Zoning approved for schools projects

Members of the Lakes community gathered once again with representatives of the Mercer Island School District Wednesday, May 14 at City Hall to further review the proposed p-zone, which will allow the school district to move forward with its plans for a fourth elementary school and major remodeling of Islander Middle School and Mercer Island High School.

With several community members taking the podium, members

of the Lakes community asked the district to tweak its setbacks for the Islander Middle School project, going from setbacks of 65 feet from property lines with oneand-a-half foot setbacks with each additional foot in height to 65 feet with two-and-a-half foot setbacks, with a maximum height of 43 feet.

“It wasn’t presented before, but our design works with that,” said Mercer Island Schools owner’s representative Brandy Fox. “If that was something they wanted to do, it wouldn’t impact the school.”

The proposal at Wednesday’s

meeting was otherwise the same as the proposal from the week before, with the exception of the density of the landscape buffer at north end of the property at Island Park, which Fox says the district will be using a residential calculation to produce the additional buffer.

Regarding the hearing’s second agenda item, rezoning of public school properties to public institution p-zone, the Council received a motion at Monday night’s City Council meeting encouraging confirmation of the school district’s current plan limiting location of parking and vehicle access from S.E. 72nd Street along the western portion of the middle school site.

Senn was on her way to a seminar on early learning in Denver when she sat down with the Reporter to talk about her first term as a state Legislator and the campaign ahead.

Senn was selected as one of 20 legislators across the country to take part in the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL)

Early Learning Fellows Program. Her appointment to the program follows on her success in passing her first piece of legislation signed into law. ESHB 2519 helps kids in the child welfare system access quality early learning programs.

Senn has also been appointed to the Washington State Building Code Council.

The Reporter asked Rep. Senn what surprised her during her first term in Olympia.

processed was a revelation, she said, ticking off the number of levels of review that a bill must go through to become a law.

While most might find the process discouraging, it was reassuring, she said.

“All of the levels of review make sure the bill is thoroughly vetted,” she explained. “And the fact that a bill can be changed literally up until the last minute made it a bit less stressful.”

“I believe it is a good process,” she said.

She was also primed to see more people coming to Olympia to rally for human services and on issues that would bring out the religious community. There were not many. She said she understands that people are working and cannot make the trip. But, topics on human services are on the top of my mind, she said.

She was pleased to find that her fellow legislators were welcoming and helpful. Along with the committees she served on during the session, early learning, the environment and the budget, there are work groups that met often.

"Thirty of the Legislators last year were freshman," she said. The group met regularly as did both Democrats

and Republicans, to talk over the issues. But a great advantage she points out was that she had Clibborn and others, such as Ross Hunter, to check in with and learn the ropes.

There has been a lot to learn and take in, she said.

“I have learned that you do not have to be an expert on a topic to add value,” she said. “And I learned you have to trust as well.”

Since the session ended, she has been out doorbelling as much as she can.

She sometimes takes her son Ben, 11, with her. She finds that talking with constituents grounds her. The conversations serve as a gut check, she said.

Senn has found the multiple issues and the intensity of the job, invigorating but she worries that some issues are still left out.

At 43, Senn is the thirdyoungest woman in the legislature. As she has said before, she believes that there are not enough lawmakers with young families in the statehouse.

In addition to her son, Senn and her husband have a daughter, 8.

Senn is proud of her first bill, on early learning. "It was a real policy bill that we generated," she said. Her focus will continue to be on education, transportation, the economy and the environment.

Stinson would be youngest lawmaker ever if elected A story in the University of Washington “Daily” student newspaper said that Bill Stinson, a 20-year-old political science major endorsed by the King County GOP, was challenging Islander Judy Clibborn, who has held the position since 2003.

However, King County Elections indicate that Stinson will run against first term lawmaker, Tana Senn.

“I’ve always believed that it is important to have people engaged in the civic process. Senn said on Monday. “It is important that voters have a choice.”

I Stinson attended Bellevue High School and is affiliated with Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at UW, Young Americans for Liberty, College Republicans, and the Associated Students of ASUW Senate.

“I think that the GOP wanted someone with a fresh face and a clean slate and they saw that in me,” Stinson told the Daily.

Community news Bellevue Rotary on track for ‘Inspiration Playground’ The Rotary Club of Bellevue has partnered with the City of Bellevue to help fund and build a inclusive outdoor play environment and sensory garden suitable for all ages and abilities at the Bellevue Downtown Park. Rotary is coordinating the $4.3 million capital campaign.

In April, Microsoft Corporation contributed $100,000 to the Inspiration Playground campaign.

The Rotary of Bellevue counts many Islanders as members.

The club’s fundraising efforts have raised approximately $1,740,000 to date.

The immediate goal is to raise an additional $500,000 so construction can begin in the fall of 2015. Another $2.1 million will complete the full project build-out.

Island Firefighter Alec Munro in Oso City of Mercer Island staff and volunteers from across the Island assisted with relief and recovery effort at the recent landslide disaster in Oso. In their online newsletter, the city will profile these volunteers.

by FEMA. These highly technical rescue teams are designed to respond anywhere nationwide to assist local agencies with the rescue and recovery events.

Following the Oklahoma City Bombing, the public became more aware of these teams: WATF-1 was at that incident, and Mercer Island Fire sent two of its personnel.

He and his cohorts spent a lot of time serving as trained spotters and working with hand tools when a likely victim was located.

He reports that the extensive technical training all team-members receive prepared him for his assignment, but that the recovery of so many victims was emotionally draining.

Maneuvering in the waterlogged conditions was physically very challenging, and even tracking dogs struggled to find a scent due to widely deposited impermeable clay layers. The sheer enormity of the incident site was stunning and Alec’s most lasting impression was of the amazing destructive power that Nature can unleash.

