Kittens, just let out of their cages, eagerly scamper across the boardingroom-turned-living-room.

Birds flit across the TV screen as an orange kitten sits on a fur rug, entranced by the mock fireplace.

Assumably, it is a cat’s paradise.

The Whole Cat and Kaboodle is just that - a place that will cater to nearly every cat’s need, aside from serious medical care.

“We try to teach people to see the world from the perspective of the cat,” said owner Nancy Howard, who owns a nonprofit called Feral Care. “Sometimes I’ll even have people get down on the ground so they can see. Your cats eyes don’t do a lot of the work, it’s their ears and nose.”

The Whole Cat and Kaboodle offers boarding, grooming, nutrition, and behavioral services for cats in addition to selling interactive toys, such as her homegrown catnip heating pad, and raw and canned food.

Aromatherapy is also available for stressed cats during boarding.

The small business, nestled to the left of Terriyaki Madness in Houghton, opened last May and Howard said business has been good.

Man pleads guilty to having sex with teen prostitute

A Kirkland man pleaded guilty on Aug. 5 to assault in the second degree after being arrested for having sex with a 15-year-old prostitute last winter at his Kirkland condo.

And some of her Kirkland customers - children who want to play with the kittens and people from neighboring businesses have all been the “nicest customers in the world.”

Howard, who has worked with cats for 15 years, got the idea to

“I was thinking, what am I going to do with the rest of my life and how would I be happy?”

Howard said. “I figured, there’s really a need for something like this, for somebody to help bridge the gap.”

Howard said many pet owners will be surprised by how much a good grooming and a raw or canned food diet will improve their pet’s mood.

Cats eating only dry food are 10 percent more dehydrated than cats that eat canned food or canned and raw, she said.

“And that level of dehydration makes them feel like they have a hangover,” Howard said. “So when you find cats don’t want to be picked up or

pet or they have a short fuse, it’s often because they don’t feel well.”

Howard jokes most every one of her customers can relate to being hungover and empathize when they realize the horrible feeling is what some cats feel all the time.

However, she says the proteins in canned or raw food can certainly help rehydrate cats because those proteins haven’t been processed and adulterated like they have been with dry food.

“If you have a cat and your litter box smells like ammonia, then I can tell you’re feeding it a diet with grain in it,” Howard said. “Any canned food, even the worst canned food out there, is better than the best dry food.”

Back to school means it’s time to slow down

“Are you vegan or vegetarian?”

ur children returned to the classroom this week and while some parents may be cheering, it’s also a time of concern: More than one-fourth of child pedestrian fatalities occur between 3-7 p.m.

Those times are when schools are dismissing kids from the classroom or when they are headed home from school-related activities.

Now, more than ever, drivers need to be careful turning corners, backing out of driveways and driving through school zones.

Making things worse is that the days around here will get dark and rainy as fall and winter approach.

We expect that the police will be out in force this week, radar guns in hand, along streets that pass by schools.

And we trust that they will hand out tickets even to those who say, “oops, sorry” when they’re pulled over.

So let’s all take a deep breath, take our feet off the gas pedal and put kids first. Slow down.

Don’t make Kirkland into a mini-Bellevue Twenty-plus years after having moved to Hawaii as a teen, my husband considers himself a “local.” I was born and raised in paradise. As adults, careers took us to live in Chicago twice for six years total and Tokyo, Japan for five.

When deciding to retire, our worry was in finding a location with the small-town, family feel of Hawaii, combined with the safety and orderliness of Japan and the multitude of activities of Chicago. If one wonders if such a place exists and can deliver all of the above, look no further than Kirkland.

The Aug. 30 Kirkland Reporter was the bearer of the sad changes slated to take place in our unique and wonderful community. Do we really need another five-story mixed-use apartment complex (324 Central Way)? Or a Kirkland Aqua/Potala Village (Lake Washington Boulevard)?

