he best of the Valley, from live entertainment, fresh food and produce to unique gifts can be found Tuesday and Thursday evenings at both ends of the Valley.

The North Bend Farmers Market is a summer time tradition now in its ninth year at Si View Park, 400 S.E. Orchard Drive.

The 2014 season brings many reasons to celebrate, from the grand-reopening of this renovated park and enhanced market area, to welcoming new vendors to the mix and a full season of live concerts. Learn more at www.siviewpark.org/farmers-market.phtml.

The weekly market is open on Thursday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m., June 12 through Sept. 11.

Market vendors offer an abundant selection of fresh produce, berries, meats, honey, flowers, and botanicals; bottled wine, baked goods, dried pasta, seasoning oils and vinegars; prepared foods including wood-fired pizza, tamales, Asian specialties, barbecue, all-natural hot dogs, cupcakes and shaved ice; as well as a variety of hand-crafted items from jewelry to baby items to yard décor.

Housed under a majestic timber-frame structure designed, milled and hand-crafted by local artisans, the Carnation Farmers Market is unique among markets to have such an impressive and permanent home.

Just what’s all the buzz about local food? For most folks, fresh, locally grown food simply tastes better than food picked and shipped thousands of miles.

But it’s really about much more than that. Local farms help preserve open space, build local economies, and nurture the genetic diversity of foods.

Northwest Railway Museum offers scenic excursions and family memories

A

ll aboard! Visit the Northwest Railway Museum for a unique living history experience that has been a part of western Washington’s traditions since 1957.

Visitors to the Northwest Railway Museum can catch a train to another time, experiencing how railroads influenced settlement and everyday life in Washington state. They explore train cars, exhibits, and a Victorian-era depot while following in the footsteps of more than one million travelers who have passed through the doors since 1890. They also experience travel before the age of Interstate highways while seeing, riding and feeling the excitement of a working railroad, with all of its bells and whistles. Regular trains operate weekends beginning in April and run through October 19.

For visitors that want more, join the museum on Saturdays from May through October for a docent-led tour of the new Train Shed exhibit building, this year featuring the 1898-built railway chapel car 5 “Messenger of Peace,” a caboose built at a sawmill during the height of World War II, and a massive locomotive used by Weyerhaeuser Timber to log the forests near Mount Rainier.

Returning to the present, visitors have a multitude of opportunities for fun at the museum’s special events: Day Out With Thomas™, Mother’s, Father’s and Grandparent’s Day weekends, Snoqualmie Railroad Days Festival, Halloween Train and Santa Train.

The museum has been developing facilities for more than 10 years and this year is beginning construction of a library and archive facility adjacent to the exhibit building. This continuing phase in the development of the Railway History Center will also feature expansive public restrooms and a classroom. The new project will support space to preserve and acnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnncess historical documents, books and photographs, and will provide a reading room for public access to this collection of non-circulating materials.

Misty giant Glaciers and industry carved a dramatic cataract at popular 278-foot Snoqualmie Falls Every year, more than one million people flock to Snoqualmie Falls. Just a short walk from a busy highway, visitors can take in the dramatic vista of cliff walls and falling water, hear the mighty 278foot cataract and feel the spray of its mists.

Go to the Falls: Snoqualmie Falls is accessible from two public parking lots just off State Route 202 about a half-mile northwest of downtown Snoqualmie.

Travelers on Interstate 90 can access Highway 202 from Exit 25, by traveling on Snoqualmie Parkway north over Snoqualmie Ridge, or take the historic loop through downtown Snoqualmie via Exit 27, eastbound.

Secrets of the Falls Snoqualmie Falls holds secrets beneath its waters. A century ago, workers bored tunnels beneath the bedrock and built one of the nation’s first hydroelectric power plants.

Last year, Puget Sound Energy completed a huge retrofit of the power plant and surrounding grounds. There’s now more to see and do, from historic exhibits to a boardwalk and expanded viewpoints.

Other secrets are in the sky. Snoqualmie Falls is home to a family of peregrine falcons. These fast birds prey on the many other creatures who live or visit the falls. Try to spot them on their perches.

When humans first came to the Snoqualmie Valley some 5,000 years ago, they encountered the awe-inspiring 278-foot cataract. The falls was sculpted by the huge glaciers that covered Puget Sound eons ago. The river had been moved from its ancient bed by ice and gravel, and when the ice melted, it could not seek its natural level because of bedrock encountered at the lip of what we now call Snoqualmie Falls.

