Marketing the Region - Vital for our Economic Success

By Samantha Bowers, EASC Economic Alliance Snohomish County (EASC) continues it’s work to successfully establish Snohomish County’s role as a local, regional, and national leader for economic vitality. With this in mind, we have set the following as our strategic goals for 2014-2015: market the region, attract new investment, improve quality of place, respond to employer needs, connect regional leaders, and engage the community.

Over the next few months we are releasing features in the HBJ on some of these strategic goals and how we work toward achieving them for Snohomish County. So, what does it mean to market the region?

Locally We stay informed on accomplishments and unique features that our county

has to offer, and we work to be sure that every business that calls Snohomish County home knows that this is truly the best place to do business.

Regionally / Statewide By understanding our county thoroughly, we inform leaders across the Puget Sound of our successes and why we deserve a “seat at the table” at all high-level meetings and decision making sessions. We spread the word that our local economy is the 2nd most vital to our entire state and make certain that we, as a county, not only have a voice in Olympia but that legislators understand why that voice matters.

Nationally We promote Snohomish County through a variety of nation-wide activities, including speaking with companies looking to relocate or expand, marketing the County at tradeshows, and conducting targeted advertising. Every year we lead a group of key decision-makers to Washington DC to inform government officials about our county’s needs and remind them of the vital role we play in Washington State and the entire nation.

Internationally We host and participate in high-level meetings with leaders around the world including Japan, China, France, and the UK. We stay in close communication with our international partners and work with trusted business leaders on how we can constantly improve our marketing and communication with international companies.

In a relatively short period of time, our

strategic marketing has given Snohomish County its voice back. If it weren’t for the work of EASC, along with the support of our investors and strategic partners, our vibrant community would still be overlooked in all that it has to offer.

Speaking with a unified voice in pursuit of our strategic goals enables Snohomish County to build upon its position of strength.

Frontier’s purchase, four years later Top exec sees investment, customer service as key

EVERETT — Last winter, Frontier Communications’ west region president, Melinda White, sent out a holiday greeting to the hundreds of thousands of customers in her service area.

She included an email address asking for people to feel free to contact her.

“Some might say, ‘Are you nuts?’ Do you really want to put yourself out there to all of the customers?” White said. “Within Frontier, because of our values and culture and our focus on the customer, it was just a natural.

“Everybody understood that’s exactly what we want to do.”

Hundreds and hundreds of people responded, White said.

“I received compliments, concerns, questions, ‘can’t-believe-you-madeyourself-available-likethis,’ all kinds of comments,” White said. “We responded to every single one.”

Four years ago on July 1, Frontier took over 4.8 million landlines from Verizon in 14 states including Washington to become the largest provider of telecommunications in rural and suburban areas of the United States.

The company provides telephone, Internet and video services to more than 210,000 customers in Washington, operating from Snohomish County to the Canadian border, including most of Skagit, Island and Whatcom counties.

Frontier maintains a regional headquarters in Everett and is one of the city’s largest employers with 564 employees. (The Herald moved into the same building as Frontier

White is in charge of more than 2,000 employees in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Montana.

In June, at an interview in the executive boardroom of Frontier’s Everett headquarters, White, who is based in Oregon, said her company’s principles include being committed to customer service and investing in the business.

The holiday greeting — and the invitation for people to contact her — was an example of the company’s commitment to customer service.

She hoped it sent a message not only to customers but also employees.

“It showed the employees that leadership understands the value of the customer and it also showed the customer that if there’s

As for investments in the business, White said Frontier has spent $214 million in the past three years in Washington alone to upgrade its network, provide new products and technology and broaden its reach.

She said the Verizon properties had just a 68 percent broadband reach.

Today, the company has a national broadband reach of 85 percent, White said.

In Washington, that number is closer to 95 percent.

She said the company

also is making investments in technology aimed at helping businesses. One of those investments is an increasing access to Ethernet, a type of high-speed network.

Conventional broadband service receives data at a higher capacity than it can send. Ethernet receives and sends data at the same speed both ways, which is appealing to businesses.

She said that many businesses don’t know that Frontier is a major provider of equipment, from phone systems to cabling.

She said the company believes strongly in the

landline business, because “it’s really the foundation for that credibility, reliability and service level for the network that you then build on.”

“When we go into a commercial office, the first thing our rep does is eye the phone system,” White said. “How many small-, medium-sized customers have a phone system that it’s amazing it works?”

And the company is developing other technology to help businesses, including Frontier AnyWare, a cloud-based data and voice system. Frontier is also working with Seat-

tle company ZipWhip to enable businesses to accept text messages on landlines.

One of the major issues affecting telecommunications companies at the moment is net neutrality.

The Federal Communications Commission is considering allowing Internet service providers to charge extra to companies like Google and Netflix for greater capacity.

The concern is that larger companies will have faster speeds but smaller companies will end up with slower speeds.

Frontier doesn’t have plans to create a tiered system that would prioritize any business. But the company is in favor of being able to have more control over what it can do with its own network.

“I just mentioned earlier how much money we’ve invested in the network and that’s just for the state of Washington,” White said. “As the investor and builder of our network, I think it’s fair for us to have a say in how that network is utilized.”

Shortly after the Verizon acquisition, Frontier’s stock climbed to $9.73 a share. Then it fell steadily to a low of $3.74 a share in May 2012. It has since grown steadily to $5.74 a share last month.

White has been working with Frontier for 9½ years and was at the company’s corporate headquarters in Connecticut before the Verizon acquisition. She said the purchase has been good for the company.

She noted the company’s revenues have been healthy. The company earned $101.2 million in net income in the year ending in March.

White started as west region president a year ago. In the first three to four months, she traveled to meet with every employee and shake each of their hands.

“I know that is the ticket to success,” White said.

“If you want to take care of the customer then you engage with those who touch the customer every day.”

WSU takes over University Center Student applications have jumped with the changeover

Washington State University brings its prestige — and an expanded lineup of courses — when it takes control July 1 of the University Center at Everett Community College.

WSU will lead the center, which brings together several universities and colleges that offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs on the community college campus.

“We’ve been working with Everett Community College and other partner institutions to make this a seamless transition,” said Paul Pitre, dean at WSU North Puget Sound at Everett.

This fall, WSU is starting three new four-year programs in hospitality management, communications and electrical engineering, with the latter already full.

The University Center is expected to add thirteen degree programs between 2014 and 2017, the majority of which will be from WSU. The changeover and added classes is already generating interest.

“Applications are almost three fold to a year ago,” Pitre said.

It’s not the branch campus sought by community leaders for decades.

But it’s a giant step in that direction.

“It’s important to keep in perspective that we have been hopeful for 30 years,” said Bob Drewel, interim chancellor of WSU North Puget Sound at Everett and former EVCC President. “And that’s what WSU presents.”

While WSU has been part of the University Center for years, the university’s name at the top

of the masthead resonates not only with students but also in the halls of Olympia.

Last year, the Legislature set aside $10 million for the design of a new facility for the University Center on the campus.

The Legislature has also provided support to increase the number of faculty and students in engineering and computer science.

Another idea they are working on for the next legislative session is the possibility of a school in advanced management in aerospace, Pitre said.

“This would be the first kind of school for this University Center,” Pitre said.

The school would be an amalgamation of various engineering programs and other areas that support advanced manufacturing and aerospace.