Claudio Guincher with Continental Properties LLC is quoted as saying that he and his wife have spent a lot of time here in the summer and “it’s a great place to be.”May I suggest that you leave Kirkland be, Mr. Guincher, so that you and your wife, Kirkland residents and guests can continue to enjoy all of the beauty that the city has to offer?

To the developers who wish to alter the face of Kirkland and make it into a mini-Bellevue, do your damage elsewhere. Not all change is good, especially when it detracts from the lifestyle of a community’s residents. Reporter looks like a joke I am not typically a letter writer, but I just can’t sit by and watch this anymore without saying something. This morning, Aug. 28, on the local headlines for NBCNews.com, they featured a headline from the Kirkland Reporter that read: “Man yielding knife in downtown Kirkland arrested for disorderly conduct.”

I’m wondering what is the criteria for being able to write for your paper? Does your staff

know the difference between “yielding” and “wielding”? Oh, sure, they sound the same, but have rather distinctly different meanings. “Yielding” means to “give up” and “wielding” means to “hold or brandish a weapon.” According to your badly written headline, the man did nothing wrong.

Further, in the actual police blotter itself, we find this: “Disorderly conduct: 3:52 p.m., 100 block of Central Way. A 20-year-old man was taken into custody after he was seen yelling and waving a knife without a shirt on in downtown Kirkland.

Police located the man trying to enter a business and detained him for being in possession of a small knife. He was cited for unlawful carrying and handling of weapons in addition to disorderly conduct.”

So, I am led to believe that the knife had no shirt on. Does your editorial staff understand what a dangling participle is? (No, I am not an English teacher, but I did pay attention to English class every now and then.)

Does anyone at your paper ever edit or check their stories for accuracy? Do they know how? I realize that your paper is inexpensive for me as a Kirkland resident, but with newspapers going “out of style/going out of business,” it seems like this would be a time to raise your game just a little and report things not just with good grammar, but with accuracy as well. You made it to national attention this morning, and you look like a joke. Come on guys - get it together.

Students raise muscular dystrophy awareness for school project

E

ver since she can remember, Ellie Ungar’s uncle has had a hard time walking.

As she’s grown up, she has watched him slowly decline throughout the years. Now he is in a wheelchair and also has little range of motion in his arms.

He was born with a form of muscular dystrophy called facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy or more commonly known as FSH or FSHMD. FSH is the most common form of muscular dystrophy and primarily affects the muscles in the face, shoulders, chest and back. Ungar has been volunteering at a Kirkland FSH organization called Friends of FSH Research for the past three years but is now using her experience to go towards her school project.

She, Tiffany Lo and two other students are juniors at Interlake High School.

As a requirement, every student must complete the Creativity, Action and Service project. The main goal “is to make the

student grow through participating in community actions such as the FSHMD auction” Lo said.

The project is also “a really great way to incorporate objectives from my IB program with something that I really care about a lot and hopefully positively impact my family in that way,” Ungar said.

Part of the project’s requirements is that each student must complete 150 hours of work solely dedicated to their project.

Friends of FSH Research founder Terry Collela said she thinks it’s a “great idea” that Ungar is helping her organization for her school project. Collela started this organization after a close family member was diagnosed with the debilitating, underfunded and under-researched disease.

The main goal of the organization is to help fund research for the rare form of muscular dystrophy.

The organization’s first auction was in January of 2005 and then Collela put out a call for research projects in the local scientific community.

“Prior to that, there had never been a FSH-focus

research project ever conducted in this area,” said Collela. “Since that time, we have developed a group here at University of Washington, Fred Hutch and at Children’s who are focused on FSH. Our group of researchers have made huge steps and furthered the knowledge of FSH. We still don’t have a treatment, but we’re a whole lot closer to knowing where a treatment has to be directed to preserve and protect muscle cells, because of the group here. We’ve made a huge impact, we’ve made over $2 million from our home organization.”

Since 2010, significant strides have been made towards finding a cause for the disease. Collela explains what researchers are looking at that could provide a clue.