MI Preschool Association names 2014 Exceptional Home prices on Educator Island inch up Every spring the Mercer Island Preschool Association (MIPA) names an outstanding local preschool teacher as the “Exceptional Educator” of the year. MIPA is happy to announce that this year’s Exceptional Educator award recipient is Talkna Birashk, Pre-K teacher at St. Monica School.

More than 20 nominations were submitted by local parents to a committee of MIPA representatives. The committee was impressed by the numerous submissions that exemplified Birashk as “nurturing, passionate, strong and loving.” One parent said,

The Northwest Multiple Listing Service’s report for April shows that the number of Island homes on the market remains well below historical levels.

Last month, 65 new single family homes were added to the inventory of homes for sale on the Island — down from 76 added in April a year ago.

Under 100 homes were on the market for the month.

The median price for homes sales that were finalized in April was $1.3 million up from $1.1 million a year ago.

STINSON | FROM 2 But unlike many Republicans, Stinson said he is socially liberal. Despite that, Stinson was endorsed by the King County GOP. Lori Sotelo, chair of the King County GOP told the Daily, “I know my sons' generation and Bill’s generation are much more focused on security issues, much more focused on government and fiscal issues, and a lot less concerned about social issues.”

Sotelo said Stinson has been involved with the GOP since high school.

Stinson says his fiscal principles align with traditional Republican practices. He believes that getting votes based on fiscal responsibility isn’t an issue.

The Daily story noted that Stinson was an ASUW student senator for fall quarter of both his freshman and sophomore years, and he served on the Special Appropriations Committee.

In high school, he worked with the 2012 Ron Paul campaign and is the president for the UW RSO Young Americans for Liberty, and the campus coordinator for Students for Liberty.

Police THURSDAY | 8 ACCIDENT: The driver of a car parked in the garage at 2630 77th Ave. S.E., said that she returned to her car on Friday morning at 5:45 a.m. to find a note from an unknown person that they’d seen someone strike her car. They provided the person’s license plate number. The driver noticed that she had damages to the front, driverside wheel well. When the driver contacted the owner of the offending car, he said he had parked next to the car at 6 p.m. when going to Menchies. He didn’t think he’d damaged the car in the process.

FRIDAY | 9 DUI: A 34-year-old man from Bonney Lake was taken into custody after a patrol officer detected a strong smell of alcohol emanating from a car in

the 3200 block of Island Crest Way. He was asked to take a breathalizer test, giving BAC readings of .092 and .094.

PROPERTY LOST: A 73-yearold Mercer Island man said he lost his wallet while walking from the 7900 block of 78th Ave. S.E. to the South-end QFC. His credit cards, social security number and $100 in cash, were in the wallet.

THEFT: An Island woman reports that her personal information has been stolen. She has changed her passwords multiple times and says that within 24 hours someone has requested duplicate cards for a Texas address. She has activated a fraud alert and canceled several accounts. At the time of the report, nobody had made any changes to her accounts.

Donna Elaine Sarchin

Donna Elaine Sarchin, a 59-year resident of Mercer Island, died May 5 after a brief illness. She was 92.

Donna was born October 24, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to Jacob and Sadie Shekter. The family moved to Portland when she was a girl. Donna attended Reed College in Portland, studying art, and moved to Seattle to take a job as an illustrator with Frederick & Nelson department store. She met Norm Sarchin at a Temple De Hirsch dance, and was attracted to him, she said, because his sweater had loose yarn on it and she wanted to fix it. Donna married Norm, the love of her life, in 1948. They moved to the forest that was Mercer Island’s North End in 1955, where Donna lived until now.

Donna continued her art career initially with a home weaving business, where from her loom in our basement she designed and hand-wove skirts that were sold in an exclusive shop in the Olympic Hotel. She returned to her career after her sons were in school, starting as the Estee Lauder representative at Nordstrom in Bellevue. Donna later became a sales representative for several high-end cosmetics firms, including Oscar de la Renta.

Donna was an expert seamstress, sewing most of her own dresses and some shirts for her boys in her younger days, and was an inveterate knitter. In her later life, she would spend many afternoons knitting with her friends at the Tricoter yarn shop in Madison Park. Her passion, though, was her dogs.

She brought home her first poodle in the late ‘60s, a silver toy named Jaques, and then a succession of toy and miniature poodles. She and Norm always enjoyed camping and traveling, first in a trailer towed by our 1957 sky-blue Buick, then in a motorhome where they spent their retired years touring the West, spending several months of the year at Thousand Trails campgrounds from the hill country of Texas to southern California, Arizona and New Mexico.

Donna was predeceased by Norm in July 2012. She is survived by her sons, Larry, of Mercer Island; Jeff (Sue), of Kenmore, WA; grandchildren Sarah and Collin Sarchin, niece Lynne Shekter Kluger (Ron) of Indianola, WA; and her poodles Lovey, Honey Ryder, and Hopper.

Dalton Eash, beloved husband, father, engineer and conservationist, died peacefully at the age of 91 on February 16, 2014. He will be remembered for his masterful storytelling, dry wit and humorous perspective. Dalton had an endless curiosity about life, science, maps and the written word. He collected books on his wide-ranging interests and instilled his love of reading and learning in his children by assuring that everyone had a library card by the time they could walk.

Dalton was born in Harper, Kansas, to Hazel Dalton and Jesse Eash, a pharmacist and drug store owner. From a young age he worked at the drug store soda fountain, starting as a curb-hop and eventually being promoted to soda jerk.

