Coupeville softball wins spot in state By Jim Waller Staff Reporter

The Coupeville High School softball team enacted a little revenge to complete its improbable journey to the state tournament. The Wolves defeated Blaine 7-4 Saturday, May 24, at Sedro-Woolley’s Janiki Playfields to grab the fifth and final seed out of the tri-district playoffs and to qualify for the state 1A tournament in Richland May 30 and 31. This will be only the second trip to state for a Coupeville softball team. The Wolves finished third in 2002, losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Adna. Coupeville (8-18) will open state against Warden (18-2) at 10 a.m. Friday in the 16team, double-elimination tournament. The Wolves play opposite Okanogan (21-3) and Hoquiam (17-5) in the bracket. The winner of Coupeville/Wraden meets the Okanogan/Hoquiam winner at 4 p.m. Friday. The losers face off at 2 p.m.The final step to state this spring was through Blaine, which had walloped the Wolves 20-4 just a week earlier in the district tournament. This time around, Coupeville built a 6-0 lead against the Borderittes and survived a late Blaine rally and some controversy to secure the state slot. Coupeville entered the postseason with a 4-15 record; not a mark usually associated with state-tournament types. The record, however, was misleading. Fourteen of the losses came to 2A schools, and when the Wolves faced same-sized 1A foes during the regular season, they posted a 3-1 record. Coupeville went 2-2 against the powerful Northwest Conference schools in the district tournament, finishing fourth and earning a spot in tri-district. They opened tri-district with a 12-6 drubbing of Eatonville in a loser-out game, then fell to Lynden Christian 8-0. That set up the showdown with Blaine for a state berth. Coupeville stunned the Borderittes with a five-run second inning. Two walks, singles by Tiffany Briscoe and Madi Roberts and a three-run double by Hailey Hammer highlighted the inning. Briscoe was hit by a pitch in the fourth and scored on a single by Hammer. Roberts singled and scored the Wolves’ final run on McKayla Bailey’s base hit in

Streets overflow with patriotism By Megan Hansen Editor

Patriotism was overflowing onto the streets of Coupeville Saturday as the community gathered for the annual Memorial Day Parade and celebration. Starting on South Main Street, decorated cars and floats filled the streets. People walked the parade route waving American Flags, tossing candy and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The parade, led by grand marshal Beth Kuchynka, flowed down Main Street onto Front and Alexander streets before ending on Coveland at Coupeville Town Park. An estimated two thousand people filled the streets to watch. Flags were handed out along Front Street. Navy Band Northwest performed along the parade route and played at the entrance to the park as the rest of the community flowed in for further celebration. “I think it went really well,” said Lynda Eccles, executive director of the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce. “There were a lot of people.” “Having the Navy Band Northwest really added to the traditional parade feel. With the backdrop of Coupeville it had that traditional Americana feeling. “It had a festive, happy feeling. It’s just

amazing.” While the parade offered entertainment and fun for the community, the remembrance ceremony held a more serious and subdued tone. Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard acted as emcee for the event, highlighting the town’s participation in the community event and the importance of the day. This year’s Memorial Day celebration was particularly special to her, she said, because she recently returned from a trip to France with her husband. She said they were able to walk the beaches of Normandy and visit key locations in history. Capt. Darryl L. Walker, Commander, Electronic Attack Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet, represented Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in the celebration, speaking on behalf of Capt. Mike Nortier.

United States Olympic speed skater Anna Ringsred will help the Boys and Girls Club of Coupeville kick off its summer camp with Track and Field Day Monday, June 16. Knead & Feed owner reflects over 40 years By Ron Newberry Staff Reporter

