Moving to a smaller space requires extensive planning and careful consideration of both your current home’s style and function. Most importantly, you must consider your current lifestyle and how you intend to live your daily life in the future.

he expression “long-term care” usually refers to 24-hour care given to people who can no longer look after themselves. But when it involves a loved one who only has a limited degree of autonomy due to aging, this expression becomes very personal indeed. Then the very difficult decision has to be taken to admit that our loved one needs long-term care.

As long as the person concerned still lives at home, the necessary steps regarding a request for placement in a long-term care home can be made by the person involved, by a family member or a friend. If the individual has already been admitted to a general care or specialized hospital, it is this establishment which will be responsible for taking the necessary steps.

Seniors wish to be respected and at the same time remain active during their retirement years, they wish to make

here do most seniors prefer to live? The vast majority of elderly people want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible, hopefully until the end of their lives. If you have an aging parent who wants to avoid moving into a retirement home, you can support the goal of independence by following a few of these tips. ▲ Help your parent organize important information. Install a notice board in a central location and use it to keep track of all appointments, telephone calls to be made, medications to take, and emergency contact numbers. ▲ A bad fall followed by hospitalization can radically change the life of a senior. Go through your parent’s home together and clear away any obstacles from hallways and stairs, replace any burnt bulbs, and install night lights in hallways.

▲ Many accidents occur in the bathroom, so install safety equipment such as grab bars near the toilet and bath, non-slip bathmats, and sufficient lighting. ▲ The early detection of illnesses can often make a difference in how independent a senior is in the long term. Be sure that your parent consults his or her doctor, optometrist, and other health professionals on a regular basis. Better still, go along on appointments to make sure that all care instructions are clear and that your parent can follow them. ▲ Improperly fitting clothes and shoes are dangerous. Baggy sleeves can catch fire at the stove and floppy slippers can cause a fall. Check your parent’s footwear. Are shoes properly soled with a good gripping material?

Throw away worn shoes and slippers and give away any clothes that are too loose-fitting.

he circumstances in which a person finally asks for daily and unconditional help from a family member or friend can vary a great deal. Seniors’ Month is a good time to learn how to deal with this responsibility.

When the time comes to consider having a caregiver in the home, either part time or full time, you should be aware that the motivation which pushes your children to accept this roll will greatly influence your relationship and your feelings towards them. So this eventuality must be discussed openly and honestly with them: do they really want to help? Is this desire motivated by love or a sense of duty? Are they ready to restrict their present way of life?

Moreover, if you decide to go and live with one of your children, rules governing your life together must not be left to chance. Both of you must have some private space adapted to personal needs. Despite this, a period of adjustment will be necessary: it is always a huge transition for seniors, who have always lived independently, to leave

their homes and move in with someone else. The adjustment can also prove to be very complex because of the reversal of the parent-child relationship which existed until then.

Urge your caregivers to think about themselves. You are the parent so insist that they pursue an activity just for them, such as dancing classes. And stipulate that they take regular vacations, even if alternative sources of care will be necessary.

Resorting to a caregiver who is close to you requires a great deal of mental and emotional preparation.

Stay in great shape long after 65!

D

o you dream of slowing down the effects of aging? If so, you’d better get moving. No matter how old you are it is always possible to maintain or improve your health by adding some sort of physical activity to your routine. Better balance and a higher degree of independence are among the many benefits that seniors gain from exercise. Physical activity also tends to reduce the risk of falls and injury and helps prevent heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, type-two diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Best of all, it just makes people feel better!

Start gradually but aim to do at least two and a half hours of moderate or intense physical activity every week. Any exercise that lasts longer than ten minutes counts. Biking and brisk walking are considered to be moderate activities if your heart rate increases and you are capable of talking but not singing while you

are moving. Intense physical exercise includes jogging and cross country skiing. During this kind of activity, you need to catch your breath after a few words because of an increased heart rate.

Don’t forget to strengthen your muscles and your bones with twice weekly sessions of an activity such as stretching, yoga, walking, weights, climbing stairs, and sit-ups or push-ups. These will invigorate your heart and mind.

Get in the habit of looking for opportunities to do some exercise, whether it means going to the park with your grandchildren, walking up the stairs instead of taking an escalator, walking to and from the grocery store instead of going by car, or getting off the bus a few stops from home. Even if you’re not used to it now, you’ll soon see that exercise can be a real source of enjoyment.

2. Get sufficient sleep: aim to sleep eight hours a day. Not getting enough sleep is harmful to the skin and can cause unhealthy weight gain and a grim outlook.

3. Use your memory: don’t forget that the brain is a muscle. Give it some exercise with word games, puzzles, and stimulating discussion and readings.

4. Stay active: it’s proven that exercising for 30 minutes a day improves health. Do it every day, if possible.

5. Fill up on antioxidants: colorful fruits and vegetables are full of these compounds that protect the body’s cells and help boost the immune system.

6. Reduce your sugar intake: sugars promote weight gain and accelerate the aging of the skin. There is also some evidence that they compromise the immune system.

Smoking reduces life expectancy by about four years We all age a little bit every day and like it or not, we can’t do anything about it. However, several lifestyle choices can help to slow down the effects of aging.

Here are ten examples: 1. Stop smoking: cigarettes reduce a smoker’s life expectancy by about four years, not to mention the aging effects on skin, hair, and teeth.

7. Increase your calcium intake: calcium is essential for healthy skin and bones.

8. Manage your stress: stress makes you look older, so aim for a balanced lifestyle through yoga, meditation, exercise, and rest.

9. Protect yourself from the sun: sun is the most important factor in aging skin and one of the main causes of skin cancer.

10. Drink a lot: good hydration is vital for the body’s organs and for healthy looking skin..

The first step is always the most difficult where physical activity is concerned. After that it’s pure enjoyment!

Ten tricks to keep in mind!

Be honest with yourself: when it comes time to exercise your brain, do you tend to give up quickly? It is very useful for people over 50 to be well informed regarding their memory and to fight slowly but surely against memory problems.

Here are a few tricks to keep in mind: 1. When you are reading, be attentive and concentrate on what you are reading.

2. To remember someone’s name, a telephone number or a personal identification number, help your memory with associations, repetitions and visualizations.

3. If you have a word on the tip of your tongue, relax and stop consciously searching for it; it will soon come to you.

4. Don’t purchase those medications which supposedly improve memory. There is no proof of their effectiveness.

5. You could however resort to certain supplements such as ginkgo biloba capsules, which can have some effect.

6. Reduce or eliminate sources of distraction such as background noises.

7. Create a classification system at home to store and easily retrieve your documents.

8. Make a list of the things you have to do every day and tick them off as you do them.