At the University of Kansas, Dalton majored in chemical engineering until his studies were interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps. Dalton became a pilot and flew amphibious aircraft in the South Pacific and China. When he returned to KU to complete his degree he met and soon married his true love, Mary Catherine Shatzell, with the wedding taking place in a record-breaking snowstorm on the Kansas plains. They were wonderful partners in life, the artist and the engineer, and they enjoyed 65 years together (including 46 years on Mercer Island) until her death last November. Both were active in the community and Dalton spent many years volunteering with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, leading hikes and sharing his love of the natural world.

Dalton’s career began with oil companies in Texas and Kansas but in 1956 he joined the Boeing Company where he worked for 37 years. Dalton was a life-long birder, fisherman and explorer of destinations near and far. He was also an accomplished woodworker and inventor of dozens of gadgets and patented products. Dalton was a living example of how to leave this place better than you found it. We will miss him, his stories, his strength and his humor. Dalton is survived by son Art (Karen), daughter Patti Sue, grandson Brian, sisterin-law Sue (Richard), numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

FRAUD: A 63-year-old Mercer Island woman had fraudulent charges linked to her PayPal account, which corresponded with a Bank of America Visa card. The charges date back to a week before the police report was made.

Somebody tried to open a second PayPal account with her information.

PayPal called to report an attempted purchase and any losses were avoided at the time of the police report.

ACCIDENT: A vehicle was traveling Southbound in the 2900 block of 78th Ave. S.E., when it struck a high concrete curb medium, deploying both front airbags. The driver was identified with a valid driver's license and told the responding officer that it might be time for him to stop driving. He could not explain how or why he had hit the curb.

FRAUD: A 74-year-old Mercer Island man reported his personal information stolen. Several credit cards had been opened in his name.

THEFT: An Island man in the 3000 block of 78th Ave. S.E. reported his mailbox had been pried open. He did not know if any items of mail had been stolen, but reported up to $30 in damages.

Richard W. Mellon

Richard W. Mellon, of Gibsonia, PA (formerly of Mercer Island, WA) passed away on 8 May 2014, at the age of 90. He was born 20 May 1923 in Ambridge, PA. Richard leaves his wife Roberta of 59 years of marriage.

Richard’s only son, James P. Mellon, preceded him in death in 2008 from a sudden heart attack; deeply loved uncle of Patricia (Peter) Zajac and Tim (Jayne) Mellon.

Richard received a BS Degree in Finance and Accounting in 1946 from Virginia Tech; he later completed his graduate work in California.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and served over four years in Europe.

Richard worked some 30 years for the Lockheed Corporation (now Lockheed Martin) in finance, primarily in the Mid-East. He was accompanied by his wife Roberta during the time of all of his foreign assignments.

During the past few weeks there has been a spike in locker thefts from gyms across the Eastside.

Recently, Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland and Redmond have all seen similar incidents.

Thieves are getting into lockers by shimming or prying padlocks or combination locks and sifting through personal items to take cash. The lock is often placed back on the locker afterward. Some people don’t even realize they’ve been victimized right away as their phones, wallets and other items are still present.

Several different gym franchises have reported thefts, and gyms are working closely with police in multiple jurisdictions to try to identify suspects. It appears there are multiple groups of suspects working across the Eastside. Issaquah, Kirkland and Redmond police currently have open, active investigations and all agencies are conducting area patrols as able.

Police and gyms are asking customers to do the following: Don’t bring valuables to the gym or leave them in your car; leave them at home if possible.

If your gym provides theft-resistant day lockers, take advantage of them. Use puck-style locks if possible as they are harder to defeat.

Peter E. Kern, who was facing criminal charges after the car he was driving crashed into a building on Island Crest Way last November, has died.

Kern, died early Saturday, April 5, at an apartment at 788 110th Avenue N.E. in Bellevue. The King County Medical Examiner’s office said that Kern died of selfinflicted stab wounds and have ruled the death a suicide.

Trooper Chris Webb, Public Information Officer for the Washington State Patrol told the Reporter that on Nov. 8, 2013, a WSP trooper clocked Kern traveling East-bound in the I-90 express lanes at 150 m.p.h. in a luxury 2013 Porsche Panamera.

The trooper, driving a fully-marked State Patrol vehicle began pursuit around 11:30 p.m., with his lights and sirens fully engaged, court papers said.

The trooper observed Kern exiting onto Island Crest Way. At the S.E. 30th Street intersection, the Porsche struck a street sign and became airborne before hitting the Mercer Park Dentistry building owned by Islander, Clyde Curfew. The car caught fire after impact.

The Mercer Island School District’s Board of Directors passed Resolution 620 Thursday, May 15, which provided for the issuance and sale of unlimited tax general obligation bonds of the district in the aggregate principal amount of $45,260,000 as authorized by resolution of the Board of Directors and approved by the qualified electors of the District at a special election held on February 11.

“This sale represents the first of potentially three bond sales designed to structure debt and maximize the district’s ability to keep the tax rates flat and stable,” said school district CFO Dean Mack.

Who knows why the incidence of breast cancer is so high in our state? One theory is it might be a relative lack of vitamin D. This is why I am excited about the Komen funded study on obesity and vitamin D that was just completed by Dr. Anne McTiernan, MD, PHD Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. This research is discussed in another article in today’s paper. It is one of eight local breast cancer research studies together totaling $3.7 million dollars in Komen global medical research funding spent right here in Puget Sound. Personally, I would like to see more study into the unique factors affecting breast health in our Northwest region.

