Baby Show & Tell connects local families and babies story by STACI MATTHES, FIRST STEP FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Parents of newborns up to 3 months old are invited to Baby Show & Tell.

The free gatherings, offered by First Step Family Support Center in Port Angeles, are designed to provide support and encouragement while giving parents the opportunity to connect with other parents in the community.

“Bringing home a baby is both a joyous and stressful occasion,” said Nita Lynn, First Step’s executive director.

“The best way to navigate through this time of celebration and significant change is with company — others who are experiencing the same challenges and delights.”

That’s why First Step, a nonprofit agency which provides for the healthy development of children and families through parenting education classes, home-visiting programs and Kaleidoscope Play & Learn Groups, has launched this program designed entirely for the new parent in mind, Lynn added.

Baby Show & Tell is offered the third Monday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon at First Step’s Drop-In Center, 325 E. Sixth St. in Port Angeles.

Participants are encouraged to share their birthing stories. A variety of topics will be discussed including how to comfort a baby with colic and how to help older siblings adjust to the new baby.

“Parents who are supported and find encouragement through this major life change of bringing home a baby are less likely to withdraw and suffer from postpartum depression and isolation,” Lynn said.

“These meet and greets will provide helpful tips and information about other First Step programs and, most importantly, introductions to other families with children the same ages.”

“They will enter kindergarten at the same time and graduate the same year.

“Friendships among children and parents formed at Baby Show & Tell could potentially last a lifetime.”

Upcoming dates for Baby Show & Tell are Mondays May 19, June 16, July 21, Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17, and Dec. 15.

Since 1972, First Step has provided support and education services to thousands of Clallam County families.

Last year, the agency served nearly 5,000 adults and children, the majority of whom are low-income, through family-centered programs to meet the needs of parents and their children in a respectful and responsible manner.

Community gardens are as much about community as they are about gardening.

They are learning environments that can bring social, environmental, cultural, nutritional and financial benefits to participants and neighborhoods.

A community garden is any piece of land — publicly or privately owned — that is gardened by a group of unrelated people.

These gardens have been shown to: n Increase access to fresh, nutritionally rich foods, often by contributing produce to local food banks and soup kitchens. n Nurture interest in nutrition, resulting in healthier diets. n Create opportunities for recreation and exercise. n Foster good mental health. n Provide a place for gardeners of all experience levels to share knowledge and skills.

n Provide opportunities for intergenerational and cross-cultural connections. n Beautify neighborhoods and be a catalyst for neighborhood and community development.

Community gardens can be found in neighborhoods, at schools and churches, connected to institutions such as food banks or hospitals, and associated with residential housing units.

An American tradition is to clean up a vacant lot and turn it into a productive community garden.

Some community gardens are grown collectively, with everyone working together (sometimes called communal gardening). Others are split into clearly divided plots, each managed by a different individual or group (sometimes called P-patch).

Most community gardens have “common areas” with shared upkeep and provide participants at least some tools, hoses and water, and even compost and seeds.

Participants usually pay rental for plots or a membership fee. Most gardens have a coordinator (paid or volunteer) and rules that participants must follow.

The North Olympic Peninsula proudly sports many community gardens. (See a list of gardens on Page 5.)

Gardens vary in size and philosophy. Some are for any community member willing to pay the fee and follow garden rules; some are limited to individuals residing in the local area.

The Master Gardener Programs from both Clallam and Jefferson County support community gardening in theory and practice.

For example in 2013, Clallam County Master Gardeners led monthly educational walks at the Fifth

Community gardens provide educational opportunities. Starting May 9, Clallam County Master Gardeners will lead “Lunch in the Garden” at the Fifth Street Community Garden in Port Angeles on the second Friday of each month at noon. Master Gardeners will talk about what is or should be happening in local vegetable gardens. Events are free and open to the public.