“If there is funding available for these degree programs, it gives faculty reassurance that programs are viable,” Pitre said. “If we have the resources it usually takes about a year to get a program like that off the ground.”

The changes and academic offerings will have an important impact on the business community in and around Snohomish County, Drewel said.

“And just as exciting is what we are planning to do in the future,” he said The University Center is already developing relationships with partners for programs that look to needs in the future such as food agriculture that impacts Skagit, Island and Snohomish counties.

One of the questions discussed before adding programs is how they might match up with the economics of the region.

“And just as exciting is what we’re planning to do in the future.”

Members of the Economic Alliance Snohomish County view their role as advocacy by helping facilitate and making sure vital issues such as transportation, education and world class infrastructure remain part of the dialogue, said Chris Knapp, chief legal officer for The Everett Clinic and chairman of Economic Alliance’s board of trustees.

“We are really, really pleased to see higher education institutions working cooperatively to see this happen,” Knapp said.

“The alliance is excited at the opportunity of having WSU embedded in the community in a meaning-

ful way.”

All of the colleges and universities working under the University Center umbrella is positive. But it hasn’t always been that way.

Western Washington University and the University of Washington are part of the consortium and were concerned their share of enrollment slots may be jeopardized once WSU is fully in command.

They tried unsuccessfully to get state lawmakers to make sure their slots are not touched.

Each university in the consortium manages applications, enrollment

and degree programs while EVCC manages the facility.

Still, the new programs are a great opportunity for students who for family or financial reasons might not want to go north, south, or east, said Pat McClain, governmental affairs director at the City of Everett.

“Since the middle 90s we were in betweeners,” McClain said.

Students wishing to attend universities for a four-year degree had to leave Snohomish County to do so.

“It’s not just a class, it’s a program,” McClain said. “I think it’s huge.”

Electric Mirror finds its niche Company expects $50 million in sales, marketing mirrors to luxury hotels, homes

She stops at Patrick Erickson, the company’s chief engineer, who designed

checkout stands before he came to Electric Mirror nine years ago.

“We found him on Craigslist,” Faith Mischel says. “He’s been an engineering genius in a quiet manner, just coming up with all these ideas.”

Then she adds: “The famous thing he’s good for is he’s a daddy, he’s a daddy.”

She is the wife of Jim Mischel Sr. who came up with the idea for Electric Mirror and the mother of Jim Mischel Jr., who founded the company.

It’s a family-owned company and family and faith are important to the Mischels.

“It’s a very unique atmosphere here that you don’t experience in other manufacturing facilities, as far as what I’ve been exposed to, as far as the level of respect

and family values,” Erickson says. “Their family values obviously bring a lot to the table.”

Their company is changing the mirror from something that Aaron Mischel hangs on the wall to a device that does far more.

In its march of innovation, Electric Mirror went from creating defogging mirrors to lighted mirrors to ones that feature televisions and Bluetooth technology so that people can watch shows in the bathroom or play their music without a docking station.

Their products are fast becoming stan-

dard for high-end hotels, luxury suites at sport stadiums and homes for the rich.

Electric Mirror has seen a rapid growth in the past couple of years, with revenues growing by more than 40 percent in the past three years. The company expects sales to exceed $50 million this year.

To meet the demand, the company has hired more than 100 employees in the past year to grow to 260. In need of space, the company housed in a 50,000-squarefoot factory in south Everett has added a neighboring 25,000-square-foot warehouse a year and a half ago.

And they’re considering constructing a new building to house their entire operations.

built at the factory from the mirror fabrication to the metal frame to the electric wiring and even to the crate in which it is shipped.

“You do come to work and you see amazing people doing very creative things and you see the lives that are blessed,” said Jim Mischel Jr., who is president and CEO. “I would say we’re a start-up company still, because we have a long ways to grow. Our goal is to be the biggest company in Everett outside of Boeing.”

The original idea for the company came in the 1990s when Jim Mischel Sr. — a dentist who goes by the nickname Doc — was taking a shower and couldn’t see his face in the mirror.

So he suggested that they needed a mirror defogger and his son thought it sounded like a great idea for a business.

At the time, Jim Mischel Jr. was attending law school at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va. “Every year during law school, I worked on the business plan for this company,” he said. “While everyone was off doing their legal internships, I was like, ‘Let’s work on the business plan.’ I reworked the business plan way too many times.”

After he graduated from law school, Jim Mischel Jr. lived with his parents, doing a little legal work while trying to get his business started.

“The first three years I lived in my parent’s basement and did this 14 hours a day,” Jim Mischel Jr. said. “I think my only friend was our dog Rocky.”

At first, Jim Mischel Jr. attempted to sell the mirrors defoggers at hardware stores. But he gained little traction. He and his brother Aaron, would travel to trade shows trying to find a market for their defogging mirrors often staying in their car during trips.

“We were struggling to find products to sell, mirror defoggers, people used them, but it wasn’t on a level where we could make a profit,” Jim Mischel Jr. said.

The company continued for years, but struggled.

“They’d get an order like they were real professional and then they’d hang up and they’d dive across the floor like, ‘Thank you God,’” Faith Mischel said.

In 2002, a French chain Hotel Sofitele asked them if they could make 350 lighted mirrors for their hotel in Montreal.

At the time, Electric Mirror was working with an outside company. When the outside company sent the mirrors to the hotel in Montreal, 75 percent of them were broken.

It was an important moment. The company could either close or use all their profits repairing the mirrors.

“I actually thought we would shut the company down after we spent all the money to fix it because there would be no money left,” Jim Mischel Jr. said.

He and his brother and his dad went to Montreal, set up shop in the basement of the hotel and went to work for the summer, repairing scratches, patching the wiring and putting the mirrors back together.

It convinced them that this product was worth the effort.

“That’s where we decided after spending a whole summer fixing every lighted mirror that’s where I came home and told the guys we’re a lighted mirror manufacturer,” Jim Mischel Jr. said.

But it was a product without a market.

— Jim Mischel Jr. “At the time, you have to understand that a hotel was spending $50 on a mirror and $50 on sconces,” Aaron Mischel said. “So their budget was $200 at most.

So we’re trying to push on them an $800 lighted mirror.”

They marketed to luxury hotels that wanted to offer new, unique experiences to customers. Their work at the Hotel Sofitele was the first entry in their resume. Others would soon follow, creating a trend in the hospitality industry.

And an advantage that they had: As a family-owned company, they’re able to take custom orders that larger manufacturers aren’t able to do. It appeals to the people who are designing luxury hotels.

“Designers automatically when they see big companies like that they put them in a box,” Aaron Mischel said. “They want custom.”

In the past 10 years, their engineers have expanded on the idea of lighted mirrors to include mirrors with televisions, wireless stereo systems and dimmable lights. As the market has grown, the company has grown.

They’ve add sales offices in London, Dubai and Hong Kong. Electric Mirror has almost 300 showrooms in the United States and Canada.

Jim Mischel Sr., who continues as the company’s chairman, insists that their product be made in this country.

“One theme that I think is important that we established since the very beginning is that we’re USA made, we’re a true U.S. manufacturer,” Jim Mischel Jr. said.

“We’re a sheet metal shop, we’re a electronic shop, we’re a glass shop and we’re a wood shop.”

And the family credits their faith for their success. Jim Mischel Sr. and Faith attend church at Judah Praise Center in Marysville. Their kids go to City Church in Lynnwood.

