Tacoma City Council to discuss south downtown development, historic preservation Posted online Fri., June 21 Tacoma City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at City Hall to receive an update on the status of the South Downtown Subarea Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). City of Tacoma Planning and Development Services Department staff will provide a summary of the comments received on the draft plan and EIS, implementation strategies and highlights, and an overview of the project's schedule and next steps. The University of Washington Tacoma is working with the City of Tacoma as "co-lead" for the EIS. The South Downtown Subarea Plan aims to address future development of an area south of downtown Tacoma that covers approximately 600 acres and includes the University of Washington Tacoma (UW Tacoma) campus, Museum District, Foss Waterway, Brewery District, Hillside District, and Dome District. Olympic Moving and Storage opens in new Lakewood industrial park Posted online Thurs., June 20 Photo Courtesy Olympic Moving and Storage Olympic Moving and Storage announced Thursday it has opened a new 45,000-squarefoot warehouse facility in the Woodbrook Business and Industrial Park, the 150-acre site near Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Interstate 5 in Lakewood. "Our new location allows us to be nearer to the military community," said Olympic Moving and Storage vice president Jill Ihly. "We are proud to serve military members by helping to facilitate their moving and storage needs and coordinating on their behalf if deployed." Ihly is the third generation in her family to work in the moving industry, following her grandparents and parents into the family business. The business opened in 1994 out of the family's Olympia home, and Olympic Moving and Storage has since grown to four current initiatives and future plans. This will include a description of key strategies for moving the program forward and raising the effectiveness and public profile of the program, as well as a general implementation schedule. TCC becomes pathway college for university prep program Photo Courtesy Tacoma Community College Tacoma Community College recently became the first two-year college recognized as a pathway college for graduates of the Global Assessment Certificate (GAC) program. The college is now part of a network consisting of more than 100 pathway colleges and universities worldwide. The University of Iowa, Oklahoma State University, and Pacific Lutheran University are among the 34 participating U.S. universities. GAC is a university preparation program that aims to provide students with the academic skills and knowledge, independent learning skills, English language proficiency and confidence to enter and successfully complete a bachelor's degree at university. successfully complete assignments and assessments comparable in level to freshman year undergraduate studies. "We are very pleased to be the first community college in the country to participate in this highly successful program for international students," said Tacoma Community College President Pamela Transue (pictured far right), who signed an agreement with ATC Education Solutions' Global Academic Director Ros Washington (pictured near right) on June 6. "Because of the way the program is structured, when these students arrive for study at higher education institutions in the United States, they are well prepared to be successful."
