To get to the Emerald City in the Land of Oz, Dorothy and her friends just had to follow the Yellow Brick Road.

To get to the Emerald City in the Pacific Northwest, early 20th century travelers coming from the east just had to follow the Land of Redmond’s Red Brick Road.

Running from Northeast Union Hill Road to State Route 202, the north-south road — also known as 196th Avenue Northeast — is located just outside the City of Redmond in unincorporated King County. It was originally a dirt road and part of the Yellowstone Trail, which ran from Seattle to Boston and was the northernmost of four main highways in the United States at the time, ac-

Threats: Redmond police responded to a report at 12:12 p.m. of a threat from the 6900 block of Old Redmond Road in Grass Lawn via telephone.

Grand theft auto: Officers took a report of a stolen vehicle at 6:19 a.m. from the 3900 block of West Lake Sammamish Parkway in Overlake.

Sunday, Aug. 4 Shoplifting: At 8:38 p.m., Redmond police took a shoplifting report from the 17600 block of Union Hill Road downtown.

Suspects were caught on camera.

Alcohol theft: A male suspect stole liquor from a store in the 17200 block of Redmond Way downtown at 10:21 a.m. The incident was captured on video surveillance.

When Patrick Lee passed out fliers at Redmond Derby Days for the upcoming Sammamish Valley Festival, he mentioned to people that Theno’s Dairy was “reopening” at the event.

“Kids were grabbing fliers out of my hands,” said Lee of the excited youth.

The beloved 70-year-old Redmond dairy, which specialized in ice cream, closed in May of 2012.

Doug Bloor owned the dairy for 33 years and said his decisions to close included road construction at the intersection where they were located, the removal of their back driveway access, the down economy and the rising cost of doing business, according to a letter to the editor he sent to The Woodinville Weekly. The dairy was located at 12248 Woodinville Redmond Road N.E. on Washington Cathedral land.

Theno’s is not reopening in the traditional sense of selling ice cream out of a building.

Lee and his nonprofit Bona fide American Mission (BAM) will be offering ice cream out of a rental refrigerated truck at the free festival, which will take place Aug. 16-17 at 16215 140th Place N.E.

The Theno’s sweet cold concoction with natural ingredients is being made in 21 Acres’ kitchen in Woodinville out of the same ice cream maker that Theno’s used. It’s been transported from the old building, refurbished and installed at 21 Acres, a nonprofit agricultural center that is paying up-front costs for the Theno’s resurgence, Lee said.

If they sell 4,000 scoops at the festival, Lee said that Theno’s will make enough money to continue selling ice cream at other

festivals and continue the Theno’s legacy.

Lee said the 21 Acres board of directors are excited to play a role in the Theno’s comeback, which will also feature the usage of the dairy’s famed fiberglass cow.

Bloor will help start the project and Donna Reynolds — whose great-grandparents opened the milk dairy 70 years ago — will aid in the promotions department. (Theno’s Vivian’s Pride ice cream is named after Reynolds’ great-grandmother.)

“It’s her inspiration. It’s her childhood. It’s her memories… just like a lot of younger kids,” Lee said of Reynolds and other ice cream fans.

Reynolds, 25, added: “I’m really excited that everyone who knows Theno’s will be able to share Theno’s with their kids and their friends who have never experienced Theno’s.”

Pete Theno, Reynolds’ grandfather and former dairy owner, passed away in April, and a few weeks later she found out about the Theno’s ice cream project.

“It’s been a true blessing,” she said. “I was so down, and something so good came to lift me up again.”

Ride-along with police officer is a stellar Night Out Driving around town in a police car — not a bad way to spend part of my Tuesday evening. I’m talking front-seat action, not a back-seat-in-handcuffs ride for this guy.

Thanks to Redmond police officer Krista Bauer, I was able to tag along with her on National Night Out Against Crime as we visited a pair of block parties to meet with residents and get a taste of what is on their minds regarding crime, safety, traffic and keeping in touch with their neighbors to make sure everything runs smoothly on their streets.

