Seven honored for stewardship Seven Good Steward awards will be presented to islanders and local organizations in recognition of exceptional environmental stewardship on Saturday, June 21 at the Orcas Island Solstice Celebration.

At 11 a.m., winners will be presented with a “Finee” award – a glazed ceramic salmon made by Crow Valley Pottery – at the cluster of booths hosted by Stewardship Network members. This years’ award winners are: Youth Stewardship: Zach Kostechko of Orcas Island.

A senior at Orcas High School, Zack contributed a total of 66 volunteer hours serving with the Orcas Youth Conservation Corps last summer. He also served as a cadet for the Orcas Volunteer Fire Department and helped plan and install a demonstration rain garden in front of Ray’s Pharmacy.

Individual Stewardship: Chuck O’Clair of San Juan Island. Chuck has been an invaluable animal care volunteer at Wolf Hollow for more than 12 years. He has also volunteered countless hours to various organizations, including conducting beached bird surveys for COASST, collecting data for Three Meadows Marsh and Christmas bird trumpeter swan counts for Audubon each winter.

donated their 24-acre shoreline and forest preserve to the San Juan Preservation Trust in 2013. This property had been in the family for six generations. The Culvers are currently working with neighbors to place a conservation easement on an adjoining 60 additional acres.

Special Award for Environmental Awareness: Friends of Moran of Orcas Island. This organization provides stewardship and outreach programs for visitors to Moran State Park. Michel Vekved has volunteered many hours over the years to build a volunteer team, launch the organization’s website and create the Summit Gift Shop and Learning Center.

Their missions enhance the islands for visitors and residents alike. Similarly, the Youth Conservation Corps also makes a positive contribution to the visitor experience. In years past, you could observe several crews throughout the islands in the summer months providing trail and recreation site maintenance, noxious weed eradication, litter collection and beach clean up.

These collective efforts – in coordination with BLM, County Parks, the National Park Ser vice, County Land Bank, San Juan Preservation Trust, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and the San Juan County Noxious Weed Board – assist with the stewardship of our amazing public lands. Visitors and residents enjoy the fruits of their labors all throughout the year. In turn, the youth participants gain invaluable work and educational experience. This exposure will serve them well as they prepare for further work opportunities and future leadership roles in government, business and the arts in our communities and beyond.

How do you know when you’re ‘old’?

What is aging? When is a person “old”?

When I was a kid, I yearned to be older. My mom promised, “You’ll understand when you grow up.” But when I did get older, I discovered there were things I didn’t want to understand.

My generation, the boomers, never intended to age. We wouldn’t do it! We swore we’d never trust anybody over 30, much less 50 or 60. Yet, here we are - all 78 million of us - cruising into middle and old age (the youngest is 50, the oldest 68).

For years I’ve seen the graying of my friends, the frailty and death of my parents, wrinkles on a face (mine!) that used to be seamless, even a trend in the comics to joke about growing old. The obituaries list people my age or younger who have died.

So again, what is aging, and when is a person old?

Having worked with many

people in their 80s and 90s, I know there is no set answer. One definition has to do with our health - a person can seem ancient at 55 because of poor health, while another, 25 years older, might be vital and lively.

But the definition I’m talking about has little to do with age or health.

Rather, it has to do with our perceptions of age.

And our perception of who is old or young changes throughout our lives - as we age.

Nature has devised a little-known phenomenon that allows each of us to believe we are young forever. Aging, after all, is relative, and our definition of “old” depends on whom we’re comparing ourselves to. Here’s how it works: We tend to perceive people as being an acceptable age - neither “too young” nor “too old” - if they are within 10 years either side of our current age. Anyone over that 10-year boundary is either a “child” or

See if this rings true for you. Let’s say you’re 40 years old. You meet your neighbors who are around 35. Unconsciously, you perceive them as being like you. You see a friend who’s 47. Same impression.

But along comes Sam who just turned 65, and your internal alarm sounds.

Old! Out-of-date! Yet to Sam, you’re a baby, an inexperienced youth. Sam, on the other hand, views people in their mid-50s to mid-70s as

his peers, while they seem ancient to you.

This phenomenon was illustrated some years ago when my friend Bill lamented the premature death of his friend. The way he talked, his buddy sounded young. Finally I asked how old Bill’s friend was when he died. His answer: 86. Much too young to die, according to 81-year-old Bill.