IT’S TIME TO ENROLL IN SUMMER CAMPS story by BRENDA HANRAHAN, PENINSULA DAILY NEWS

Summer camps and programs on the North Olympic Peninsula offer children a chance to make friends outside their usual social circles, connect with positive role models and learn skills not offered in classrooms.

Families have lots of options for camps, from weeklong overnight camps to daytime speciality programs.

Below is a sampling of some of the local programs offered this summer.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula offers a summer filled with fun activities and engaging programs for members.

Weekly morning camp sessions begin June 23 at the Carroll C. Kendall Unit, 400 W. Fir St. in Sequim, and June 16 at the Mount Angeles Unit, 2620 S. Francis St. in Port Angeles.

Camps run from 7:45 a.m. to noon each weekday. Cost for participation is $15 per day per child or $65 for the week with advanced registration. Participants must be Boys & Girls Club members. The annual membership fee is $30 per child.

Each week, the morning camp’s crafts and activities are centered around a different theme including “Into the Wild,” “Crazy Science, Goin’ Green” and others.

Participants will be out exploring the North Olympic Peninsula’s “big backyard” with field trips focused on Olympic National Park and other nearby outdoor gems.

Each participant receives a morning and afternoon snack as part of the program.

Doors open to general membership at noon and kids are provide a free lunch.

As a distribution site for a community-wide summer feeding program, all children ages 1 to 18, regardless of membership, are welcome for lunch.

Both clubhouses will host a packed schedule with activities promoting good character and citizenship, healthy lifestyles and academic success. Both sites will offer daily academic-based programming centered on reading, math and science.

Club leaders will implement Summer Brain Gain — a fun, interactive learning program designed for use in Clubs by Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

JEFFERSON COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION

Jefferson County Parks & Recreation offers day camps for all ages and interests.

Five sessions of REC Summer Day Camps offer kids a nonstop schedule of games, art, cooking and outings.

• Recreation Summer Day Camp is offered July 28-Aug. 1, at the Recreation Center in Port Townsend. Activities include hiking, environmental art projects, beach walks, soccer, group games, use of TumblTrak equipment, sightseeing field trips and much more.

• Art Camp 1 is held June 23-27, at the Recreation Center in Port Townsend.

This camp is full of dynamic art projects using multimedia methods. Games, outings to local parks and beaches are included.

• Art Camp 2 is offered July 21-25, at the Recreation Center in Port Townsend.

This camp allows emerging artists to practice and refine their skills. Visits from local artists and gallery walks are only part of the fun.

• Kid Fit Camp is held July 21-July 25, at the Recreation Center in Port Townsend. Children will play, cook and learn about healthy lifestyles and basic fitness concepts. Outings to Memorial Field and Chetzemoka Park are planned.

All the REC Summer Day Camps run weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Suggested participant ages are from 6 to 10 years old (or kindergarten through fifth grade).

Weekly rates start at $200. Daily rates are $50 per person. Siblings receive a $5 discount.

Camp fees include a T-shirt, snack, all materials, bus fees and entrance fees. Campers need to bring their own lunches.

Camps have a minimum of 8 campers with numbers capped at 20 participants.

Scholarships are available. Call the Rec Center at 360-385-2221 for an application.

Kinder Camps are available for preschool-age children. The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 14-18. Suggested age is 4-5 years old.

Cost is $80 per child. There is a $5 discount per additional camper.

Daily schedule includes sport fundamentals, nature walks, fun fitness, art activities and outdoor play.

Snacks are provided, but campers are asked to bring a lunch.

Another summer camp opportunity is the department’s Junior Counselor-in-Training Program, which is designed for campers between the ages of 11 to 14 who are looking for an opportunity to practice their leadership skills.

New this year is a Girls Leadership Camp for girls entering seventh or eighth grades, held July 19-26, at Camp David Jr. During this residential camp, middle school girls develop to their fullest potential through dynamic and interactive leadership workshops, service projects and wellness activities.

