For most high school athletes their seasons end when the regular season does but for Bonney Lake’s Michael Gretler that isn’t how his senior year played out. Michael along with the Panthers baseball team fought its way to the 3A state championship game extending its season by nine games. The Panthers lost its final game 12-0 to O’Dea for the state title. Despite the outcome of the game, Michael said to play in the championship game as a senior was an “unbelievable experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.” Ever since entering high school, Michael and his teammates had the goal of reaching that final game and every year, he said they would get “closer and closer but this year we were able to put everything together.” Even though the end of the season was

Threatening calls spur lockdown Hawks join Kahne By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer

Students at a pair of White River schools spent their final days in somewhat eerie surroundings, with classroom doors locked and Buckley police keeping a watchful eye on their buildings. The drama began the morning of June 11 when staff at the White River School District’s administration building received threatening phone calls. Out of concern for student safety, two nearby schools – Glacier Middle School and Elk

Ridge Elementary – went into “semi-lockdown” status. That meant students continued on their normal schedule, but classroom doors were locked, as were exterior doors. Students were not allowed outdoors and police remained at both schools and the administration building, while some parents responded to retrieve their kids. gretler FROM 1 upsetting, Michael added “looking back, it was an amazing season.” The Panthers ended the season 18-11 compared to its state championship opponent’s 25-2 overall record. “I don’t think many people outside our locker room thought that we could make it to the state championship and that is why we have nothing to hang our heads about,” Michael said. And for Michael it didn’t stop there, he played his final games of his high school career over the weekend in the All-State Baseball Series. Bonney Lake’s coach Michael Olson has coached Michael for the past six years starting when he was in seventh grade all the way through the All-State series where Olson along with other Panther coaching staff finished the year together. “He has been a team captain for three years and represents his program and his

school like no other,” Olson said. Playing in your final games of your high school career is different for everyone. Michael said for him it was exciting because he knew his final games would be played in the state tournament but once it was over “it was pretty sad.” Once back in the locker room after the final game it hit him, he said, that he would not be able to play with the same teammates and best friends that he had for the past four years. But even so, his baseball career isn’t over. In fact, it’s beginning again. Michael was honored in November at a lunch time assembly for signing his letter of intent to attend and play baseball at Oregon State University this coming fall. At the time of the assembly, he had just recently returned from Boston where he was invited to a workout with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. “The workout in Boston

was one of the coolest baseball experiences of my life,” he said. Michael added he had

“Standing on that field where the Red Sox had celebrated just days ago was insane,” Michael said.

Michael was even able to see and hold the 2004, 2007 and 2013 World Series trophies. And seven months later it appears that workout paid off, in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball draft on June 7 Michael was drafted by the Boston Red Sox. He is one of seven players drafted from Washington state and he is the first player from Bonney Lake High School to be drafted. Michael said being drafted by Boston was “one of the greatest moments of my life.” He added it is surreal because most players dream of getting their names called in the draft. In fact, he said the Red Sox have always been his favorite team describing that his room is decorated with Red Sox items and a mural of Fenway Park on one wall. When you think of being drafted, you picture the player sitting in a room filled with family and friends waiting for the call. That isn’t how it happened

for Michael. The day of the draft, Michael was playing a double header with his summer league team in Vancouver. He said after the first game he checked his phone and that’s when he figured it must have happened because his phone “was blown up with text messages.” Still he didn’t know what team or what round he was drafted in until he read a text from his mom, Nancy Gretler. He had no idea that he would be drafted by any team because he said he had told a number of scouts that unless he was offered “first round money” he would go to Oregon State and play there. Aside from the Red Sox, Michael said throughout the year he had heard from 20-25 teams. “With all the hard work that I have put in over the years it is very satisfying to see it paying off and that

Olson said the sixth tool is character and mental makeup and Michael “carries himself on and off the field with confidence, pride and sportsmanship.”

started for the 2A. He gave up two unearned runs and pitched four innings. Christensen started in the second game, he also pitched four innings and allowed two earned runs. Participating on the 3A team, Michael Gretler, Taiki Green, Nolan

Weber, Dylan Moran, Kash Koltermann and Cory Burrill represented Bonney Lake. Burrill pitched two shutout innings in the second game. And Weber, Gretler, Moran and Green all contributed hits for the 3A in the final game.

