he Northshore School District’s Secondary Academy for Success (SAS) in Bothell was named one of just four Green Ribbon Schools in Washington State out of 78 nationwide. And officials from the U.S. Department of Education wanted a closer look at the award winner.

The schools that won the Green Ribbon were selected for exercising a comprehensive approach to creating green environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and

ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education. The schools also prepare students with skills and sustainability concepts for green jobs.

The group toured seven Washington state schools to gain ideas for other schools nationwide.

Newest Little Library opens in Kenmore

A Bothell man was sentenced to four days in jail on Sept. 13 for first-degree theft and third-degree assault in connection with an incident last year that resulted in him being shot by Kirkland police and crashing his car after soliciting a prostitute.

King County Superior Court Judge Julie Spector also sentenced Joseph K. Rundlette, 26, to a year of community custody and ordered him to pay fines and restitution.

Rundlette, who pled guilty of the crimes on Sept. 3, answered an ad on “backpage.com” for an escort in the Kirkland area on Sept. 17, 2012. The woman [ more SHOT page 3 ]

Bothell annexation open house set for Oct. 24

The city of Bothell will hold an open house concerning the proposed annexation of nine designated north King County

areas to Bothell.

The meetings will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Northshore Junior High School Library at 12101 NE 160th St and Oct. 24 at Westhill Elementary School Gym, 19515

new library opened in Kenmore Sept. 21 - it stands less than six feet tall but everyone is welcome.

Kenmore City Councilman Allan Van Ness built the Little Free Library and Kenmore resident Ela Jungheim painted and decorated the structure, which stands in front of Marilyn White’s home in the McDonald Highland neighborhood. “[It’s] stocked with books and open for ‘business,’” said Van Ness.

The idea sprang from

former President of the Kenmore Library Advisory Board Ellen Stein. “[She] came to the April 2 meeting with a copy of her University of Wisconsin alumni magazine,” said White. “The cover story featured an article about an idea that seems to be taking hold around the world. We passed the article around and some enthusiastic discussion ensued.”

That idea makes libraries more accessible for community members on a smaller scale. The Little Free Library’s shelf space is only about two-and-a-half feet tall with two shelves,

holding a maximum of about 20 books. But the idea is more about discovering new things, creating community and promoting literacy.

White, who is known by neighbors as “Grandma Wheels” because she zips around her neighborhood in a power wheelchair, knew she would need an architect and carpenter to make the idea a reality.

Van Ness volunteered during the meeting to lend his skills to the project.

“He is a man of high energy,” said White. “I knew he was a politician but I was overwhelmed

The King County Council was the final partner to adopt the agreement, unanimously approving the ILA on Sept. 3.

Some of the main points to the agreement for residents are: • Property taxes would be lower in Bothell than in unincorporated King County, because the Bothell municipal tax rate of $1.54 per

$1,000 of assessed valuation replaces the combined county road tax and fire district tax rates of $3.25 per $1,000 assessed valuation. Even after factoring in the city’s utility taxes, the owner of a typical house assessed at $300,000 would save between $245 and $262 per year if annexed to Bothell.

• Addresses would stay the same. The vast majority of properties in the annexation areas have Bothell addresses,

but a small number have Kirkland or Woodinville addresses. These would not change with annexation.

If, following annexation, citizens in those areas were to ask to change to a Bothell address, the city would conduct public outreach to determine support for the idea, but it is not automatic.

The Whites and Van Ness hope that community members will give books and leave notes in them for the next person.

told Rundlette to meet her at the Totem Lake Motel 6, where he gave the woman $160. The woman told police that Rundlette began to act “strange” and was very aggressive, according to court documents.

Rundlette then attempted to take the money out of the woman’s purse when she grabbed the purse and began to fight back. At one point, Rundlette choked the

woman to regain control of the purse and run out of the room. The woman chased Rundlette and screamed for help, the documents continue.

Three Kirkland Police officers heard the screams and attempted to stop Rundlette, who got into his vehicle. When Rundlette tried to exit the parking lot at 40 to 60 miles per hour, a Kirkland officer stepped in front of the vehicle’s path.

The Federal Highway administration paid 80 percent of the cost, while Snohomish County picked up the rest. There is a tentative ribbon cutting set for 3 p.m. on Oct. 9.