“Each girl finds her voice, explores who she is and is exposed to the wonders of the outdoors,” said Jennifer Veneklasen, Clallam County YMCA’s director of marketing and engagement.

“From hiking to dancing, and drama to yoga, girls move their bodies and stretch past what they thought possible.

“They develop leadership skills and plan service projects with the support of fellow campers and staff.

“When girls finish this adventure, they know that the confidence, strength and friendships they’ve developed will help them meet any challenge that comes their way.”

Port Townsend Marine Science Center’s Junior Explorers Day Camp is for children ages 5-7. Three sessions are available: an afternoon session (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) June 23-27 and morning and afternoon sessions (9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) Aug. 4-8.

Campers spend a week exploring and discovering marine and coastal life — animals, plants and secret spots. It’s all about fun, with activities in and around the Marine Science Center.

Participants in the Coastal Explorers Day Camp will spend the week examining the varied natural environments of beach, glacial bluff, forest, pond and meadow. They will learn how these places and the creatures living in them support life in the coastal ecosystem.

Marine Biology Day Camp is for children ages 9-13. It is held July 14-18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Campers will spend a week engaging in exciting classes, labs and field programs, including sifting through goopy sediment looking for brittle stars and pulling a seine net through eelgrass beds to learn where young fish hide. Cost is $250.

The new Seal Pups Day Camp is for children ages 3-4. It is held July 23, 25 and 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and the cost is $80.

Campers will explore and learn about the beach and sea creatures with activities to enhance the natural curiosity and vivid imagination of this age group.

A session for children ages 10-12 will be held July 7-10.

Middle school students (grades 7-9) can sign up for Junior Oceanographer Explorers/ROV. This summer camp gives students a chance to build a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) as part of a team. They will learn the background and science behind ocean exploration.

The camp will take place July 14-17.

A Junior Oceanographer Explorers/ROV 2 summer camp will be held July 28-31 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Prerequisite to participate in this camp includes previous completion of the Junior Oceanographer ROV 1 Camp (either this summer or a previous summer) or participation in the spring ROV Club.

Cost for all of the camps is $130 per participant, or $110 with a 2014 family membership. A second child in the same family or a second enrollment receives a $25 discount.

A discounted $100 rate is available for first-time family membership buyers.

A Young Junior Oceanographer camp will be held between 10 a.m. and noon July 21-24 for children from 5 to 7 years old.

Cost is $75 per participant, $55 with a 2014 family membership or $45 for firsttime family membership buyers.

Last October, Peninsula Families Today featured a story about construction beginning on a Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County home in Port Angeles. What a difference a few months makes.

This month, Alicia Hernandez holds her daughter Olivia in front of the family’s future home built by Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County volunteers. The family also includes Alicia’s children Juan, Josue and Vianey and Alicia’s parents, Buenaventura and Jorge Hernandez. Habitat officials expect to have the Hernandez home, located at 1001 E. Third St., completed in July. Habitat For Humanity is within $10,000 of its fundraising goals for the home. Are you looking for another way to connect with local parents and caregivers to discuss parenting tips and child development?

Consider joining Tune In, Show Up, a newly formed parenting program that encourages parents to select an educational video each month, send informal invitations to other parents via social media and then “show up” for a candid discussion about how each video’s messages impacts them and their kids.

The idea for Tune In, Show Up came from First Step Family Support Center Executive Director Nita Lynn.

“Nita Lynn from First Step shared that she had envisioned this as an ‘organic’ movement to getting people to talk about parenting and child development,” said Rachel Hardies, committee chair of the Parenting Education Task Force of Prevention Works.

“Currently, committee members are hosting discussions, but anyone can host a discussion. Our hope is that it gets groups of friends thinking and talking.”

Tune In, Show Up also gives parents an opportunity to build a support network with other parents.

“We started Tune In, Show Up in January and it has been well received,” Hardies said.

“Anyone can suggest a video or topic that is related to parenting and child development. We want to get as many parents as possible talking and sharing.”