Bible verses are written on billboards on the wall’s of the company’s manufacturing floor. One billboard reads “Jesus

Christ is Lord over Electric Mirror.”

Every one of their mirrors has Deuteronomy 8:18 printed on the back.

“It’s probably unique for a lot of people to see. I know for the owners of this business, we feel accountable to God for doing the best for our employees and the best for our customers and treating everyone like they’re made in the image of God,” Jim Mischel Jr. said The company also offers a prayer request box in its offices and specially made fortune cookies with blessings on the back are offered in the lobby.

“We’re providing jobs, but we’re changing people’s lives,” Jim Mischel Jr. said. “If there’s anything closer to the American dream, I don’t know what it is.”

Losing big at the Tulalip casino General manager at resort drops 112 pounds

TULALIP — Samuel Askew plans to run in the Yankee Doodle Dash in Everett on the Fourth of July with his 14-year-old daughter Elizabeth or “Biz” as he calls her.

The run will be a celebration for Askew, who just lost 112 pounds.

The Tulalip Resort Casino general manager has dropped the weight since last March through healthier eating and exercise.

And he wants to lose another 30 pounds.

Askew and his wife joke that it’s a mid-life crisis.

“I didn’t go out and buy a sports car, or anything crazy like that, I just wanted to get healthy,” Askew said.

In all seriousness, his wife Salli Askew could see how his lifestyle was affecting him.

“Maybe seeing the photos of himself on the fridge prompted him, seeing really how much weight he gained and realizing that he had not been able to participate in life with the kids,” she said.

Askew has been at the Tulalip Resort Casino for the past three years and has been managing casino properties around Washington for years.

In 2010, Askew was named Washington State General Manager of the Year by the Washington Lodging Association and was also named Innkeeper of the Year by the Kitsap Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Those awards came with a price. Askew was always the first one in the office, and the last one to leave at night. That, combined with poor eating habits, affected his health greatly.

“I’m a workaholic and a stress eater. I would get up early in the morning, be in the office between 6:30

and 7 a.m. No breakfast.

No lunch.

“Just snacking with sodas and whatever else was there. Then I would get home late at night and I would be starving, so I would gorge myself.

I would go to bed and do it all over again next day,” Askew said.

With his health deteriorating, he knew if he didn’t do things differently now, he might not live long enough to make the changes at all.

“I had topped out at 337 pounds, I had to use a C-PAP machine to sleep, and I was on copious amounts of blood pressure medicine,” he said.

With hypertension, diabetes, and cancer on both sides of his family, Askew felt as if the cards were stacked against him.

Struggling with his weight since about age 9, Askew wanted something

better for his children, Elizabeth, and Tommy, 11.

“It was really my kids.

I wanted to be around for them. I wanted to see them grow up, fall in love, get married and have kids.

“But I knew I needed to make a change in myself in order to be there for them,” said Askew.

Askew started with little changes like eating breakfast and lunch, curbing his appetite at night.

His next step was to make simple changes like eating apple chips instead of potato chips, and drinking water instead of diet soda.

After losing 20 pounds, Askew thought maybe he could start exercising. He began to attend the YMCA of Marysville where he would at least swim every day.

The first three or four months were the hardest for Askew in terms of crav-

ings, but the weight continued to melt off.

Knowing he had made a long-term lifestyle change, Askew didn’t want to have anything to fall back on so said he got rid of his “fat pants” as he would call them.

“I knew how easy it would be to slip back. The wardrobe left the house because I was too tempted.

If I had a pair of pants that I could fit when I was a 54-inch waist, it would be too easy to slip back,” said Askew.

Working out every single day became a compulsion for Askew, to the point where he said he might have been overdoing it.

He eventually found his balance, even having the ability to incorporate some of what he was learning about healthy habits into Tulalip’s spa program.

“What it is basically is a

spa club. You can become a member of the Healthy Living Alliance, which gives you access to fitness facilities at the resort and the opportunity for regular treatments,” said Askew.

Tulalip also has fitness and health opportunities for team members working for the casino and resort.

“Tulalip has always been very good about taking care of their team members in that respect. We have a gym here at the resort that is specific for team members, free of charge every day all day,” said Askew.

Even so, it’s difficult to go to work in an environment with buffets and tempting food around every corner.

“I go to events, host events, and the food here is so delicious. But that’s the thing, too. We have

amazing food here that is healthy, so it became part of that healthy living.”

He enjoys most of all the positive changes he is seeing in his children.

“In the past, the evenings were spent vegetating in front of the TV, where as now we go to the YMCA as a family. I have more quality time with my children and wife, even my son has lost 10 to 15 pounds himself,” said Askew.

Salli also started making some simple changes. “I’ve lost about 27 pounds just from changing the way I eat.”

The couple are high school sweethearts. And Askew has a simple plan for the two of them in the future.

“As corny as this sounds, it took 18 years for my wife and I to get married, and know for certain we wanted to grow old together,” Askew said. “I really wanted to sit on the porch some place as an old man with my wife.

“If I continued on the path I was I wouldn’t have had that opportunity.”

800 herd of cattle, 400 to 500 sheep and about 100 head of hogs.

Right now, farmers usually sell their livestock at auction in Centralia, Everson or Toppenish. Or they sell their meat directly to customers under a state Department of Agriculture program called “custom exempt.”

What the cooperative is aiming to do is set up a way to produce enough meat to be sold on a scale that can compete with the larger companies.

“If we can have producers working together we can have enough animals and animals at different

times of the year that we can go out to the stores and the restaurants and other institutions,” said Matheson, who has as many as 120 head of cattle a time at her farm north of

Individually farmers don’t have the time or level of expertise to organize a multi-farmer owned organization or to figure out how to coordinate production and relationships with markets and institutions.

As a cooperative, they’re able to lean on the Northwest Agriculture Business Center to assist them.

There are more than a million people that reside in the counties covered by the cooperative.

National consumption data provided by the USDA showed that residents in the county consumed the equivalent of 140,000 beef cows,

300,000 hogs, and 28,000 lamb in 2012, Voltz said.

Less than 2 percent of that meat is currently produced in the four counties.

The farmers in the cooperative figure that a North Cascades Meat brand ties neatly into the local food movement, Voltz said.

“The average item in a grocery store has traveled 1,500 miles,” Voltz said.

“We can’t continue to go on with that model with the cost of oil and energy.”

The cooperative is seeking more farmers to participate. The only farm participating from Snohomish County has resigned from the cooperative.

“We know there’s a good level of interest in Snohomish County,” Voltz said.

Almost all of the meat consumed in Snohomish County is produced outside of the Puget Sound region and most of it comes from just a handful of companies.

Now a cooperative representing farmers in Snohomish, Skagit, Island and Whatcom counties wants to do something about that.

They’ve pulled together to start producing and marketing a North Cascades Meat brand to be sold in grocery stores, restaurants and farmers markets.

The goal is to have the brand available to stores and restaurants by summer 2015.

“There’s a big local food movement that’s been going on for a decade or so and it’s not losing any steam,” said Jeff Voltz, project manager for the nonprofit Northwest Agriculture Business Center in Mount Vernon.

To help the farmers, the business center has received a $123,633 grant from the United State Department of Agriculture to pay for part of the costs of building a mobile processing unit to travel to the farms and slaughter livestock.

