The groundbreaking ceremony at the Gordon Family YMCA site in Sumner took place April 28. Speakers at the event included Mayor Dave Enslow, Puyallup/ Sumner Chamber President Shelly Schlumpf and Sen. Pam Roach. The project was a collaboration between the city of Sumner, YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties. The contractor is Adolfson & Peterson Construction based in Tacoma. The plan for the YMCA includes a 110,000 square feet community center, arts center, gym, climbing wall, racquetball court, track and pool. Approximately 22,000 people are expected to use the YMCA that covers 10 acres and is estimated to cost approximately $35 million. According to Adolfson & Peterson Construction spokeswoman Nichole Zuger-Cheney, the building materials chosen will provide an energy-efficient facility and reduce the effects of long-term deterioration caused by air and moisture content. The architecture was designed to blend in with the environment in a residential neighborhood at the corner of 64th Street East and 160th Avenue East. The highest military honor a person in the armed forces can receive is a Medal of Honor. On May 13 former Bonney Lake resident Army Sgt. Kyle White will be awarded this honor