At our first stop on 168th Avenue Northeast, a few kids greeted us with waves as we arrived. Bauer, a first-year patrol officer, smiled and caught their ears with a “Hey guys, how are you?”

Redmond City Council member Hank Margeson was on hand at this party and he flowed through the crowd and answered questions about city matters.

“For me, it’s connecting with my neighbors and the people that I represent. Getting their input and checking the temperature of how things are going in our community, sharing information,” he said, adding that someone at a previous party he attended that evening was concerned about a house break-in on their block. At last year’s Night Out, people discussed a tattered street near a park and cars speeding on their streets.

so once a year you get to meet new people and see all the new families that have moved in,” he said. “It’s fantastic getting the police and the fire department to come out. The kids love that. You get to meet them — you don’t get to see them very often when they’re zooming down the street.”

Bauer, who laughed with the kids, but also had important discussions with parents, added about Night Out: “It’s great outreach, seeing the young kids and giving them the opportunity to crawl in and out of a police car and have an experience with a police officer that’s a positive one.”

During our two party visits, people asked her about home burglaries, car prowls and traffic issues that we’ve reported on in the newspaper. She advised people to keep their doors and windows locked and not to leave valuables in their cars.

Our second party of the night on 105th Court featured block watch captain David Kemp, who was preparing the coals on his barbecue when I tracked him down.

“We really enjoy it (Night Out). It’s nice for everybody to get together and communicate about what’s going on in the neighborhood and just to recognize faces and get to know each other a little bit,” he said. One of his victories as captain was getting a centrally located mailbox station placed on his block that features everyone’s mailboxes in one spot. People were previously reporting a lot of break-ins, so this is a secure place for their mail to be delivered.

As we headed back to the station, Bauer was upbeat about her first Night Out experience. She received kind words from one child, “I respect what you do,” and that alone has to keep her satisfied about her job.

“I’ve definitely found that I’ve picked the right career,” Bauer told me earlier in the evening. “It’s nice getting to help people. (I) have the opportunity to get out on the streets and meet people.”

It’s a challenging job, a physical profession — and that’s what she enjoys about it.

“It’s something new every day,” she said.

It’s time to go solar Residents of northwest Washington are so lucky to live in a place as beautiful as the Puget Sound; blue skies, Mount Rainier in the distance, what’s not to love? In a place so gorgeous, it’s easy to forget how much we trash it.

Gas and coal-fired plants provide over half of our nation’s energy, with more problems arising every day.

We use destructive measures to attain it, spending millions of dollars in the process, and send it back out into the pristine gardens of Mother Nature in massive quantities of pollution. The saddest part of it all is that we have an alternative energy source that is reliable, pollution-free and vastly untapped. The answer is simple. The answer is solar.

In western Washington, we get 30 percent more sunlight than Germany, the world’s leader in solar energy. If we were to install 150,000 solar rooftops by 2020, Washington

could prevent carbon dioxide from 460,000 cars out of our atmosphere.

We already have the buildings, we have the sun, all we need is the support for solar.

It’s time for Washington to be a leader. It’s time for us to go solar.

Congress can do better It truly does not seem to matter whether our so-called Congress is in session or on what it calls a “recess,” because by its own admission it applies itself very diligently to doing absolutely nothing of consequence no matter what time of year it is. It is public knowledge that it has left undone a truly mammoth amount of business in the course of its most recent get-together. Yes, it is quite correct to say that House and Senate members must meet with their constituents. It is also sadly necessary for them to raise gobs of cash in their home districts. Even so, the nation’s legislative body manages to

accomplish only a micro-miniscule amount of the deliberation and lawmaking that it potentially could.

