Tacoma's Chuckals OfďŹ ce Products charity golf tourney raises $20K Posted online Mon., Aug. 19 Photo Courtesy Chuckals Office Products Downtown Tacoma's Chuckals Office Products hosted its sixth annual charity golf tournament earlier this month at the American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Pierce County. The event, which included 60 golfers (up from 32 golfers last year) raised almost $20,000 (double the donations from last year) for City of Hope Cancer Research Hospital and Cancer Treatment Center and the Friends of American Lake Veterans Golf Course, an organization dedicated to providing disabled veterans with rehabilitation opportunities by supporting operations at the American Lake Veterans Golf Course. The tournament also included a special fundraising event meet-and-greet, providing volunteers and golfers the opportunity to speak with sponsors about what the golf course has done for their recovery. The tournament was supported by more than two-dozen office products companies, vendors, and customers, including Hewlett-Packard, S.P. Richards Co., and Avery Dennison. "As a locally owned and operated business, Chuckals is proud to support organizations like the Friends of American Lake Veterans Golf Course, who do such outstanding work in support of the servicemen and women who have given so much on our behalf," said Chuckals Office Products President Al Lynden. "We very much appreciate the support of our customers, business partners, and friends who helped make this year's tournament so successful. Planning is already underway for an even bigger event next year!" More information is available online at chuckals.net.

Fire destroys South Tacoma Way tavern

Posted online Weds., Aug. 21 Photos Courtesy Tacoma Fire Department Tacoma fire fighters responded to a reported commercial structure fire at Sir-C's Tavern at approximately 3:55 p.m. Tuesday to find heavy flames and smoke pouring out of the one-story building located in the 6200 block of South Tacoma Way. According to Tacoma Fire spokesperson Joe Meinecke, initially crews mounted an interior attack, but moved to a defensive strategy as the well-entrenched fire compromised the structural stability

of the building. A single employee was in the business at the time of the fire and was able to escape without harm. The cause of the fire was determined to be embers from a weed-burning propane torch, which ignited a fire that was trapped inside the exterior wall of the building, eventually burning its way to the roof of the structure. The fire resulted in estimated $130,000 damage to the building and its contents, and is considered a total loss.
