Theatre at Meydenbauer Center

Welcome to the 2014 Bellevue Jazz Festival!

and His Latin Jazz Band

We eagerly invite you to explore this year’s exceptional lineup of featured artists. They’re ready to deliver world-class talent and powerful expressions of one of America’s great original art forms.

Friday, May 30 • 7:30 pm • $35 ($20 students) For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straight ahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. His influences are numerous, but among the more prominent figures that inform his music are two of the primary architects of Latin jazz – conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

Headliners Pancho Sanchez and Bill Frisell take to the main stage at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center. Carlos Cascante Y Su Tumbao and the East-West Trumpet Summit fill Bake’s Place on the festival’s opening nights. You’ll discover many of our top local jazz musicians and a host of all-star youth performers at more than 40 free performances throughout downtown. Bellevue’s jazz festival history dates back to 1978 when the City of Bellevue first hosted a festival at Bellevue College. The festival returned in 2008 under the direction of the Bellevue Downtown Association with a focus on showcasing premier world and regional talent and educating emerging audiences. Now in our 7th year, we celebrate this festival tradition with you in one of the West Coast’s most vibrant and fastest growing urban hubs. You’ll find everything you need to make the most of your weekend at the cultural attractions, restaurants and shops that fuel our downtown’s community and its creative spirit.

Theatre at Meydenbauer Center Beautiful Dreamers featuring Eyvind Kang & Rudy Royston Saturday, May 31 • 7:30 pm • $35 ($20 students) Since launching his recording career as leader in 1983 on the ECM label, guitarist Bill Frisell has spent much of the past 30 years in studios and on tour. Bill is a Grammy winner and three-time nominee including a 2009 nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. He is also a recipient of the inaugural Doris Duke Artist Award in 2012. His distinctive guitar tones, colors, and harmonic sensibilities make Frisell one of the most sought-after collaborators in contemporary music.

Thursday, May 29 • 8:00 pm • $20 Tumbao is a six-piece Latin Jazz band that plays a variety of rhythms from Boleros to Timba and Joropo to Danzón. This exhilarating group is comprised of some of the Puget Sound area’s hottest musicians who hail from all over the world. Known for keeping a firm foundation in Jazz but also exploring the realms of Caribbean and Latin genres, Tumbao keeps audiences moving and living in the music from the first note to the last. Tumbao is comprised of Carlos Cascante (vocal), Thomas Marriott (trumpet), Jeff Busch (drums), Julio Jáuregui (piano & vocals), Dean Schmidt (bass) and Edsson Otero (congas).

East-West Trumpet Summit

with Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott featuring George Colligan Wednesday, May 28 • 8:00 pm • $20 Trumpeters Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott make up the front line of this power-packed quintet, featuring a special guest appearance by pianist George Colligan. Both veterans of their respective scenes, the two trumpeters bring their formidable abilities and influences to bear on arrangements of jazz classics and original material. Representing the sensibilities and styles of both coasts of the United States, this band covers a good deal of stylistic territory while remaining both lyrical and exciting.