We keep this changing perception of age as long as we are alive. It guarantees that, while I may seem old to you, I’ll always be young to myself. It also explains one of my favorite adages: The older I get, the older “old” gets.

San Juan County’s emergency responders would like to remind everyone that personal fireworks are not allowed anywhere in our beautiful county. “Safe and Sane” fireworks sold on the mainland are intended to be used in the communities where they are purchased.

Many of the fireworks sold on reservations are not legal anywhere in the state other than on Native American lands.

There will be several fireworks shows presented by professional pyro-technicians throughout San Juan County. Fireworks shows are planned at Roche Harbor, Friday Harbor, Eastsound, Deer Harbor and – the biggest one of all – on Lopez Island.

Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to enjoy these spectacular shows.

Lopez School seeks interim principal

The Lopez Island School District has begun the search for an interim elementary principal/special

services director to fill the vacancy left by the recent resignation of former principal Lisa Shelby, who announced several weeks ago her intent to return to Alaska. She has been principal at Lopez School for three years. She will begin a new administrative position in Alaska in August.

from Whidbey Island interested in Lopez school’s LIFE Garden and Farm Program.

Little did she know that this visit would result in yet another school garden program. Cary Peterson, chief gardener of Good Cheer Gardens on Whidbey Island, had learned about the program through a Thriving Communities Conference where she heard Rhea speak. Inspired by the program, Cary persuaded Dorit Zingarelli from the Whidbey Island Nourishes backpack program, Bruce Kinney and Dana Daniel, food service directors of the South Whidbey Schools and Monroe School District respectively, and three of

her apprentices to join her in visiting Lopez School.

The visitors met with Bill Evans, Superintendent, gardeners Suzanne Berry and Valerie Yukluk, and cooks Dana Cotton and Sam Taylor. The visitors returned to South Whidbey Schools and worked toward permitting produce grown on the school grounds to be served in their cafeterias. The challenge was that Chartwells, a food service management company, was on contract for all their cafeteria food.

The agreement is a first for any school in the nation to provide school-grown produce direct to the cafeteria under the protocol of Chartwells, according to the South Whidbey Record. (5/23/14) In just one week, Langley Middle School was able to see increases in salad consumption by the students.

Langley middle School was followed by the elementary school and the high School.

Under the coordination of Cary Peterson, enough greens are growing in the school gardens to supply the entire South Whidbey School District.

More and more schools are starting to include growing gardens as part of their curriculum.

According to Cornell University’s website, third, fourth, and fifth grade students that participated in school gardening activities scored significantly higher on science achievement tests compared to students that did not experience any garden-based learning activities. (See Klemmer, C.D., Waliczek, T.M. & Zajicek, J.M. (2005). In yet another study, students in a one-year school gardening program increased their overall life skills by 1.5 points. The gardening program positively influenced two constructs: “working with groups” and “self-understanding.”

hen domestic violence is in the news, it’s usually after the worst has happened: a violent assault, an injured child, a murder. So it’s no surprise that when we think about domestic violence interventions we think about police, courts, and hospitals. But what about the role each of us can play? Many of us have either experienced abuse in our own relationships or know someone who has. And often we don’t know what to do about it.

Fortunately, in this community, and in every community across Washington State, there is a local domestic violence program: a place where anyone can call—privately and at no cost—to talk with someone about concerns, options, and safety. You don’t have to be the person experiencing abuse to call. Advocates are there to talk with friends and family, neighbors and c ow o r k e r s — a ny o n e — about how to be supportive if someone turns to you for help.

But what if we didn’t have to wait until things were awful to intervene? What if we could stop this violence before it started? Domestic violence is preventable and talking with people of all ages about relationships is a key part of prevention.

No one is too young or too old to think about what a healthy relationship looks and feels like. It’s never too early, and it’s never too late, to talk about how we deserve to be treated.

Conversations build expectations, and talking with our loved ones lets us in on what they’re going through.

Although the program has already been highlighted nationally in the book Smart by Nature, it is gratifying to see that a simple seed planted in Lopez’s very first gardens is now spreading throughout the region. a portion of these funds go to support this endeavor by contacting Bob Jarman, Jamie Stephens or Rick Hughes at council@co.sanjuan.wa.us.
