Falcon Sports Guide – Fall 2013

Welcome A

Falcons Fans!

thletes and the coaching staff are looking forward to the fall sports season! Coaches all return from last year’s squads to push their student-athletes to new levels of success this season. Football kicks off the season with a pair of non-conference games before entering Cascade Conference play, a season that promises to be thrilling after South Whidbey won on the road last season. Volleyball will look to break through the first round of the 1A playoffs and qualify for the state tournament on the shoulders of a senior-laden squad. Girls soccer is aiming to build its program with a core of underclassmen and hopes to finish with at least a .500 win percentage. Cross country will try to send its boys and girls teams to the

state championship meet after the girls qualified last season, ending a years-long absence. Boys tennis continues to grow with a surge in freshmen players this season. It looks to be a promising season, one that will be fast paced, and will demonstrate teams that never quit. The South Whidbey High School athletic department, students and coaches are fortunate for the tremendous local support it receives and for the South Whidbey Athletic Booster Club members, who are a great asset to the athletic department. Because of their commitment to the athletic program, 162 students participated in fall sports this year. The Falcons look forward to seeing you in the crowd at all of the activities this fall. Come out, show your spirit and cheer on your Falcons!

the ABC’s of sportsmanship Accept and abide by the decisions of officials. Be a good host to opponents and treat them as guests. Cooperate with the coach, players and cheerleaders to promote good sportsmanship. Do unto others as you would have do unto you. Encourage your players to play hard and fair. Follow the rules of the contest at all times. Good sportsmanship is the “Golden Rule” in action. Hold assemblies before a contest to encourage students’ proper conduct. Intervene to let others know that ethnic, disability or sexist jokes, racial or religious slurs, taunting, trash talk and intimidating behavior will NOT be tolerated. Judgment calls by officials are not subject to question or discussion. Know, understand, and appreciate the rules of the contest. Lose without excuses; win without boasting. Model language and behavior that is unbiased and inclusive of individuals regardless of ethnicity, race, religion, sex or disability. Never criticize players or coaches for the loss of a game. Opposing coaches, participants, cheerleaders and fans must be respected at all times. Provide opportunities to remind student and adult spectators to uphold standards of sportsmanship. Questioning an official’s call or making negative comments is unacceptable behavior. Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play. Shake hands with opponents prior to the contest and wish them good luck. Teach sportsmanship and demand players be good sports. Use cheerleaders, pep groups and other student leaders to develop sportsmanship programs. Victory celebrations and unscheduled game rallies should not be permitted at school. Work cooperatively with officials. eXercise self-control and be good example for players and fans. Yelling, booing or heckling an official’s decision is unacceptable. Zero in on sportsmanship – it’s priority NUMBER ONE.