Beyond the statistics, we care about breast cancer because so many of us know someone whose life has been touched by this disease. It might be a mother, a daughter, an aunt, a sister, a wife, a close friend or you. For me, the matriarch of my family, my Aunt Judy, is a breast cancer survivor. And, now that I am a part of a Komen Puget Sound family, I have become close to the many Komen staff, donors and volunteers who have either survived breast cancer or are currently battling this disease.

I am inspired by their stories every day, and they reinforce within me a personal sense of urgency regarding our mission. If a woman has to decide whether to pay for her family’s meals or her breast cancer treatments, she needs our support today. With 100 women in our state diagnosed with breast cancer every week, we need find a cure for breast cancer now. When lives are at stake, there is no time to lose.

Seventy-five percent of net donations stays local to provide critical services like free mammograms and breast cancer treatment support for low income women.

The remaining 25 percent goes directly to Susan G. Komen global medical research to better diagnose, treat and ultimately cure breast cancer. Currently, Komen’s global medical research program is investing over $3.7 million locally into Puget Sound research projects.

You also will have access to email templates to help you solicit donations. We will provide you with lots of fundraising tips and you can even “Fundraise on Facebook.”

Some Things You Should Know about Breast Cancer

Society, the National Cancer Institute and Susan G. Komen all agree that women age 40 and older should have mammograms every 1 to 2 years. Early detection is the key to survival. The five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early, is 99 percent.

When detected at the latest stage, the survival rate drops to 23 percent.

Every week, 100 Western Washington women are diagnosed with breast cancer, which continues to be the second most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the U.S., after skin cancer. We don’t yet know the exact causes of breast cancer, and many myths about breast cancer continue to exist. But probably the best way to prevent and survive a breast cancer diagnosis is to be informed.

All women are at risk for breast cancer.

Although this disease is more common in women over the age of 40, younger women can and do get breast cancer as well. To reduce risk, here are some things you should know.

Last September I published my first book. I called it “The Boob Blog” because it started out as a blog.

I started the blog to keep family and friends up to speed on my progress and what was happening to me as I dealt with breast cancer. I realized what was happening was so unreal I had to expand on it — thus the book.

When you’re given a diagnosis of cancer, it’s frightening. Emotions and thoughts swell up that are hard to explain.

Why me?

I’m always been very healthy. I work out.

I eat pretty healthy, except when I crave sweets. I used to be a body builder (30 some years ago). How could this happen?

• Know what is normal for you. See your health provider right away if you notice a lump, swelling, changes in breast size or a new pain in one spot that does not go away.

• Live a healthy lifestyle. Maintain a healthy weight. Add exercise to your routine. Limit your use of alcohol.

Breastfeed, if you can. And, since we live in the Northwest, current studies point to maintaining a normal level of vitamin D as helpful.

Above all, the best advice I can give is to ask you to take an active role in your own breast health. And if you are over 40 years old, and have yet to be been screened for breast cancer, do it today. There is no time to lose.

It’s because cancer has its own agenda.

And in the case of breast cancer, if you’re female, you are a target.

Think of seven women you love dearly.

One of them will get a diagnosis of breast cancer.

I moved to Seattle over the Labor Day weekend of 2009 to start a new life, not really knowing anyone in this area. My diagnosis came one year and four months later. I was pretty much on my own, except when one of my friends from Alaska, my home state, or Idaho, where I moved here from, would come to help. I now realize how strong I was because I had to deal with this pretty much on my own, which I’ve come to learn, is not the norm.

But I didn’t know any different.

I dedicated “The Boob Blog” to survivors, current and future patients and anyone who has had their life touched by any kind of cancer.

In the book I talk about how I’ve always had a pretty wicked sense of humor, and that is what kept me going. In chapter three, “Fact Finding,” I said “tomorrow is my brain scan. It will be interesting to see if there’s anything in there.” Well, there wasn’t (meaning, no tumors)!

I talk about chemo. It’s hell. There’s really no other way to describe it. I did chemo first, which is called neoadjuvant therapy.

You can’t think straight. You are tired all the time. And I thought, okay, at least I’ll lose some weight with cancer. NO! You gain weight because they give you steroids to counteract the side effects of the chemo, so you want to eat more, and you gain

When I was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in November, 2012, I was just 28 years old. Even though my family has a history of breast cancer, my aunt and cousin on my mother’s side, I was still shocked to be diagnosed at such a young age. My husband had left me and my boys the year before, and I was just starting to get my life back on track. I was attending community college full time. Then cancer turned my whole world upside down.

I didn’t understand why I had breast cancer, but I believed there must be a reason why. I was determined to find the positive in this experience and to learn from it. I took medical leave from the community college I was attending. I had moved in with my parents after my husband had left me and the boys. It was there I found my silver lining.

Breast cancer turned my whole world upside down, but it also brought my family closer together as a family. My parents moved quickly from a feeling of helplessness to providing me the loving support that sustained me through my treatments. Most importantly, they would look into the faces of my two boys, CJ (age five) and Jamison (age two), and they would tell them “momma is going to be all right.”

Breast cancer taught me many life lessons, chiefly to live one day at a time and get the most out of living. I participated in the Race for the Cure last year, and I walked as a survivor. I had just completed my chemotherapy, and the walk was so exhausting. But it was also so amazing. We weren’t sad; we were celebrating – celebrating life! I met many new friends who had experienced breast cancer themselves, and they really understood my journey and all the emotions involved. I wish every cancer patient could experience the walk and the survivor’s celebration. You feel so much love and support from complete strangers.

When the picture was taken with me and my boyfriend, Michael, I was filled with joy. Nothing could hold me down. That day at the Race, I felt I no longer had to battle anything I hadn’t already won.

