Hometown theater Valley Center Stage offers shows for all ages Visiting town and hungry for live entertainment? Be a patron of quality theater at North Bend’s Valley Center Stage.

This intimate 100-seat live theater in the center of downtown North Bend is in its ninth year of presenting quality theater, entertainment and variety shows.

The annual season runs from September through June and includes four main stage plays per season. Valley Center Stage also presents children’s theater, dances and concerts—since 2004, they’ve produced more than 75 different events.

In the Valley, fans return to

Twin Peaks

Start feeling your mortality. The “Twin Peaks” television series was first aired 21 years ago. It has since become a cult favorite, and each year there is a gathering of the devoted, here in the Snoqualmie Valley, where most of the exterior locations were filmed—places like Twede’s Cafe in North Bend, the Reinig Road trestle bridge, and today’s Snoqualmie Point Park.

“Twin Peaks” was such a groundbreaking show that it’s hard to measure just how much of an influence it had on award winning shows that came later, such as “Lost” and “The Sopranos”. Nearly all television drama up until that point was a narrative that fitted into a time capsule dominated by commercials. Here was an exciting detective series but with a soap-opera personality.

Director David Lynch came with his cinematic conventions and applied them with skill to the medium of television. He turned conventions inside out. In the middle of what seemed to

be an ordinary scene, he introduced weird characters, dreams, ghosts, and paranormal phenomena. Cinema buffs were enthralled by the visual jokes and riddles that Lynch inserted into every episode and audiences were hooked.

Part of the lure of the “Twin Peaks” cult, is looking for, and revealing interesting little quirks. There are character’s names that also appear in other Lynch works. There is his unusual way of creating strange speech patterns: The actors learned the lines backwards and then he rewound them. New characters would be created on the set as he saw something that intrigued him.

Lynch was used to working with movie stars, and he used them. Suddenly it was really cool for big names in Hollywood to be lured to TV. Kyle MacLachlan cemented his acting future in his role as special agent Dale Cooper, becoming a hot property, while Lara Flynn Boyle said that “Twin Peaks” gave her her career.

Today, 21 years after the show first wowed TV audiences, the Internet community continues to watch all of the “Twin Peaks” episodes.

eekends in the Valley can send you back in time more than a century, when you stop at the Northwest Railway Museum.

A historic depot (38625 S.E. King St.), walking trail, five-plus miles of track, and the working railroad make up the museum, which makes Snoqualmie the same tourism destination that it was 120 years ago.

Tourists were coming from Seattle—it took all day to get here on the train, or a good part of the day—but they were coming out here to see the sights Snoqualmie Falls remains one of the main attractions, and the museum’s train brings visitors to the sight about once an hour, from April through October. In June, it will also bring them to the museum’s Railway History Center, on Stone Quarry Road, for tours by appointment. The center is home to many of the museum’s train cars, including the chapel car that travelled the region to host weddings years ago.

Museum visitors can see much of their historic collection of cars up close, as they walk along the trail north of the depot, but it’s the experience of riding the train that excites most people.

It’s a great place for families to come and be together and have fun. Train excursions tour Snoqualmie, North Bend, and the Falls every 70 minutes, and riders can board in either city.

T

he best of the Valley, from live entertainment, fresh food and produce and unique gifts, can be found every Thursday evening through the summer at North Bend’s own big backyard.

The North Bend Farmers Market is a summer time tradition now in its ninth year at Si View Park, 400 S.E. Orchard Drive.

The 2013 season brings many reasons to celebrate, from the grand-reopening of this renovated park and enhanced market area, to welcoming new vendors to the mix and a full season of live concerts.

The weekly market is open on Thursday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m., June 13 through September 12 (closed on July 4).

The Farmers Market vendors offer abundant selection of fresh produce, berries, meats, honey, flowers, and botanicals; bottled wine, baked goods, dried pasta, seasoning oils and vinegars; delicious prepared foods including woodfired pizza, tamales, Asian specialties, tasty barbecue, all natural hot dogs, cupcakes and shaved ice; as well as a variety of unique handcrafted items from jewelry to baby items to yard décor.

The play will be performed under the newly constructed picnic shelter by a talented cast of Valley Center Stage actors from the local community theater. This play is suitable for all ages, and will be offered free of charge. Bring a picnic blanket or a lawn chair.