At the end of people’s number four chromosome, there’s a hairpin of sorts that turns and some of those turns for people with FSH are missing, said Collela. With that, the section opens up and a protein called Dux 4 forms. When this protein forms at the end of the chromosome, the protein

kills muscle cells, she said.

In order to develop a cure for people with FSH, the end of the chromosome needs to be closed off and block the Dux 4 protein from entering.

Unfortunately, Collela said, “It’s not as clear as you think because now you have the same person with FSH, they’ve had this Dux 4 all in their body, why does it only affect some muscles in their body, but not others? So, we’ve got a lead on it and if we could get rid of Dux 4 I think we would have it but we still have a few other little questions.

But, at least we’ve identified this one culprit and I think if we cure that culprit that we’ll have the majority of the condition taken care of; but there are a few little quirks that we haven’t quite worked out yet.”

The 10th anniversary auction for Friends of FSH Research will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 at the Bellevue Hyatt.

Ungar and her team’s main goal for their project is to raise community awareness about FSH and to generate more funds at this year’s auction than ever before. Beyond their goal for the organization, Ungar hopes “that what we’re doing and the opportunity afforded by this program can really inspire other people to see

community service less as a requirement and more as an opportunity. I think it’s really important that you find something that you’re passionate about and that you feel will make an impact in your life and in other people’s lives. The fact that we’re getting school credit for this is nice, but the real payoff is to see your work help people.”

Kirkland resident places 5th in Ironman Patty Bredice of Kirkland (Finn Hill) placed 5th in her age division in the Canada Ironman on Aug. 25 in Whistler, British Columbia with a time of 10 hours, 53 minutes and 49 seconds.

Between Aug. 23-29, the Kirkland Police Department reported 347 traffic violations (12 DUIs), 10 animal calls, 34 alarm calls, 35 noise complaints, three juvenile crimes, 10 calls of disturbance, 11 thefts, 15 car prowls, eight car thefts, 28 traffic accidents, 27 calls of civil disturbance, six reported burglaries, 12 domestic violence calls, 14 calls for harassment, three reports of illegal drugs, two alleged assaults, three acts of fraud, 13 malicious mischief reports, one rape and three suicides. Aug. 29 Warrant: 9:04 p.m., 200 block of Parkplace Center. A 21-year-old Redmond man was arrested on a felony warrant for burglary and narcotics violations after police found him passed out in front of Starbucks holding a melted quart of chocolate chunk ice cream and two gallons of milk.

Police also found a small amount of heroin that the man claims race car driver Caleb Armstrong allegedly “gave him as a good gesture.” A baggie of presumed black heroin, two folding knives, a scale, a silver spoon and a glass pipe were taken as evidence.

Through a search warrant, police discovered Lind was with a 20-year-old woman who has a history of prostitution arrests with ads on Backpage.com.

“He stated that all he does is pick up prostitutes and has consensual sex,” probable cause documents state. “He stated that every

girl he sees is an adult and always checks their ID cards to confirm their age. He then stated that his life is over, that he has terrible luck.”

But Lind clearly wasn’t thorough enough in checking prostitutes’ ages because about 10 days before he was arrested, a 15-year-old girl in the Denny Juvenile Detention Center in Everett came forward.

Deemed “Ruby Red” by her female pimp, the girl told police she had ads on Backpage. com and had been prostituting from January to February, mostly in the Seatac area.

However, there was one place in Kirkland she had been several times.

“The victim stated that she had performed sex acts on suspect Jordan probably four of the five times she met him and the suspect paid her money ranging from $100-$200 each visit,” court documents state.

The girl told police she told Lind the first time they met that she was 15-years-old but that he told her, “That’s OK, I like them young.” Lind is 33 years older than the girl.

Lind has several prior felony convictions, including unlawful imprisonment, attempting to elude a police vehicle and possession of stolen property.