Michael said entering into his senior season, he knew there was a 90 percent chance that he would still go to Oregon even if he was drafted by a major league team. He said going to Oregon, “there are many things that I want to improve on as a player.” Michael added playing for Oregon State will help him have the best chance at succeeding in the majors. The Oregon State Beavers won the Pac 12 for the second year in a row and Michael said he is “beyond excited for the opportunity to play for the coaches down there and do everything I can to help the team win games next year.” His parents Nancy and Jim Gretler agree that Michael’s decision to attend Oregon

State first is the wise choice. At the moment he isn’t concerned with what he can bring to a team in the majors. “I know I am far away from being in a position to help a

right.” When Michael travels to Oregon in the fall, he said he will spend the first two years working with the exploratory studies program. He said the baseball team’s academic counselor advised that he do this because it will help him be able to change majors, if he needs to, and will help him stay eligible to play on the team. If things go according to plan, he said, “I would love to do something with pharmacy and I am also interested in business.” Apart from baseball, as Michael gets older he said he wants to be able to help support his family and help coach and mentor young players. Michael credits his coaches, parents, friends, teachers,

weight lifting partners and anyone else who has helped him over his baseball career with how he has gotten where he is today. “Without their support and knowledge I would never have been able to achieve everything I have and I want to do the same for young kids one day,” Michael said. Being the first player drafted from Bonney Lake is not only special for Michael but for the school and the baseball program as well. Olson said it brings a “tremendous amount of pride to the program and legitimizes the dream of playing professional baseball” for those still playing for the Panthers. “We are so happy for him, he has absolutely earned this wonderful opportunity,” Olson said.

The high school baseball season came to an end over the weekend with three players, two from Bonney Lake and one from Sumner, playing in the All-State Baseball Series in Yakima. Sumner’s star pitcher Christian Parsons pitched during the first game of the series Saturday. He pitched three innings and struck out two. Parsons gave up zero walks and allowed no runs to score. When he entered the game for Team Adams in the third inning they had a 3-2 lead. And when Parsons

Of f icers responded to a state Route 410 fast food restaurant for the report of a customer who assaulted an employee with food. The suspect fled before police arrival but was identified through investigations and booked into Pierce County Jail for malicious mischief, assault, disorderly conduct and an unrelated warrant.

Police responded to the report of a woman that was attacked by her roommate. The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and the suspect was booked into Pierce County jail.

June 5 Suspicious Vehicle: A

resident of 195th Avenue East reported a suspicious vehicle pulled into his driveway and two male subjects looked inside the home, presumably to case it out. The report was taken for informational purposes and the reporting party was advised to contact the department of the vehicle is seen again.

Theft from Porch: An

officer responded to the report of a theft from the porch of a residence located on 193 Avenue East. There was no suspect information available.

Aggravated Assault:

Officers responded to Cascade Drive for a domestic violence report. The victim received medical attention from East Pierce Fire and Rescue and

the suspect was arrested for assault and booked into Pierce County jail.

June 6 Theft from Yard: An officer responded to the report of stolen boat motors and fishing equipment from a boat that was parked in front of the victim’s garage. No suspect information was available. June 7 Warrant: At about 11:15 p.m., a vehicle was pulled over for driving with a

defective brake light. A records check of the came back with several arrest warrants and a suspended license. He was transported to Puyallup jail and the vehicle’s passenger was released at the scene.

responded to West Hill Drive East, for the report of a stolen license plate. The owner was unsure of when the plate was taken and no suspect information was available.

Traumatizing family vacations The middle of June is a happy time for students and teachers when schools release the future leaders of our country back to their parents. Parents must accept at some point that although your child has purple hair, wears hand-me-down clothes from a Martian and listens to music that sounds like barfing, they will eventually win. What causes the demise of curiosity? Why do most children seem to lose their sense of curiosity as they age? Something seems to happen to children and I’ve always wondered why. Yet, there are some adults who are still as curious as they were when they were children. Why is that? I don’t have any data to answer my question, but I did go to the TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) website, because I have found their video presentations (usually under 18 minutes) to be thoughtful and provocative. It’s where I found the video of Angela Duckworth’s “Grit” speech, to name one. They had a conversation about this question of the loss of childhood curiosity. I’d like to share a few of the better comments to provoke some thought and discussion. Teresa Willingham of Odessa, Fla., made this observation: “We are all born curious. It’s curiosity that compels children of all ages to touch, taste, smell and explore the world around them. Sometimes out of necessity, sometimes out of habit, sometimes for no good reason at all, we often discourage that innate curiosity in children, just as they begin to master the skills they need to get

a handle on their world. “Anyone who has seen the affected boredom of middle schoolers and high schoolers in contrast with the boundless energy and enthusiasm of elementary-aged children can see the effects of thwarted curiosity, of a culture in which it simply isn’t cool to be curious.” Sir Ken Robinson, in a TED video called “Why Schools Kill Creativity,” laid the blame on a public education system that only emphasizes academic education when in reality, “Intelligence is diverse, dynamic and distinct.” In other words, not everyone fits the academic mold. He blamed schools for emphasizing getting an education with the focus of becoming a college professor. If