Festival at Mount Si The Festival at Mount Si honors the community spirit of North Bend as it preserves the past, celebrates the present, and embraces the future. This annual festival takes place at Si View Park on the second weekend of August each year.

The festival offers something for

everyone. Shop ‘til you drop with arts and crafts vendors hailing from all over the state of Washington.

Get your corn-on-the-cob, elephant ears, and much more at the many booths offering some of the area’s best food and drink. Relax in the beer garden while supporting the festival and the local Rotary Club.

Or, if visitors want to let their dogs off the leash to romp or relax, the Valley boasts two off-leash parks where dogs can be dogs. Take your dog on the trail or let him roam at these dog-friendly venues:

Three Forks Off-Leash Dog Park, Snoqualmie • 39912 SE Park Street, across the road from Snoqualmie’s Centennial Fields Park.

With an open meadow giving all dogs free range to run and play,Three Forks Off Leash Dog Park, located in theThree Forks Natural Area park, is both owner- and dog-friendly. There are eight acres of open space for dogs, picnic tables for visitors, water access, and a link to the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. Clean-up bags are available.

Iron Horse Trail and State Park, North Bend • The Iron Horse trailhead access area is adjacent to Rattlesnake Lake.

Miles of trails await you and your pooch pal at Iron Horse State Park. Clip on the leash and get ready to walk or run in the 1,600-acre park, lined with more than 100 miles of trails built on old railway lines. The former railroad turned public recreation corridor gives visitors the time to enjoy spectacular scenery, bird watching and wildlife. It is supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization working to build a network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. A Discovery Day Pass is required.

Rattlesnake Lake, North Bend • Take Exit 32 on I-90, follow 436th Avenue/Cedar Falls Road south to Rattlesnake Lake.

Views, hikes, and a brilliant blue lake are only the beginning at this popular park a short drive from Seattle. Bring leashed four-legged friends on one of the many trails around the lake, or up the steep hike to Rattlesnake Ledge for a panoramic 270-degree view. Before or after your trek, you can also enjoy the kid-friendly Cedar RiverWatershedVisitors Center and the Rain Drum Courtyard. No Discovery Pass required.

Preston-Snoqualmie Trail, Fall City • Pick up the trail behind Small Fryes restaurant in Fall City.

Leashed-dog-friendly, this paved trail covers seven miles, from a view overlooking Snoqualmie Falls to the Park and Ride in Preston.

Another trail built on an old railway, this one is part of the 1,600 rail trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in the Valley. The trail also connects to soft-surface community trails atop Snoqualmie Ridge.

Tolt-MacDonald Park, and Carnation Off-Leash Dog Park • 301020 NE 40th St., a few blocks off S.R. 203/Tolt Avenue. Follow the signs toTolt-MacDonald Park, or for the off-leash park, turn west at the stoplight on Entwistle Street, go about two blocks, then follow the road left onto Larson Avenue.

Don’t leave canine friends behind when you picnic in the park of the 574-acre Tolt-McDonald Park. Owners have the opportunity to take their dogs on a leash over a 500-foot suspension bridge that crosses the Snoqualmie River and provides views of the river and Cascade foothills. For a chance to really stretch your legs (or your dog’s) follow the trail past the ball fields to Carnation’s home-grown off-leash park.

North Bend shops appeal to the heart, funny bone

hen you think about it, who couldn’t use a “No Diving” bath mat? Or a journal that gives detailed instructions on how to simultaneously enjoy and destroy it? Or a checklist of all the trails you’ve hiked, or plan to, conveniently printed on the back of a T-shirt?

Note, I didn’t write, ‘who doesn’t need’ these things, because that would be 1) stretching the definition of ‘need’, and 2) missing the point. These are gifts, the things we buy and give to people (ourselves included) just for fun! They’re the things that make us laugh, blush, cry (in the good way) or just break out of routine sometimes, made the more meaningful because they come from one person, to another. Gifts are just joy, in oddly-shaped packages, and North Bend is home to two shops specializing in exactly that.