Del Fox Meats in Stanwood has agreed to operate the unit and build a USDA inspected plant to process the meat into something that can be sold. The cooperative includes about 27 farmers from around the four counties who have about

In an economy that can be harsh for small businesses, two young entrepreneurs are dealing with quite the opposite.

Snohomish County locals Connor Cave and Craig Davis started their apparel company, Vitalire, out of high school five years ago.

They survived the recession and thrived. They say their company has made a name for itself in the Pacific Northwest because they have taken it deeper than just selling clothes, “We are selling a lifestyle,” Davis said.

Getting their designs from many different sources like local artists and photographers, they aim to capture the true spirit of the Northwest.

The young company is not trying to just create a product for people, they have created a brand, a way of life.

Vitalire has three core principals: sustainability, quality, and community.

Davis says environmental sustainability is extremely important to him.

They quickly grew out of that space and moved to an 1,800-square-foot warehouse by the Arlington airport in 2012.

This move allowed the company to bring in their own screen-printing equipment and shift production to in-house.

The growth of this company didn’t stop there.

“Just over a month ago now we moved into a new warehouse again. This one being 5,500 square feet. So just a huge jump again for us,” said Davis.

Now with two screen printing machines and just over triple the space, the young company is on track to double its revenues from 2013 to 2014 just as it did the previous

year when revenues were up 105 percent, they said.

Most of Vitalire’s revenue comes from their online sales. Davis said they decided early to spend a good amount of money on a successful website.

“Our website has been an ever-evolving project.

We’re always trying to make it better, more efficient, more user friendly,” Davis said.

The website was designed in-house allowing the partners to make sure it matched their brand perfectly and was both easy to use and visually appealing.

All the photographs on the Vitalire website were taken by well-known West Coast photographer, Jordan Ingmire.

Vitalire clothing can also be found in select shops around Washington state but the company is careful when deciding who will carry their products.

“We are fairly picky about who we approach.

We also want to make sure that the shop fits our image.

“And the big things that are important to us are environmental sustainability. We look for people who get it, people who are down to earth and not just trying to make a buck,” Davis said.

Vitalire’s next project is to expand their dealer market, meaning increasing the number of shops that carry their brand.

The clothing costs $24 for a T-shirt and a sweatshirt costs around $45.

They’ve also expanded their product line to board shorts, hats and a new ladies line.

With growth this rapid, it is important for the two entrepreneurs to maintain sustainability.

“The things that have worked for us are: we are always trying so hard to adapt and grow to the next thing, we are never comfortable, always pushing for the next thing, always reinvesting in the company,” Davis said. “It is our biggest goal.”

New Subaru showroom in Marysville

MARYSVILLE — Roy Robinson Chevrolet-Subaru has sold the two brands of vehicles under the same roof since 1982.

On June 28, the dealership opened a new 40,000-square-foot showroom and service facility devoted to the Subaru brand just a short drive from the old lot.

“Our customer base has grown big enough and Subaru’s sales have grown

enough that it just makes sense to do it,” said Mark King, general manager of the dealership.

The new building will mean a shorter wait time for customers who are getting their Subarus serviced or buying a new car, said Gordon Bjorg Jr., dealer-principal for Roy Robinson. And the sales staff at the new building will be focused on the Subaru brand.

“It’s a very exciting time for us,” Bjorg said. “We’re excited to help our customers and create a better experience for them.”

The new showroom located at 6001 33rd Ave. NE, Marysville is the only Subaru dealership in Snohomish County.

The new building features a large customer lounge, a parts department including a place to purchase Subaru gifts and 15 new service bays. The lot has space for 450 cars.

The old lot at 6616 35th Ave. NE will continue to be operated and will focus on Chevrolets. And Roy Robinson will continue to run its RV dealership across lot.

The older lot is scheduled to undergo

a renovation. Still, most of the sales staff wanted to move to the new dealership.

Several dealerships in Snohomish County have undergone renovations in the past couple of years. Rodland Toyota-Scion just finished a $4 million, two-year renovation of its dealership in Everett.

Marysville Ford just broke ground on their new dealership along in north Marysville, south of the Medallion Hotel.

Honda of Marysville opened in the same area earlier this year.

Carr’s Hardware is built to last Family celebrates 90 years with Marysville mainstay

MARYSVILLE — Few businesses are able to boast that they have been around for 90 years and even fewer can say that they are still run by the same family.

Carr’s Hardware in Marysville is one of those few.

Through depressions, recessions and the advent of the big box store, small family-owned and operated Carr’s Hardware at 1514 Third Street has survived.

Four generations have worked in the store — two of those generations learned to walk there on the same wooden floorboards that founder Milford Carr walked on back in 1924.

Milford Carr was a

blacksmith, shoeing horses and working at a forge on Marysville’s First Street. In 1921, he decided to put up a building on Third Street as an investment.

“He built this as a retail store and was trying to rent it out,” explained 82 year-old Darlene Scott, current owner of Carr’s Hardware and daughterin-law of Milford Carr.

Unfortunately, the building didn’t attract any tenants. The longer the property sat vacant, the more desperate Carr became to do something with it.

Then Carr heard about a general store in Mount Vernon that was going out of business and selling all of its stock.

Carr was able to negotiate a good price for the store’s remaining inventory. He brought it down

it. Customers can buy nails or mason jars, bolts or bowls, garden rakes or kitchen gadgets.

While the original cash register was eventually retired to a back office, a vintage 1950’s National cash register is still in daily use up front. Customers often comment on it, amazed that it still works.

Some ask suspiciously if they can use credit cards in the store.

There certainly weren’t any credit cards in those early days when Milford Carr and his two stepsons, Bruce and Howard Scott, were the key workers.

They also weren’t in use when Carr hired pretty 16-year-old Darlene Campbell as a part time employee in 1948.

Darlene caught Bruce Scott’s eye but they didn’t get married until 1951.

As the couple settled down and started a family, Bruce Scott slowly began to realize that he was destined to take over the family business. It hadn’t been his original intention. The Scotts began the process of purchasing the store from Milford Carr.

“It was in 1953 that we doubled the width of the store,” Darlene Scott explained.

That expansion is still visible today. Half of the current store still has the original wood floors and is visibly from a different

era. The Scotts were also able to buy the property behind the store, build a warehouse and add a parking lot so customers wouldn’t have to try and find street parking.

In 1966, the next major change occurred which has probably helped to keep the store in business all these years. Carr’s Hardware became an independently owned member of Ace Hardware.

It was one of the earliest Ace Hardware affiliates on the West Coast.

“Originally it was just a buying group to be able to buy merchandise at more reasonable prices,” explained Gail Libbing, one of the Scott’s three children who is the third generation to work at the family business.

With the power of Ace Hardware behind them, Carr’s Hardware qualifies for much better prices yet they remain independent.

This has enabled them to compete in the current era where big box stores rule the hardware market.

But Libbing doesn’t want anyone to think that they are anti-box store.

After all, Carr’s Hardware doesn’t stock things like kitchen sinks.

“We can get them though,” Gail Libbing pointed out. With the Internet, customers can now order anything online from Ace.com, choose free

shipping to an Ace location and pick up their products from Carr’s Hardware. It’s something that Milford Carr never imagined.

Carr died 1978. His stepson, Bruce Scott, passed away in 1997 leaving Darlene Scott to run the business with the help of daughter Gail Libbing.

About a year ago, Libbing’s husband Maurice joined the business.

Their children, Jessi and Nicholas, grew up in the store, as Gail Libbing did.

