. It’s unclear if the suspect actually received the money, but the suspect’s information and address were obtained. CAR THEFT: A Toyota Prius

parked in the Shorewood lot north of S.E. 36th St. in the 8800 block on June 22 went missing between Sunday and Friday. Nothing of value was in the vehicle and the owner, a 45-yearold Island woman, said it had been locked when she left it. It was later found on Sunset Blvd. No usable evidence was collected. THEFT: A 23-year-old woman employee of QFC said she’d seen a black man in his late 20s with a black backpack that looked very full, walk out the front door. When she followed the suspect, he ran off. She reviewed video footage and saw the man place a dozen bottles of Grey Goose vodka in a cart, then push it to the rear of the store. When the suspect left the store he had no cart and hadn’t purchased any items. Losses were estimated at $797. The suspect was wearing a pink button-down shirt, black baseball cap and white shoes.

Barbara Ford, 91, passed away peacefully at Covenant Shores Health Center on June 12, 2014. Barbie’s death was preceded by her husband William B. Ford (1990) and her daughter Elizabeth Lee Ford McKinley (2013). Barbie, was born November 19, 1922 in Waltham, Massachusetts. She attended Colby Jr. College in New Hampshire and graduated from Boston University with BA in Education. In 1948 she married her square dancing partner, and friend William B. Ford. In 1959 they packed up the three kids in the station wagon, tied the sailboat to the top, and drove across the country to begin a new life on Mercer Island where she has resided ever since. Barbie loved exploring and traveling the world with friends, watching Shakespeare plays, and attending the Opera. She also loved the solitude of a good book and peaceful afternoons sitting on her porch. Her love for the water and passion for sailing lives on strongly in her children and grandchildren. As a master gardener, Barbie loved walking through the forest, planting in the garden, and tending to Mother Nature. Barbie was a faithful servant at Emmanuel Episcopal Church for the past 55 years. She loved The Lord and is now at home with Him. Barbie loved deeply, lived joyfully, and gave generously. Her legacy will live on in her children Bruce Ford, Ann Ford, her nine grandchildren and her 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island on June 28, 2014. 1093809

At least four reported their mailboxes broken into. THEFT: Between 7:05 and 7:10 p.m. a suspect shoplifted about $70 worth of merchandise from Rite Aid. The stolen items included a pocket radio, a cellphone charger and a Bluetooth speaker.

MONDAY | 30 CAR PROWL: Sometime between midnight and 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the 2800 block of 78th Ave. S.E., a black Escalade Cadillac had its rear passenger window broken. Two small flashlights were taken and the damages were estimated at $500. CAR PROWL: A car in the 7800 block of 78th Ave. S.E. had its window shattered and the vehicle searched. Edith Carolyn (Sandberg) Adams 9/2/1928 – 6/11/2014

We have lost our brilliant beauty queen of a mother after a long and valiant fight with congestive heart failure, during which we think she kept her weak heart beating through sheer force of will. Edith Sandberg was born in Hoquiam, Washington to Oscar and Charlotte Sandberg. She graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1946 as class Valedictorian and attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg despite her father’s objections to girls going to college. She met Alan Duane Adams on her first day there and married him soon after they both graduated in June 1951. After completing his Air Force duty and Dental School at the University of Washington, they settled on Mercer Island, where they raised their four children. After retirement in 1986, they moved to Hood Canal and lived there for 28 years. She died just five days short of their 63rd wedding anniversary. Our mother was a keenly intelligent and beautiful woman. She was the kind of mom who made you almost burst with pride when she came to your third grade class to help with a party, or when you brought your college friends home for Thanksgiving. She was kind to all and never let on if she did not like someone; in fact one of her most remarkable qualities was her refusal to gossip about people. Mom was born in an era when most women channeled their talents into homemaking, and her family and friends were the beneficiaries of her training in Home Economics at Central. She was a great hostess and cook, and loved to give cocktail and dinner parties. As our family expanded to include spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, one of the great constants of our lives was looking forward to gatherings at Mom and Dad’s home for holidays and birthdays, where we were always guaranteed a delicious and beautifully presented meal. She even made gift-wrapping and flower arranging into an art form. She

