Dear reader, It’s here! It’s here! Spring in the Northwest.

If you didn’t catch it in my last column, I’ll reiterate: Spring is my favorite time in Washington. Blue skies?

Sunshine? A slight breeze? Yes, please! It’s magic.

For this issue of The Scene, we’re talking about a variety of things you can do around the Eastside this spring: Looking for something to help you work on that beach bod? The Briora Ballroom in Redmond is open for business – and they’ve got all sorts of fitness and dance classes to get you in shape.

If you’re looking for something to entertain you, we’ve got that too: Comedian April Macie will be at the Parlor Live Comedy Club this month – and from what we’ve heard, her jokes are just as fiery as her ginger mop!

Hot dogs serve up fun, funds for Camp Korey

I

t’s wasn’t your typical fundraiser luncheon at the Bellevue Hilton on March 14. The menu consisted of hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, and of course, s’mores for dessert.

But this was to support Camp Korey, which provides experiences for kids with serious medical conditions.

And the enthusiastic supporters responded by raising $189,000 for the organization.

Henry, who attended two summer sessions for kids with Mitochondrial disease, performed a few of his favorite magic tricks with Camp Korey’s Assistant Director Scotty Stevens. Christopher, who attended four summer sessions and enjoys making people laugh,

Suzan Chavez, Nancy Koefoed, and event Chair Rachael Podolsky. showcased his stand-up comedy routine that he performs during Stage Night at Camp Korey. He also shared, “I feel like I’m at home at camp because everyone cares about me and no one judges me for being different.” Other guests included funnyman Pat Cashman along with Emcee Steve Pool.

Every year Camp Korey, located just outside historic Carnation, provides thousands of children and their families from the Northwest a humorous and memorable campers experience – free of charge.

The camp was founded in 2005 by Tim Rose in honor of his son, Korey Rose, who lost his battle to cancer.

Briora Ballroom offers fun, fitness and finesse through dance

BY KEEGAN PROSSER Ballroom dancing is a spectacle to watch. There’s romance and glitter. Fancy shoes and elegant choreography. Flowing dresses gliding gracefully across the floor. And while the spectacle is often restricted to our television screens, a bit of the sparkle can now be found in Redmond - at Briora Ballroom.

Opened in January by professional dancer Jessica McMorrow, the 6,500-plus square foot facility - which features two dance floors, a lounge area and retail shop - is already being praised as one of the best studios in the country. Last month, McMorrow, along with friends, family and students, celebrated their public debut, with a special gala hosted by Jonathan Roberts of “Dancing With The Stars.”

Raised in Kirkland, McMorrow got her first taste of dance at age seven, when her mom signed her up for a ballet class.

“She thought it was something nice for little girls to do,” McMorrow says.

But it was much later, during a semester abroad in college, McMorrow discovered her true passion: ballroom dance.

“I was completely inspired,” McMorrow says about watching her first professional competition. “I was like, this is so cool.”

Now that ‘nice activity’ has become a full-time gig.

McMorrow says the idea to start her own studio came about in a discussion with her partner Slava Stefanov, whom she met while dancing in California in 2010. At the time, they were both working as independent teachers, conducting lessons in rented studios.

“It came to a point where I could no longer serve the needs of my clients,” McMorrow says.

She felt opening a studio would give her the opportunity to build community among her dancers. And returning home to open the studio just made sense.

“My family is up here, and when I settled more permanently I wanted to be near them,” McMorrow says.

With support from Stefanov and her father, an entrepreneur and business owner, McMorrow’s dream of building a state-of-the-art studio started to take shape.

“I thought there was a place for a really beautiful, elegant ballroom [on the Eastside],” she says.

McMorrow says she’s danced in studios where she was trying on a $5,000 ball gown in a bathroom. That’s not fitting of the beauty and elegance of ballroom dancing, she says. As such, she wanted to provide a space worthy of her customers time and money.

“Ballroom dance is a really beautiful thing,” McMorrow says. “It’s nice that the space can reflect that.”