In recent years, there have been a few challenges for Carr’s Hardware. One challenge has been letting newer Marysville residents know that they’re there.

The town has grown so much that many people drive right by what was once the downtown corridor.

Another is that the younger generations have grown up going to big box stores. They don’t realize the benefits of going to an old fashioned hardware store where service and knowledge are emphasized.

They also tend to think that small privately owned businesses are going to be more expensive, which often isn’t the case. Still, Carr’s Hardware tends to generate repeat customers once they get the people through the door.

Now that Darlene Scott has worked at the store more than 60 years, the family hopes that she will take some time off.

It’s too early to tell yet whether the fourth generation will take over the store. But Bruce Scott certainly never planned to take over his stepfather’s business.

Gail Libbing never planned to follow in her parent’s footsteps either.

“You start working here because it’s family,” she said. “Then I got married and started having kids and it was a wonderful way to be able to still work and have the kids with me.

Once you got in — that was what you knew.”

But the Libbings have vowed to try and keep Grandpa Carr’s store going at least to its 100th birthday.

“That’s our goal,” Maurice Libbing promised.

Terrace’s Arbor Village draws praise

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Arbor Village opened last year, becoming the first large-scale, mixed-use residential and retail development in the city’s Town Center.

The $19 million development at 23609 56th AVE W. Suite 100 aims to revitalize the city’s downtown core. Arbor Village mixes 123 units with one- and two-bedrooms with eight retail spaces. It was built by Mountlake Terrace’s Afco & Sons under the leadership of CEO Yuko Abe and her family.

Carl Colson of Bothell was the project’s architect. A second architectural firm, Weber Thompson, designed interior units and created the final construction documents.

In late May, Arbor VilCarl Colson lage received a VISION 2040 award from the Puget Sound Regional Council, which gives annual awards to recognize regional innovations in managing growth and sustaining quality of life.

Colson, 59, has worked for 35 years as an architect across the country and started his own firm in 2001. He discussed Arbor Village and the recognition it received.

Q: Arbor Village is the first project of its kind to be developed in Mountlake Terrace’s Town Center. How would you describe it?

A: I see Arbor Village as being a major shot in reinventing or reinvigorating Mountlake Terrace. The city is a diamond in the rough, a great location, close to Seattle, with easy access to a park and ride, with great parks and good schools.

This project has sparked a lot of interest in the downtown center.

Q: What kind of examples does Arbor Village set for others hoping to start and complete similar developments in or near the city of Mountlake Terrace?

A: I think it shows that mixed use projects and multi-family projects with a higher density do appeal to people in our

area and not just 20-somethings in Seattle. I showed this project to a number of major developers in Seattle and they all said no, a project like that doesn’t fly outside the Seattle area.

To my knowledge, all but two of the units are leased right now. It proves that you don’t have to be in South Lake Union or Ballard or even Northgate to have a successful project.

Q: The Puget Sound Regional Council awards are intended to recognize regional innovations in managing growth and sustaining quality of life. How does Arbor Village accomplish these things?

A: I think one of the things about Arbor Village to me is that the style of the building is sort of a classic style. It’s not built in 2013 contemporary mode that may fade out and become somewhat outdated.

The way I interpret 2040 is it also promotes redevelopment within existing areas so we don’t have to keep expanding outwards into the countryside.

Q: What does this recognition mean to you?

A: I was extremely pleased because as a small firm it’s not always you get the chance to work on projects where there’s recognition and I really appreciate the recognition.

I drive by this project three times a week because it’s on the way to where I’m going and I always look and think, ‘Wow, that came out of my head. I designed that.’ It brings me a lot of pride.

Glasair puts teens behind the wrench Students win competition to build plane in two weeks

It’s not every day high school students get to brag that they built an airplane from start to finish in two weeks.

But that’s what four teenagers from Sunrise Mountain High School in Las Vegas get to do.

And Glasair Aviation in Arlington is a large part of that.

Alberto Carlos Alvarado, Joshua Carlson, Kenneth Ellis, and Jose Rodriguez Jr. were the winners of an aviation-based competition where the prize consisted of getting to build a Glasair Sportsman in two weeks, plus lodging and tours of local aviation companies.

The competition is run by General Aviation Manufacturers Association and Build A Plane, which is a nonprofit organization that helps bring aviation and aerospace education to schools.

“During this competition I learned a lot about aviation, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in the future, but now I am sure I want to be a pilot,” said Joshua Carlson, a sophomore.

The Aviation Design Challenge was created to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education among schools in the United States.

This is the second year of this competition and 79 schools from 33 states, including two from Washington, participated in the “virtual fly-off.”

“They learned lessons about STEM and were given aerospace and aviation curricula. At the end of the process, they were given software to design and fly a virtual airplane,” said Mary Lynn Rynkiewicz, director of communications for GAMA. The software used for the competition was created by Fly to Learn, which provides a virtual aviation experience to teach students.

In the competition, each school virtually modified a Glasair Sportsman airplane to fly from one airport to another, and was scored on payload, fuel usage, and flight time.

The students were also required to submit an essay about their experience with STEM education.

Once selected, these four students were flown to Western Washington June 16 to build an airplane in two weeks. Glasair supplies the facility for the build plus two weeks worth of staff to instruct the students. The students worked from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

“It’s a very intense program,” said Nigel Mott, Glasair’s president. “It’s good to have kids with lots of energy, they can usually hang in there.”

Glasair manufactures the GlaStar and Sportsman aircraft kits along with other aircraft components.

Mott said his company’s product is simple to understand. “It’s like those little model kits that you can buy and build at home. Same idea but it’s a real aircraft.”

The company operates out of a 30,000-square-foot facility on the Arlington Municipal Airport and employs around 35 people.

In 2007, Glasair started the “Two Weeks to Taxi” program, which allows

builders to come and spend two weeks at their Customer Assembly Center. This is where they can build their aircraft with all the tools and mounts necessary, alongside professionals. At the end of two weeks, they have a fully functional aircraft.

“This program is unique, there is no one else in the world that offers it,” Mott said.

These four-place aircraft’s base model cost about $189,000 but typically planes go out the door for between $225,000 to $250,000.

Glasair, Boeing, Jeppesen, and Piper are some of the aviation companies interested in getting youth involved in aerospace and aviation.

In terms of the competition Mott had this to say, “It’s important for our company to show that we are supporting youth in aviation, and I think there is a lot of opportunities in this industry. ” At the end of these two weeks, the students will be able to see the aircraft they built being fired up and running.

The Federal Aviation Administration has to inspect the aircraft fully before it can be used in flight, but once that happens Glasair will fly the airplane down to Las Vegas for these kids to get a ride in it.

Rynkiewicz said GAMA is also posting pictures each day of the build so people can actually watch the plane being built on the GAMA Facebook page. “(The studenets) are having a great time so far. It’s really great to see because this build is not something where the professionals do it and the kids watch, it’s the exact opposite,” she said.

And the experience will hopefully last a lifetime.

“This competition is here to ultimately open students eyes to the many career possibilities in general aviation.

Everything from engineering to being a pilot, and also the manufacturing side of things,” said Rynkiewicz.

In 2012, the Penney family was living in Mukilteo. A Menchie’s had opened nearby and Dayna Penney took the kids there for dessert one night. They were back a few nights later. This time, Lila and Cleo held on to the colorful plastic spoons that come with a cup of Menchie’s yogurt. Their parents saw them eating cereal with the spoons the next morning.