For the Snoqualmie Tribe, who have lived for centuries in the Snoqualmie Valley, the waterfall is central to their beliefs and culture.

They believe it to be the place where the first man and woman were created by Moon the Transformer. The mists rising from the base of the waterfall are said to connect heaven and earth.

What to do?

There’s more to do at the Falls than just standing around. Hike a trail, spot all kinds of wildlife, from chipmunks to falcons. Picnic on the newly renovated visitor’s center grounds. Visit the landmark Salish Lodge and make dinner or spa reservations. Hike down to the lower viewpoint from the new hiking trail and boardwalk.

Si View Pool The public swimming pool in the Snoqualmie Valley is located at Si View Community Center, in the heart of North Bend at 400 Orchard Drive, minutes off I-90’s exit 31.

Renovated in 2007 inside the historic community center building, Si View Pool offers lessons and classes for children and adults, Aqua Zumba and other fitness options, lifeguard classes, pool parties and a public swim.

Go back in time at Valley’s history museum Home of the Snoqualmie people for thousands of years, the Snoqualmie Valley has a vibrant history that is shared at the Snoqualmie Valley Historical Museum. Located in a strategic trade and transportation corridor, the Snoqualmie Valley has always been an important location for the Pacific Northwest regional economy, with the Snoqualmie Pass providing access for the majority of east-west trade. This trade route has greatly shaped the history of the area from the first people to settle in the Valley to the first pioneers and current travelers and residents.

The artifacts of the Valley’s rugged past can be viewed at the museum, which is operated by the Snoqualmie Valley Historical Society. The museum is located at 320 Bendigo Blvd. S. in North Bend in the Gardiner Weeks Memorial Park and is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday, April through October and Monday through Tuesday, November through March.

The Snoqualmie Valley Historical Museum has a rich collection of photographs, stories, and pioneer artifacts. Visitors can view items from a turn-of-the century kitchen, see tools and toys used by people living in that era, and check out what the Valley was like in the year 1940. An additional exhibit also looks at artifacts and history of the Snoqualmie Tribe. The Museum Farm Shed provides a window display of the history of agriculture in the area.

The oldest operating museum in King County, the museum grew out of the 1939 commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Washington statehood. North Bend grade school teacher Ada Snyder Hill gathered a collection of pioneer artifacts, setting up a display at school. Hill’s display was so popular with local residents that it became permanent.

The museum has been run for the last 75 years by volunteers and funded through donations. Membership is $25.

Valley hotels, parks, campgrounds welcome pets

On your next vacation, don’t leave home without the family dog. You’ll have a great time, save on sitter costs, and when you return home, your shoes, furniture and carpet will be unscathed.

When your next vacation is in the Valley, you’ll also be pleasantly surprised at your dog-friendly lodging options. Stay at a convenient hotel in North Bend, indulge in a lavish room with a view on Snoqualmie Falls, or experience something new at ToltMacDonald Park in Carnation.

“We have two yurts that are pet-friendly, Yurts 4 and 6, and right now they’re $50 a night,” said Pam Schellhase of King County Parks. “Some people like to bring their pets, so they decided to pick two to be pet-friendly.”

Of course, you can camp with your dog in a tent, but if you’d rather not sleep on the ground, the yurts offer a nice compromise, as long as you’re planning to stay for two or more nights. The wood and fabric “overgrown tents,” as Schellhase describes them, are outfitted with futons, bunk beds, and other furniture to sleep up to seven people, but you bring your own bedding. Each yurt has a table and chairs, electricity, heat,

and a firepit outside—there’s no cooking allowed inside the yurts.

One large dog, or two small dogs are allowed in each yurt, and dog owners are expected to clean up after their animals, keep them on leashes no longer than eight feet, and keep them relatively quiet.

“If they do bark excessively, we do have the right to ask (the owners) to take them home,” Schellhase said.

Canine lodging Barking dogs have never been much of a problem at the Salish Lodge, where dogs have been allowed for years. Currently, guests who bring dogs must pay a $50 deposit for up to two dogs, and sign a waiver to keep them in their rooms. Visiting dogs get their own water bowls and treats, and, if they’re good, maybe something special from the Salish’s puppy menu. With the special “It’s a Dog’s World” package, they also take home a keepsake blanket.

Guests are asked to use common sense and be respectful of other guests, as always.

The Edgewick Inn in east North Bend allows dogs in the rooms, and charges a non-refundable $20 deposit for each dog.

There is no size restriction.