Selah Gifts, 111 East North Bend Way, is a rainbow-colored collection of children’s toys and books, home furnishings, art, music, jewelry, crystals and, of course, gag gifts, like the inflatable unicorn horn owner Shelley Woodward shows to one group. These are sized for humans, but she says “they make these for cats, too, and they’re always on back-order.”

The customers pass on the horn, but are intrigued by another item on the shelf.

“Hey, they have zombie sleep masks!” one of the women announces, to a response of “cool,” from one of her friends, and “do they have other kinds, too?” from another. If not, they probably will soon, because Woodward carries about 100 lines of items at any one time, and guesses she’s dealt with more than 400 lines. “We’re always getting in new stuff,” she said, “We’re rarely predictable.”

Some of her favorites have staying power, though, like the La Vie Parisienne jewelry line she loves.

“You get a lot of sparkle from these,” she said.

The kids’ section takes up an entire corner of the store, and is packed with Klutz books, craft kits, games, toys and candy. Kids are quick to find their own way back to the corner, where they can check out everything at their own level.

“I love working with kids because they’re funny and honest and goofy,” Woodward says.

She also loves working with people, including her distributors. “I don’t order anything online,” she says, because she wants to make a connection with every person in her store. It’s the same when she’s helping a customer, and when she’s ordering, she says. “It’s just kind of seeing the things that say, ‘get this!’” she explained.

Selah Gifts is open Tuesday through Friday starting at 10:30 a.m., closing at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 6 p.m. on other weekdays.

Eclectic and soulful Birches Habitat, 111 E North Bend Way, has the tagline “eclectic soulful living,” and a merchandise selection to match. Here you’ll find art books mingling with funny golf gifts, lodge decor in with T-shirts that read “In dog beers, I’ve only had one,” and elegant found-art jewelry on the counter with one of Birches better sellers, the Dammit Doll.

“The Dammit Dolls are great!” says Nancy Wray, who owns and operates the store with her husband Steve, and their two dogs. Holding the colorful doll, featureless except for some yarn hair, by its feet and whacking it on the counter, she laughs. “It’s a great stress reliever!”

A whirlwind tour of the shop’s best sellers includes: an old fashioned gas pump that is actually a drink dispenser; the “Redneck Wine Glass,” or Mason jar on a stem, complete with a lid and ring; comical books like “When Parents Text” and “Underwater Dogs”; and a selection of coin purses and canvas bags with sayings like “Truly fabulous people never get dressed before lunch;” A lot of local artisans have found homes for their wares here, too.

“I try really, really hard to have North Bend stuff, local stuff,” said Wray, including books by local authors, soaps made in the Valley, and all types of art.

One example is the “Hike North Bend” T-shirt designed by a local man. The front is a footprint, the back has the whole trail checklist. Wray expected it to become a popular men’s gift, which is a niche that her store has grown into, she says, as they’ve grown their selection of men’s books, shirts and other gifts.

Most days, Birches will see more women than men, thanks to a selection of fun and funky clothing, but women get equal treatment on the selection of books and gifts, too, “One of the things I try to think about is the person who has everything,” says Wray, since she has many customers asking her for ideas for these challenging gifts. The other group she focuses on is older people who maybe don’t get around as well as they used to.

Mighty waterfall Glaciers, industry carved a dramatic cataract at popular 278-foot Snoqualmie Falls Every year, more than one million people flock to Snoqualmie Falls. Just a short walk from a busy highway, visitors can take in the dramatic vista of cliff walls and falling water, hear the mighty 278-foot cataract and feel the spray of its mists.

Go to the Falls: Snoqualmie Falls is accessible from two public parking lots just off State Highway 202 about a half mile northwest of downtown Snoqualmie.

Travelers on Interstate 90 can access Highway 202 from Exit 25, by traveling on Snoqualmie Parkway north over Snoqualmie Ridge, or take the historic loop through downtown Snoqualmie via Exit 27, eastbound.

Secrets of the Falls Snoqualmie Falls holds secrets beneath its waters. A century ago, workers bored tunnels beneath the bedrock and built one of the nation's first hydroelectric power plants. Today, Puget Sound Energy is nearly finished with a huge retrofit of the power plant and surrounding grounds. Some parts of the park, including the lower trail and kayak put-in area, are off limits this summer, but there’s still plenty to see and do, from historic exhibits to a grand view.