Whenever Doug Kroon wants to reminisce, he just has to glance at a wall inside his restaurant. Near the kitchen of the Knead & Feed is a painting that shows Kroon looking cool with hands in his pockets, scruff on his face and donning plaid pants representative of the groovy style of the mid 1970s. “Look at those pants,” Kroon said dryly this week. The art work, painted by Beatrice Powell, holds special meaning to Kroon because it traces the history of a family business on historic Front Street in Coupeville that is dear to him, his siblings and other relatives who’ve worked there. The painting is inspired by a photo taken of Kroon in 1974 standing near the entry of the Knead & Feed at its initial location in Mariners Court. Despite a sign on the store front establishing the restaurant’s beginning a year early, 1974 was when it all started for Kroon, who along with his brothers and business partners Thom and Jerry are celebrating the restaurant and bakery’s 40-year anniversary. Since 1975, the Knead & Feed has rested at its present location at 4 N.W. Front Street in a waterfront building that dates back to 1871. “Family is the biggest thing at this place,” Doug Kroon said, sitting and sipping a cup of coffee in the restaurant. “My father literally built the room we’re sitting in.” The Knead & Feed fea-

When the Kroons bought the portion of the building that houses the restaurant and bakery, a major renovation was in order to convert the lower floor that had long been used for storage. During the remodel, they discovered Chinese writings on the walls and Chinese coins on beams, adding validity to rumors that the building was once a Chinese laundry. From the outset, the business was run by family with all seven of the Kroon children playing a role at some point along the way. Jeannette Omar, one of four sisters, took charge from early on and ran the Knead & Feed for close to 30 years, Doug said. It wasn’t until five years ago that she retired, letting

her brothers run the business. Standing the test of time, the Knead & Feed has developed a reputation for producing its own bread and pastries, an all-day breakfast menu and lunches that feature homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. Marionberry pies are a fa-

vorite, but nothing compares to the fuss created over its cinnamon rolls. Doug Kroon points to a loyal, local following of customers and work crew for the business’ success. He said the foundation for success, hard work ethic and

an emphasis on education was instilled in the family by their parents Mel and Iris Kroon. Mel Kroon, a builder, brought his family to Coupeville in 1965 to run Camp Casey for Seattle Pacific University. Iris Kroon taught elementary school. All seven of their children earned college degrees. In turn, the Kroon brothers have focused on giving back to the community with an emphasis on helping Coupeville schools and the arts. Earlier this month, the restaurant held a special dinner with all proceeds for everything but alcohol donated to the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools. Doug Kroon said he and his brothers decided to make

Friends of Ebeys is a worthwhile summer cause As summer approaches, there will be many activities to keep the community busy. The annual summer picnic will change venues this year to Fort Casey and mix things up entertainmentwise. Kyle Waterman, executive director for Friends of Ebey’s said the event will be held by the artillery line at the fort. Last year, the fort received an Ebey’s Forever grant and the event will showcase preservation work that has been completed. The event should be a good time with special entertainment this year similar to a USO show. Tickets for the summer picnic are on sale now. The event is 4-7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26. The organization will also host a Farm-to-Table fundraiser 5:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at Willowood Farm. Chef Renee Erickson of The Whale Wins will prepare a fine dining experience utilizing local ingredients such as Penn Cove mussels, 3 Sisters Beef, Little Brown Farm and more. Tickets are also on sale and space is limited for this event. Proceeds from both events go to support Friends of Ebey’s fundraising endeavors. The Friends of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve works in cooperation with the reserve’s trust board and the National Park Service to fund projects and programs that protect, preserve and enhance the cultural and natural resources and the visitor experience of the reserve. This includes fundraising, public outreach and educational activities and building public awareness of the Reserve. The Friends of Ebey’s is the fundraising arm of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. For the past several years, Ebey’s Forever Funds have provided grants to historic homeowners in the reserve to help preserve and maintain the community’s historic integrity. Hutchinson selected to fill vacant board seat with Central Whidbey Fire Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue will swear in fire commissioner Steve Hutchinson in June. Hutchinson was one of five candidates to apply for the open position. The board of directors interviewed candidates May 13 and made an appointment May 19. Hutchinson has served as a volunteer firefighter with the district since 1988 and currently serves as an acting lieutenant at Station 51 in Coupeville. He has been employed as an airline pilot since 1975 and currently is a captain with Delta Airlines. Hutchinson will be sworn in as commissioner 5 p.m. Thursday, June 12 during the board’s regular meeting, which will be held at Station 53, 164 Race Road, Coupeville. Hutchinson is slated to serve as a commissioner until the next regular election at which time a commissioner would be elected. He will serve until the general election in November 2015. E. Kirsten Peters Rock Doc When you fill your tank, you likely see a little sticker on the pump saying part of the fuel is ethanol. Ethanol is a biofuel, which means it comes from plants like corn, rather than from fossil fuel — ancient carbon that’s been buried within the Earth for millions of years. Producing more biofuels is on the agendas of governments and private industry alike. Biofuels can potentially help nations become more energy independent. If a country can grow plants and

