2 locals receive Tacoma Historical Society awards Posted online Weds., April 16 By Todd Matthews, Editor The Tacoma Historical Society has announced the recipients of this year's Murray Morgan Award and Alan C. Liddle Award. The organization's Murray Morgan Award was presented to Dr. Jerry V. Ramsey for his work as a historic re-enactor, presenter, and author. Ramsey, who graduated from the University of Puget Sound and earned a Ph.D. from Columbia Pacific University, retired after working for 28 years at Tacoma Public Schools. He most recently wrote A Fur Trade Era Anthology. Robert L. Schuler received the organization's Alan C. Liddle Award for his work as the former curator of Tacoma Public Library's Richards Studio Photography Collection. Although he recently retired from the library, Schuler, a graduate of Illinois State University and of the library school of Rosary College, Oak Park, Ill., continues to assist the library's Northwest Room on a volunteer basis. The awards were presented Monday during the Tacoma Historical Society's 24th annual meeting at the University of Puget Sound. The Murray Morgan Award recognizes individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to efforts to preserve and communicate local history. Past recipients of this award include Murray Morgan (1992); Winnifred L. Olsen (1993); Caroline Kellogg (1994); Ottilie Markholt (1995); Dr. Ronald E. Magden (1996); Gary Fuller Reese (1997); Cecelia Svinth Carpenter (1998); Robert Tschida (1999); Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society (2000); Brian G. Kamens (2001); Caroline Denyer Gallacci and Ron Karabaich (2002); Charlotte Medlock (2003); Jim Fredrickson (2004); Dorothy "Dode" Trip (2005); Marie Hayden (2006); Ralph Decker (2007); Karla Wakefield Stover (2008); Roger Cushman Edwards (2009); Paul R. Michaels (2010); Deb Freedman (2011); Thomas R. Stenger (2012); and Chuck Fowler (2013). The Alan C. Liddle Award recognizes individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the preservation of Tacoma's historic structures. Past recipients of this award include Alan C. Liddle and Patricia Sias (2008); Robert W. Evans (2009); Linda Bowman and Kathryn VanWagenen (2010); L.T. Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber selects CitizenSoldier Award recipient Posted online Tues., April 15 Photo Courtesy Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber announced Tuesday it has presented the 2014 Howard O. Scott Citizen-Airman of the Year Award to Master Sergeant Lance Nelson, a long-time loadmaster in the 729th Airlift Squadron, 446th Airlift Wing at Joint Base Lewis McChord-McChord Field, where he also serves as flight leader in the squadron and manages training for his flight. In addition to his military service, Master Sergeant Nelson volunteers at the West Pierce Fire and Rescue, where he teaches children in elementary schools fire prevention and life safety, and appears in the Fire Prevention Week assemblies at various schools, and participates in the Read Across America Program by visiting classrooms to read to children; Evergreen Elementary School, where he is the current Evergreen Elementary School PTA President and has been a member of the PTA for the last seven years; Bethel School District Long Range Facilities Planning Team, where he represents Evergreen Elementary School to develop a list of projects to present to the school board for the next bond issue; Bethel Recreation Association, where he has coached basketball, football, soccer, and

baseball; and Boy Scouts of America, where he is active in troop campouts, fundraising, and meeting management. Each year, the Citizen-Soldier Award, which is sponsored by America's Credit Union, memorializes Howard O. Scott, who grew up in Tacoma, served during World War II, and retired as a Tacoma banker who volunteered for a range of community service organizations.

Posted online Weds., April 16 Image Courtesy City of Tacoma Seven contractors have submitted bids for a public works project that involves the second phase of the Thea Foss Waterway Site 11 Esplanade. The project calls for the construction of a 300-foot-long concrete esplanade with lighting, railing, and park benches. The project will also install 17 new piles to support the new esplanade. The project budget is estimated at $1.6 million to $1.7 million. Two years ago, the Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board awarded a $500,000 grant to the City of Tacoma to help fund the project, which aims to create a 1.5-mile esplanade along Thea Foss Waterway. Last month, the City of Tacoma published a

legal notice in the Tacoma Daily Index advertising the project and requesting bid proposals. The bid deadline expired on Tues., April 15. The seven contractors who submitted bids include Nordland Construction NW (Nordland, Wash.) — $1,722,087; Bergerson Construction, Inc. (Astoria, Ore.) — $2,175,443; Rodarte Construction, Inc. (Auburn, Wash.) — $1,499.794.13; Mid Mountain Contractors, Inc. (Kirkland, Wash.) — $1,779,054.28; Orion Marine Group (Tacoma, Wash.) — $1,953,866; Tactical Constructors Corp. (Fife, Wash.) — $1,493,645; and Quigg Bros., Inc. (Aberdeen, Wash.) — $1,784,379.25.
