he Northshore School District’s Secondary Academy for Success (SAS) in Bothell was named one of just four Green Ribbon Schools in Washington State out of 78 nationwide. And officials from the U.S. Department of Education wanted a closer look at the award winner. Senior Policy Advisor

to the Under Secretary of Education Hal Plotkin and Director of the U.S. Department of Education for Green Ribbon Schools Andrea Falken, along with other state and national officials, toured SAS on Sept. 20 to see how the school is innovating in the area of renewable resources and energy. “It is great to see these kids getting career and tech education in green

pathways from motivated leadership,” said Falken. “These are all things that the President and Secretary [of Education] want to see. They are connecting to careers.” The schools that won the Green Ribbon were selected for exercising a comprehensive approach to creating green environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and

ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education. The schools also prepare students with skills and sustainability concepts for green jobs. The group toured seven Washington state schools to gain ideas for other schools nationwide. “These schools are a great example of using resources and resourcefulness,” said Plotkin. “They are not [ more SAS page 9 ]

Newest Little Library opens in Kenmore

A Bothell man was sentenced to four days in jail on Sept. 13 for first-degree theft and third-degree assault in connection with an incident last year that resulted in him being shot by Kirkland police and crashing his car after soliciting a prostitute. King County Superior Court Judge Julie Spector also sentenced Joseph K. Rundlette, 26, to a year of community custody and ordered him to pay fines and restitution. Rundlette, who pled guilty of the crimes on Sept. 3, answered an ad on “backpage.com” for an escort in the Kirkland area on Sept. 17, 2012. The woman [ more SHOT page 3 ]

The city of Bothell will hold an open house concerning the proposed annexation of nine designated north King County

areas to Bothell. The meetings will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Northshore Junior High School Library at 12101 NE 160th St and Oct. 24 at Westhill Elementary School Gym, 19515

Estates and North Bloomberg Hill and will pertain to about 6,000 residents. The purpose of this open house is to update interested citizens on the status of the proposed annexation. The Bothell City Council