loved to share her love of cooking, sewing, and other domestic skills, and all of us will treasure what we learned from her. Mom and Dad loved to travel and over the years they toured Europe, parts of Africa, Nepal, Thailand, Antarctica, and many other places, usually with a group of fun-lovin’ couples known as “The Study Club.” She was active for many years with her Arboretum Group, her Bridge Club, the Mercer Island Country Club where she enjoyed playing tennis, her “Friday Lunch Bunch” who for a while jointly owned a racehorse of that same name (she claimed they broke even racing her at Longacres), and more recently her Book Club at Hood Canal. She also loved Tupperware and kitchen gadgets, as we were reminded while cleaning out her kitchen! Her many other loves included flowers, Masterpiece Theatre, good books, crossword puzzles, making cookies, Abby (her cat), and her family and friends. We will all miss seeing her beautiful smile light up her face, her dignity and class, and her wonderful way of showing her love for us through her actions, whether cooking a meal, sewing an elaborate Halloween costume, wrapping a present, arranging flowers, or baking cookies; she infused all she did for us with grace, creativity, and loveliness. Her new home in our hearts will be a place we visit often. Mom was preceded in death by her son David in 2005, and she is survived by her husband, Al; sister and brother, Trudy Slingland (Bob) and Oscar Sandberg, Jr. (Lois); children, Brian Adams (Kathy), Cameon Geyer (Bill), Cathy Taylor (Wayne); grandchildren, Jordan Taylor (Michelle), Lindsey Adams Buchanan (Matt), Amy Taylor Lefotu (Dan), Riley Taylor (Bhritney), Nick Taylor (Anna), Dashiell and Daulton Geyer; and great-grandchildren Aurelia, Florence, and Atticus Taylor. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 25th at Calvary Fellowship Church in Mountlake Terrace (23302 56th Avenue West) at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception. More solar energy workshops set City’s ‘Solarize campaign’ nets more neighbors By Celina Kareiva

The City’s Solarize Mercer Island campaign held another successful workshop Tuesday evening, after the first free learning session drew crowds of 65 people. Thirty were registered as of the Reporter deadline on Monday. Forty five registered for free site assessments. Ric Power, who lives just north of Homestead Field, counts himself among the pioneering bunch. Since May of last year, the installation, which faces due South, has generated more than 9,400 Kilowatt hours (kWh). His house has consumed just five kWh of that energy generated, returning more than 6,000 kWh to the grid. “When I was looking at this [last year], a couple of family members said

‘it’s overcast all the time,’” remembers Power of the common misconception that cloudy skies mean solar panels aren’t feasible in the Pacific Northwest. “But I started to look into it. Germany has the same weather as we do. Overcast skies just means you need more panels, it doesn’t mean it can’t be done.” The goal, says Power, who owned for 25 years Island Graphic Design, is to create a zero carbon footprint and it’s far from the first e c o friendly p r o j ect he’s Ric Powers, i nv e s t e d Solar pioneer in. By recruiting Islanders in groups, the city hopes to connect them with discounted deals on bulk installations, between 10 and 15 percent off regular pricing. On Monday, City Council set July 21 as a public meeting to review – for the second time – the Coval long plat. It will consider and either adopt or reject the Planning Commission’s recommendations from June. But while the developer, MI 84th Limited Partnership, has revised its original plans, including dropping the number of lots from 18 to 16, many neighbors still have concerns about the project advancing. “I still think that’s too many homes,” said neighbor Sue Stewart, who lives south of the property, overlooking what is now the Coval’s back garden and orchards. “I’d like to see fewer homes.” A Planning Commission meeting last month ended with the unanimous approval of the revised application with three conditions attached, including an extension of the stormwater pipe along 84th and an increased setback for side-yards from a minimum of 7.5 to 10 feet along the north boundary. The Planning Commission

also asked that raingarden maintenance be the responsibility of the Homeowners Associations instead of lot owners. State Launches new boating information app Boaters who want to find out where to launch their boats or tie up for a weekend on the water can do so now through Washington Water Cruiser, a new app launched by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO). The app, for Apple and Android devices, is free. It maps all state-owned boat launches and moorage sites open to the public, along with amenities for boaters at each site. “This app brings together information from three state agencies,” said Kaleen Cottingham, director of the Recreation and Conservation Office. “It has information on boat launches, moorage slips and pumpout locations, in both eastern and western Washington, from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Recreation and