This idea is embodied at Briora Ballroom.

Outlook: bright and sunny

hecking the weather forecast is not part of my daily routine. I know what to expect.

Just like my default plan for Seattle weather –layers, layers, layers – my own personal outlook has a default setting that is consistent, predictable and for the most part, safely reliable for the people I encounter each day.

This hasn't always been the case. I cringe when I think back to my early days working at Nordstrom. My daily prep included too much makeup, a fashion forward costume and a HEIJA NUNN sourpuss look on my face – because I thought it would help make me look mature and serious and not 18 years old. I wasn't fooling anyone and I looked ridiculous.

Each day I passed a man, who was either homeless or stuck in a loitering rut in the alley between my apartment and the bus stop. I ignored him as I stomped by in my high heels, pursed lips and pale pink wool Calvin Klein overcoat. But despite my best efforts to suffocate him with

clouds of Avon's Imari perfume, he still managed to make consistent fun of my Miss Serious face. He tried his best to turn my frown upside down; "Smile, baby!" "Ah honey, what's wrong?" "It's a beautiful day, be happy!" "Just smile!

It’ll be okay!"

He was relentless. And he was totally right. I finally stopped fighting my personal atmospheric tendencies and allowed myself to smile and answer "peachy' or "d-e-lightful” when someone asked how I was.

Our recent last minute trip to California reminded me again how much our expectations and point-of-view impacts our experiences.

At the end of a long and fruitless shopping adventure in search of summer garb, a very grumpy Sweetie-Boy met Joanna, a salesperson in The Rail at the Bellevue Nordstrom whose optimism, humor, efficiency and willingness to protect him from the world's harshest critics – his siblings – won his undying loyalty.

Venom Pen was unable to resurrect his new iPod Nano after its second trip through the wash. He was prepared to fork over birthday and Xmas dollars to buy his own replacement, but after some very positive interactions with employees at the Bellevue and University Village Apple stores he was surprised and delighted to leave for vacation with his personal funds intact, thanks to Apple's stated

goal to "surprise and delight our customers."

Late Wednesday evening, Sistafoo danced with excitement as we stood in line to check into the Disneyland Hotel. When it was our turn, her enthusiasm transformed into thrilled amazement as the suddenly shy Sistafoo was escorted around the counter, assigned a Jr. Cast Member Badge and allowed to use the computer to check-in our family. When she was done she received a thank you card, a personalized badge and a memory to last a lifetime, all because she didn't try to hide her enthusiasm behind a faux mask of stoicism.

Throughout our trip to Disney and beyond, we encountered person after person determined to make the world a sunnier place – from advice from strangers and employees on where to eat, what to do, where to stand for the best view to subtle nods and gentle persuasion to help avoid expensive mistakes.

As hard as it is sometimes to endure foul weather, tolerate foul personalities, or conquer foul circumstances, I try to remember that the most important forecast is the one we predict for ourselves, so I think I will keep planning for the same outlook, the same forecast, regardless of where I live, or where I visit: Sunny with a chance of surprise and delight.

Eastside boasts a variety of venues for underage crowds

Punk-rock statesman Ian MacKaye once said in an interview about young musicians, “I feel like right now while we’re talking, there’s some kids, if they’re not already playing it, they’re cookin’ it up — it’s comin’, can’t be stopped.”

Old Fire House Teen Center Program Coordinator Rana Shmait wholeheartedly agrees with the former Fugazi and Minor Threat leader’s comment when discussing the Redmond venue that has been home to all-ages concerts since 1992.

Shmait attended her first gig at the Fire House in 1997 when The Blood Brothers, Red Rocket and others took the stage in the 250-person capacity main room. She was 15 then and wide-eyed when she entered the music hot spot.

“I couldn’t believe that it was here. That’s the same thing teens still share with me,” says the class of 2000 Redmond High graduate who’s now 31. “It was so close to home.

And what remains the same is that the staff made me feel welcome, it was very inclusive.”

