Browns Point Lighthouse Park
3 design plans unveiled for improvement project Image Courtesy Metro Parks Tacoma / BCRA Metro Parks Tacoma has released three design options for an improvement project at Browns Point Lighthouse Park. According to Metro Parks Tacoma's Web site, the $84.3 million bond measure approved by voters in 2005 directed $500,000 toward the park to create accessible pathways and a promenade, demolish the existing parking garage, create additional parking, and provide new park furnishings. In 2008, the garage was removed and a gravel area was created for temporary parking. Three years later, roof replacement projects on Keeper's cottage, history center, boathouse, and bellhouse were completed. Last month, Metro Parks Tacoma held a public meeting to discuss Browns Point Lighthouse Park, which is located at 201 Tulalip St. NE, in Tacoma, and hear from the community about parking options, accessibility improvements, and general park enhancements. Last week, Metro Parks Tacoma held a public meeting to invite the public to review three schematic design options created by BCRA to improve the park: Neighborhood Active Design Option (pictured); Neighborhood Historic Design Option; and Neighborhood Passive Design Option. Proposed features for each de-
sign include: Neighborhood Active Design Option —Parking lot with spaces for 17 vehicles; two spaces designated ADA —Event and display area —Picnic plaza —Portable restroom —Open play area —Kayak / kite board laydown area
Walk Tacoma series continues June 4 with historic first neighborhood tour
Posted online Fri., May 23 The fifth annual Walk Tacoma series continues in June with a walking tour highlighting Tacoma’s immigrant history and historic first neighborhood. The 1.6-mile walk, sponsored by Commencement Bank, will begin at noon on Weds., June 4, at the Woolworth Building near the corner of South 11th Street and Broadway in downtown Tacoma. The walk will be led by Deputy Mayor Victoria Woodards. There is no need to pre-register for the event. Walk Tacoma 2014 is an eight-event walking series held on first and third Wednesdays, from April through August. The fun, themed walks
encourage downtown employees and residents to exercise and enjoy the outdoors by discovering the different walking routes and parks in downtown Tacoma. The walks are scheduled at the lunch hour and just after work to encourage downtown employees to walk during their workday, whether it is to and from work or at a lunch break. Walking maps of the routes are available at no cost at Downtown On the Go, 950 Pacific Ave., Suite 300, at many downtown businesses, or by contacting Meagan Kula, Downtown On the Go Coordinator, at (253) 682-1734 or dotg@tacomachamber.org.