“That’s the reason we bought the franchise,” Robert Penney said. “If they had thought of the concept all the way down to the spoons, then it was a good concept.”

The couple had been interested in opening a business — possibly an ice cream shop — but they didn’t know where to start. Neither of them had extensive experience in the restaurant industry.

They had never planned to go the franchise route, but there was something different about Menchie’s.

“We walked into Menchie’s and felt at home there,” Robert Penney said. “Dayna and I approach everything with a smile first and see what happens second. It was like we finally found a concept that realized how important guest care is.”

The Penneys evaluated Seattle for locations but

couldn’t find the right fit.

The Bellingham market, on the other hand, had yet to be tapped into. They opened their first store on Lakeway Drive in April 2012. The sweet tooths of Bellingham came out in droves, vaulting the store into the top-10 performing Menchie’s in the country. Riding that success, the Penneys opened their second store on Bakerview Road in Bellingham in 2013.

So how exactly can a franchise feel like a family business? The Penneys describe it like this: Menchie’s corporate provides the structure and marketing, and the individual family provides the guest service and management to build a local reputation.

The Penneys handle hiring, training, establishing store hours, advertising, customer service and things like donation requests and recycling programs.

The couple also have a say in the product. Dayna Penney swaps out yogurt flavors constantly and posts the current lineup on Facebook every day.

There’s room for 14 flavors across seven stands, each stand with two dispensers and the option to twist the two flavors together. Chemistry mat-

ters. Chocolate and vanilla is a safe bet, but what about banana and marshmallow? Pineapple and

pecan?

BELLINGHAM — With a smile on his face and a satchel over his shoulder, Robert Penney stepped inside Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt on Bakerview Road. He approached a family with two young children and introduced himself.

“I’m the owner,” he said.

“Would you like a balloon animal?”

The kids nodded. Penney swung open his bag and pulled out an air pump.

“A butterfly?” he asked.

“Or a dog? Or a bunny?

Or a sword?”

Meanwhile, his wife, Dayna Penney, made her way to the cash register, where she checked in with employees and eyed the yogurt dispensers.

“He’s the Dorothy and I’m the Wizard,” Dayna Penney said. “He’s the guy out there making the balloon animals and patting everybody up. I’m kind of more behind-the-scenes operations, ordering stuff and making all the pieces fit.”

Founded in 2007, Menchie’s has more than 400 locations from the U.S. to Australia to Japan.

As of 2014, Forbes projected the company to earn $188 million in revenue.

For the Penneys, though, frozen yogurt is a family business. The couple own two stores in Bellingham and visits them every day, overseeing operations and chatting with customers.

Their kids, a peppy pair of elementary-aged girls named Lila and Cleo, help themselves to yogurt, play board games and talk to the staff.

“We hire the employees, we run it on a day-today basis,” Robert Penney said. “It’s a hand-in-hand relationship: corporate provides the look and the branding, we provide the grease and the love.”

“They’re definitely people you can talk to,” she said. “You’re not afraid of them, but you still have this feeling of respect for them as your boss. So it’s not just being a friend — it’s like a friendly parent.”

For Lila and Cleo, Robert and Dayna Penney’s other kids, the rush of having parents who own a frozen yogurt shop seems to be wearing off.

“They always, always talk about Menchies,” said Lila, 11, about her parents.

“All I hear is, ‘There’s a shortage at Bakerview, we need more green apple tart!’”

Her parents have gotten the memo.

“Our New Year’s Resolution this year was to not open another restaurant,” Robert Penney said.

EvCC lands money for aerospace jobs HBJ Staff

EVERETT — Everett Community College and the Center of Excellence for Aerospace & Advanced Manufacturing at EvCC will receive more than $1.5 million in new state funding to train students for aerospace jobs.

The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges awarded the money to EvCC to pay for faculty, curriculum design, equipment and staffing to support aerospace programs.

EvCC is one of 21 community and

technical colleges receiving funding to increase their student capacity in high-demand aerospace programs.

It’s part of $8 million that the Legislature put up to guarantee the Boeing 777X would be built in the state. The funding will create positions for more than 1,000 students across the state. The college programs will support a wide variety of specialties like machining and composite materials manufacturing.

In all, 40 proposals were submitted from 24 colleges for the funding. The programs will begin in the 2014-15

school year.

For EvCC, the money breaks down: ■ $276,080 for 35 additional full-time student slots in engineering, resulting in more math, physics and engineering classes, plus a new engineering lab and updates to a computer lab; ■ $851,904 for 108 additional fulltime student slots in precision machining, funding instruction, curriculum design and equipment for the new precision machining lab at EvCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center, which opens this fall;

■ $310,994 for a router, vacuum system, waterjet table and staffing. The equipment is for EvCC’s new composites lab at the manufacturing training center; ■ $138,725 for theCenter of Excellence for Aerospace & Advanced Manufacturing to coordinate and build a standard composites curriculum; EvCC’s funding request was supported by employers, including Janicki, Primus, Giddens, Onamac, Jamco and Hexcel.

Boeing worked closely with the Center of Excellence to support the development of a standard composites curriculum.

Company seeks to build air terminal

EVERETT — As opponents try to foil Paine Field passenger air service in court, a private investment firm is trying to make it a reality.

New York-based Propeller Investments has asked Snohomish County, which owns and operates the airport, to start discussions leading to construction of a terminal and parking facility at Paine Field.

The private equity firm doesn’t have a formal proposal, but its CEO and founder Brett Smith spoke in June about a possible arrangement in which it would shoulder the risk — leasing land from the airport, financing terminal construction and finding tenant airlines.

He asked county officials to start talks within 30 days.

Passenger air service at Paine Field will encourage economic development and give travelers a more convenient and cheaper alternative to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Bellingham International Airport, he said.

Propeller Investments envisions four or five commercial flights a day to regional destinations, such as Spokane, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles or Long Beach, he said.

Paine Field handles about 300 flights a day, ranging from small single-engine airplanes to big Boeing jetliners rolling out of the Everett assembly plant, which abuts the airport.

That is about onethird of the airport’s flight capacity, said Dave Waggoner, the Paine Field director.

Founded in 2008, Propeller Investments is developing an alternative to Atlanta’s commercial airport, one of the busiest in the world.

The Puget Sound area market could probably support two terminals with regional flights, he said. But “you’re never going to see flights to New York or Tokyo.”

Opponents don’t want to see any passenger

flights at Paine Field and were headed to federal court in June to challenge a Federal Aviation Administration conclusion that noise, traffic and pollution from commercial flights would not hurt nearby communities.

Mukilteo is leading the challenge in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, along with the city of Edmonds and an activist

group of residents, Save Our Communities. If they succeed, the FAA would have to do further analysis, likely delaying attempts to bring passenger flights to Paine Field.

In the meantime, Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson said, “Proponents of air service should understand that it is important to let our case take its course.”

Proponents include Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson.

“After years of debate, it’s time to take advantage of this opportunity and move forward with a plan that helps our economy, builds on our aviation foundation and provides easier access to air travel,” he said in a statement.

Talks about a passenger terminal last year between

the county and Allegiant Air reached an impasse.

The county proposed to build a publicly owned terminal for about $3 million and recoup construction costs from parking and concession revenue. The airline wanted to build, operate and own a terminal on lease-free land.