Mudhoney, Modest Mouse, Gossip and Minus the Bear are some of the bigger bands that have rocked the Fire House over the years; Fugazi was scheduled to play there in 1993, but venue founder Kate Becker moved the gig to the Bellevue YMCA and it drew 1,100 fans.

The Fire House, which hosts two to three concerts a month, also features a 16-track recording studio and a Pro Tools system.

Shmait says the musicians performing at the Fire House these days are just as charged about putting on a solid show as bands in the past.

“I want this to be a space for young people to share their talent and be appreciated and be empowered,” she says of the bands of all genres, vocalists, dancers and poets who perform at the Fire House.

“I refer to it as vibrant and driving,” she adds.

Events for May include the Laugh On! teen comedy night (7 p.m. on May 10), bands Harlow, Scinite and guests (7 p.m. on May 17) and the Whose Crime is it Anyways? murder mystery dinner (6 p.m. on May 31). The Fire House, located at 16510 N.E. 79th St., also holds a variety of classes from academic enrichment to fashion design.

Club K Town

Remember in high school when you had to stand so many inches away from your dance partner or be publically shamed with timeout in the corner? Club K Town offers a teen friendly dance club, while promising adult supervision. Theme nights include “Thrift Party” and Freestyle Friday, and the space rivals some 21+ clubs with four pool tables, a stage, waterfront deck and a 20,000 watt sound system.

Ground Zero

Featuring touring bands nearly every Friday, the Ground Zero Concert Series offers both concerts and a practice space for budding musicians. Service director Lance Latimer recalls that when Ground Zero launched 20 years ago, the then music venue noticed that kids stuck around even after the show ended.

“All of a sudden kids started hanging out outside of the venue, and during the week. [We realized] we needed to do programming after school, drop-in services plus the venue.”

Thanks to that collaborative spirit, teens learn the ropes of the musical world with a chance to book shows, practice promotion and take their first wobbly steps into the Eastside music scene. Latimer adds the all-ages nature of the space has created incredible mentorship opportunities.

“Kids can interact with adult bands, use that as a step-

ping stone and gain knowledge,” says Latimer.

Shows start at 7 p.m. and cost just $6 with a can of food.

YMCA (KTUB)

Kirkland Teen Union Building, better known as KTUB to Eastside youth, offers concerts, open mic nights and cafe shows for aspiring, young entertainers to cut their teeth. A practical set of workshops rounds out the event calendar with classes ranging from career coaching to long board construction.

Youth Eastside Services 999 164th Ave NE, Bellevue

Youth Eastside Services might be better known for its altruistic mission, offering an extended hand to kids struggling with emotional distress, substance abuse and violence in their lives, but the center also offers a host of classes and support groups forthe younger age bracket.

Join others who share in the experience, whether it be navigating recovery or exiting an abusive relationship.

Youth Eastside Services has services at 40 different sites throughout the community.

All eyes on the birds Spring is the big season for Eastside birders

BY SETH TRUSCOTT There they were, winging and diving above a secluded meadow at Lake Sammamish State Park — the first tree swallows of the season.

“It’s really nice to see the swallows,” says Andy McCormick, who’s come here with fellow Eastside Audubon members to show me the ropes of birdwatching. “It’s a sure sign of spring.”

Local birdwatchers, or birders for short, know that places like this Eastside park hold secrets — living jewels like the Rufous hummingbird, and amazing sights like a merganser courting display — that anyone can discover with a little patience.

With spring here, it’s prime season for birding on the Eastside. Right now, winter birds still linger, but spring migrants like hummingbirds or tree swallows are just arriving from South America.

Wetlands and parks are stopping places for wrens, warblers, tanagers and orioles.

How to get started in birding This month is a great time to get started as a birder, and Eastside Audubon makes it easy.

May is the club’s major Birdathon campaign. Lots of special events are planned, including: • International Migratory Bird Day Celebration: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Juanita Bay Park, 2201 Market St., Kirkland. Welcome winged spring visitors with nature walks and children’s activities.