I am happy to share that last January I had a complete scan and found my cancer is now in remission. I am now back in college, and I am working towards being a registered nurse. I want to work in oncology and hopefully inspire others experiencing breast cancer, and give them the hope to fight this terrible disease.

The other day, I met with someone who was diagnosed with breast cancer and wanted to talk to me about it. I told her now you have to be strong, and you will surprise yourself by just how strong you can be. You have to focus on your desire to see tomorrow and find the reason for why you want to see tomorrow. For me, it was my two boys, CJ and Jamison.

Then, for a little extra fun, when I had one of my first MRIs, a tech called to say there was a “spot” on my appendix. My oncologist told me not to worry about it. On the evening of May 25, 2011, I knew something was terribly wrong. You guessed it. Appendicitis. So, it had to come out.

That set me back a little from the chemo schedule. I am very much a planner and in control of my life, so for me all of this was really hard because I was not the one in control. The disease was.

Once I was back on track, I went into phase II of the chemo, which was the hard stuff. It was a combination of two drugs, adriamycin and cytoxan; adriamycin is also referred to as the red devil, and it didn’t take long to figure out why. That’s when my hair really started to go, and tired took on a whole new meaning.

What made my journey unique is that I really did my best to try to keep it normal. I continued to do things I enjoyed as much as I could. I went zip-lining and kayaking after I had a uni-lateral mastectomy. And it kept me strong, physically and mentally.

I don’t forget my medical team in the book at all. They were all so wonderful.

My medical oncologist, Dr. Kaplan, my surgeon, Dr. Beatty, my plastic surgeon, Dr. Isik, and the oncology nurses and all the nurses were nothing short of angels.

My final day of chemo was bittersweet, because I had to say goodbye to those wonderful nurses.

Many women don’t bother with

reconstruction. But I felt I was still too young not to do it. I opted for a tram-flap, which was another long journey. The tram-flap is an amazing procedure, but had I known how painful it would be, I might have re-thought it. I was in rough, rough shape for a good month after the surgery.

I had to have constant care for three weeks, so thankfully I had three different girlfriends come in week shifts to care for me.

I am healed now, but I still have occasional twinges of pain, from nerves reconnecting I suppose.

By December 2012 I moved into my very own little condo in West Seattle. I bought at the bottom of the market and I love my place. I have a view of Puget Sound, which was my priority. I love being able to sit on my deck in the summer and see the Sound and the Olympic Mountains and to walk along the shore.

I participated in my first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure last June, and I will be doing it again this year. I’m also the PR chair for this year’s American Cancer Society, West Seattle, Relay for Life. The fight can’t end until cancer is eradicated forever.

Extending Hope to Cancer Patients and their Families

W

hen Anna heard the news she was pregnant, she and her husband were overjoyed. Up to this point they had devoted their lives to providing a safe, nurturing home for foster children. While they had a large family of six foster children, they welcomed the news of another child in their lives. But then, shortly afterwards, Anna also received the news that she had breast cancer.

After the baby was born, Anna underwent surgery to have the cancer removed, and then she began chemotherapy. Overwhelmed by the unexpected medical expenses, she turned to her mother who put her in touch with one of Cancer Lifeline’s financial navigator’s.

The navigator worked helped with the application for aid from the Komen Puget Sound Patient Assistance Fund. Support from the Komen fund helped to keep the heat on in Anna’s home as well as provide meal support for her and her family. Once Anna’s financial situation was stabilized, she was able to address her medical needs and is now doing well.

Both financially and emotionally, Cancer Lifeline helped Anna move from hopelessness to the survivor she is today.

Forty years ago, Cancer Lifeline began service as a 24-hour phone line designed to offer information and provide emotional support to patients and families affected by cancer. Over the years of carefully listening to the needs of cancer patients and survivors,

the organization added other programs to provide all people touched by cancer with high-quality emotional, financial, and health and wellness services.

For the past nine years, Cancer Lifeline has administered the Komen Puget Sound Patient Assistance Fund (KPAF) to provide low-income breast cancer patients like Anna with financial and emotional support to help stabilize their lives and allow them to remain in treatment.

The organization is Komen Puget Sound’s second largest grantee, after the Washington State Department of Health. With the ongoing economic downturn, KPAF and Cancer Lifeline’s patient financial assistance program has been particularly vital for vulnerable breast cancer patients. It is one of the few programs in the Puget Sound area that helps patients at risk of losing housing, utilities or other basic essentials due to the expense of cancer treatments, loss of employment and/or insurance needs due to illness.

“Cancer Lifeline has truly been a lifeline for patients who have nowhere else to go,” says Elisa Del Rosario, Komen Puget Sound Director of Grants, Education and Advocacy. “They meet a critical need for women and families in our community, with staff and volunteers who exhibit the utmost caring for patient’s wellbeing.”

In addition to addressing the health and financial needs of cancer patients, Cancer Lifeline also

provides important mental well-being programs, including classes in artistic expression. These Creative Expression workshops are open to all people living with cancer – patients, survivors, family members, friends and co-workers. Lead by trained facilitators, classes may include card making, painting, collage, fiber arts or writing. By tapping into their creative skills, participants learn to cope while navigating through their cancer experience.

Investing in Research to Find a Cure for Breast Cancer – Worldwide and Right Here at Home By Dr. Anne McTiernan, MD, PHD. Thirty years ago, Susan G. Komen was founded on a promise to end breast cancer forever. Since then, the organization has worked towards fulfilling that promise by investing more than $790 million into breast cancer research. That makes Komen the largest non-government funder of breast cancer research in the world.

Did you know that Komen is currently investing over $3.7 million of their global breast cancer research program right here into active medical studies in the Puget Sound region?