Our Congress, sadly, is both less productive and far more addicted to petty procedural nonsense than the UK’s Parliament. One would have to go back to Britain’s pre-Reform Bill of 1832 Parliaments to find transAtlantic legislative dysfunctionalism that is as bad as what is displayed in our contemporary House and Senate. It is a disgrace for our Representatives and Senators to go on their so-called “summer recess” without really having done more than a pittance of what the general public has a right to expect. While it would be inhuman to lock our “bipartisan battalions of burgesses” in a room until they truly and finally perform the public’s business (or would it?), and actually do what a legislative chamber is supposed to do, it is plain that America is very ill-served by its current bunch of Congresspersons.

They can do much better than at present.

A better idea for park-and-ride lots Sound Transit is planning to institute a pilot plan to charge for usage of its parking garages. The plan is wrong because it will not deter non-transit use of garages.

Their plan will legitimize the misuse of park and ride facilities at bargain rates. It will charge transit riders twice.

The Orca card should be used to enter the garage and then charged market rate for parking only if you don’t ride transit within 30 minutes.

This will directly address the issue of misuse of the facility.

First responders save missing woman Two Redmond police officers, one Bellevue police officer and Redmond fire personnel administered CPR last Friday evening to save the life of a missing Bellevue woman.

On Friday, the family of a 74-year-old Bellevue woman reported their mother missing to the Bellevue Police Department. Six hours later, at approximately 7:30 p.m. that evening, the woman was found disoriented by a passerby in the 14000 block of Northeast 87th Street in Redmond.

Two Redmond police officers responded and five minutes later the missing woman went into cardiac arrest. The officers began CPR while a third officer, from Bellevue, retrieved a defibrillator. The Redmond police officers performed CPR, paused to deliver a shock with the defibrillator, and then continued CPR as Redmond firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene.

All first responders worked together for more than 20 minutes delivering CPR, additional shocks, medications and airway control until the patient was transported to Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland with a sustainable heart rhythm.

At press time, the patient was in critical condition.

Redmond police are trained in CPR by Redmond fire personnel and this call happened to reunite the actual CPR instructors with two officers they trained.

“Our thoughts are foremost with the patient and her family as we continue to await her condition,” said Redmond Police Chief and acting interim Fire Chief Ron Gibson. “This situation exemplifies the importance of first responders working together across departments and city agencies, as well as the utmost importance of knowing CPR.”

A 36-year-old former Microsoft senior program manager was charged with second-degree rape on July 31 in King County Superior Court.

The alleged crime took place at about 11 p.m. on July 22 in defendant Vineet Kumar Srivastava’s office in Building 27.

According to charging

documents, he invited a janitor into his office, prevented her from escaping and raped her.

He placed his condom in the trash and took the bin with him as he left his office.

The 33-year-old janitor informed her on-site supervisor of the incident, but he didn’t believe her and didn’t alert police, documents state. Another supervisor eventually

contacted the Redmond Police Department (RPD) about the rape on July 24.

A Redmond man pleaded guilty on Aug. 5 to vehicular homicide and reckless endangerment for killing a Kirkland bicyclist in December 2011.

Nathan Jeremie Godwin, 28, initially pleaded not guilty to striking 36-year-old Bradley J. Nakatani of Kirkland with his SUV in 2011. “… I was the designated driver, but drank alcohol and smoked some marijuana before driving my friend home,” Godwin said in his plea statement.

“I was speeding through an intersection and failed to see a bicyclist and hit and killed him.”

A King County prosecuting attorney recommended Godwin receive one year of jail time and a $5,000 fine for reckless endangerment and 20 months of jail time with 18 months of community custody for vehicular homicide. Godwin’s sentencing hearing is set for Sept. 6 at King County Superior Court.

On Dec. 8, 2011 at around 3 a.m., Godwin sped 60 mph in his SUV east on Northeast 124th

Street when he collided with Nakatani and his bicycle, according to Kirkland police investigation records. Nakatani had just turned south onto Slater Avenue Northeast from the street Godwin was on and died of severe trauma.

