Against all odds, the sun came out and welcomed athletes from seven schools to the annual Lopez-hosted track meet on April 16.

In this class you will learn such crucial survival tactics as finding water, building emergency shelters, distress signaling, making fire without matches, finding food, cultivating a positive mental attitude and navigation.

The class will comprise both lecture time and handson learning, getting lost and getting found and surviving in the wilds of Lopez in the middle.

Huntington will choose activities for the students to do such as building a solar still, finding North and making a survival kit.

Huntington was born and raised in Washington state and grew up enjoying its great outdoors, learning about its native geography, flora and fauna. Throughout his life he has enjoyed being an avid fisherman, hunter, gatherer of wild foods, hiker, alpine climber and an all-around nature lover.

In October 2012 he became a certified Wilderness First Responder and is now working toward a career in experiential education.

Hill featured in New York City exhibit

The New York City exhibition, The Manifestation of Milieu, will feature the artwork of Lopez Island artist Steven R. Hill. The exhibition is scheduled to run from June 4 through June 25. The opening reception will be held on Thursday night, June 6, from 6-8 p.m.

Electric car show and tell on Lopez

Ever wanted to try out one of those electric vehicles you’ve seen zipping around the island? You’ll have a chance on Saturday, May 18, at the Electric and Alternative Vehicle Show and Tell in the parking lot of Lopez Island Body and Fitness (the old supermarket lot). Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A variety of electric vehicles will be showcased in this mini-transportation fair, including cars, trucks and bicycles. One Lopezian will bring an electric car he built himself and another the e-bike he developed for his own use.

“The goal is to acquaint folks on the Island with the idea of electric vehicles and for them to be able to ask real owners about the pluses and minuses of ownership,” says organizer Mike Moore. “We’ll have handouts with information and online addresses and resources, too.”

Moore has long had concerns about the negative effect of internal combustion (gas- powered) engines on our environment.

‘GiveBig’ for Amigos

Amigos de Santa Cruz is participating in GiveBIG, the annual giving challenge created by The Seattle Foundation to support and encourage donations to nonprofits that are affiliated with the foundation.

The Seattle Foundation and local businesses will match a share of every contribution made through The Seattle Foundation’s online (http://www.seattlefoundation.org/) Giving Center between 7 a.m. and midnight on May15.

Natural History with Russel Barsh and Madrona Murphy Frogs and fungus Something is killing the world’s frogs and other amphibians, and some biologists regard the plague as the greatest ecological disaster since a small asteroid struck the earth roughly 65 million years ago – something thousands of times larger than the Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over south central Russia earlier this year.

The apparent cause of death is a species of chytrid fungus with the impossible name Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, first identified in 1998. Roughly one third of all species of frogs and salamanders worldwide have already been affected. Some suffered almost total mortality, while others survived periodic epidemics.

Chytrids are very ancient, at the base of the fungal and animal lineages, so they share some characteristics with protozoa and multicellular animals. They have gametes that swim, for example, just like sperm in animals. Chytrids tend to be parasites that live on other organisms. Most of the thousand known chytrid species live in fresh water, but some are marine, and others form mycelia in soil just like “modern” fungi.

Chytrids cause visible discolored skin lesions and scabs in amphibians, interfering with the animals’ ability to absorb oxygen and maintain water balance. Infected animals become disoriented, lethargic and do not avoid predators.

However, the rapid spread and unusually high mortality of the fungus suggests additional factors are involved that have stressed amphibians, compromised their immune systems, and made them more vulnerable to infection.

Reg-legged frog, Rana aurora, which is relatively rare in the county – our only native frog other than the more abundant (and noisy) chorus (or tree) frog. recently has grown more lethal. The disease was first observed as early as the 1970s and was recognized globally in the last 15 years, but may have existed earlier in a less virulent form.

It may have been spread by widespread laboratory use of the African clawed frog xenopus. Not only xenopus but American bullfrogs and tree/chorus frogs are relatively tolerant of the fungus and therefore can function as carriers.

Western Washington’s native amphibians have been declining rapidly over the last 25 years. Here in the islands, western toads have nearly disappeared, our two true salamanders are scarce, and red-legged frogs are reduced.