The officer yelled at Rundlette to stop and pointed his gun at him. With the vehicle just 10 feet from his position, the officer fired a single shot and moved out of the way, hitting Rundlette in the shoulder. A patrol car chased him two blocks before Rundlette lost control of his vehicle and it rolled over.

Several Kirkland police officers responded to a bank robbery at the Finn Hill Key Bank on Sept.

24. It is the third time in two years they have done so.

Lt. Mike Murray with the Kirkland Police Department said a witness saw a white man dressed in blue overalls, a white shirt and a clown-like mask approach the bank when they called 911.

The suspect implied he had a black semi-automatic handgun before robbing the Key Bank, shortly after. He was taken to the hospital for surgery to remove the bullet and arrested, the documents continue.

Rundlette, who had no other criminal convictions, will have to pay $815 in fines plus restitution, which has not been determined.

He was also ordered to have no contact with the victim for 10 years and five years with the officer involved in the shooting.

Murray said a Kirkland police officer chased the suspect as he left the bank with a “bag of money” but the man hopped on a bike and got away.

Witnesses say they saw the suspect get into a silver car and officers are still searching for him.

Murray said detectives and the FBI will be pulling the bank’s video surveillance for clues.

At least nine Kirkland Police patrol cars and two King County Sheriff vehicles responded to the scene.

The bank was robbed twice during 2012.

The Swamp Creek Bridge, just west of Bothell in unincorporated Snohomish County, is a main thoroughfare that serves many families in the Northshore community. But the crossing has been shuttered since June 20 as crews worked to replace the 47-year-old structure. The new bridge opened Monday to the delight of neighbors and commuters.

“The project has gone very smoothly and we are very happy with the contractor’s work,” said communications specialist for Snohomish County Public Works Tina Hokanson.

“There are a lot of people in the community that use this bridge, including kids at Kenmore Junior High and many bicyclists.”

A construction crew dismantled the old timber and concrete two-lane bridge in June. The bridge had deteriorated to the point that it could only handle 16 tons safely, prior to being torn down.

“We had put a weight restriction on the bridge and reduced traffic to one lane for a time,” said Hokanson. “It had returned to two lanes before the project began.”

The new structure, which has a price tag of $3.7 million, is freestanding, unlike the old structure, which

Lost letters due to technological glitch

T

echnology has made our lives so much more convenient. From the Internet, to smartphones, to desktop computers and beyond, technology is all around us. Everyone loves technology - until it fails.

For journalism, it has been good and bad. For most issues, information that used to take days and even weeks to get a hold of is now just an email to the right person or a Google search away. Pounding away on a typewriter, erasing or whiting out words, have all been replaced by the clicking sounds of a keyboard. News tips are now just a Tweet away.

Receiving editorial page content has been made just as easy. Some people still believe in handwriting a letter to the editor, but most people find the editor’s email and send him or her their thoughts digitally.

The Bothell/Kenmore Reporter newspaper even has a tab on its website under the “Contact Us” tab at the top right corner of the web page. One click and a reader is given a digital form to express their thoughts to the community.

We take this function of the paper very seriously. It is the place where residents of Bothell and Kenmore can express their views on anything. It is your place to give feedback to the respective municipalities, the school district, the job we are doing or anything else that you would like to share with the community. It is a place for residents to directly connect with the community in which they live.

The letters to the editor section is always full during election season. From May through the middle of September, we thought it was odd what we only received a letter or two at most about this year’s election. After all, Kenmore had three seats involved in the primary and Bothell had one. Nonetheless, we received some. We also did not receive inquiries about the editorial section, until about two weeks ago.

One of our readers and a very engaged citizen, Bill Roetcisoender of Kenmore, called us to ask

why his letter had not been printed, again. We had received this same inquiry from Roetcisoender earlier this summer. We were not sure why we had not received Roetcisoender’s letter but had received letters from other readers. Back in July, we gave Roetcisoender an alternate email and received his letter. We checked the system in July and did an audit of our letters received via email and via USPS and everything checked out.

But in response to his latest call, we asked our IT Department to audit everything we received through our website. We found that submissions through the letter to the editor tab were blocked somehow from getting to our email inboxes.

We found that there were six letters we did not receive or print since June because of this issue. We want to sincerely apologize to those who took the time to write us and express their opinions in the pages of the paper.

We also want to apologize to readers who were

not exposed to those differing ideas and opinions.

We have made an extra effort this week to publish all of the aforesaid letters. We also posted those letters to our website, at www.bothell-reporter.com.