Documents state Godwin originally told police he was sober but that he had taken Suboxone to treat his opiate addiction about six hours prior.

After agreeing to a sobriety test and failing, he told police he had drank a “Jeremiah Weed Iced Tea,” an alcoholic

Hansen said the space can be leased to one tenant as it previously was or could be split to accommodate multiple tenants. It will depend on who they talk to, he said.

When asked how soon visitors will be seeing these new businesses at RTC, Hansen said it will take some time.

Microsoft employee named honoree for SummeRun event

In late May 2001, Susun Hosford lay down in the sauna at her gym and noticed a lump the size of a lemon protruding from the left side of her lower abdomen.

She made an appointment with her OB/GYN, who took immediate action with a sonograph and a blood test. When the results came back, they learned it was late-stage ovarian cancer. Hosford, a senior consultant at Microsoft Corp., went into surgery two months later and underwent nine months of chemotherapy.

During her treatment, she learned about the SummeRun and Walk for Ovarian Cancer. The 5K run/walk is put on every year by the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research with proceeds benefiting the Seattle-based nonprofit.

Hosford participated in the event — which takes

place in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, where she also lives — but she didn’t realize the toll it would take on her body and how tired she would be during the walk.

“I literally had been one week out of surgery and one week into chemo,” she said about the event’s timing.

Despite that first experience, Hosford — who was 50 when she was diagnosed — has participated in the SummeRun every year since then. The now 62-year-old has also been cancer free since then.

This year, Hosford was also the SummeRun honoree, an ovarian cancer survivor who is chosen to be the spokesperson for the event.

According to a Rivkin Center press release, the honoree is “typically someone who has made advocacy and building awareness of ovarian cancer part of her life.”

After her first Summe-

Run, Hosford continued fundraising for the Rivkin Center event. She wanted to get more involved after a few years and so began volunteering for the organization. In addition, Hosford decided to focus any major fundraising she does on the Rivkin Center.

“I decided primarily because the Rivkin Center is very focused on scientific research,” she said.

Hosford explained that the treatment she received after she was diagnosed was a clinical trial.

Nine years after she first got involved in the Rivkin Center, Hosford was asked to sit on the nonprofit’s board of directors. She was hesitant at first, telling the executive director who asked her that she is not a “big name” who could help increase the Rivkin Center’s visibility; nor was she someone with deep pockets who could contribute financially. Constantine, Yes on Parks weigh in on Proposition 1 primary election returns The Yes on Parks Campaign announced on Tuesday evening that the initial primary election returns indicate that the parks levy renewal, known as Proposition 1, will ultimately be approved by voters. At press time, the King County Elections website notes that 187,939 voters (69.44 percent) approved the levy renewal while 82,691 voters (30.56 percent) rejected the levy renewal.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 75th anniversary this year of King County Parks,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine.

“Thank you to the voters who value our shared regional open space.”

The levy renews funding that currently provides more than 70 percent of the funding to operate and maintain King County’s network of parks, 26,000 acres of open space and more than 175 miles of regional trails and 185 miles of backcountry trails. The additional 30 percent of parks funding comes from revenue collected through efforts including Concerts at Marymoor Park, and swim meets at the Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

King County parks are funded through the end of the year with the existing levy. A renewal will provide funding to continue necessary maintenance and operations starting in January 2014.

Hosford said this was exactly why she was asked: She was someone who had actually survived ovarian cancer. To this day, Hosford is still the only Rivkin Center board member who had been an ovarian cancer patient.

Ovarian cancer is often referred to as the silent killer because there is no definitive way to detect it, and once it is found, the cancer has often progressed to a very late stage. And with symptoms that include abdominal bloating, discomfort or pain, a lack of appetite, lack of energy and nausea,

it’s easy to mistake them for something else.