Wherever you go, and however you decide to spend the night, remember to pack and plan for your four-legged family members,

too. Some animals don’t tolerate long car rides, so it might be helpful to take them on short rides in the weeks before your trip.

Talk to your veterinarian about your plans, and be sure all vaccinations are current. Also, ask about precautions for fleas, ticks and heartworms, and any other wildlife your pet might encounter. Pack a doggie first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic cream, an antidiarrheal medication recommended by your vet, gauze squares, and the phone numbers of your veterinarian, a poison control hotline, and a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital.

While driving, plan to stop every two hours for an exercise break. Maintain your regular feeding routing, but feed the main meal at the end of the day. Finally, look over your pet every day you’re away. Pay attention to changes in appetite, energy, and elimination, excessive scratching or unusual discharge from the eyes or nose.

arnation is a rural community working to regrow its agricultural roots. The town was once known as Tolt, after the Snoqualmie word “Tolthue,” or river of swift waters, in use for thousands of years. In 1917, the town was renamed for the world-famous Carnation Dairy, which located here in 1910. The Valley became world-famous as the “Home for Contented Cows.”

While the farm has moved on, Carnation is expanding its rural role as a center for local, artisan farmers and a thriving farmer’s market.

History lessons See, hear and taste medieval ways at Carnation’s Camlann Village

Step into 1376 England this summer at Camlann Medieval Village, a living-history museum project. Tucked away between Carnation and Duvall, the village is open every weekend, May through September. The village encourages field trips with a class, demonstration, and optional lunch, but classes are open to the public as well.

A regular village weekend hosts a plethora of demonstrations and events for a oneday visit, including medieval blacksmithing, textile production, animal care, spinning, clothing design, entertainers, and craft shops such as the Cidre Mille, which demonstrates apple crushing and pressing, or the Clothier Shoppe, which rents medieval clothing to wear during the Camlann visit.

The local restaurant, Le Bors Hede Inne, is open year-round, Tuesday through Sunday by reservation. They serve food such as Fenberry Pye, Sanc Dragon, and Blamanger, a vegetarian meal of rice, chick peas, sugar, and spices, while minstrels sing and are accompanied on the lute. Five festivals are scheduled each year. These festivals include everything from knightly combat and archery to puppetry and minstrels. Michaelmasse, on September 28, celebrates the end of harvest and the feast includes roast goose, a food eaten for good luck, as well as a selection of other seasonal dishes.

Although there are feasts in the summer, the villagers emphasize the educational value of a visit to Camlann. The village is run by a non-profit educational group, committed to “enrich the quality of our lives today, through a re-discovery of those traditional arts and values” and, among other goals, to make scholarly study available and relevant to the general public.

Back at the ranch Family blast goes way beyond berries at Carnation’s Remlinger Farms

Snoqualmie Valley is home to many popular farms; Harvold Berry Farm with their U-pick fields, Carnation Tree Farm’s U-cut Christmas trees, Oxbow Organic Farm with their education center, and, of course, the well-known Remlinger Farms with their U-pick fields and Fun Park.

Beginning as a U-pick strawberry operation, Remlinger Farms now has grown to include blueberries, raspberries, and pumpkins in their U-pick. Diane Hart, daughter of Gary and Bonnie Remlinger, and her husband, Will Hart, are very active in the management of the farm.

“We’ve added a new raspberry field, so we’ve doubled our production,” Hart said. The weather has been great for the berries, but always make sure to look on the website, Facebook, or call the store before heading out to the farm.

Remlinger’s website also has the seasons for the produce they sell in their market. Officially opened on Mother’s day weekend, the market stays open every day until Thanksgiving. Along with fresh produce, the market also houses their famous frozen U-bake pies, and local consignment gifts and crafts. “The market has been redesigned this year,” said Hart. With new displays and products, the goal, as always, is “food and gifts you can’t buy anywhere else.”

The fun park also opens for business Mother’s Day weekend. In order to continue increasing capacity, the park has undergone several changes. Along with their recently remodeled roller coaster, two new rides were added in October for the “preschool customer,” Hart said. The Crazy Corn Ride is a spinning corn ride, and the El Paso Train is a mini version of the scenic train. Both ‘tot’ rides are in the old nursery building. Hart and his family have been busy increasing the covered space, “so people can still come in the rain.” Open weekends until June 20, the park is open seven days a week until 4:30 p.m.