Conservation Office.” The map-based app was created by SmartMine, the technology development team at GeoEngineers, using a grant RCO received from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It provides aerial, street map and nautical chart views for boaters throughout the state. “This app will be really helpful to a lot of boaters,” said George Harris, president of the Northwest Marine Trade Association, the nation’s largest regional marine association. “In the past, you’d have to carry a couple of cruising manuals or visit several Web sites to plan an outing. State, Fed agencies offer free, mobile boat-sewage pumpouts to safeguard water quality Reporter Staff

Terry Durfee got the idea of launching a mobile marine pumpout service five years ago, when he and his wife were living aboard a 45-foot cruiser docked at the Newport Yacht Basin on Lake Washington. The nearest pumpout station where he could discharge his sewage holding tank was at Carillon Point, about 10 miles away in Kirkland. “It took two hours and at least $100 in fuel to get there, discharge, and come back,” Durfee recalls. He’d heard that rather than bear that cost, some boaters illegally dumped their sewage in the lake, polluting the water and threatening human health. So Durfee acquired a 300-gallon pumpout boat, which he keeps on call to take up boat sewage anywhere on Lake Washington

and Portage Bay. His service, Terry and Sons, has been an environmental success but, at $30 to $45 per pumpout, an unprofitable part-time business. Rather than shutting down, he turned for help to Pumpout Washington, a partnership of the Washington State Parks Boating Program’s Clean Vessel Act Program and Washington Sea Grant. Washington Sea Grant helped Durfee apply for U.S. Clean Vessel Act (CVA) funding, which the State Parks Clean Vessel Program allocates to educate the boating community and install pumpout stations at marinas and other waterfront facilities throughout the state. On September 18, Durfee and Washington State Parks signed an agreement that will benefit both boaters and water quality in Washington’s most heavily used lake. Durfee will convert his service to a nonprofit and provide free on-site pumpouts to pleasure craft. A CVA grant from Washington Parks will cover 75 per cent of the $300,000 annual budget; the remainder will come from marinas, yacht clubs,

Durfee will continue to serve Lake Washington and Portage Bay, but he wants to protect other popular waterways as well. “We will be expanding into Lake Union and Salmon Bay as equipment becomes available,” he says. “In the future we hope to expand into Puget Sound.” “This will be a wonderful addition to our pumpout network,” says Alan Wolslegel, Washington State Parks’ CVA program manager. “There are for-pay mobile services available, but this is the first time the state is offering service for free. We’re exploring the potential to offer this in Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands and the Straits.” Boats with holding tanks are required by law to pump rather than dump their sewage within three miles of the coast and in all inland waters. Pumping out helps protect the health of swimmers, boaters and shellfish consumers. Raw or poorly treated sewage can spread diseases such as hepatitis and dysentery and infect shellfish with norovirus, which causes a severe and highly contagious

intestinal illness. The federal Clean Vessel Act funds pumpout stations, pumpout boats, floating restrooms, educational outreach and onboard adapters that make pumping cleaner and easier through a tax on the sale of boats, yachts, recreational fishing gear and boat fuel. In addition to distributing the adapters, Washington Sea Grant has used funding from the State Parks Clean Vessel Program to create a Google map showing all 146 CVA pumpout locations in Washington. The map can be accessed using the QR code on the adapters’ instructions or at www.pumpoutwashington. org. The goal of this first of its kind experiment in an urban area is to determine if seismic imaging using ambient noise sources can produce an image of similar quality to what was achieved using a vibration source. If successful, it could pave the way for future studies where access to a vibration truck would be limited by sensitive environmental areas and more rural, road-less pockets of the state.