Other secrets are in the sky. Snoqualmie Falls is home to a family of peregrine falcons. These fast birds prey on the many other creatures who live or visit the falls. Try to spot them on their perches around the canyon walls.

Ancient history When humans first came to the Snoqualmie Valley some 5,000 years ago, they encountered the awe-inspiring 278-foot cataract. The falls was sculpted by the huge glaciers that covered Puget Sound eons ago. The river had been moved from its ancient bed by ice and gravel, and when the ice melted, it could not seek its natural level because of bedrock encountered at the lip of what we now call Snoqualmie Falls.

For the Snoqualmie Tribe, who have lived for centuries in the Snoqualmie Valley, the waterfall is central to their beliefs and culture.

They believe it to be the place where the first man and woman were created by Moon the Transformer. The mists rising from the base of the waterfall are said to connect heaven and earth.

What to do?

There's more to do at the Falls than just standing around. Hike a trail, spot all kinds of wildlife, from chipmunks to falcons. Picnic on the newly renovated visitor's center grounds. Visit the landmark Salish Lodge and make dinner or spa reservations.

of the north, south and middle forks of the Snoqualmie River and has had some great birds in recent summers. A Lazuli Bunting was spotted in 2011, and an Indigo Bunting was there in 2009).

Next, they’ll watch for woodland birds at Tolt-MacDonald Park in Carnation before heading back early in the afternoon. Dress for the weather and bring lunch and binoculars.

If you’d like to carpool, meet before 7 a.m. to form carpools at the Tibbets Valley Park parking lot on Newport Way in Issaquah. Carpool cost is $5 per passenger.

Go birdwatching in the Valley, with help from Audubon Society There they were, winging and diving above a secluded meadow—the first tree swallows of the season.

“It’s really nice to see the swallows,” says Andy McCormick, who’s come here with fellow Eastside Audubon members to show me the ropes of birdwatching.

Local birdwatchers, or birders for short, know that local parks hold secrets— living jewels like the Rufous hummingbird, and amazing sights like a merganser courting display—that anyone can discover with a little patience.

In the Valley, Three Forks Natural Area and Tolt-MacDonald Park are prime spots and very approachable for the beginning birdwatcher.

Washington Fish and Wildlife’s Stillwater Unit at milepost 8.9 on State Route 203 is good for spotting birds in spring-summer, as are the wooded areas on the approach to Rattlesnake Ridge near North Bend.

Wetlands and parks are stopping places for wrens, warblers, tanagers and orioles. Year-round, there’s a great variety to see, if you just open your eyes.

When Andy, president of Eastside Audubon, started watching birds in 1972, there were about half as many more of them to watch.

“Statistically, we know there were more,” he says. “Bird populations have dropped 40 percent since then.”

For someone interested in trying out birding, Eastside Audubon’s family bird walks are a great place to start.

Vintages of the Valley

Winemakers bring grapes over the mountains for surprisingly good local wines

ine lovers can sip a surprise find— award-winning wines—made in the Snoqualmie Valley.

The wine comes from here, but the grapes— not exactly. The best vineyards are over the mountains in Eastern Washington. Once harvested, they’re trucked here, then transformed into wines with a local accent but wide appeal.

Rockwell Brown Sigillo Cellars Traveling south, just a few minutes out of North Bend, is quaint Snoqualmie. On the banks of the river, opposite the site of the original timber mill in the old Meadowbrook neighborhood, is the Sigillo Cellars winery.

After a few years of making wine in home garages, Mike and Cande Seal found this neglected old building. They spent hours renovating while winemaker Steve Bailey experimented with barrels and grapes. The result is a fresh new open space, filled with the heady aroma of wine.

The Seals, too, get their grapes from Red Mountain in Benton City, producing a surprisingly varied selection of wines. Their reds include Bordeaux blends, Merlot and Cabernet.

Their Rhone varietals of Grenache and Syrah are extremely popular amongst Eastside restaurants.

At their wine club events the White chardonnay, Viogniers and Roussanne wines are also sought after. The wine tasting is worth investigating.

On weekends, for a small fee, you get six pours. If you like the wine, you may want to join the club. Membership has shot up in the last year

In North Bend, on a glorious property, you’ll find Rockwell Brown Wines. George Brown was introduced to Bordeaux wines in his teens and has been an ardent disciple ever since.