One Komen grant recipient is Dr. Mary-Claire King at the University of Washington. King is working to uncover new genes that will better identify women at risk for inherited breast cancer. Other Komen grant recipients include some of my colleagues at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. For example, one Komen grantee is working to uncover a simple, noninvasive blood test that, when done in combination with a mammogram, will significantly increase accuracy in detecting breast cancer at an early stage, when it is most curable.

I am working at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center on an exciting Komen funded study that looks at vitamin D insufficiency and weight, two interrelated risk factors for breast cancer. We have such an epidemic of obesity and lack of exercise in our country. This is why I believe a study into these areas can have a significant impact on better understanding these risk factors for breast cancer.

Many of you may be aware that vitamin D comes from the sun and helps build better bones, but there is evidence that it might also help in prevention of breast cancer. This is particularly important for us living in the Northwest where, unfortunately, many of us are not getting enough vitamin D due to a relative lack of sunlight, and other factors like body weight. Overweight individuals are at increased risk of low vitamin D levels. That’s possibly because excess fat absorbs and holds onto vitamin D, making it unavailable to the body.

Vitamin D may be helpful in reducing the risk of breast cancer in a number of ways. It could reduce production of fat tissue, which would result in lowering breast cancer risk factors related to obesity. Vitamin D by itself has also been associated with a reduction in the initiation of cancer in laboratory experiments.

We have recently completed a study that enrolled 218 women who were overweight with low Vitamin D levels in a year-long, nutrition and exercise based weight loss program. Participants met regularly with a study nutritionist to learn strategies for healthy eating and weight loss, and worked closely with our exercise specialists on a moderate-intensity aerobic exercise program.

As a part of this study, half of these women were randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of vitamin D. We found that women whose vitamin D levels rose to what is considered a healthy level lost significantly more weight and body fat, and they lost significantly

more inches around their waist. This means that women should have their blood levels of vitamin D tested by their medical provider.

If their levels are too low, they should work with their provider to ensure that any vitamin D pills they take are raising their vitamin D to a healthy level. These results were recently Anne McTiernan, MD, PHD is a researcher, Public Health Sciences, published in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

To our knowledge, there are no prior studies on the effect of vitamin D and weight on breast cancer prevention. So, this study is highly novel. If positive results follow, as we hope, this research will translate into clinical and public health practices that will provide women and physicians additional options for reducing risk for breast cancer.

In the meantime, there is one thing we do know.

When it comes to breast cancer, exercise and weight control are like wearing a seat belt. They reduce your risk, and might even save your life.

Island boys soccer ready to make final push to state

After losing at home to Bellevue in its league finale, the Mercer Island boys soccer team knew something had to change if they wanted to stick around in the postseason.

It started May 10 with a come-from-behind victory at Mount Si that saw three goals from captain Ryan Hill. Then behind another three goals from Hill, Mercer Island topped Liberty 4-2 in the 3A KingCo tournament title game at Liberty High School Tuesday, May 13, earning a trip to the 3A state tournament as District 2’s number one seed in the state bracket. Mercer Island hosted Mountan View Tuesday, May 20 after the

“I know it’s strange to say, but losing to Bellevue gave everyone a sense of reality, and they came into that first game of KingCo play running on full throttle,” said coach Colin Rigby. “The Bellevue loss was definitely like a slap in the face saying, ‘hey, you guys wanna go farther in the season, you’re going to need to start picking up your game,’ and the Bellevue game pushed us to do that.”

Kicking off its postseason on the road, Mercer Island refused to let Mount Si get away, with Hill responding to each Wildcat score, finding the back of the net with the go-ahead strike in the 48th minute. The Islanders carried its momentum to its second-round match-

up against Liberty, taking a 2-0 first-half lead with goals from Hill and Daniel Espeleta. Two more goals from Hill in the 51st and 71st minutes gave the Islanders a commanding 4-1 lead, as well as Hill’s second straight hat trick.

Rigby said six goals in two games from his striker was an incredible feat by Hill, but also a testament to the Islanders’ play as a team.

“When goals come from one player like that, it’s because the team is moving the ball the right way and finding players who put it away,” said Rigby. “With Sean Bender and Daniel Sims on the outside, it’s

Girls golf gets back to winning ways in KingCo tournament Girls rebound from loss that snapped winning streak

Heading into the KingCo medalist tournament after seeing a 75-match win streak snapped, Mercer Island golf instructor Tim Okamura felt the girls golf team needed a laugh. “[Tim] said, ‘hey, don’t forget to have fun.’ That brought some giggles to the girls,” said head coach

Don Papasedero. “The wisest thing to do was to get them to giggle before they started.”

The Mercer Island girls golf team bounced back from its first match loss in over six years to take the top spot in the KingCo medalist tournament Monday, May 12, posting the match’s lowest team score of 431 and advancing five girls to the district tournament.

The Islanders finished 16 strokes ahead of Bellevue, which placed second with a team score of 447.

Interlake tied Mount Si for third with a score of 474.

When asked if the Islanders played with an added chip on its shoulder after losing to Bellevue in its final conference match, Papasedero shot it down, saying the Islanders were worried more about themselves than the opponents.

“Every girl shot below average, they really excelled,” said Papasedero.

“They went hard, practiced hard and did well.”

Freshman Rachel Fujitani had the match’s second-lowest score,

posting a 74 to lead the Islanders. Carsen Harkins posted an 87 to place eighth, Kate Peterson had an 88 to finish ninth, Giovanna Orecchio shot a 90 to finish 12th and Molly White had a score of 92 to take 17th.

Katie Rorem earned the alternate berth, besting Sammamish’s Myra Maza in a playoff after both posted scores of 93.

