In the flesh: Thrasher is Best Tattoo Shop By JESSIE STENSLAND | Staff reporter

One of Whidbey’s youngest business owners may also be one of the most enthusiastic. Kyle Gonzalez is just 24 years old, but he’s already been a successful business owner for five years. He may look a little intimidating. He’s got a face full of piercings and a body covered with tattoos. But he’s really just a friendly guy who’s eager about his business and serious about his art. Gonzalez owns Thrasher Tattoo, where he’s the sole tattoo artist. Voters named it the Best Tattoo Shop in the Whidbey News-Times Best of Whidbey contest for 2013. Last year he came in second. The tattoo business is going gangbusters. “It’s been five years and I feel like I’ve made it,” he said. Gonzalez said his shop has seen a tenfold increase in business since he moved it to a prime spot on Pioneer Way last summer. He shares the building with his close friend, Steve

Larne, who runs Metallic Mayhem Piercing. Metallic Mayhem was named Best Place to Get Pierced. Gonzalez is nearly an Oak Harbor native, having moved to the city when he was just 3 years old. He went to Oak Harbor schools, but dropped out before graduation. He’s always been fascinated by tattoos. His brother was a tattoo artist when he was growing up. “When I was supposed to be paying attention in class, I would be doodling,” he said. He learned how to tattoo while he was working at an Oak Harbor piercing shop called Twisted. Like many tattoo artists, he honed his craft on himself. For a long time only his left arm was filled with tattoos since he’s right-handed. Gonzalez started Thrasher Tattoo in 2009 at a hard-to-find spot in the Bayshore Drive area. “Thrasher” is the nickname he bore throughout high school. He said he always kept his eye on a small building on Pioneer Way at

the intersection of Midway Boulevard and Bayshore Drive. The building, which he calls his “dream spot,” had been abandoned for years. Gonzalez finally persuaded the outof-state owner to rent the building to him last year. It took a lot of work to get it ready; the roof was caved in and the inside was a ruin. “We did it with a screwdriver, two hammers and a hacksaw,” he said. Now he can focus on his craft. He described his style as “neo-traditional,” which means he “adds a new spin” to traditional styles. He said the unusual tattoo he’s done is his face on a friend’s butt. “That was pretty weird,” he said. Among his best tattoos is a “biomechanical piece” that looks like skin is tearing away to reveal gears and pistons underneath. He also likes an “evil elephant” he gave his girlfriend. The only tattoo he regrets getting is an image of a club sandwich on his arm. He and a group of friends were all going to get them as part of their “club,” but he was the only one who went through with it. Besides that, he said he’s very fond of his tattoos. “Each tattoo represents a different part of my life,” he said. “They’re each like a story. They take me right back to that time in my life.”

Jim Slowik might’ve lost his re-election bid as Oak Harbor mayor nearly two years ago, but he certainly didn’t lose his sense of humor. When told recently that he was a winner in the Whidbey News-Times’ “Best of Whidbey” contest, his response was instant. “Was it the most hated guy in town?” he quipped. Quite the contrary, Slowik was voted “Most Influential,” which caught him off guard. The contest consists of write-in votes. His name outnumbered the rest. “I’ve won a few of those in the past,” he said, referring to different categories. “This one’s a surprise.” “I’ll be darned. That’s quite a compliment. I don’t know what to say.” Slowik, 64, has been a visible, influential figure in the Oak Harbor community for three decades. He’s owned two automobile businesses and worked two stints in the banking industry, including his latest position as assistant vice president and commercial loan officer at Peoples Bank on Pioneer Way. His reach has extended far outside of the business world from politics to education to community organizations. “He’s been a great, great supporter to the community,” said Gary Wallin, Oak Harbor School District board president and owner of Wallin Funeral Home. “He worked tirelessly for the schools. He’s a very caring individual, very involved in the community. He’s also very giving. A class guy. He’s very polished in what he does.”

Jim Slowik

This is about bringing people together and hopefully making this economy stronger.