Having spent thousands of hours doing practical research, he now owns a vineyard on Red Mountain, in Eastern Washington. This is prime real estate for the beautiful grapes that make the brilliant Bordeaux-style wines. He brings them to the winery in North Bend and produces about 500 cases each year, of just one wine. This, he believes, is the secret. Just make one wine, and make it perfect. He is doing something right as Decanter Magazine has given him high praise and Rockwell Brown Wines was invited to the London International Wine Fair in May. It’s the only winery to receive this accolade from Washington state.

Pleasant Hill Cellars “Good to the Last Drop” is the name of the wine club for Pleasant Hill Cellars, established a dozen years ago in Carnation.

At an annual members-only open house, held on a late spring weekend, more than 500 people came to taste Larry and Birgit Lindvig’s wines.

Larry creates small batches of fewer than a hundred cases and consistently garners awards and medals. He believes that the freedom of the small batch gives him the opportunity to experiment with many different blends.

“We like to explore new territories and we like to take risks. That is why we have such a great following,” Larry says.

Seven of their wines medaled at the Seattle wine awards last year with several gold medals garnered. The first cellar to produce Malbec in Washington State, Larry is also flirting with Tempranillo and Tannat.

“We make wine to drink now,” says Birgit. One of her favorites is a super Tuscan, Donatella.

istory is just a short car trip away in the Snoqualmie Valley. Fall City, Carnation, Snoqualmie and North Bend still resound with tales of the pioneers, men and women who forged communities, clubs and industries in a rugged and beautiful place.

Today, the towns they trod are much changed, but reminders are still with us. Take a journey back in time with these eight sites.

1. Snoqualmie Falls From the overlook park, visitors can gaze across the mighty cascade at the final stages of a project to renew the power plant and park.

Under the surface is an entire underground power generation complex that, when built in the late 1800s, was a pioneering enterprise.

2. Meadowbrook Farm Few know that the Snoqualmie Valley was once a global center for the growing of hops, a vital ingredient in beer brewing. Much of that activity was centered on what is today called Meadowbrook Farm, 460 acres of scenic and public open space located between Boalch Avenue and Highway 202, midway between Snoqualmie and North Bend. By tradition the birthplace of the Snoqualmie Tribe, today the land is home to a natural interpretive center, trails, herds of elk and many special events.

In the summer, visitors can hike the meadows, spot wildlife, explore native forests and view activities such as plowing with vintage tractors.

Parking is available at the Interpretive Center building, 1711 Boalch Ave.; at Centennial Fields park; Snoqualmie Middle School, and in multiple graveled areas along Park Avenue in Snoqualmie and Boalch Avenue in North Bend.

2. Fall City Hop Shed Another legacy of the local hops industry is the Fall City Hop Shed, located at Fall City Park, just off the Highway 202 bridge. The shed is opened once a year to visitors during Fall City Days. The shed was built in 1888 by pioneer George Rutherford at a landing on the Snoqualmie River. Hops were one of the first big industries in King County, and Fall City was the shipping point. Kilns in the building dried the product. Riverboats would load the buds and go to Seattle, where their cargo would be loaded on clipper ships and sent to Europe. But by 1900, the fall in price for hops and an insect invasion brought an end to the industry. Now, the shed is one of the last reminders of the big hops era in Washington.

3. Fall City Totem Pole The painted cedar totem pole visible at Fall City Library, on Highway 202 in downtown Fall City, was carved in 1989 by Walt Williams of the Tulalip tribe. He copied the original, made in 1934 by Fall City resident H. H. Hinds.

Hinds drew his inspiration from the legends and carving traditions of the Northwest coast.

The Fall City pole depicts a Haida legend in which Raven, Flying Frog, and the Old Man of the Waterfall journey in a magical canoe to rescue Moon from the grasp of a selfish deity and assure moonlight for hunters.

4. Preston Clubhouse Sited on the Preston-Fall City Road just north of Preston, this landmark has not changed much since it was built from local cedar and stone in 1939.

The community hall was raised with labor from the Works Progress Administration, a federal agency that provided employment during the Great Depression. The Preston Community Club meets here.