The Las Vegas-based airline remains interested in Paine Field.

Allegiant and Alaska Airlines are the only two carriers that have expressed interest in serving Paine Field in recent years.

Alaska had said it would be interested only if another airline established service first. Today, “there are a number of airlines interested” in Paine Field, Smith said.

“They’d kill me if I put their names out there.”

Clad in SWAT teamlike headgear and carrying a long black gun, my intrepid 9-year-old daughter recently entered the world of low-impact paintball.

I’ll admit it. I was worried.

Lucy is small and a love bug but she can also be a whiner and a mini-drama queen.

So I knew a trip to Doodlebug Sportz in Everett for children’s paintball would be a test for her.

The family-owned Doodlebug Sportz started in 1999. The company has two locations, an Indoor Paintball Arena at 3303 McDougall Ave., Everett, and an Outdoor Paintball Park at 9600 115th Ave SE, Snohomish.

Most of the sessions use regular paintball guns.

Eighteen months ago, Doodlebug Sportz started offering low-impact paintball for kids ages 6 to 12 or for women who want to play the sport without the bruises.

Staff at Doodlebug Sportz greeted us with smiles when we arrived for the monthly low-impact paintball session.

There were approximately 40 children in attendance — mainly boys — all revved up and ready to go.

Children and parents listened intently to demonstrations on how to keep safe. Participants are encouraged to ask questions. The eager children, Lucy included, made their way to the paintball area, which features two indoor fields.

One area has a castle rampart at one end and various large filled cushion triangles, squares and blocks for hiding and cover.

Lucy was soaking everything in and ready to see what all the fuss was about.

She admitted to being nervous and said she might be a teeny bit scared.

That didn’t last long.

In she went to the castle area and soon Lucy went from peeking behind the large solid beanbag, taller than her, to jumping out and firing at anyone she could see.

I could swear she aimed at me as I was trying to take photographs.

She said it wasn’t her.

Of course not.

With so many kids firing at once it was hard to

tell if my little novice hit anyone.

It was clear when she got hit herself. With paint in her hair, on her sleeve and hip, she held up her hands in the arena and came out looking very triumphant.

“I’ve been hit mom!” she shouted with glee.

“I’ve been hit!”

A now sweating Lucy was delighted.

“It’s really fun and doesn’t hurt,” she said shrugging her shoulders.

“A small sting then it goes away.”

boys and one girl to celebrate with him.

The family had been to the venue for laser tag and everyone enjoyed their time. When they found out about the low-impact paintball, they wanted to give it a try.

“He’s so happy,” Billie Foote said.

Doodlebug Sportz general manager Danny Cort said that the low-impact version allows parents to bring younger kids.

“It is just geared toward the kids to make it a

non-aggressive environment,” Cort said.

It’s worth noting that guns for adults are bigger than those for children.

The paintball size for kids is two-thirds the size of a .68 caliber one for grown ups. Kids will feel the hit but there is a much smaller impact than the standard-size paintball.

Tonia Dresher from Lynnwood brought along daughters Alexis, 10, and Rachel, 11.

It was the first visit for the girls who come from a family who all enjoy paintballing. When Dresher’s son was 12-years-old, the family enjoyed their first paintball experience. He is now 16 and paintball is a fun part of family life throughout the year.

“If you have the chance I would do it,” Rachel Dresher said. “It hurts but it’s fun.”

When the final rounds were announced, a resounding “NO!” was heard at the suggestion of boys versus girls at the castle area.

No damsel in distress is my girl. No, Lucy took her a spot behind a huge bag cushion. She darted out, surveying the scene with precision, aimed her weapon and … got splattered three times.

It was hands up again and out she came.

“Oh man!” she exclaimed, her head hanging. “That was fun.”

Wait times should sound alarm bells T

he Veterans Affairs hospital mess is still under investigation but it is clear that willful deceit played a significant role in the mismanagement of veterans’ medical care and its disgraceful, sometimes tragic consequences.

In addition to the deceit, however, it appears that there was a widespread management misunderstanding of what waiting lists and wait-times do for and to an organization.

This kind of misunderstanding is not unusual in organizations, public or private — although deceit, happily, is less prevalent.

Waiting for something or someone is part of modern life for most of us.

It isn’t always bad; being wait-listed for college admission keeps hope alive, as does being put on standby for a flight that would get you home in time for some birthday cake.

But waiting is a waste of time. We are impatient and we don’t like waiting, but there it is, take it or leave it. For many different reasons, people sometimes prefer to take it.

Young people wait patiently behind the velvet ropes and gatekeepers to gain admittance to an “in” nightclub.

Parents or grandparents will wait for hours in line to get tickets to a Disney World attraction for their kids, or for a lottery ticket that allows the winner to buy a child’s dress based on a “Frozen” character costume.

The reason why these young people, parents, and grandparents will wait in these lines is uncomplicated: at the end of the line there is something they want, something they value more than their

time and cannot get anywhere else.

Military veterans, too, will wait for weeks or even months to see a physician at a VA hospital, mostly for a different reaJames son: they have no McCusker alternative.

Retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver Business North recently 101 described his experience with VA medical care after he was diagnosed with cancer.

He got so tired of waiting, and concerned about the impact of delay on his health that he sought and received successful treatment at a private hospital — an option he had because his current employment contract included health care insurance.

The VA hospital situation should not have required whistleblowers. The waiting times at the VA should have set off alarm bells throughout the organization, but they didn’t.

Possibly the VA and everyone else in government had gotten so used to delays and waiting lists that they were accepted as normal, a substitute for productive capacity.

This also happens in the private sector, but businesses that do not hear the alarm bells set off by waiting lists and lead times do not last long in a competitive environment. In the private, business sector, most customers have alternatives and are

It is apparently human nature for people within an organization to move inefficiencies out of their area of responsibility and into the fuzzy area of lead times and to blame it all on capacity problems — the equivalent of putting customers on hold.

That is why management consultants are especially alert when they hear the word “normal” applied to things like customer order processing lead times, shipping delays, and aging delivery schedules.

Some managers, too, consider lead times as a substitute for capacity or efficiency.

Waiting lists, wait times or other delays are usually a symptom of problems at one or more stages in the process of satisfying customer demand.

A pizza restaurant might have a production problem due to a mismatch between oven capacity and peak demand, for example.

A distribution center might experience shipping backups because of a procurement system foul-up that leaves the warehouse chronically short of the right sized boxes.

Turnover in the order-entry team may cause shipping delays and returns due to address errors or incorrect product identification.

There are some products that are so complex and resource-consuming that long lead times are simply accepted as a kind of industry standard.

Large passenger jet aircraft like those developed by Boeing and Airbus, are examples of this kind of product, and in those industries customers have to place orders months, even years before delivery — especially for newly developed models.

Customers accept that, but consider delivery delays another matter entirely.

That can make them very unhappy, sometimes even unforgiving.

If you are the CEO, you have to stay on top of the areas that can create delays and cause customer dissatisfaction.

It doesn’t hurt to take a few customer service calls yourself every week, so that you understand the problems and what went wrong.

Take each unhappy customer as a challenge; fix the problem and convert their unhappiness into appreciation for how much you and your company care about them and about getting it right.

Then fix the source of the problem so it doesn’t happen again.

ost of us take care of our stuff.

We get the oil changed in our cars. We get our furnaces serviced and our air ducts cleaned.