If anyone has written a letter to the Reporter and has not seen it posted, please let us know so we can rectify the issue.

We take our editorial section very seriously and know that a measure of trust, along with freedom of speech and honesty, goes along with all of our pages, including the editorial page.

We hope that this will not discourage citizens from expressing their views through our website and in the pages of the Reporter.

The issues with the website have been resolved and we look forward to hearing your views on all things Bothell and Kenmore. If you ever send a letter to the editor and do not see it on the website or in the Reporter pages within two issues please call us or email us directly. Thank you.

Take time to learn about the North Creek Forest As we witness the development that is taking place in our area, we are glad for the jobs and homes it creates.

Still, something is destroyed in each of us when a forest is cut down.

We can feel both sad and powerless. The good news is that community groups are doing something about it. Will you join one of them, Friends of North Creek Forest, to insure that our last great urban forest and its wildlife are protected?

North Creek Forest is a 64-acre stretch that lines the west side of Interstate 405, just north of the 195th exit, all the way to Canyon Park Junior High, about a mile. With more than half of it saved, and 29 acres remaining, we are getting close.

With a $500,000 grant that must be matched in order to be used, we are at a critical juncture. Can we match it before the grant expires or before it gets developed?

Herbig’s vision is wrong for Kenmore Kenmore Council candidate Nigel Herbig is wrong for Kenmore and does not belong on the city council.

We received his campaign mailer attacking Kenmore’s working waterfront, and by implication, the family wage jobs it produces. The waterfront actually manufactures things and is home to iconic Kenmore Air. Northshore School District needs more transparency Approximately 50 percent of students in the Northshore School District qualify for the free or reduced lunch program (2010 U.S. Census).

Study after study shows the impact that poverty and low income have on children’s development and education outcomes.

Despite the truth of those studies, the Northshore School Board voted 4-1 to approve a calendar that they have admitted will cause a hardship for many families in our school district. The only hope for these fami-

lies is if some other outside group steps in to fill the void and thus ease the hardships caused by the school board’s decision.

Tim Brittell, current president of the Northshore Education Association, wrote a letter to the editor of the Woodinville Weekly supporting the union’s decision to pressure the school board to approve a weekly early release schedule. He alluded to a study allegedly conducted by the Northshore School District Elementary Design Team 10 years ago. It was just one of numerous items they reviewed that year, such as curriculum adoption and changes to the elementary report card.

The school board rejected the team’s recommendations concerning early release for teacher planning time. Brittell claims that the decision to reject the recommendation of the 2003-2004 study was due to the “economic collapse,” which occurred several years later in the fall of 2008.

The Northshore Education Association continued to push for the early release time, until this year when they were able to control the majority of the school board.

What was quite clear from the purported timeline that Brittell offered was that at no time did the Northshore Education Association or the school district involve the parents and community members in their discussion of, or decision to implement, the early release schedule.

The decisions were made behind closed doors without the transparency that sev-

eral members of the current school board had previously made part of their campaign platforms.

The lack of transparency and collaboration with parents and community has caused outrage throughout the Northshore School District community. There is a marked lack of trust from parents, community members and even many teachers, toward the district and several members of its board of directors.

The damage that has been done - and during a bond and levy year no less - is grave. It was completely

avoidable. At any time during the process the district and the school board could have convened a task force consisting of educators, administrators, parents and community members to truly study the issue. In doing so, they would have provided the transparency that the community demands and our children deserve. That they chose not to do this is unacceptable.

Reject Patrick O’Brien for Kenmore City

On April 19, the BothellKenmore Reporter published Pat O’Brien’s letter to editor claiming how wrong and abusive the city of Kenmore was in demanding that he get certain building permits for his “grape arbor” that was later used to support solar panels.

He also refused to obtain

a permit for a retaining wall that was inadequately constructed and is now failing and a safety hazard.

Subsequently, Mr. O’Brien filed as a candidate for Kenmore City Council Position 4. He continued to refuse to obtain the required building permits and refused to abide by the normal rules of law.

Mr. Herbig is short on specifics, so it’s not clear if he wants the city to condemn the property and take it off our tax rolls, or just redevelop it into low-wage retail and restaurants, or maybe some high-end condos with “open space.”

Kenmore should be proud of its working waterfront.

