Wells Fargo conďŹ rms downtown Tacoma branch relocation
Posted online Tues., Jan. 28 Updated online Thurs., Jan. 30 Article By Todd Matthews, Editor Photo Courtesy Unico Properties Wells Fargo Bank officially announced Thursday it will relocate its downtown Tacoma branch to a new location this spring. On Tuesday, the Tacoma Daily Index was first to report a contractor was converting downtown street-level retail space once home to a cafe and wine bar into Wells Fargo Bank's new main branch. According to public records available from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Wells Fargo submitted an application to relocate its downtown Tacoma main branch from Wells Fargo Plaza, located at 1201 Pacific Avenue, to 1001 Pacific Avenue on Aug. 16, 2013. The request was approved on Sept. 4, 2013, following a two-week public comment period. Also on Tuesday, the Index contacted Wells Fargo spokesperson Lara Underhill and Unico Properties General Manager Russ Davis for more information. Both declined to comment further on the issue. Unico Properties owns and manages Wells Fargo Plaza. On Thursday morning, Underhill confirmed the move was under way and provided more information. The new 1,600-sqare-foot branch will open on Mon., March 24, and feature five teller windows, a street-level ATM, night drop, a historic mural highlighting the neighborhood's unique history, and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver-certified design. The bank will operate Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Ten employees will move from Wells Fargo Plaza to the new location. However, a variety of Wells Fargo business lines will continue to have offices at Wells Fargo Plaza, and there will continue to be an ATM located in the lobby for customer use. "Our new banking store will be larger to better suit the needs of our customers and will provide convenient street-level access to the downtown Tacoma community," said Kasey Essex, Wells Fargo Greater Puget Sound area president. "This new store location is an investment in our customers, team members, and the entire Tacoma community. We are excited to offer our customers a comfortable banking environment for them to conduct their business." The new location was once home to Bernardo's Aroma Cafe and Vinum Coffee and Wine Lounge.