Off the beaten path

It was a brand new camera that got Bellevue resident Amit Kulkarni started in birding.

“I went out taking pictures of birds,” he says. “Then I had to figure out what they were.” His first bird was a robin. It was unlike any bird he’d seen in his native city of Mumbai.

Every week, Amit hits a park or greenbelt before work to spot the birds.

“I wouldn’t do it if I wasn’t birding,” he says,” “It’s a good change from being at your desk,” adds Andy. “You get to experience nature, hear birdsong. Birdwatching takes you to places many people never go…. You get a little off the beaten path.”

Two years into the hobby, Amit often brings his 4-year-old nephew, Kabir, along.

“He is always with us,” says Priya Chavan, Amit’s wife. “We really believe that if we get him into it now, he will be interested as an adult. This is a good chance to get him involved, and make him feel good at it.”

Saving local habitat

A minute out of the parking lot, Amit and Andy are spotting birds left and right.

It’s a busy life for a bird, says Andy.

“Migrants travel thousands of miles,” he says. “They have to fight bad weather, avoid predators, constantly look for food, support a nest.”

When Andy, president of Eastside Audubon, started watching birds in 1972, there were about half as many more of them to watch.

In birding lingo, a bust is called “dipping.”

“You never have a day when you see no birds,” says Audubon member Mary Brisson. “But if you don’t find the species you’re looking for, you say you ‘Dipped on the Rufous,’” to use my hummingbird as an example.

There’s little competition to birding.

Andy puts it succinctly: “We want everybody to see the birds,” he says.

Field guides and books have their uses, Mary says, but “If you’re with somebody who points out that detail in the field, you know it forever.”

This morning, with Andy and Amit, Mary listens to a Pacific wren calling in a close-by tree.

“I’ve never heard one singing that close for so long,” she says. “I’ll never forget it.”

The Seattle-based chanteuse, dancer and all around-entertainer, has been been performing and touring with her family’s vaudeville troupe, The Royal Famille DuCaniveaux, since she was 2. That’s why Bailey respects her nail artist, Jan Bailey (no relation) at Shanti Salon, as just that: an artist.

“I think my nails say that I pay attention to detail. I grab at any and every opportunity to express myself,” says Caela, who gets acrylic nail enhancements with a variety of designs put on top of her real nails. Sometimes, there’s even tiny jewels or gold studs.

Looking through Caela’s Instagram feed, @misscaela206, one would find many portraits of her fingertips: perfectly uniform “stiletto nails” in one, a menagerie of wild colors, shapes, patterns and adornments in another.

“Ten new pieces of original art now showing on my hands,” the caption reads.

In recent years, nails have become a trendy fashion canvas, says Seattle style expert, Alix Rose (read her blog at: www.alixrose.com). It gives ladies a chance to have a little fun without the commitment of hair dye or a tattoo.

Nude nails were popular on the spring runways of heavyweights such as Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. But designers including Nicole Miller and Vivienne Westwood showed off their latest collections with models sporting two-tone manicures and metallic varnishes.

“Getting your nails done isn’t just for an occasion anymore, it’s become part of the routine,” says Rose, who visits the salon every two weeks.

However, one need not visit the salon to get the look. Rose recommends getting in some “me” time by investing in a bottle of OPI for their variety of colors and funny names (“Blushingham Palace,” “Pink-ing of You” “Eiffel for this Color” “Ladies and Magenta-Men” “Melon of Troy” etc.)

Tequila worth your time STORY AND PHOTO BY KEEGAN PROSSER Federico and Julian Ramos know a lot about tequila.

Which makes sense - as the brothers were and raised in Jalisco, Mexico.

You see, like Champagne is to the city in France, tequila can only be called such if it’s made in the state of Jalisco. That’s why the liquor is at the heart of Agave Cocina - the pair of restaurants owned by the Ramos brothers in Issaquah and Redmond.

Each of the Agave locations offers close to 150 different types of tequila - all of which are 100 percent agave tequilas (no other alcohol has been added).