Slowik is also described as a kind man. He’s served on the board of directors of Island Thrift since 1997. A former Marine, he is president of the Navy League, a civilian support group for maritime services. Slowik was once president of the Oak Harbor School District board and mayor of the city. “I love Whidbey Island and especially Oak Harbor,” Slowik said. “I love your school district. I think we have so much to offer in the way of our facilities, our city beach park, three miles of low-bank waterfront. That’s why I ran for mayor was to upgrade that and try to keep that in as good of condition as we could. “This is a wonderful place to live.” He and his wife Candace have lived in the same Oak Harbor home for 30 years and recently celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary by having five grandchildren at the house for what Slowik calls “Grammy Camp.” The Slowiks have four children, with one son, Tony Slowik, a two-time winner of the Best of Whidbey’s top police officer. When asked if he would be voted “Most Influential” in his own household, Slowik laughed. “I’d hope to be voted ‘Most Obedient,’” he said. Although he says he’s done with politics, Slowik still boasts about Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island as if he were the area’s tourism director. As a commercial loan officer, he’s happy to be able to use his experience to help other business owners thoughout Whidbey Island. “You want to help people. It’s not about me,” Slowik said. “I’ve already had my business career. This is about bringing people together and hopefully making this economy stronger.”

Mobile trailer sends yogurt shop to the top

By Nathan WHaLeN | Staff reporter

An Oak Harbor yogurt shop has been open for a year and Whidbey families are taking notice. Business at Toppins is good enough to warrant a mobile expansion as frozen treat connoisseurs enjoy its sundaes and cones enough to award the locally owned business Best Ice Cream / Yogurt in the 2013 Best of Whidbey contest sponsored by the Whidbey News-Times. Owner James Croft unveiled a 30foot trailer in early June that served hundreds of walkers participating in the North Whidbey Relay for Life at the North Whidbey Middle School track. “It features a full-service yogurt shop on wheels,” Croft said. He said he will bring the trailer to major events on Whidbey Island, including the Oak Harbor’s Fourth of July celebration, the annual car show, National Night Out and more. He is also looking for other events — such as church functions, fundraisers and other large gatherings — where

people might enjoy his frozen yogurt. He said the mobile yogurt shop is a new concept and he knows of only one other business in the United States that has such a mobile operation. His custom-made trailer meets and exceeds health department regulations.

Ice cream trucks don’t have anything to worry about from Croft. He doesn’t have any plans to drive through the city’s neighborhoods. Toppins, which is located on Highway 20 near the intersection with Seventh Avenue, celebrated its first anniversary in late June.

Croft said he wanted to open a restaurant that offered a kid-friendly environment with plenty of fun for the entire family. His wife, Priscilla, got the idea from a friend who enjoys a similar yogurt shop on the East Coast. To keep the atmosphere light, people can buy some toy mustaches and eyeballs that they have used to make faces throughout the store. They also have a table-top video game console that offers 60 different arcade classics. “It is really customer service that is the most important thing to us,” James said. Toppins offers 10 flavors of yogurt, two flavors of sorbet and more than 80 varieties of toppings ranging from candy to fresh fruit and everything in between. Priscilla said employees also bake waffle cones and cake bottoms. Both James and Priscilla are graduates of Oak Harbor High School and they are the parents of Megan, 9, and Michael, 6.

The Toppins unique frozen yogurt dispenser truck will make its way to Whidbey Island events.

Toppins has already established a tradition of giving back to the community. The shop has raised around $15,000 that’s been doled out to such groups as the Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Club, the “Save the Blue Fox Drive-in effort,” Junior

Brothers from Coupeville are building a following By JUSTIN BURNETT | Staff reporter

Building brothers Jon and Jay Roberts have done it again, hammering out their second Best of Whidbey award in two years. Owners of Cascade Custom Homes & Design, the Coupeville-born team took first place in 2011 as the island’s best builders only to win the same honor again in 2012. “I’m proud of the business we have. I know we do a great job,” Jon said. “But this is that pat on the back.” “I’m still kinda in awe,” he said. They were also recently recognized by the Skagit/Island County Builders Association, winning Project of the Year in the 2,000- to 3,0000-squarefoot category for a home they built off West Beach Road. So what’s the secret to their success? Well, it starts off with being brothers. Of course, that has its own set of challenges but, all in all, being family is one of their chief strengths. Their roles in the business are also defined by their skills – Jon handles design and administration while Jay’s Justin Burnett Photo