With five girls advancing to the district round, Mercer Island boasts the most representatives from a KingCo school, something

not lost on Papasedero.

For Harkins, one of the biggest things that stuck out from the KingCo tournament was when Rorem had to play the tiebreaker hole with the alternate berth at stake.

“That moment it became a team thing, standing at the hole and giving her the best support we could, and [letting] her know the whole team was there supporting her,” said Harkins.

While the focus may shift toward individual players with the top individual finishers advancing as the

postseason progresses, Papasedero says the team concept remains throughout for the Islanders.

“No matter how far we go, the girls always ask each other how their teammates are doing and look to team scores. They’re very interested in how the team did,” he said. “They’re pretty invested on being a team, that goes on this Monday and the following week. It’s kind of how they do business.”

Season ends at KingCo for Islander baseball

They did it this time last year. The did again on the last day of league competition. And in the consolation round of the KingCo tournament, well, Bellevue made for a bad case of deja vu for Mercer Island baseball.

For the second year in a row, Bellevue ended Mercer Island’s season in the KingCo tournament, beating the Islanders 2-0 in a lose-out game Wednesday, May 14 at Bannerwood Park. The loss marked a tough end for the Islanders, who coming off big wins over Juanita, Liberty and Mount Si, were tied with Bellevue for KingCo’s top spot heading into the final game of league competition. That game’s outcome? A 5-4 loss to Bellevue.

“I don’t want to say anything changed other than the quality of the opponent,” said coach Dominic Woody of how the season ended. “Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to your opponent. You can’t complain too much, especially when you’re not scoring runs.”

Offense was hard to come by for Mercer Island in the KingCo tournament, with the Islanders scoring one run in its two tournament games. After getting a first-round bye, the Islanders fell 2-1 in its matchup with Mount Si on May 12. Wednesday’s loseout matchup with Bellevue was dominated by pitching, with Will Mansfield holding the Wolverines scoreless until the sixth inning, when Bellevue scored on

a sacrifice grounder and a sacrifice fly.

Woody said he felt his team hit its stride a little bit early in the year, starting slow before putting up runs in the middle part of the season, when the Islanders put up nine runs in a win over Bellevue, 12 in a win over Juanita and 11 in a win over Liberty.

“The runs can be misleading when you see how many errors the other team made and how many freebies you got,” he added.

“You don’t see as many mistakes from the other team in the playoffs and

sometimes it comes down to what you don’t do.”

The Islanders graduate six seniors from this year’s roster: Bennett Dammeier, Chris Lawler, Keegan Ogard, Aidan Plummer, Zach Rothenberg and Jake Stenberg. When asked about the graduating players, Woody called it a unique situation that he had with the seniors on his roster.

“I met these guys five years ago, being their coach in 8th grade. It’s been a pleasure to watch them mature from young boys to young men now,” he said.

But noting that the varsity team featured a freshman and two sophomores this year, Woody believes the future looks bright for the Islanders.

“I expect big things from our younger guys going forward, we should be right back up there competing for it next year,” he said.

“I think we’re on the right path. Somebody’s going to be the first class to get us over the hump.”

Mercer Island track and field competed in the 3A KingCo championships, with events wrapping up Friday, May 16 at Redmond High School. The boys placed fifth with a score of 75, while the girls finished fourth with a team score of 119.33.

In the girls competition, Mercer Island saw winners in the 400, 4x400 relay, shot put and discus events. Piper Casey won the 400 meters with a time of 58.11, while Victoria Gersch placed third and Kate Miller fifth. Sarah Bjarnason, Gersch, Miller and Piper Casey won the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:02.74, and Emily Bassett took the shot put and discus events, throwing for 35’6 and 106’3, respectively.

For the boys, Eric Schulz took the 800 with a time of 1:55.44, with Dylan Lesko

right behind him at 1:55.88 and Nathan Gallatin rounding out the top three. The group of Schulz, Emerson Schulz, Ethan Vu and Lesko took the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:25.3.

Ethan Vu took fourth in the 200, Nathan Cummings placed third in the 1600 and Greyson Weltyk finished third in the high jump and second in the triple jump.

Back-to-back hat tricks was a new feat for Hill, who’s playing on a broken left pinkie toe. With his second hat trick, Hill scored his 16th goal of the season, surpassing last season’s tally of 13.

Coming from a striker position that lives and dies on such stretches, both the coach and the player hope to harness Hill’s current streak going forward.

“For me, it’s about reminding myself that I have the potential to be that kind of player,” said Hill. “Not playing timidly or holding back, staying confident but humble, having respect for the opponent because they’re there for a reason, too. I don’t need to get the job done all by myself. The only way I’m going to be successful is if the team is successful.”

To continue the team’s success, Hill said the

Islanders can’t get too far ahead of themselves and must remember the little things that got them to this point. On a team that appears to be hitting its stride, Hill believes good things will happen if the Islanders can maintain that focus.

“If we continue to do what we’ve been doing, it’ll continue to work,” said Hill. “I don’t think there’s a lot of teams that are as unified as we are right now. We definitely have a good sense of unity within the team.”

All Conference Islanders Mercer Island had five members of the boys soccer team named to the 2A/3A All Conference soccer team.

Sean Bender, Nate Schuler and Ryan Hill were named to the first team, while Derek Sims and Daniel Espeleta earned second team honors. Daniel Sims, Scott Montague, Matt Hansen and Sean Nevin all earned honorable mention.

2014 Washington girls high school lacrosse All-Conference teams named

The Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association today announced the 2014 AllConference teams for Girls Varsity high school lacrosse.