5. Fall City Methodist Church Spot the historic steeple of this 1899 structure at the corner of Southeast 43rd Place.

The main portion of the building and the bell tower were built as a Baptist Church across from its present location. It was moved on log rollers to its present location in 1927 and expanded in 1954.

6. Sycamore Corridor Bike riders and leisure drivers know the place to go for a unique experience — the leafy views of the Reinig Road Sycamore Corridor.

The towering trees were planted circa 1925

by workers from the Snoqualmie Falls Lumber Company mill, who lived in houses along the road. Now vanished along with the rest of the company town of Snoqualmie Falls, the neighborhood of Riverside extended up to what is now 396th Drive.

Find the corridor by following Meadowbrook Way past Mount Si High School, across the Snoqualmie River, and follow the road right along Reinig Road.

7. Snoqualmie Depot The Northwest Railway Museum still brings passengers to the 120-year-old Snoqualmie Depot, a downtown landmark. The depot was constructed in 1890 by the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway and used by successor companies Seattle and International Railroad, Northern Pacific Railway, and the Burlington Northern Railroad. It is an unusually elaborate structure given the size of Snoqualmie in the 1890s, and managed to survive relatively intact until the railroad abandoned the line in 1975. Trains were the economic lifeline of the community for decades, opening up Snoqualmie to new possibilities. Before trains, people who lived in the Valley were pioneers. After the railroad, anyone could live here.

8. Carnation Farm / Camp Korey This large farm, located just outside of the city of Carnation, was once a worldrenowned dairy farm run by the Carnation Milk company. Today, the farm is a non-profit camp that helps sick children have fun, part of late actor Paul Newman’s Serious Fun camps. The camp includes hundreds of acres of pasture and farm buildings, as well as cabins for visiting children and families.

healthy community in unincorporated King County, Fall City is developing its reputation as a natural destination with a growing artistic sensibility. arnation is a rural community working to regrow its agricultural roots. The town was once known as Tolt, after the Snoqualmie word “Tolthue,” or river of swift waters, in use for thousands of years. In 1917, the town was renamed for the world-famous Carnation Dairy, which located here in 1910. The Valley became world-famous as the “Home for Contented Cows.” While the farm has moved on, Carnation is expanding its rural role as a center for local, artisan farmers and a thriving farmer’s market.

hen Gary Remlinger lost his primary strawberry buyer to the longer shelf life of California strawberries, he had to figure out what to do with over 100 acres of strawberries. Thinking quick, Remlinger advertised his first U-Pick.

Now when summer rolls around and the first berries of the season are ready to pick, the car lots fill up, their owners scouring the fields for the best berries. Remlinger has grown to include blueberries, raspberries and pumpkins at the U-Pick farm. Because the plants depend on the behavior of Mother Nature, make sure to look on the website, Facebook, or call the store to check the status of the U-Pick berries.

Remlinger’s website also has the seasons for produce that they sell in their market. The market opens the weekend of Mother’s Day and stays open until Thanksgiving Day, but they sell produce online during their off season.

Along with their fresh produce, the market also houses their famous frozen U-bake pies, local consignment gifts and crafts, and even a large herb and spice shop.

The amusement park opens for business on Mother’s Day weekend. Until June 24 and from September 4 until October 29, the park is closed on weekdays but from June 25 until September 3, the park is open every day until 4:30 p.m. There are over 25 rides made especially for children, including the Tolt River Railroad Steam Train Ride, a kid-size roller coaster and the flying pumpkin rides.

The park also features a farm theater with events by local songwriter and author Eric Ode, as well as Cyndi Soup, a singer and puppeteer.

History lessons Medieval ways come alive at Carnation’s Camlann Village

tep into another world one summer weekend by visiting Camlann Medieval Village, a living-history museum portraying 1376 England.

Tucked away between Carnation and Duvall, about four miles north of Carnation, Camlann treats visitors and field-tripping students to classes, demonstrations and optional lunches. Classes are open to the public—the 2013 class schedule is available on the Web. On weekends, Camlann hosts a plethora of demonstrations and events for a one-day visit, including medieval blacksmithing, animal care, spinning, clothing design and entertainment. Visit craft shops such as the Cidre Mille, which demonstrates apple crushing and pressing, or the Clothier Shoppe, which rents medieval clothing for your visit.