Hosford pointed out that many women have experienced these symptoms all at the same time for various reasons having nothing to do with cancer. She also acknowledged that she was lucky to have found that lemonsized lump because not many other women have such an obvious symptom that something is wrong, adding that if she were 20 pounds heavier, she probably wouldn’t have found the lump until it was too late.

“Diagnosing this disease is almost impossible,” Hosford said.

Redmond Public Works begins Overlake utility relocation Samantha Pak

We think the best way to care for our neighbors is to be in the neighborhood.

On Monday, the City of Redmond’s Public Works Department began Phase 1 of its Utility Relocation project in the Overlake neighborhood.

The work is preparation for the South Detention Vault in Overlake Village, which will regulate the area’s stormwater once it is built. This will help with the neighborhood’s redevelopment as it becomes one of two designated urban centers in the City of Redmond. Project manager Joseph O’Leary said the vault will also help the local environment and flood control.

The work being done is on Northeast 20th Street as crews are relocating existing power and stormwater utilities within the vault footprint, which will be in the Sears parking lot at the intersection of 148th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 20th Street.

Jeri Rowe-Curtis, chief communications officer for the City of Redmond, acknowledged that the project will be inconvenient with the road closure and noise from equipment, but they hope people will look at things with a long-term view.

“We want people to think about the end goal,” she said.

She added that people “don’t see what’s below,” so they don’t always realize the work that needs to be done before development can begin.

“The day work will not be the pipe work,” O’Leary said.

He added that they will be installing the pipe “segment by segment,” about 100 feet at a time and the street closure is scheduled to last through September. Construction on the vault facility is scheduled to begin in March 2014 and last through November of next year.

Sidewalks on the south side of the street will also be closed and bus stops will be temporarily relocated during Phase 1 construction as well as the southeast corner of the Sears parking lot.

Seattle-based Bartell Drugs and Element Cycles of Redmond have teamed up to sponsor and support the “Bartell Obliteride Biker” who will participate in the Obliteride, a new pledge/fundraising bicycle ride event today through Sunday benefitting the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Holly Westerfield of Seattle was selected by Bartell Drugs as the “Bartell Obliteride Biker,” with Bartell Drugs providing Westerfield’s Obliteride registration and fundraising support and Element Cycles donating a Focus Culebro bike, Giro Savant helmet and jersey.

was the first in her family to graduate from college and is currently a doctoral candidate in higher education administration at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

And now just three weeks into her new position as president of the Lake Washington Institute of Technology, this notion is what has impressed Goings the most about the college so far.

She spent most of her first week away from her desk,

speaking with students, faculty and staff. She said she’s “very impressed” by some of the faculty and staff members’ longevity at the school, some as long as 15 to 26 years.

“To me, that just really speaks to their commitment to the institutions well-being, as well as to the success of our students,” Goings said.

of our mission because everyone who works at an institution like Lake Washington knows how transformative workforce education can be in the lives of our students and their families.”

The Lake Washington Institute of Technology board of trustees unanimously chose Goings as the school’s ninth president in May. The decision completed a sevenmonth public process.

Before Goings began her community and technical college career, she worked as deputy director in the Legislature for retired Congressman Norm Dicks.

During this time, she helped the Bates Technical College legislative committee to better understand how federal legislation impacted students.

She began her career at

Bates, and later joined Clover Park Technical College, working as vice president of operations and college relations.

“But my personal and professional commitment is really to advancing workforce education,” Goings said.

“So when the opportunity presented itself to come here, I was just so thrilled because this institution is really a leader statewide … and especially an inspiration to other technical colleges because Lake Washington was the first to be granted the op-

portunity to offer a four-year applied baccalaureate degree.”

She said she was also attracted to the college because it is “partnership oriented.”