Kiwanis Club of Kirkland meeting place moves to Hector’s, gets new president It has been a time of change for the Kiwanis Club of Kirkland. The club has been meeting at The Crab Cracker (a Kirkland landmark) every Wednesday at noon for the past 13 years.

But on Aug. 7 all that changed when the club moved to its new location – Hector’s in downtown Kirkland.

This is the 5th meeting place the club has had since it was formed in 1947. The Crab Cracker staff will be missed and the Kiwanis Club of Kirkland would like to say “thank you” for 13 great years.

While the club is adjusting to their new digs, Jay Henwood, acting president, will be relinquishing his title to Ralph Loveland on Sept. 6. Each presidential term is for one year beginning in September.

The “changing of the guard” takes place at an Installation Banquet which is the largest Kirkland Kiwanis social event of the year and is great fun for Kiwanians and their spouses.

“I am always amazed at what the people of the Kirkland Kiwanis Club accomplish,” said Henwood. “Everything we do includes having fun! With a 65-year tradition and a diverse group of great people, it is easy to directly help the children of our community, which is our main goal. Being in Kiwanis is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I am honored to be associated with this great group of people.”

Moving forward into a new term, Loveland says he is ready to step up to the plate. He plans to build on the promising new programs

introduced under Henwood’s presidency, as well as finding other ways to help children and young people in our community.

“This year the Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation introduced a new vocational scholarship program for young men and women who plan to study automotive technology at the Lake Washington Institute of Technology,” said Loveland. “We also sponsored an innovative new program introduced by the YMCA Youth Institute Program and the Kirkland Teen Union Center (KTUB) to provide indepth training for young people who want to pursue careers in digital creative arts. Both of these programs are beneficial to the young people and the community. I look forward to the KCK being part of more programs like these in the upcoming year.”

alance is key in all aspects of life. In football it is essential to winning.

Juanita High School head football coach Shaun Tarantola is convinced the Rebels have the most balance he has seen in his tenure.

“In 2010 our strength was among our linebackers and linemen,” Tarantola said about what he considers his best team since coaching the Rebels. “This year we have balance throughout the team.”

Balance is most key on offense. Being able to run and pass the ball keeps opposing defenses on their toes. The Rebels not only have balance between the run and pass, they also have talent.

“Offensively we will be able to do anything the defense gives us,” Tarantola said. “The skill guys are young but they are super talented. Our receivers, running backs and quarterbacks are better than we have seen [as a group] in a long time.”

“He knows how to run the offense and all of our wide receivers know how to get open to make big plays,” said Milburn. “We also have a lot of young talent being looked at by colleges.”

Colleges are already scouting freshman running back Salvon Ahmed and ESPN has ranked Thomas Toki in the top 40 nationally for linemen. That youth will

give the Rebels another element of balance with strong depth.

“We are able to do a lot of rotating because of our depth, which will keep all of our guys fresh,” said Milburn.

That is a stark contrast to the recipe for the success of 2012 when the team had a bruising running game and a dynamic passer under center.

“We will be going into a lot of games with some young guys,” said starting junior running back Riley Simonson. “But one thing I have learned is that you can’t play scared.”

Supple has a lot of faith in his tailback, who has started four varsity games. He told Simonson that he wants his goal to be 1,600 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns.

“Last year we had a downhill runner,” said Supple. “But [Simonson] is a one-cut-andgo kind of kid.”

Supple will also rely on his three senior co-captains Shelley, Nick Jahnke and Kris Singstad.

“Varsity is really hard,” said senior starting quarterback Nick Young. “There are some big guys and you have to be able to trust in your teammates.”

Young also has some experience as a starter but that came as a sophomore.

“We know what we did well last year,” said Young.

“We need to use it to improve. But we also know what we did bad last year and we need to use that for even better improvement.”

If the team is to improve it has three key games during which it will have to play well.

“We start the season in Tacoma to play Foss and that will be a good game,” said Supple. “But the game against Cedarcrest will give us a bet-

ter idea of who we are.”