Villager William Elliot is a jack of all trades, working as an apprentice blacksmith and leather worker.

He also helps produce the cider in the fall—one goal of the village is to start producing their own mead.

14th-century food and drink The local restaurant, Le Bors Hede Inne, is open year-round, Tuesday through Sunday, by reservation.

Le Bors Hede serves medieval flavors—Fenberry Pye, Sanc Dragon, and Blamanger, a vegetarian meal of rice, chick peas, sugar, and spices—while minstrels sing and lute players strum. The 2013 banquets at Camlann include several summer feasts and Michaelmasse on September 28.

Michaelmasse celebrates the end of harvest, the traditional end of the farming year. The feast includes roast goose, a food eaten for good luck, and a selection of seasonal dishes.

Feasts and fun aside, villagers emphasize the educational value of a visit to Camlann. The village is run by a non-profit educational group, committed to “enrich the quality of our lives today, through a re-discovery ofthose traditional arts and values” and, among other goals, to make scholarly study available and relevant to the general public.

The next step in Camlann’s future is the construction of a carpentry shop, farmhouse dwelling, gatehouse and interpretive center, and an alehouse.

Camlann also invites reservations for private banquets for groups of 15 to 45. They welcome special occasions such as medieval weddings or holiday celebrations.

Run through the Valley

F

ew places offer as many great runs as the Snoqualmie Valley. With miles of trails and plenty of parks and nature preserves, there is something for everyone afoot.

Here, avid Snoqualmie runner and Run Snoqualmie race founder Sean Sundwall shares his top four runs in the Valley.

Snoqualmie Valley Trail This fantastic trail runs from Carnation to Spokane. The surface is mostly dirt on the 9.2 miles from Carnation to Tokul Road, and is well shaded for those warm summer days. Once runners reach Tokul Road, they can go around the old mill site for about two miles using Mill Pond Road, and rejoin the trail from the old railroad trestle on Meadowbrook Way. After runners cross the trestle, the trail is packed gravel and is perfectly flat for the next five miles, all the way to Interstate 90.

Once it crosses under the interstate, there is a gentle slope up to Rattlesnake Lake, about five miles. From there, runners can join the John Wayne Trail, which crosses Snoqualmie Pass and goes all the way to Spokane.

“What I love about this stretch is the soft surface, which is easy on the body, and the gorgeous scenery, which is easy on the eyes,” Sundwall said. “It’s 20-plus miles of soft surface trails, the prize running territory of the Valley.”

Snoqualmie Ridge Trail System The Snoqualmie Ridge community, above downtown, boasts nearly 20 miles of soft trails to run on, which provide a beautiful scenic backdrop for runners and access to lower Snoqualmie. Unlike the other trails in the Valley though, these trails are anything but flat. Just like the community which these trails run through, the Snoqualmie Ridge trail system is chock full of rolling hills and even a few monster hills for good measure.

Preston/Snoqualmie Trail This run is a bit of a hidden treasure, because it is not yet connected to the Snoqualmie Valley trail. There are four primary access points to this 5.5 mile. mostly-paved, mostlyflat trail, which starts at the new soccer fields in Preston and ends at a stunning viewpoint a half-mile from Snoqualmie Falls. Access points include the Preston soccer fields, Lake Alice Road, and two trailheads that provide access via the Snoqualmie Ridge trail system at either Tanner Jeans Park or Bandera park.

RUN FROM 37 Road Runs Runners who are training for road races of any length should look beyond simply running on soft trails. Fortunately, the Snoqualmie Valley is loaded with nice roads to run on, that see very little traffic and provide unmatched beauty.

Sundwall’s favorite and most recommended road run in the Valley is the Tokul/428thth loop.

The loop is 12 miles long, but can be cut down into smaller chunks using Tokul Road, Meadowbrook Way, Mill Pond Road, Reinig Road, Boalch Road, Park Street and 428th Avenue.

“What’s great about these roads is they see very little vehicle traffic and they allow the runner to see the most beautiful sites in the Valley, including the Snoqualmie River, Mount Si and Meadowbrook Farm,” Sundwall said. “If I were visiting the Valley and could run just once, I would do this route first.”