And, of course, we have our annual physicals and other preventive health care. But there is one area of our lives we always tend to ignore: that’s our technology.

Technology, like anything else, needs to be maintained.

The problem is that most technology platforms don’t make these updates simple or intuitive.

Worse yet, installing these updates can take time, costing productivity.

Or updates can cause important features to stop working.

Yet not installing critical updates can cause features to stop working or even leave your systems open to attack. A real Catch-22.

Larger companies have an IT person (or department) that stays on top of

the latest updates and patches and who manage their deployment.

But the average small business owner or homeowner is left to figure things out on Sven their own.

And one wrong Mogelgaard move can cause hours of downTech Talk time and plenty of frustration.

Thankfully, the majority of software updates are benign.

They alert the user that they’re available and then install themselves when given approval.

But once again, it takes time to install these updates.

Often a system restart is required, which further disrupts the user’s work or

play.

This disruption makes it easy to disregard these upgrade notifications.

Other updates rarely — if ever — tell you they’re available. Cell phones, tablets, and computer motherboards often need updates, but the user typically isn’t notified.

So how does the average user stay on top of these and still stay productive?

The easy answer is to hire a virtual IT department.

For a low monthly fee small businesses (and even homeowners) can enlist a managed service provider, or MSP, to monitor individual computers or networks of any size.

A managed service provider installs a small program, called a monitoring agent on one or more computers at your location.

The managed service provider can then manage which patches are installed and when.

This is usually handled behind the scenes and at a time that doesn’t interfere with the user’s productivity.

An added benefit to working with a managed service provider is that the monitoring agent reports other information, such as hardware and software errors, failed updates, potential malware threats and more. The managed service provider can then proactively deal with these types of issues.

Whether you work with a managed service provider, or decide to take on the challenge of managing your technology on your own, it is essential you take a proactive stance when it comes to your IT needs.

Failing to do so will cost you time, money, and frustration.

Port’s new vision for the waterfront S

ince the economic downturn put the Port of Everett’s waterfront condominium project on ice, the Port has been busy making plans for version 2.0 with adjustments made to fit today’s market realities.

Dubbed Waterfront Place, the new plan gives the waterfront back to the community.

Unlike the previous development that was designed like a private residential community with some retail and pocket parks, this plan creates a high-quality community asset focused on jobs, recreation, public gathering spaces and boating.

Another major difference is the Port will be the master developer and seek multiple partnerships to realize the development.

The project pulls the development to the center of the site, and opens up the shoreline for a walking and biking trail, vistas, two parks totaling approximately 3 acres, and many more public features.

The public gathering places are supported by a large, vibrant marina and will include an appealing mix of housing options supported by retail, office, restaurants and two hotels.

A new plaza links to a walking trail that rims the peninsula and connects to existing development, creating a legitimate destination.

The project will be delivered in four phases with the first phase starting in early 2016.

With fingerprints on Bremerton’s waterfront redevelopment and, most recently, Bothell Landing, she brings a can-do attitude and refreshing business acumen to the project.

She’s legitimately excited.

“I’ve been involved in some other remarkable and transformative waterfront developments,” she said. “This project is special, though.”

Public input is one reason, says Lisa Lefeber, the Port’s public affairs director.

together an ad hoc committee of community members to take a fresh look at what they saw and this development plan incorporates those new ideas, including much more public activity with a livable environment for residents.”

John Mohr, the Port’s long-time executive director, has announced his retirement at the end of this year and a selection committee is being formed to find his successor.

For Mohr, seeing this project get to this point and ready for development was unfinished business.

“Needless to say, I’m grateful for the hard work everyone has put into getting to this point,” Mohr said.

“Everett deserves a sense of place, a destination and something to be proud of on its waterfront. I think Waterfront Place does that. Getting to this point was a bit of unfinished business”

It’s a sizable enough area that the Port will ask the city of Everett to approve it as its own neighborhood.

That’s so the waterfront can be part of the neighborhood tapestry and should complement downtown and Everett’s residential neighborhoods but with a unique waterfront element that everyone can experience.

The previous project was approved by the Everett City Council.

With the change in character and block configuration, the Port will, again, be seeking council approval for this project.

Know what should be done, cut T

he Pareto Principle, better known as the 80/20 Rule, stems from the Italian economist, Vilfredo Pareto back in 1906.

The idea behind his principle is that for many events and actions, roughly 80 percent of the results come from 20 percent of the efforts.

What does that look like in the business world?

■ 20 percent of your activities will account for 80 percent of your results.

■ 20 percent of your clients will account for 80 percent of your sales.

■ 20 percent of your tasks will account for 80 percent of the value of what you do.

Embrace the 20/80 Rule and plan to use it to your benefit to manage your time wisely.

Each of us have many demands on our time, often making it difficult to enjoy a work/life balance.

I believe that we can use the Pareto Principle to help us decide where we should focus our time, energy and effort so we can maximize our results and minimize wasted time.

Begin by asking yourself the following questions: 1. Which 20 percent of sources are causing 80 percent of my problems and

unhappiness?

2. Which 20 percent of sources are resulting in 80 percent of my desired outcomes and happiness?

Let’s begin with question No. 1.

It’s time to look for the sources of trouble and begin creating solutions. Look for: Problems that arise on a regular basis. If it keeps coming up, fix it.

Difficult customers or clients.

Determine if you can find a way to make customers happy or if it’s time to cut ties.

Not every customer or client is a good fit for our business.

Poor service from vendors. You have a right to spend your money where your business is valued and appreciated, period.

Now, let’s take a look at question No. 2. Where are your positive experiences and sources of happiness coming from?

Look for: Satisfied customers. Be sure to keep in touch and show your appreciation for your top customers. Chances are good that happy customers are singing your praises, engaging in repeat business and sending new clients your way. They are worth their weight in gold.

Work that you love. You will feel fulfilled if you can focus on the work that you are passionate about and that comes easily to you. Find ways to delegate the rest to someone else who enjoys the tasks that you don’t.

Productive teams. If you are working with amazing people that make work and life better, be sure to build on that. Give people positive feedback to encourage more of the same behavior.

Take time to analyze why things are working so well so you can keep the momentum going.

If we get 80 percent of our results from 20 percent of our efforts, there may be a lot of fluff activities that we can cut out of our days or leave for the end of the day.

BOTHELL — Workforce Snohomish president and CEO Sue Ambler was named as the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the University of Washington Bothell. Ambler was presented with the award at the school’s commencement ceremony in June.

According to the settlement, the company failed to properly report propane storage at five facilities in Washington including one in Monroe and has agreed to pay a $134,400 penalty to resolve those violations.

EVERETT — Starbucks has broken ground on a new shop on Everett Community College property at Broadway and 10th Street. The Seattle coffee chain is leasing the land from the college, but constructing the building. The 2,000-square-foot store with a drivethrough is expected to be open by the college’s fall quarter.

ARLINGTON — The Haggen Food & Pharmacy in Arlington and the TOP Food & Drug store in Edmonds will be shut down, the Bellingham-based Haggen announced. The closure of the stores came after the chain was unsuccessful in negotiating a lease renewal with the property owner, the company said in a statement. The stores have about 150 employees combined. The Arlington store is located at 20115 74th Ave. NE and the Edmonds location at 21900 Highway 99.

OLYMPIA — The individual health insurance market grew 30 percent in one year to more than 327,000 people in Washington state, according to new information reported by health insurers to the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