Sixty honorees from 36 high schools across the state made the annual list of All-State selections including high school teams from the South Sound, Seattle, Eastside, West Sound and North Sound areas. The list includes 20 studentathletes making the list for the second consecutive year and four three-time selections.

The South Sound tops all regions in the state with 20 All-Conference honorees. Among them is Graham-Kapowsin High School with six selections, Stadium High School with four, Auburn Riverside, Curtis and Emerald Ridge each had two and Auburn Mountainview, Gig Harbor, Peninsula and White River High Schools all with one.

Sports Briefs Issaquah ends season for Mercer Island girls lacrosse Mercer Island girls lacrosse saw its season end Friday, May 9, as the Islanders lost its first round state tournament matchup to Issaquah 13-5 at Skyline Community Fields in Sammamish.

Hannah Paborsky led Mercer Island in scoring with two goals, with Leah Akins, Holly Waggoner and Leah Paborsky also scoring for the Islanders.

In goal, Allesandra Dunbar had nine saves.

The Islanders finished its season 3-2-1 in the Alki League standings and 5-7-2 overall. Holly Waggoner was named to the Alki Conference’s AllConference team.

Season ends at KingCo for Islander fastpitch

After Mercer Island rallied from a one-run deficit to take a 6-4 lead in its KingCo tournament matchup with Bellevue, Bellevue’s Kristie Bennett slammed a threerun homerun to give the Wolverines a 7-6 win in dramatic fashion Thursday, May 15 at Hartmann Park in Redmond. The loss ended the season for the Islanders.

Squaring off for the second time in a week, Bellevue led 2-0 after the first inning and extended its lead to 4-0 after four.

Mercer Island managed to close the gap to 4-3 in the fifth, tacking on three more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead.

But with two outs and a full count, Bennett struck in the bottom of the seventh to give Bellevue the win.

Bennett finished 1-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. For the Islanders, Morgan Peyou went 4-4 with two triples, two RBIs and two runs scored and Makenna Pellerin went 3-4 with a triple and an RBI. Mercer Island finished its season 4-10 in conference standings and 9-12 overall.

at this point in time, for the next few years, we want to focus on the agricultural industry.”

Bassett says just as the market has brought an element of community to the Island, so has it changed farmers’ habits.

She’s noticed several partnerships that have grown out of vendors working side-by-side. Realizing the demand for their produce, a number of farmers have combined operations to maximize their growing potential.

Farmers, who may have only a couple of acres, may share or swap space with a neighbor: “They’re working together [to make] more cucumbers or more lettuce…They’re joining forces, which is really nice to see.”

And market organizers are similarly combining forces. Early in the markets’ history, some small Island business owners were wary the influx of new vendors would hurt the local economy.

The market and Terry Moreman of the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, began brainstorming ways to bring those businesses into the fold. This year, they will debut a new program that encourages residents to explore their city.

The Chamber is putting together a booklet that lists businesses and service providers. Marketgoers are then asked to visit at least ten over the course of the farmers market season, for a chance to be entered in

a raffle and other prizes. Residents may also receive a small token for each individual visit.

“We think it will be very successful. [We’re creating] this treasure hunt. We want people to hang onto the book and visit these businesses,” says Bassett.

Last year, the market was awarded Business of the Year by the Chamber.

That symbiotic relationship doesn’t end there.

The market will also be hosting three interns, a program started last year, but expanded this season.

Students from Bellevue College and MIHS will help with social media and conduct a price comparison with agricultural businesses in the region.

Janine Bloomfield was trained as an ecosystem ecologist — working in climate change and environmental policy — but about 14 years ago, she found herself in another field. Bloomfield began practicing “mindfulness,” a state of active or open attention on the present. She was initially interested in it from a philosophy and theology standpoint, until her son entered Mercer West Elementary and Bloomfield decided to share the practice with others, young and old.

Bloomfield explains it from her background in research: “If you’re going to take a sample of something you have to determine exactly what’s there. You’re not going to determine ‘Well, I like that sample better than the other’…You can also apply this to emotions, thoughts, feelings, pain, the whole spectrum of the human experience. That’s the power of it.”

Mindfulness lessons are gaining momentum in the Seattle area. Bloomfield teaches in West Mercer; Island Park recently began piloting classes and Crest Learning Center has also accepted volunteers. This spring, the district’s Parent Teacher Association will discuss incorporating it more thoroughly into district curriculum.

Bloomfield says the program transitions seamlessly into much of what students are already learning about emotional self-regulation and conflict resolution on the playground: “An element of the classes is bringing in compassion and kindness...

What does it mean to notice another person? What does it tell you about the way they look or the way they’re holding themselves?...We’re teaching kids to think before they react.”

Bloomfield teaches in small 15 to 20 minute seg-

ments. She begins each session by ringing her chime, a small, tubular instrument that rings like a bell that encourages students to focus on their breath and the reverberations of the sound. Bloomfield then goes through any number of exercises. In one, she’ll hand students an ice cube, ask that they hold it in their hand and process the sensation without attaching assumptions like “cold” or “pain” to the experience.

Many credit our technology saturated culture with the popularity of mindfulness. As it becomes harder to unplug, it becomes more important to teach simple meditation exercises. And teachers are taking note.

Bloomfield has heard from teachers who say their kids are more focused in the classroom, can better handle stress before a test and boast of results at home.

Though it’s been embraced by religions like Buddhism, Bloomfield is quick to point out that it is a secular practice.

And the benefits are farreaching. Bloomfield is launching a start-up with her husband, called Coherent Knowledge Systems, a software company that uses artificial intelligence. The last year has been a steep learning curve but she says mindfulness exercises have helped: “To really be present is what needs to happen in a start-up. That’s how you function in something that’s continually changing.”

Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension.