Only bullfrogs are thriving. It has been assumed that expanding bullfrog populations were eating their amphibious cousins into extinction in the islands, but the possibility of chytrid infection, possibly introduced by bullfrogs, has not been investigated.

islands’ amphibians. Toads and salamanders depend on a relatively small number of home ponds, like the maternity roosts of bats and spawning gravels of salmon. Loss of a home pond can result in loss of all toads or salamanders over an area of several square miles. By contrast chorus frogs, bullfrogs and rough-skinned newts are more widely dispersed and form much smaller reproductive groups.

Significantly, the amphibians that appear to be in most trouble in the islands are the ones that rely on a small number of home ponds, most notably the toads. Red-legged frogs form a middle category. They tend to be associated with moving water, and there are few perennial streams in the islands – fewer every year, as dams and ponds continue to reduce stream flows. But they form many small groups, even within a watershed.

Nothing is simple in ecosystems. Amphibians that rely on home ponds are more vulnerable to contagious diseases because they come together in much larger numbers—like cities. Those that reproduce in smaller groups or, like chorus frogs, individuals, are less likely to transmit contagious pathogens like Chytrids to other members of their own species, or other species that share the same bodies of water.

Kimura Parker’s special centenary performance of his new transcription of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” Parker’s transcription has just been recorded, and will be available in an autographed CD in time for the Lopez performance.

As artistic advisor and artistic director to the annual Festival, this husband and wife team brings the world’s top performers of chamber music to the islands each summer. Now based in Houston, Jon Kimura Parker is professor of Piano at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

A native of Vancouver B.C., Parker has performed as guest artist with the major orchestras and recital halls throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia. He is well remembered for his performance in war-torn Sarajevo following the Dayton Peace Agreement in 1995. Parker has given two command performances for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1999, which honors Canadians of outstanding merit.

Friedmann performs regularly with the Houston Grand Opera, and was Acting Concertmaster for its world premiere performances of Jake Heggie’s “The End of the Affair.”

In 2012 she was honored by Chamber Music

America for her role as founder of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.

Praised by the New York Times for her “fiery spirit” at her Carnegie Hall debut, Friedmann has played on stage with Dustin Hoffman in “The Merchant of Venice,” performed with the Soni Ventorum Quintet on the world premiere recording of William O. Smith’s Jazz Set for Violin and Wind Quintet, and played rock ‘n’roll alongside Metallica in Madison Square Garden.

Performing together, the couple promise an afternoon of technical excellence and thrilling emotional range prepared especially for the Lopez Island audience.

Parks’ volunteers help keep the land beautiful

Many people visit county parks on Lopez to enjoy the beaches, camp, have a barbecue with friends and family, or hike on the trails.

Fewer people regularly spend their free time improving the parks through volunteer service.

However, two Lopez residents stand out as volunteers extraordinaire: Carl Jones and Mike Higgins.

If you have visited Agate Beach County Park on the south end of Lopez, you may have seen Carl riding his bicycle to or from the site, mowing, pulling invasive weeds, or cleaning the renowned “Flower House” – so clean, colorful and wellmaintained that it defies the usual term “outhouse.”

Volunteer Linda Noreen says, “I often hear visitors call out to friends, ‘Come take a look and take a picture [of the Flower House].’”

Carl originally got involved with the parks as a member of the San Juan County Parks Board.

Now he says, “I prefer to do physical work and see what I accomplished. I have fun and really enjoy the work.”

He has been taking care of Agate for more than four years now, and he enjoys the positive feedback and the feeling of satisfaction that comes with doing his part to beautify the park. Carl is quick to point out that there is a group of neighbors who look after the park, including Linda, who enjoys chatting

with people as she picks up litter on the beach.

Carl says, “There is a feeling that Agate is a neighborhood park, so we all do our part to keep it beautiful.”

Mike has just started volunteering at Odlin Park, but he has a long relationship with Odlin.

Mike recalls,“My first trip to Lopez began at Odlin Park. I didn’t own a car, and I walked to Odlin from the ferry landing without much

effort. What a great park.

Now I enjoy giving back.”

In the past two months, Mike has assisted with three important projects at the park. He assisted with mixing and pouring concrete to install and stabilize a gate across the new group site area; he helped to put two barbecue grills up near the picnic shelter; and he participated in a three day trails workshop and assisted in building and installing a trail turnpike – a raised section of trail that helps hikers cross wet areas – along with 11 other volunteers.

