Tacoma seeks to ďŹ ll 10 positions on 4 citizen committees
Posted online Mon., Nov. 18 Tacoma City Council is looking to fill 10 positions on three volunteer commissions and one citizens panel. Tacoma residents are encouraged to apply to fill three positions on the Tacoma Area Commission on Disabilities. The Commission consists of 11 volunteers from Tacoma and Pierce County from a variety of backgrounds and areas of expertise. Tacoma seeks volunteers for Charter Review Committee
Posted online Mon., Nov. 18 The City of Tacoma announced Monday it is accepting applications from Tacoma residents interested in volunteering to serve on the 15-member Charter Review Committee. According to City of Tacoma staff, the existing city charter was adopted in 1953 and comprehensive reviews must be conducted at least once every 10 years. Tacoma voters approve or reject any recommended changes to the city's charter. The charter was last reviewed in 2004. At that time, the committee recommended 23 charter changes, councilmembers winnowed that list down to 11 proposed changes, and voters approved all the changes. The charter, Tacoma's governing document, is up for review next year. Last week, Tacoma City Council adopted a resolution to begin the process of creating the committee, which will be tasked with making recommendations for changes to the charter and submitting those recommendations to Tacoma City Council by Tues., May 6, 2014. The Mayor and Tacoma City Council will each recommend one individual for appointment. Tacoma City Council's Government Performance and Finance Committee will recommend an additional six members. The City of Tacoma is accepting applications until 5 p.m. on Weds., Dec. 4, 2013. The Human Services Commission conducts public hearings, accepts and reviews funding applications, rates project applications and makes human services funding recommendations to Tacoma City Council. The Commission also serves as a resource to Tacoma City Council and staff in the implementation of the City of Tacoma's Human Services Strategic Plan. Tacoma residents are encouraged to apply to fill two positions on the Citizen Review Panel, a seven-member advisory panel to Tacoma City Council with oversight of Tacoma Police Department policy. The appointments will fill a term expiring Dec. 31, 2014 and another term expiring on Dec. 31, 2016. Members of the Citizen Review Panel are recommended for Tacoma City Councy appointment by the Public Safety, Human Services and Education Committee. The Panel is responsible for conducting policy review, reviewing trends in complaint investigation and statistical reports, and engaging in community outreach. Qualified applicants will be screened by a criminal background check and each applicant must be a registered voter, have lived in Tacoma for at least two years immediately before applying, not hold any other elected public office, not currently serve as a member of the Tacoma Police Department or be an immediate family member of a department employee.