Federico says there are three main categories when talking about tequila: silver (un-aged), reposado (aged for a minimum of two months) and añejo (aged for at least a year); a sub-category, extra añejo tequilas are aged for 10 or 12 years.

Federico says tastes can vary depending on different factors: the type or age of the agave plant, what type of barrel the tequila is aged in and the age itself.

He says the sweeter, more oak-y flavor of añejos and extra añejos tends to be a favorite in the Northwest; these tequilas are more expensive because the process is longer.

Like the Agave restaurants, Matador restaurant in Redmond has a wide selection of tequila - approximately 117 varieties. Manager Luke Poysnick says their tequila

options - including Don Julio, Casa Noble and Herradurra (which are also offered at Agave) - span all tequila categories.

While the majority of Matador’s offerings are 100 percent agave tequilas, Poysnick says some of them are not.

Despite the variety, both Federico and Poysnick admit most customers ask for familiar brands - like Patrón.

“A lot of people tend to go for the Patrón because it’s very well marketed,” Federico says. “But we try to drive people in different directions, as far as trying new and different tequilas.”

The mission at Matador is the same.

Family serves up authentic Italian cuisine - in Issaquah

STORY AND PHOTO BY LINDA BALL Giovanni Nardone is a long way from his hometown of Caserta, in the Campania region of Italy. Now a resident of Bellevue, he worked for a food company in Canada and is the founder and CEO of Nardone Wine and Food, which imports fine wine and food to his warehouse in Kent. A trained chef — as is his wife Michelina - he couldn't find anywhere in the Seattle or Bellevue area to get fresh, authentic Italian food. So he convinced his son Fernando Nardone, with his wife Cindy, to open a restaurant he could eat at, or else he was going back to Italy.

The result is Montalcino in Issaquah - not to be confused with the town of the same name in Tuscany. Montalcino is a lovely village known for its Brunello di Montalcino wines, made exclusively from the Sangiovese grape.

"Dad will come here and eat after leaving the warehouse in Kent," Fernando says.

"Mom sings opera quite well, and sings to the customers."

With a vineyard in Montalcino, the Nardone family produces an excellent Brunello along with other vintages. So how does an Italian family end up with a restaurant in Issaquah?

Fernando says they came to support their newest distributor, Click Wholesale. The winery is just a small part of the family business; they are the exclusive importer of over 2,000 Italian wines.

"This is a new market for us," he says.

Montalcino has been open for a year and a half, and has gained a following for its authenticity. The chef, Davide, trained with Michelina, learning her recipes. There is a test kitchen at the Kent warehouse, where they taste the food they import, and experiment with recipes.

Everything that is prepared at Montalcino is fresh. The only freezer is for ice.

The Nardone family serves up authentic Italian cuisine at Montalcino in Issaquah.

"That's how mom grew up — they went to the market every day," Fernando says.

Fernando supports using organic food, although it costs more, because he is conscious of his customer's health.

Antipasti, or starters, include bruschetta with fine cured Italian meats and cheeses, and several salads including caprese, for which he uses only fresh buffalo mozzarella flown in from Italy, and heirloom tomatoes.

Buffalo mozzarella is made from the cream of the buffalo, creamy and delicious.

"Buffalo is a tough thing — if it's not fresh, we don't serve it," Fernando says.

Pasta dishes include gnocchi, pasta el pesto with funghi (mushrooms), lobster ravioli, wild boar pappardelle and pasta gorgonzola. Michelina's lasagna is one of the signature dishes along with sea bass when it's in season, served lightly grilled in a light sauce.

"A lot of people who've been to Italy come here because they're better educated (about Italian food)," Fernando says. Also on the menu is the bisteca - a 24 ounce porterhouse steak, or wild boar sourced from farms in Oregon and Eastern Washington, for meat lovers.

Then, top off the meal with Michelina's award-winning tiramisu with a fresh Americano.