Mike enjoys the sense of community that has grown around the park – multi-generational camping, baseball games, and community gatherings, and he looks forward to continuing his volunteer work in the coming years.

San Juan County Parks is currently looking to put together a team of dedicated volunteers on Lopez to help with various projects throughout the year.

Volunteers could become stewards at one of the county day parks such as Shark Reef, Blackie Brady Beach or Otis Perkins, or they could volunteer at Odlin Park.

Sara Waugh, assistant park manager at Odlin, says, “The work of volunteers is beneficial to the parks, but volunteers also gain experience, have fun, and see

the positive results of stewardship to our public lands.

Habitual Orcas offender appeals prison term An Orcas Island woman with extensive criminal history is contesting a five-year prison sentence handed down in the wake of recent convictions for felony burglary and misdemeanor theft.

On April 24, Terry Ann Meloni, 50, posted a $10,000 bond in San Juan County Superior Court as collateral for fulfilling terms of the sentence, which was slated to begin April 30, while the court-ordered penalties are under appeal.

The standard range of sentencing set by the state for the felony crime, given the extent of her criminal history, is 51-68 months in prison. She was credited with having served two days of the 60-month prison term.

He had worked as a commercial diver for about a year before the fatal accident.

The Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the two other men onboard the boat at about 10:35 a.m. The man was rescued from the water by fellow crew members, who started CPR and tried to revive him as the boat made a beeline for the boat ramp at Jackson’s Beach.

At the ramp, the boat was met by emergency responders, who were unable to resuscitate the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:13 a.m. The diver appears to have been appropriately equipped and alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the fatality. The circumstances and cause of the man’s death remain under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department and San Juan County Coroner.

Ruthie Foster, two-time grammy nominated artist, comes to the island on May 17, bringing with her a blend of soul, blues, rock, folk and gospel. the church choir and whatever was flowing out of the radio.

The sounds of George Jones and Loretta Lynn helped to shape Foster at a young age. And later when she got her hands on Beatles albums, she had what she calls a “truly awakening moment.” Per her grandmother’s instructions she started playing the piano and later started strumming guitar strings.

Now she dabbles in the harmonica and banjo in her

Austin music studio.

Her musical history has different roads from a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy Band to time in New York City music scene. Then she returned to her roots, bringing her sound to the Austin city stages and becoming a regular nominee at the Austin Music Awards. She has toured the world with her own band and recorded with big names such as Big Head Todd and Bonnie Raitt.

There are numerous perks to watching Ruthie Foster perform. Two highlights are her bright smile and powerhouse voice that shakes not only the walls of any room, but moves your soul.

“The power of what music can do is it can lift you up and make you not feel alone,” she said. “I know what music does for me … hearing that voice or that song hits an optic nerve and moves you … it motivates you.”

The two-time grammy nominated artist is bringing her soulful sounds to Lopez on Friday, May 17, 7:30 p.m.

This concert is made possible in part by the Western States Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

This will be Foster’s first tour on the islands, performing on Friday Harbor on Saturday and Orcas on Sunday night.

“I’m so excited about being there,” she said. “Everyone who comes bring someone because you’re gonna have a ‘hallelujah’ time.”

Foster’s music is a blend of soul, blues, rock, folk and gospel.

“Her voice has a Bonnie Raitt-like uniqueness that makes it impossible to ignore; and her smile and charismatic stage presence make you a willing participant in whatever story she wants to weave,” said an article in Blues Revue magazine.

Her sultry version of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” makes you feel like you are hearing this well-known tune for the first time.

“I try to take a song and put my stamp on it,” she said.

Covers like Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” were a leap of faith for Foster.

“We weren’t sure if it would work,” she said. “ I was really stepping out there.”

The result is an intense and rich creation, which gives the song a new breath of life.

Foster also likes to have the freedom to make each concert dynamic and alive.

Each new performance comes with a well-thought out set list, but Foster said

she rarely follows that piece of paper. Instead she feels the energy of the crowd and follows that direction.

“I really like every opportunity not to just give a concert, but to express myself in a different way,” Foster said.