a student doesn’t fit that mold, then the system often doesn’t work for that student. Robinson also made an observation: “If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never be creative.” That comment seems true. If a person’s ego is so tied up with being right, then, for someone to come along and challenge that perspective will destroy the person’s ego. To be curious requires that we make mistakes and then face the problem. The ability to admit error requires that someone have a deep sense of inner security, enough to be humble in the face of fact. Pride, after all, has been one of the seven deadly sins for hundreds if not thousands of years. Pride can keep us from being curious about things. Another TED contributor, Debra Smith, commented: “The more kids’ questions go unanswered the less courage they have to ask another question. The behaviour of curiosity can go through a process of extinguishing by neglect and ignoring the behavior – to the great loss of society and the child herself.” Debra’s state-

I was at a conference recently and a woman I was talking to told me how her father and mother made her go to every boring museum from here to Bango Bango in their Aristocrat trailer. She emphatically said she would never do that. When I asked her where she planned to take her kids on summer vacation she said a new modern art exhibit in Wyoming. Heeheehee ... Another battle on the frontline of the vacation wars. When my daughter was about 9 or 10 years old, I took her to St. Ignatius, Mont. and the National Bison Range. Katy had the lucky chance to get up before sunrise and endure a slow trek through the bison range. The buffalo were so far away they looked like brown specks on the windows. Later that day, we decided to rush back from Helena and go through the range a second time, just making it at 6 p.m. before the gates closed. When we came over the top ridge we were suddenly surrounded by the entire bison herd. They began using our car as a scratching post blotting out all light inside. She yelled at me for stranding her in the middle of knowwheresville surrounded by “marauding, stupid buffalo” ready to trample our car and use it as a bridge to romper room. It wasn’t until she was an adult that Katy realized I made her live through bison trauma, instead of going to Disneyland to see a three-fingered mouse. She claims I have scarred her for life by not taking

The 2014 Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Award was recently presented to Bonney Lake High School Principal Linda Masteller. Since Masteller became principal, Bonney Lake has received multiple awards in recognition of growth and leadership within the institution. Relay for Life Rummage Sale and BBQ at Senior Center

he Bonney Lake Kiwanis Club, in conjunction with the Bonney Lake Senior Center, is holding a rummage sale to raise funds for Relay for Life. The sale will be held in the senior center parking lot on Saturday, June 21st from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Donations are being accepted during senior center business hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are looking for good useable items; no clothes or shoes please. During the rummage sale the Kiwanis Club will also be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs. Included with your lunch item will be chips and a cold drink. Come by on the 21st for some fun shopping and a bite to eat. It is for a good cause. 

Lake Tapps Pioneer Cemetery Ceremony

n 1889, Daniel Orcutt lived on the Bonney Lake Plateau near what is currently Lake Tapps. His family and their neighbors had no local cemetery at the time, so he donated one acre of his land to Pierce County to be used as “a public burying ground only ... forever”. The site was named the Lake Tapps Cemetery. While it is suspected that as many as 70 persons may be buried in the cemetery, there are only 14 known interments (remaining name markers), mostly the Lappenbusch and Fadola families. Over time, the cemetery was neglected, then forgotten. It became overgrown with brush and blackberries, and the stone markers became invisible.

On June 4, 2014, the Bonney Lake Historical Society held a renaming ceremony. Roger Hunter attended and told some of the history he has discovered while researching his ancestors. 

In 2008, a hiker traipsing through the brush discovered some of the headstones and posted the coordinates on the internet website Waymarking.com. He erroneously named it the Dieringer Cemetery. A few years later a Boy Scout troop adopted the site as one of their community projects and cleaned it up and erected a sign naming it the “Dieringer Pioneer Cemetery”. In 2012, Roger Hunt, the great-greatgreat grandson of Daniel Orcutt began the mission of restoring the name of the cemetery as the Lake Tapps

84th Street Water Project Update

n May 19th contractors began installing 1,900 linear feet of ductile iron water main on 84th Street E (from 182nd to Locust). Other miscellaneous items included installing 10 new service connections; installing 550 linear feet of corrugated polyethylene storm sewer pipe; installing 5 new storm structures. The city also backfilled and compacted an existing

stormwater pond, and overlayed 800 tons of asphalt on 84th Street East from 182nd Avenue East to Locust Avenue East. When completed, the improvement will enhance water pressure and fire protection in the area, as well as improve storm water drainage. 