She said many of the career training programs at the school have industry partnerships locally, regionally and even internationally with such partners as Microsoft, Boeing, EvergreenHealth and DigiPen. “I just really look forward to continuing to build upon the great work that’s already taken place here in establishing community partnerships with area businesses to bolster our programs,” Goings said. “When we’re connected to the community that means that our employers have the workforce that they need and it means that our students are successful in getting familysustainable jobs.”

This partnership collaboration is part of the “five-Cs” approach she brings to her position: Community, communication, collaboration, capital and completion.

She said community is important to her and she moved with her husband and 8-year-old son from Puyallup to downtown Kirkland

last week. She also plans to become a member of the Redmond Rotary.

As for “communication,” Goings will continue to get out on campus regularly to speak with students and faculty. The school will hold a meet and greet event this fall when the college community and community-at-large can meet with Goings.

For “completion” she said she will work to ensure that students continue to have a “seamless pathway” as they complete their goals.

She said the college’s No. 1 challenge currently is funding.

“All of the two-year colleges have been through the Great Recession,” Goings said. “Fortunately, we’re grateful that we did not receive any additional cuts [through the Legislature] because two-year colleges have sustained cuts since 2008.”

She is also pleased students will not see another tuition increase, thanks to the state budget the Legislature recently passed.

“Going forward we’ll be able to steadily rebuild and restore those state funds that we’ve lost over the Great

Recession but also do so in a way that we’re really continuing to be responsive to the changing needs of our industry and our employers in the region so that we’re expanding and bringing on new two- and four-year programs that meet those workforce needs.”

She will also work with the college’s foundation to make sure the public institution has the resources it needs through scholarships, in-kind donations and other sources.

She plans to meet with the college’s board of trustees and executive cabinet to discuss the institutions goals and next strategic plan, which will be approved this fall.

So far, she said she’s received a “very warm welcome” from the community.

“I look forward to being a good neighbor and being very involved in the community along with my family,” Goings said, adding, “This institute is a tremendous asset and I want to make sure the community knows that we are here, we will continue to be a willing partner and look forward to partnering to meet the needs of our employers in the community.”

Gianola lands Wittenbach Scholarship

Redmond native Heather Gianola has been awarded a Wittenbach Scholarship for $1,500 for the 2013-14 academic year at Eastern Washington University (EWU).

Gianola is pursuing a master’s degree in occupational therapy, which is a requirement for the scholarship, in addition to maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

At EWU, Gianola is a student delegate to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

She is a 2004 graduate of Redmond High School. Gianola’s parents Jere and Pamela still reside in Redmond.

Zetron aids fire victims

Zetron, a Redmond-based provider of mission-critical communication systems for public safety, transportation and utilities, is donating $5,127 to benefit the families of 19 firefighters who lost their lives June 30 battling the Yarnell Hill Fire 30 miles south of Prescott, Ariz.

The contribution includes donations from Zetron employees and matching funds from the company and Zetron president and Chief Executive Officer Ellen O’Hara.

The firefighters were members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite firefighting crew with the Prescott Fire Department. The City of Prescott is a Zetron customer.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families of the firefighters whose lives were lost in the Yarnell Hill Fire,” said O’Hara. “A tragedy like this is a difficult reminder of the dangers firefighters face every day to keep us safe. But it also reminds us of how such an event reverberates beyond local boundaries and connects us all. We sincerely hope that our contribution can, in some way, help the firefighters’ families in their efforts to heal from this profound loss.”

Reed’s work as a Microsoft software architect prompted him to join Toastmasters, which is known for its success in developing public speaking skills.

“Before I joined Toast-

masters, I saw myself on a video speaking to thousands of people at two different technical conferences,” recalls Reed.

“I could tell the guy on the video was terrible.”

Three years ago, Reed joined MicroToast, a Toastmasters club at Microsoft.

“I joined with the stated goal of learning to shut up,” said Reed. “I am still learning how to say effectively what needs to be said without rambling on.”

Since joining Toastmasters, Reed and his wife, Samia, have plunged into the organization in a major