The park hosts one of Remlinger’s biggest festivals, the Fall Harvest Festival. Beginning at the end of September and open on weekends, kids can get lost in the Fall Corn Maze, ride a wagon to the U-pick pumpkin fields, or listen to Eric Ode perform in the farm theater.

With all the fun and excitement, your children will be begging to come back, so don’t forget that your day passes can be upgraded to summer or season passes.

Snoqualmie Ridge On the trail

The still-growing city of Snoqualmie grew on the Ridge with the idea of connectivity—of residents being able to walk, jog or bike to jobs, shopping, entertainment or neighbors. Thanks to that focus, Snoqualmie Ridge includes some 20 miles of hiking trails, connecting neighborhoods to all parts of the city as well as the King County SnoqualmiePreston Trail.

Snoqualmie Ridge also features 16 mini-parks, small neighborhood parks with benches, fountains, reading areas or decorative stones. The Ridge’s parks make good places to try a picnic or stroll. From views to plants, fountains or sculptures, you’ll get a different experience at each park.

A ten-minute stroll can go send you hundreds of years back in time at the Stillwater Bog nature preserve. Nestled inside trees at Community Park on Snoqualmie Ridge, out of sight of traffic, homes and businesses, the bog is a place where families can learn about natural history and wildlife.

Hit the trail

F

ew places offer as many great runs as the Snoqualmie Valley. With miles of trails and plenty of parks and nature preserves, there is something for everyone afoot.

Avid Snoqualmie runner and Run Snoqualmie race founder Sean Sundwall shares his top runs in the Valley.

Snoqualmie Valley Trail This fantastic trail runs from Carnation to Spokane. The surface is mostly dirt on the 9.2 miles from Carnation to Tokul Road, and is well shaded for those warm summer days. Once runners reach Tokul Road, they can go around the old mill site for about two miles using Mill Pond Road, and rejoin the trail from the old railroad trestle on Meadowbrook Way. After runners cross the trestle, the trail is packed gravel and is perfectly flat for the next five miles, all the way to Interstate 90.

Once it crosses under the interstate, there is a gentle slope up to Rattlesnake Lake, about five miles. From there, runners can join the John Wayne Trail, which crosses Snoqualmie Pass and goes all the way to Spokane.

“What I love about this stretch is the soft surface, which is easy on the body, and the gorgeous scenery, which is easy on the eyes,” Sundwall said. “It’s 20-plus miles of soft surface trails, the prize running territory of the Valley.”

The Snoqualmie Ridge community, above downtown, boasts nearly 20 miles of soft trails to run on, which provide a beautiful scenic backdrop for runners and access to lower Snoqualmie.

Unlike the other trails in the Valley, these trails are anything but flat. Just like the community which these trails run through, the Run Snoqualmie organizes several footraces Snoqualmie Ridge trail system is chock full for runners of all abilities, year-round. of rolling hills and even a few monster slopes for good measure.

Preston/Snoqualmie Trail This run is a bit of a hidden treasure, because it is not yet connected to the Snoqualmie Valley Trail.

There are four primary access points to this 5.5 mile, mostly-paved, mostly-flat trail, which starts at the new soccer fields in Preston and ends at a stunning viewpoint a half-mile from Snoqualmie Falls.

Access points include the Preston soccer fields, Lake Alice Road, and two trailheads that provide access via the Snoqualmie Ridge trail system at either Tanner Jeans Park or Bandera park.

More than a general store Walking into the 104-year-old Carmichael’s True Value Hardware Store is like taking a step back in time to when life was laid back and things were a lot simpler.

Taking over Carmichael’s in 2002 from Dick and Betty Carmichael, current owners Wendy Thomas and Bryan Woolsey remember stepping into the building for the first time in 1991. It was that moment that the place moved them.

“I don’t know what it is, but you walk into the building and it does something to you,” Thomas said.

The historic building has been a general merchandise store for a very long time. Originally built in 1902, the store was rebuilt in 1909 by the Reinig brothers after a fire from the neighboring Kinsey Hotel — where the Snoqualmie Valley Record is now located — jumped the street and burned the store down.

“It’s had several different incarnations,” Thomas said. “So it’s a really sturdy, enduring place.”

Thomas enjoys the role her store plays in the community, as well as its timeless feel.

“People walk in the door and what happens is that all of us are suddenly transported back to another time,” she said. “I don’t know if it’s the floors, the smell (or) the feeling that it’s not a new place, that people like about it.”

“We’re more of a curiosity shop,” Condit said.

“People just like to re-live their childhood.”