Brothers Jon and Jay Roberts, owners of Cascade Custom Homes & Design, have won “best builder” in the Best of Whidbey competition for the second year in a row. One of the secrets to their success is playing on their individual skill sets – Jon handles design and administration while Jay’s expertise is working in the field as chief project manager.

expertise is working in the field as chief project manager. “It works well,” Jay said. “We’re a great team.” Their business approach isn’t too shabby either. While they have been building houses on Whidbey for 35 years, the past few have been some of the most difficult of their careers. After the bottom dropped out of the

housing market at the end of 2008, they went from building 16 homes a year to just two. It was a big enough hit for them to question their future in the industry. “We had to sit down three years ago and ask, ‘Do we want to sell shoes or keep doing what we do?’” Jay said. Home builders at heart, the answer was soon clear but they had to figure

out how to make it work. They were able to keep the business alive and their “sword sharp” by staying flexible. For example, people weren’t building but many were still interested in improving what they had. So the Roberts became experts in remodeling. But there were other areas in which the Roberts refused to bend, a decision they say is the backbone of the business and good reputation. No matter what the market was doing, the one thing they would not sacrifice was quality. Whether it’s a 6,000-square-foot home or one that’s 1,000 square feet, each is built to the same standard. “The only difference is the finish fixtures inside,” Jay said. That wasn’t always an easy philosophy to stick with, especially during the leanest of times. There were instances, Jon said, in which they were asked to build inferior homes for less and had to turn customers away. But in the end, those sacrifices were worth it. The brothers have built a reputation to match their personal standards and the payback is word-of-mouth advertising that you can’t buy. “That’s what people know us for, the quality of our work,” Jon said. Great employees, such as Project Manager Larry Mason and Office Manager Tammi Fisher, have been instrumental to their success Justin Burnett Photos as well. The business just wouldn’t be where it Jon and Jay Roberts, owners of Cascade Custom Homes & Design, insist on quality in everything they do, from building homes to remodeling. is now without them, Jon said.

A Coupeville house built by Cascade Custom Homes & Design will be part of an upcoming home tour.

Woody’s Car Wash values customers, conservation

By JANIS REID | Staff reporter

David Wilson always wanted to come back to Whidbey Island. Having flown with VAQ 129 (VAH-10) during his 11 years stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Wilson had been looking for the right opportunity to return. He found it in Woody’s Car Wash in 2001, with two locations in Oak Harbor and one in Burlington. Then a Seattle resident, Wilson sold his car wash business there and moved back. Twelve years later, Woody’s has been named the Best Car Wash in the Whidbey News-Times “Best of Whidbey” contest. “I want to thank all the customers who voted for us, but I also wanted to really thank Heidi, who does a great job and without whose efforts our customers wouldn’t have voted for us,” Wilson said. Referring to Manager Heidi Chilcote, who has worked at

Woody’s for 16 years, Wilson said she was some of the “luggage” that came with his purchase of the property. But he wouldn’t have it any other way, he said. “She has a customer following,” Wilson said. “The people love her and I think she loves most of them.” Wilson said she’s stayed with Woody’s for so long because she likes working outdoors and the hours have enabled her to spend maximum time with her family. In addition, Clicote said that Wilson and his son, who is partner in the business, are “great to work for.” Wilson said business has been steady since last year, but admits there have been times in the last 10 years when the economy hit them pretty hard. “There were times when you’re struggling, hanging on… but you have to be optimistic,” Wilson said. “If it was easy, everyone would do it.”

Moving forward, Wilson said he plans to completely renovate each location with new buildings, new equipment and internal water treatment systems. The new systems will allow Woody’s to recycle their own water up to three times, conserving large amounts of water, Wilson said. After a third use, the water will then be dumped into the city sewage system. Wilson said the conservation efforts are a “big step forward” for Woody’s. In addition, Wilson said he will be looking to donate space in the remodeled bays for community and school fundraisers for those who want to be as green as possible. wAnd in efforts to increase traffic, Wilson plans to roll out a customer loyalty card that can be used at any of the three locations. “We’re looking forward to earning (the Best of Whidbey honor) by our renewed commitment to the community through our renovations,” Wilson said.