produce biofuels from them, that nation could potentially import less crude oil. Biofuels, if done right, also could reduce the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced in the transportation sector. But there are drawbacks, at least with corn-based ethanol. For one thing, using ethanol in our vehicles means we are essentially burning food as we tootle down the road. Food is pretty precious stuff in a hungry world, so a number of people are worried about corn-ethanol. It also takes considerable petroleum-based fuel to grow corn, harvest it and process it into ethanol. So researchers around the world are on the lookout for better ways to make biofuels. Biodiesel is another biofuel that you’ve likely heard something about. It’s blended into petroleum-based diesel to power trucks and diesel-fueled cars. Biodiesel is quite simple to make from vegetable oil. In freshman classes, I’ve

led students to make it in small batches. But if biodiesel is made from oils we eat, it has some of the same drawbacks as corn-based ethanol. Recently there was an interesting report about an advance made by scientists researching a new approach to making biodiesel. A team of researchers used genetically modified E. coli bacteria to convert sugar into a material very similar to petroleum-based diesel fuel. The fuel produced is so much like petroleum diesel, it can be used at full strength in engines. Professor John Love, a synthetic biologist at the University of Exeter, was one of the scientists involved in the work. Talking with a reporter from BBC News, he said, “What we’ve done is produced fuels that are exactly the chain length required for the modern engine and exactly the composition that is required.” Some people fear bioengineering when it comes to the food we eat, but there might be less resistance to

the approach if it is used to produce fuel rather than vittles. But there is more work to be done. E. coli doesn’t produce a lot of fuel. According to the BBC news report, it would take over 100 quarts of E. coli to produce a teaspoon of diesel fuel. “Our challenge is to increase the yield before we can go into any form of industrial production,” Love said. “We’ve got a timeframe of about three to five years to do that and see if it is worth going ahead with it.” The devil is in the details when it comes to biofuels developed so far. But don’t count researchers out — there are many good ideas being pursued all the world around. Dr. E. Missed opportunites sink Coupeville at state By Jim Waller Staff Reporter

The books “What If?” and “What Could Have Been” are thick, but the Coupeville High School baseball team was able to cram in one more page. The Wolves lost 2-1 to Rochester in a loser-out, first-round game of the state 1A baseball tournament at Anacortes’ Volunteer Field Saturday, May 24. Coupeville left nine runners on base (six in scoring position), continually letting starting Rochester pitcher Dylan Fosnacht off the hook. Rochester (18-6) went on to win the regional title by defeating Hoquiam 4-1 later Saturday afternoon and qualified for the final four in Yakima this weekend. Coupeville starter Ben Etzell continued a string of strong pitching performances, taking a two-hitter

