13 value wines for sunny days

BY ERIC DEGERMAN AND ANDY PERDUE As we get into early June we begin to see more warmth and sunshine, which means more time for wine — indoors and out — with friends and family.

White wines tend to be quite versatile food wines, pairing well with fresh seafood, shellfish, chicken and pork dishes. Dry whites such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and some Rieslings work perfectly with pasta dishes, especially in white sauces or tossed with grilled vegetables. Off-dry white wines can be superb with Asian dishes such as Vietnamese soups, Indian or Thai curries or spicier Chinese cuisine.

Finding value white wines that retail for $15 or less isn't too hard. Finding reds in the Pacific Northwest that retail for $15 and under has become a little bit more difficult in recent years, but it can still be done.

Here's a look at xx value whites and xxx value reds from the Northwest that we've tasted in the past couple of months. Ask for them at your favorite wine merchant or contact the wineries directly.

Kyra Wines 2012 Chardonnay, Columbia Valley, $15: This Chardonnay offers aromas and flavors of dusty apple, pineapple, pear and lime.

Kiona Vineyards Winery 2011 Lemberger, Red Mountain, $15: Fascinating aromas include Bing cherry, dark plums, lilac and horehound. Inside are enjoyable flavors of dark cherry and cranberry with ample acidity and a pinch of black pepper.

Garofalo Family Winery 2011 Les Collines Vineyard Semillon, Walla Walla Valley, $14: This Semillon’s flavors dance between cantaloupe and honeydew, lime and apple amid a structure that’s tart yet rounded.

Naches Heights Vineyard and Winery 2012 Pinot Gris, Naches Heights, $13: The nose of this Pinot Gris brings aromas of Gala apple, pear, pineapple, lime and white pepper. Inside, it’s startlingly dry.

Silver Lake Winery 2012 Roza Riesling, Rattlesnake Hills, $9: This luscious Riesling opens with fruit salad aromas of fresh apple and Asian pear with clove and honeysuckle.

Purple Star Wines 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, Columbia Valley, $11: Here is a brisk white with tones of Asian pear, sweet herbs, lemongrass, fresh lime juice, white pepper and minerality. Enjoy with Tex-Mex. Alexandria Nicole Cellars A Squared 2013 Pinot Gris, Horse Heaven Hills, $14: Abeautiful example of Washington Pinot Gris with floral aromas, backed by peaches, pear, lime zest, tutti fruitti, clove and rosewater.

Arbor Crest Wine Cellars 2013 Bacchus Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Columbia Valley, $10: This gorgeous white opens with aromas of lemon curd, timothy hay, honey and candy corn.

Ginkgo Forest Winery 2010 Ginkgo Red, Wahluke Slope, $15: The nose hints at crushed red currant, pie cherry, Marionberry and cherry SweeTart, joined by notes of barrel spice and cedar. Pairs with blue cheese.

Farm Boy Wines 2011 Bunk House Red, Columbia Valley, $15: A nose of plum, Marionberry and blueberry with hints of cinnamon bark and dark cherry.

Sharecropper's Wine Co. 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $15: Aromas of Bing cherry, fresh strawberry and plum pick up hints of milk chocolate and earthiness.

Columbia Winery NV Composition, Columbia Valley, $14: There's a greeting from aromas of strawberry candy, plum, violets, lilac, cocoa powder and vanilla.

On the attack, it's a bold presentation of strawberry and cherry with good richness on the entry.

Rove McManus

Australia’s hardest working TV host is trying to start a Riot in the States

$500 per week.

That was the budget for “The Loft Live,” Australian entertainer Rove McManus’ first television show, which debuted on Melbourne’s Channel 31 in 1997. The budget from RMIT University was a pittance to be sure, but hardly unusual in the world of community access.

McManus was able to stretch his dollars and the late night variety show, which consisted of guest interviews and taped skits, became a small hit that ran for eight seasons.

McManus leveraged his success to break into mainstream television. He was a roving reporter on Foxtel’s “In Fashion,” hosted by Hugh Jackman but, in 1999, Network Nine decided to translate the formula of “The Loft Live” into a prime time series.

“Rove” was cancelled after 10 episodes, but effectively returned as “Rove Live” the following year, on another network. It would last until 2009, again becoming “Rove” in 2007, following a brief hiatus after his wife’s death.

The aftermath of “Rove’s” last season saw McManus go stateside, relocating to Los Angeles. Previous appearances on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” turned into regular appearances, including his 2011 “Rove Across America” sketch.

That name, by the way, was given to John Henry Michael McManus by his sister. Why, he doesn’t know.

In an appearance on Andrew Denton’s talk show “Enough Rope,” he explained: “I’ve never told the story because it’s actually so boring … There’s really no story

behind it. I think — my theory is because I wasn’t there to hear how it all happened — is that it started off as something else and just evolved into Rove at the end of it, so they just went, ‘Right, we’ll stop adding to it.’ Although, even now … people still say ‘Rovey’ or ‘Rovey Povey.’”

McManus’s latest endeavor is “Riot,” an improv competition show held on a sloped floor — the better for pratfalls — and executive produced by Steve Carell.

Over the course of his television career, McManus has continued to perform as a stand-up, reveling in pointing out the absurdities of societal structure.

McManus will perform at the Parlor Live comedy club July 17-19.
