Emmy's Vege House: Truly the best of Bainbridge Island Emmy Tran has escaped Vietnam, traveled the world, and become an island favorite.

mmy Tran, along with her husband Jim, works each day in a humble Winslow Way window.

They have spent the last 15 years garnering local fans by dishing out simple yet rather tasty to-go orders.

While islanders have come to know the all vegetarian window well, it is often missed by Winslow Way tourists.

Her fondness for her customers motivates her to continue each day in the small, hot kitchen behind the window.

"But customers come and I forget how hot I am," she said.

That's OK with Tran, however. She feels lucky to be a hometown hotspot.

Tran, at 62, said her children have asked her to slow down a bit, even retire.

On the heels of her 2012 honor as the Best of Bainbridge’s best vegetar-

"I think OK, but people, they like us and they like our food," Tran said.

"I love working on the island," Tran said. "If I go somewhere, I miss the island so much."

In fact, not even an all expenses paid trip to Paris, provided by her children this year, could sway her attention from Bainbridge.

"I missed the island," she said.

"I love the people," she added. "I feel so lucky people come to us. There are a lot of people selling food around (Winslow Way), but customers come to us and I feel lucky."

Her lucky sentiment stretches beyond her island support. Tran, along with her husband and four children, were among the wave of boat people who fled their country in the late '70s following the Vietnam War. She grew up in a small South Vietnam village, Quang Tri. Each day Emmy helped her mother care for her three younger siblings by pitching in with cooking and going to the market.

With no refrigerator, trips to the market and food preparation were daily occurrences. Her father, a local doctor and teacher, provided education at home.

Her father was eventually taken by the northern army in the years leading up to her exit from the country.

"The communists put him in a jail, because he was a teacher, for two and a half years," Tran said.

He was kept in a small cell with little movement, so when he returned to his family, Tran's father was in poor health. He passed away five months after returning home.

When North Vietnam forces moved south, the Trans decided it was time to leave. Jim had previously worked with American military forces, so they set their sights on the United States, via a few waypoints starting with Hong Kong.

"Everybody wanted to leave and a lot of people died on the ocean," Tran said. "My husband's family had a sail-

boat. It took 18 days (to get to Hong Kong)."

From there, they traveled to the Philippines where she picked up a little English. By 1983, the Trans found a sponsor in Poulsbo and landed in America.

Tran said her family learned to appreciate the opportunities in their new country. Today, her four children have grown to become an electrical engineer, a dentist, an optometrist and a computer scientist.

It was in America Tran began her journey to become a vegetarian and business owner. After witnessing a cow being slaughtered, she began considering the dietary move. She also recalled her father becoming a vegetarian after becoming sick.

So 15 years ago when she purchased a hot dog stand on the corner of Winslow Way and Madison Avenue, she naturally converted the window to an all vegetarian menu.

Tran, however, doesn't use her window to push her choices on others. Rather, she just keeps dishing up what people keep coming for; vegetarian fare, many with convincingly delicious meat substitutions.

"I don't want to push people that way," Tran said. "But vegetarian and vegan is healthy, very healthy."

Today, Tran can still be found working her window, Jim at her side. She serves each meal with a smile and a "thank you," and working hard at being the best of Bainbridge.

"He was sick, and then he quit anything with meat and got better," Tran said.

Her family's spiritual teacher, Supreme Master Ching Hai, is also a vegetarian.