and a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, an error allowed the Warriors’ No. 9 hitter Andy Sommer to reach base. A single by Lucas Eastman sent Sommer to third; Eastman took second on the throw. Fosnacht, the next hitter, asked for time, and Etzell interrupted his windup before the umpire granted the request, balking in Sommer with the tying run. Lucas Wilson led off the sixth with a line-shot triple. After an out, a ground ball by Wyatt Singer skipped through the drawn-in infield on the left side to plate the goahead run. Coupeville went down in order in the top of the seventh, the only inning it did not produce a base runner. Coupeville (14-11) scored first in the top of the fifth. followed with a run-scoring base hit. The Wolves needed a little more of that two-out magic throughout the game. Jake Tumblin led off the game with a bad-hop single but was gunned down stealing by Rochester’s riflearmed catcher Dustin Wilson. That may have cost the Wolves a run. An out later, Etzell singled and Trumbull doubled, putting runners on second and third. A strikeout ended the threat. Singles by Korbin Korzan and Wade Schaef led to another two-out, second and third situation in the second inning, but Fosnacht escaped by snaring Tumblin’s hot-shot up the middle for the third out. Walks put Coupeville runners on in the third and fourth innings. In the sixth, the Wolves looked primed to score. Josh Bayne led with a single and Korzan reached on an error. Rochester coach Jerry Striegel then replaced Fosnacht with Wilson on the mound. C.J. Smith put down a two-strike bunt to move the runners up. The runners held on a ground out, then Tumblin walked to load the bases. Another ground out finished the inning. Coach Willie Smith took the blame for not scoring in the inning, conceding he should have called for a squeeze bunt. Etzell pitched a six-hitter; three of the hits came in the sixth inning. He had five strikeouts and no walks. The Warriors did not have a runner past first until a two-base error in the fourth inning.

was named the Cascade Conference’s Most Valuable Player for 2014. The MVP award was a first for a Coupeville baseball player since the school joined the league. “Very well deserved and he worked very hard to get there,” coach Smith said. “Also, a nice reflection on his teammates and how good they were behind him.”

Five other Wolves received league honors. Tumblin (catcher), Kurtis Smith (outfield), Bayne (infield) and Trumbull (infield) were second-team choices; and C.J. Smith (pitcher) was named to the honorable mention list. “The five others were all well-deserved as well; a great representation of our team this year,” coach Smith said.

A long fly to center bounced once and through the fence; the umpire, however, said it cleared the fence for a home run. Blaine rallied late, scoring two in the fifth on three hits and two errors. A legitimate home run added a run in the sixth. In the seventh, the first three Blaine hitters reached base, but none scored. With two on and one out, Coupeville pitcher Bailey faced the Borderitte hitter who was awarded the phantom home run. The hitter also had two singles in the game, but Bailey got her to pop up behind first base. Second baseman Emily Coulter raced over, snared the shot fly and flipped to first baseman Hammer for the game-ending double play and a trip to state. Roberts finished with three hits, and Hammer had two hits and four RBI. Co-coach David King also praised the hustle of Roberts on a play that symbolized the effort and determination of his team. With third base uncovered, shortstop Roberts, who had the ball, sprinted to the base and dove head first, trying to tag a Borderitte who was scrambling back after rounding the base too far. Coupeville flexed its muscle in the

win over Eatonville. Maddi Strasburg slugged a home run, Hammer hit one off the fence and Haley Sherman belted two doubles for five RBI. A run-scoring single by Hammer and a two-run double by Sherman ignited a five-run first inning. The Wolves put the game away with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Bailey scored three runs and recorded seven strikeouts from the circle. Emily Licence added a run-scoring single. The offense sputtered in the loss to Lynden Christian. The Wolves had only four hits, and three came in the fifth inning thanks to Licence, Roberts and Bree Messner. Bailey singled in the fourth. Left fielder Sherman was injured trying to make a diving catch and missed the Blaine game. She may not be ready for state, King said. “This team is playing with confidence,” King said. “Different players are stepping up and contributing. Case in point, Tiffany, who got the start in game three, had an RBI single. “McKayla is a warrior. She went the distance in all three games and pitched three outstanding games. “The leaders are leading and the young players have stepped up their game. We are having productive at bats throughout.”

Walker spoke to the community and how important its support is to the military. He took time to honor local fallen veterans such as Megan McClung as well as Pearl Harbor survivors who were in attendance. Jim Stansell, a Pearl Harbor survivor, conducted a traditional bell ceremony with Boy Scout Erling Anderson from Troop 413 on Camano Island, followed by the traditional performance of TAPS by a bugler. “A lot more people attended the remembrance ceremony,” Eccles said. “Which I really appreciate because that’s what it’s really about.” After the remembrance ceremony, the All Island Community Band offered musical entertainment and people enjoyed a hot dog lunch prepared by members of the Central Whidbey Lions Club. Food was provided by Prairie Center Red Apple.