The coach said that every team in KingCo is tough but the team must win against Sammamish.

“If we beat Sammamish we will be the 2A representative [in the playoffs],” said Supple.

The team will also host one of the best programs in the state during the past decade Bellevue High School.

“I am looking forward to it,” said Blake Owen. “It is a privilege and an opportunity to compete. It will just make us better no matter what the outcome.”

Kirkland Kiwanis honors students with scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Kirkland announced the recipients of its 2013 scholarship awards. Graduating seniors from Lake Washington, Juanita, Emerson high schools and the International Community School received scholarship grants.

Lisa Matsumoto of Lake Washington High School received the $1,000 Bill Petter Memorial Scholarship award. Five other Lake Washington graduates received $500 awards: Joseph Castro, Kristi Chan, Emma Imhof, Holly Sullivan and Sara Wilson.

Itzell Villarreal from Juanita High School received a $500 award, as did Callie Weber of the International Community School.

Two students from Emerson High School also received awards: Anayeli Molina and Shelby Whipple received scholarships to assist them in their future education.

“One of Kiwanis’s main missions is to support young people, and our scholarship awards are just one of the many youthoriented projects we are involved in,” said Jay Henwood, Kiwanis president.

“One of the reasons [parents] don’t want [their children] walking to school is they don’t want them crossing busy streets,” said Jeff Miles, district transportation manager. “My personal belief is that kids will do better [in school] with the fresh air and exercise from walking. I can’t imagine these [flashing beacons] will be anything but helpful for that.”

For the principal of Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School, the benefit is more immediate.

“Traffic that moves through our school zone is always on the forefront of our minds,” said Heidi Paul, principal of A.G. Bell Elementary.

“Dozens of students use the crossing on 116th.

t is six inches wide and two and-a-half inches tall. And with the help of some wellplaced white pavement markings and well-crafted sheet metal, it has the power to halt up to 96 percent of the two-ton machines that encounter it, according to an August 2010 study by the Federal Highway Administration.

Transportation engineers call it a Rapid Flashing Beacon or RFB for short. This month, Kirkland is adding six more of these safety devices near schools, thanks to the streets levy voters approved in the Nov. 6, 2012 election. Kirkland’s Capital Improvement Program is funding four more of these improvements.

Led by the City Council’s 2013 Crosswalk Initiative, flashing beacons will, by the end of this year, be alerting drivers of pedestrian presence at up to 14 crosswalks throughout the city.

This is the first phase of a City Council goal for the levy that will fund the construction — as well as the upgrade — of safety devices at up to 50 crosswalks throughout the city.

“Our city is already one of the most walkable in the nation,” said

Deputy Mayor Doreen Marchione, chair of the Council’s Public Works, Parks and Human Services Committee, “But our citizens voted to make our streets and sidewalks even safer when they passed the streets levy. The city promised quick results and installing these flashing beacons throughout the city delivers on that promise.”

To expedite progress toward accomplishing the crosswalk goal, Kirkland’s leaders leveraged in 2013 all of the $600,000 in levy funding they had dedicated to crosswalks in 2013 and 2014. Each of these devices costs $35,000 to $60,000 for equipment and installation — depending on its location and whether the surrounding tree canopy allows for solar power.

That is about the best bang for your pedestrian safety bucks that you’re going to get, said Bruce Friedman, transportation specialist for the Federal Highway Administration.

“They cost a lot less than the devices you have to put out on the roadway,” Friedman said. “Compared to full signalization, they are a very cost-effective way of getting pedestrians across the street safely.”

Marilyn (Van Cleve) Whitcomb, a resident of Gresham, Oregon, died on August 27, 2013 in Gresham. She was 86 years of age.

Marilyn was born on January 4, 1927 in Seattle, Washington and was the daughter of Howard and Georgia (Wilcox) Van Cleve.

