Feed the People, Build a Duck Support the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank - Food Drive by bringing non-perishable canned food items to Liberty Park, July 25-27. Instead of just collecting the cans, as is done in traditional food drives, food drive planners and participating supporters will take an artistic approach by creating an interactive duck art piece, named “SalvArte,” that will be built and created throughout the festival. “SalvArte” will take on a life of its own. The more cans donated, the more elaborate and larger the art piece will be. Residents and festival-goers are asked to “feed the people, not the ducks” this summer and assist those in need. Donations can be brought to the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank Information Booth located in Gianini Stadium in Liberty Park (handcrafted arts and crafts vendor area) during festival hours. For information on how to help the local Renton Salvation Army Rotary Food Bank, call 425-255-5969.

Outstanding Service Award Recipient Bonnie Rerecich honored with 2014 OSA Since 1991, the festival’s volunteer Board of Directors has selected an individual or team to receive the Outstanding Service Award (OSA). This year, the Board selected Bonnie Rerecich, not only recognizing her 17+ years of volunteer service on the Board of Directors, but also for the multitude of other ways she has loyally supported Renton’s family festival. Her involvement and support to River Days dates back much further than 17 years. When chatting with Bonnie, she remembers helping “way back when” before River Days was even officially born (1986) and Renton had Western Days. Throughout the evolution of River Days, Bonnie has been instrumental in creative ways to provide activities and features for kids, establishing improved operations for the Art Market (hand-crafted arts and crafts vendor area), and she always provided important input regarding logistics and event layouts. Bonnie Rerecich recently retired after 41 years of public service to the City of Renton. On behalf of the family of Renton River Days, we also say “Thank you Bonnie!” Left to right: Festival Chairman, Carol Janssen and 2014 OSA recipient, Bonnie Rerecich

The festival’s Outstanding Service Award recognizes exemplary pride and dedication towards the continued success of Renton’s community festival, and gratefully acknowledges the commitment and efforts of a volunteer or organized entity who help ensure the legacy of Renton’s festival traditions and community spirit. Past recipients have primarily included well-deserving individuals, but also teams such as the City of Renton Parks and Recreation Departments in 1999, and employees of First Savings Bank Northwest who volunteer in large numbers to help organize, manage, and stage 125+ parade entries along downtown Renton side streets before the start of the parade. Outstanding Service Award recipients include (1991-2014): Doug Kyes, Char Baker, Don Persson, Toni Nelson, Sylva Coppock, Pat Newberry, Joyce Williams, Sam Chastain, City of Renton Park Maintenance & Recreation Divisions, Sandy Chastain, Tim Searing, Jeff Lukins, Chuck Tiernan, Jerry Rerecich, Pat O’Dell, Mark Kotlan, Suzanne Thompson, First Savings Bank Northwest Parade Volunteers, Helenanne Botham, Kiwanis/Lions/Rotary Service Clubs, Norm and Carol Abrahamson, Rene Hart, Kent Phillips (STAR 101.5 FM), and Bonnie Rerecich.

Annual Pancake Breakfast

Sponsored by Harley Exteriors Organized by Renton Lions Club The Renton Lions Club is looking forward to meeting, greeting and serving lots of hungry people at the Annual River Days Pancake Breakfast on Saturday,

July 26, 7:30 - 10:00 a.m., at the Renton Senior Activity Center. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, fruit cup, juice and coffee or tea. Prices are $6.00 for adults, and $4.00 for seniors and children under 12. Come fill your tummies before the grand parade and help the Lions Club fund their community projects. The public is invited to bring donations of used eyeglasses and hearing aids, non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank, clean and bagged items for the Renton Clothing Bank, and towels and blankets for the Humane Society.

Volunteer at River Days IKEA Renton River Days is looking for volunteers during festival weekend to help with various children’s activities, art-related events, to help keep the park clean and litterfree, and to help with the parade. If you’d like to volunteer, please email Sharon Murphy, Assistant Volunteer Coordinator at rrdvolunteer@comcast. net. Most tasks are outdoors and require physical ability. You can also visit www.rentonriverdays.org for festival volunteer information and to download a festival volunteer application. While most of the opportunities are intended for those 16 years and older, there may be positions available for those under 16. IKEA Renton River Days is jam-packed with events, entertainment, recreation, arts and food for all to enjoy. Volunteering for the festival is one of the most fun and rewarding ways to get involved. Come be a part of the team!
