Pilot project aims to quickly remove Tacoma grafďŹ ti File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Tacoma City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at City Hall to discuss the City of Tacoma's Rapid-Response Graffiti Removal program. City of Tacoma staff will provide a presentation on the development of a pilot program that allows for removal of graffiti from private property within 72 hours along key corridors. The removal would be conducted by an external provider under contract with the City of Tacoma. The program would allow for removal of graffiti up to three times on a site in a 12-month period. According to City of Tacoma staff, last year the City of Tacoma's Community Based Services Resource Team selected graffiti as a topic for a team of representatives from the City of Tacoma, the Washington State Department of Transportation, and the Downtown Business Improvement Area to examine and recommend changes to better address the issue. The team determined graffiti is highly visible and has several negative impacts including lending to an unsafe feeling and blighted sense of the surrounding community, which leads to lower property values and does not encourage investment in the city. The team explored multiple options for improving the City of Tacoma's approach to graffiti, including installing cameras in various locations, changing penalty provisions in existing codes, establishing a volunteer network for graffiti abatement, and developing a rapid-response graffiti removal program. Currently, the City of Tacoma's nuisance code allows 18 days for removal of graffiti from private property, according to City of Tacoma staff. Also next week, Tacoma City Council will resume its discussion of the 2013 Legislative session. In July, City of Tacoma staff provided councilmembers

PLU: $12M performing arts center renovation complete Photo Courtesy Korsmo Construction Tacoma-based Korsmo Construction recently completed the final phase of the renovation of historic Eastvold Hall on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University to include the Karen Hille Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The $12 million, 46,000 square foot project included restoration of the building within its existing footprint, with expanded lobby and gallery spaces, elevator access to all floors, classrooms, music practice rooms and enhanced support and offices for the Department of Theatre. Extensive seismic and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access upgrades were also performed. The fully refurbished auditorium includes 680 new theater style seats with improved sightlines and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems. Douglas fir wall panels that are both decorative and functional provide acous-

tic qualities that add to the high quality of the performance space. The project, which was designed and constructed to achieve a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, utilized lumber milled from trees sourced on the Pacific Lutheran University campus. Korsmo Construction is a general building contracting company that has served the Pacific Northwest since 1948. Projects in Tacoma and Pierce County include the University of Washington Tacoma's William W Philip Assembly Hall, Russel T. Joy Building, and Tioga Library Building; Steilacoom High School; Pacific Lutheran University's Martin J. Neeb Center; and the Children's Museum of Tacoma.