She grew up in Kirkland, WA and graduated from Kirkland High School in 1945. She later attended the University of Washington and worked in the dispatch office at Puget Sound Power and Light.

On October 17, 1954, Marilyn married Ernest Whitcomb in Kirkland. They moved to Los Angeles for a few years and returned to Washington, residing in Kirkland. In 1998, they moved to Newport, Oregon and in 2003 to Gresham where Marilyn resided until her death.

Family was very important to Marilyn. She was devoted to her children as they were growing up. They went on camping trips and road trips and if they were good, they would stop for ice cream or fudge. She taught them important life lessons that molded them into the people they are today. She was also a devoted wife. Ernest and Marilyn were always together; soul mates at heart.

They traveled the country, with their travel trailer, visiting family and making memories. They also enjoyed trips to the Oregon Coast and skiing at Mt. Bachelor. Marilyn was a very talented woman. She enjoyed sewing and cross stitch and made outfits for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed her flower garden.

She was a special wife, mom, grandma, sister and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ernest of Gresham, daughter, Georganne Moon of Gresham, son, Howard of Gresham, sisters, Elizabeth Skadan of Kenmore, WA and Judith Van Cleve of Tacoma,WA along with two grandchildren, Krystal Dickinson and Janelle Moon both of Gresham. Her brother,William Van Cleve Jr. preceded her in death.

A Celebration of Marilyn’s life was held September 5, 2013 at the Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham. Private Interment took place at the Willamette National Cemetery. The South Kirkland Park and Ride garage opens

Ninety-two percent of district students taking the ACT met the college readiness benchmark score in English, compared to 75 percent statewide and 64 percent nationwide. In math, 78 percent of district students met the readiness benchmark, while at the state level it was 60 percent and 44 percent nationally.

For reading, 75 percent of district students met the benchmark compared to 58 percent statewide and 44 percent nationally. In science, 68 percent of Lake Washington School District students met the readiness benchmark while 49 percent statewide and 36 percent nationally met that standard.

The number of students in the district who took the ACT test fell from 485 in 2011 to 450 in 2012. That is still higher than the 403 students who took the test in 2009.

The district’s average composite score remained steady from 2012 to 2013 at 25.5, a number exceeded only by the 2011 average score of 25.6. Both state and national composite scores fell in 2013.

e all want our children to succeed, but sometimes as parents we can be overly involved in our children’s lives.

We don’t want them to get hurt or experience pain so we over-parent, also known as helicopter parenting.

“The result is that kids get out into the real world, and they don’t know what to do or can’t handle it,” says Caron McCune, a counselor with Youth Eastside Services.

In fact, research recently released by University of Arizona Professor Chris Segrin found that children raised by helicopter parents tend to have fewer coping skills.

Helicopter parenting, or over-parenting isn’t about being concerned and active in your child’s life — that is normal and healthy. It becomes problematic when parents begin doing things for children that they should be doing for themselves or when parents become overprotective and don’t allow their children to grow and experience normal activities.

Oftentimes, over-parenting stems from a desire to calm parental anxieties — it’s no wonder, with news of school shootings, child abductions and other horrible events. McCune points out that oftentimes overprotectiveness can rub off on the child, who in turn becomes anxious.

The Herald is a mid-size daily paper in the Puget Sound located just north of Seattle. We primarily cover Snohomish and Island Counties with a strong focus on community journalism. In last year’s NPPA BOP Editing contest, The Herald placed third in the Best Use of Photography awards for newspapers under 75,000 in circulation. Interns shoot the full range of assignments that staffers do, so those with previous internship and newspaper experience will be at an advantage. We are looking for a team player that will fit in with our staff of four photographers. The candidate should be socially adept and open to critiques.

Multimedia and/or video experience is a plus; a passion for photography is required. We will provide Canon digital camera bodies, lenses, a MacBook Pro and access to pool photography and video equipment. Interns are expected to provide their own dependable vehicle.

The position is Full-Time and the hourly rate of pay is $11 plus mileage.