We don’t need to try to become a Kirkland-lite or shadow-Edmonds. The city has challenges enough with Kenmore Village. Neither it, nor the voters, need the added challenges Mr. Herbig would bring to office.

Ricky Nelson is the only artist to have a No. 1 song, No. 1 movie and No. 1 TV show in the same week. Life Magazine coined the phrase “Teen Idol” after him. He is credited with pioneering the country rock sound.

But as the times changed, so did the music, and Ricky Nelson struggled to capture an audience.

atthew Nelson best describes his dad’s legendary music and acting career as a series of comebacks.

When criticized – even booed off the stage – undaunted Ricky Nelson would return to play again.

“What I learned from him, more than anything, is to never give up, and he never did,” Matthew Nelson said of his famous father, America’s first “Teen Idol” of the 1950s who eventually blossomed to became a Rockabilly and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician and singer-songwriter.

Globally recognized but not universally loved, Ricky Nelson played to his own beat, performing music that transcended genres, from rock to pop, folk to country.

Despite the critics, especially those who scrutinized the man late in his up-anddown career, Ricky Nelson persevered to become one of the most important rock artists and influential musicians of the last 50 years, producing more than 100 million lifetime record sales.

“He was one of the only guys who really reinvented himself and did something completely different,” Matthew Nelson said by phone from Nashville, Tenn. “A lot of people in America were writing him off as a made-for-TV pretty boy ... only to (became) a vital and relevant artist. ... He got a chance to find himself but had to do it very publicly because he was always so famous.”

The two-hour celebration of the late artist’s career begins at 7:30 p.m. in Bothell at the Northshore Performing Arts Center on Oct. 11.

For many fans, Ricky Nelson was cool then – on TV, stage and screen – and he remains cool today.

That became evident when Ricky Nelson was booed off the stage at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, seemingly because he was playing his newer, country-tinged music instead of the 1950s-era rock that had made him so successful earlier in his career.

In response, a disgusted Ricky Nelson came up with “Garden Party,” which became a 1972 hit, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard charts. Lyrically, Nelson shot back, realizing “you can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.”

It was yet another unforeseen comeback for Ricky Nelson, whom the music industry considered washed up at the time. “’Garden Party is relevant because it was him in particular,” Matthew Nelson said. “After a lifetime of being what everybody wanted him to be ... when everybody kind of made a judgement on him, he got to a place to where he finally said, ‘OK, I’ve just been booed off the stage

by 20,000 people because I don’t look like I did in the ‘50s, and I’m playing Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan songs and new stuff with long hair, and I think I need to say something about it.’”

Nelson’s comeback was short lived. He produced music and had minor roles on television shows, with moderate success.

He died in a plane crash on his way to perform a New Year’s Eve concert in 1985. He was 45.

His legacy includes 53 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and 19 other top-10 hits.

Now his sons play on, continuing his music, his legacy.

“He was our best friend,” Matthew Nelson said. “I always felt that he’s still on the road (performing). He just hasn’t come back yet.”

atric Times cites bullying as a major public health problem with devastating consequences. Today, when drama happens at school it passes seamlessly from the lunchroom to the chat room, and before long it seems everyone in a social circle knows about it. Kids can’t leave bullying behind at the playground anymore because it follows them home in social media, texting and/or phone apps.

According to the most recent Healthy Youth Survey given to 6, 8, 10 and 12 grade students, 24 percent of local students reported being bullied in the past 30 days. That’s a lot of kids being hurt and a lot of kids doing the bullying. Bullying tends to peak in middle school years, but can happen anytime, and it’s slightly more common among girls.

Victims, bullies and bystanders get hurt Victims of bullying are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, today and as adults.

Kids who are struggling with bullying may have changes in sleep and eating patterns, and a loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. Bullied kids also have more health complaints and lower academic achievement.

Researchers estimate that on any given day, 160,000 children miss school because they’re afraid of being bullied.

Those who are bullied also may retaliate, sometimes through violence.

In fact, a study of school shootings in the 1990s found that 80 percent of the shooters had a history of being bullied.

But it’s not just the victims of bullying who are being hurt. Studies published earlier this year in JAMA Psychiatry found that those who bully were more likely to abuse substances as a teen or adult, have anti-social behavior and be involved in criminal activity as an adult. Even bystanders can suffer with increased mental health problems.

One thing that made SAS standout for many of the officials was the unorthodox location of building in an industrial park.