Even at $87 a bottle, the Nardone Brunello di Montalcino Poggio is the most popular wine on the almost all exclusively Italian wine list. Poggio means "hill," reflecting the name of the vineyard, Nardone, which sits on a hill in Tuscany.

And "if you must drink non-Italian" there is a Napa Merlot on the wine list; Giovanni goes over to Napa each year to make the wine.

Montalcino is a great date restaurant since it is small and intimate. But with a capacity of just 39 people, reservations are definitely recommended.

Fernando says they fill up most evenings. He has hosted people from all over the Puget Sound area, including Bill Gates, Paul Allen, some of the Seahawks, and even Justin Timberlake. Montalcino has been rated the number one restaurant in Issaquah among several local food reviewers. Fernando and Cindy, with their children Fabiano, and daughter, also named Michelina, live in Issaquah.

"We love it here - there was just a restaurant problem, but we solved that," Fernando says.

Montalcino is is located at 15 N.W. Alder Place in Issaquah and is open Monday through Friday for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner every night beginning at 5 p.m.

April Macie is not promiscuous. Spicy? Sure. Fiery?

You betchya. Scandalous? No. But her jokes might be.

“I was that girl in high school who had rumors spread about me,” Macie says.

That’s why the busty red head has made it her life’s goal to ensure other women don’t feel the same way, battling stereotypes one dirty joke at a time.

Known for her risqué jokes, Macie got her big break as a contestant on Season 4 of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” - where she gained notoriety for being the “hot, funny” one. The schtick landed her a recurring role on the Howard Stern and Bob and Tom radio shows.

Macie’s other accolades include appearances on E! Entertainment, Fuel TV, HSN and Access Hollywood. She’s also participated in a number of Showtime specials, and will host the network’s AVN awards this month.

You see - Macie’s not shy talking about sex. In fact, it’s kind of what she does.

“You shouldn’t be ashamed of sex,” Macie explains.

“You should be ashamed of playing badminton - that’s weird.”

scene: How long have you been doing stand-up?

April Macie: I wanna say it’s coming up on 12 years. But it’s been my living for like seven years. scene: How did you get started?

AM: I have a slightly dysfunctional family - so I think a lot of it came from that. Like, my mom is the type of person who will throw back a 30-pack of Keystone and paint pictures of Michael Bolton in the basement.

scene: What’s your favorite thing about doing standup?

AM: I think people have enough crappy stuff happening in their lives. So if you can make people laugh and forget what’s going on in their life, I think that’s a great gift. And there is is always free booze at the club - which is a plus. scene: If you had to describe your act in two words, what would they be?

AM: Dirty animal. No - I always say I hope to empower women one wiener joke at a time - which is more than two words.

AM: When you do stand-up, sex is the only thing in the room that everybody does. scene: I see you have red hair (like me!) Can you give us some insight on your fiery locks?

AM: My natural hair color is blonde. Sometimes, when a relationship is going crappy, I’ll try to go back to blonde - like being a blonde will make my relationship less crappy. But it’s still the same crappy relationship. To me, red reads funnier. And there aren’t as many of us, especially in L.A., where everyone is blonde. We’re like unicorns. scene: Last year you participated in “Snoop Dogg Presents: The Bad Girls of Comedy.” How did that gig come about?

AM: I had done a few things on Showtime and one of the [executives] recommended me. Also, I think they needed the token white broad. scene: How was working with Snoop?

AM: He was really nice - he kept calling me Strawberry Shortcake. I felt like, “Hey, I’ve made it. I got a nickname from Snoop.” scene: What can people expect from your set?

scene: Why is it important to you to empower women?

AM: I think the fact that sex is demonized in our society is ridiculous. Like “Law and Order: SVU” is a rape show. It’s like, so you can show sex on TV if it’s against her will?

AM: They can expect a lot of relatable stuff about dating, relationships and sex - and dysfunctional families.

Well, I guess the dysfunctional family stuff might not be as relatable - unless they have a mom who paints pictures of Michael Bolton too.

scene: Can you expand on that a bit?

AM: I grew up with my mom being called a slut her