“Who looks at an industrial park and thinks ‘school,’” said Plotkin. “It illustrates the critical role that good leadership plays.”

SAS Principal Donna Tyo explained that building the school in the Canyon Park industrial park meant not having to build from scratch.

“It is a fabulous building and the kids take great care of it,” said Tyo. The building is loaded with many high tech innovations for conserving energy and using renewable resources. One of the reasons is SAS’s partnership with McKinstry, a company that helps businesses and school districts become more sustainable through technology.

An example is a “dashboard” that is on many of the flat-screen monitors around the building that lets staff and students know how much energy is being used.

The guests also received a tour of “The Green Machine,” a mobile green teaching lab created by students. The converted cargo trailer is used by SAS students to go around to Northshore elementary and junior high schools to teach younger kids about renewable resources. It is equipped with various energy generation systems, such as a stationary bike and a solar charging station.

A beloved Bothell man died in a motorcycle accident early Saturday in Federal Way on I-5. William Albert Bissell, 42, was traveling northbound on his Harley Davidson in the HOV lane when he lost control and was ejected to the left shoulder of the road, according to the state patrol.

The motorcycle came to rest in the HOV lane.

Bissell died of his injuries.

The Bothell/Kenmore Reporter website’s post had many tributes and condolences for the family.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to all the friends and family, especially to my nieces and nephew,” posted Tim Romanelli. “First, their mother, my baby sister, and now to lose their father so suddenly.

my friend. You and my sister, Brandi, can finally be together forever ... miss you and love you both dearly.”

The man who called 911 to report the accident, Norm Birch, also posted a comment: “Tribute to the mystery rider on the new FLH Classic … I wish I could have known you; You and your bike were magnificent as you rode through the dark night.

I heard you coming and felt the roar of your pipes as you passed. I confess, it was with an uneasy feeling that I watched the spray coming off your tires. Was it the lights of oncoming traffic? Was it a road puddle from the heavy rain that caused you to go down? We, the living, will never know.

I called in your distress to 911 at 4:55 a.m. You joined the angels minutes later. Be at peace now.

To which Bissell’s wife replied: “Were you with him when you called in his accident, did my husband suffer or was he with the angels instantly?

I’m so lost at this moment and still waiting for his arrival home.”

More than 40 posts of condolences were posted to the online story at press time.

“I had been traveling with him earlier that morning and got off in the Lakewood/Ft. Lewis area so he was on his last leg of the trip home to Bothell,” said Mike Herrick. “Bill was my son-inlaw, my best friend … my ‘hi-way brother.’”

The Bothell Reporter attempted to contact the family of Bissell but received no reply.

The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. Sept. 28 on northbound I-5 just off South 320th Street, according to the Washington State Patrol. The cause of the accident is under investigation. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Former primary opponent Nadia Mustafa has endorsed Steve Booth for Bothell City Council in the upcoming general election. Mustafa earned 10 percent of the vote and finished third in the August primary.

“I am delighted to support Steve Booth,” Mustafa said. “I care deeply about Bothell and its future and I am confident Steve has the experience and commitment to do an excellent job for us on the city council.”

This year was the first time that Mustafa has run for council. Booth will face former Bothell City Council member Tris Samberg during the November general election. Booth had 47 percent of the vote during the primary, while Samberg collected 43 percent.

D’Angelo. The mailing included the fact that D’Angelo works for Northwest University, which is affiliated with the Assemblies of God church. I was curious as to what the requirements are to work at Northwest University. So I went to the school’s website and checked.

All employees must agree to the university’s statement of faith, community affirmation statement, statement of principles and to “refrain from any unscriptural conduct in their lives.”

They must agree that the spiritual objectives of the university must be reflected in the personal lives of its employees.

The press release issued by the city of Kenmore on Aug. 22 gives the history of the legal action to date.

The city’s Hearing Examiner and King County Superior Court Judge Catherine Shaffer, who heard the appeal, have both ruled in favor of the city on every issue. Mr. O’Brien is required to obtain permits for his solar panel support structure and his retaining wall.

Kenmore voters should be aware of Mr. O’Brien’s actions. Do Kenmore citizens want a council member who flagrantly disobeys city codes?

Do they want a council member who thinks he is above the law? I think not. I urge Kenmore voters to reject Patrick O’Brien in his bid for City Council Position 4 in the Nov. 5 general election.
