City sells First Hill land to developer

Registration for students to take part in Mercer Island’s annual VOICE and SVP programs begins on Wednesday, March 27.

Students in sixth and seventh grade can join the SVP program, while VOICE is open to 8th through 11th-grade students who want to participate in volunteer projects throughout the summer.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and closes on April 24.

2013 Rotary Run brings out thousands

The 41st annual Mercer Island Rotary Half Marathon was held on Sunday, March 24, under cold but sunny skies. Approximately 3,265 racers participated in the event, featuring the annual half marathon, 10k and 5k along with the Kids’ Dash.

One of the biggest events each year on the Island went off without a hitch, drawing a record crowd to the 5k run/walk.

Dawn Naye, the event’s chair, said this year just over 4,000 registered for the event.

“It was a great year,” said Naye.

“A little cold, but there was a great vibe.”

She added that more people picked up race packets on Saturday, likely because of the new partnership with Sound Transit, allowing for free rides if racers showed their bibs.

The half marathon race continued to be the main event with 1,560 runners showing up, while the half marathon walk had 218 participants. In the 10k event, 563 racers came out, while a record 924 raced in the 5k.

A total of 496 Mercer Island residents took part in the annual event. One hundred and forty

Islanders ran the half marathon, while 31 walked around the Island. Another 70 took part in the 10k, while a total of 255 raced in the 5k.

In the half marathon run, Uli Steidl won the event, finishing in 1:08.24 with a 5:13 mile pace time.

Keegan Symmes finished in second in 1:10.29 with a 5:23 pace time. Joshua Richari was third in 1:12.46, Gabriel Kliot was fourth in 1:16.18 and Cameron Butler was fifth in 1:17.15.

The top women’s finisher in the half marathon was Kimberly Pancoast in 1:20.48, followed by Trisha Steidl in 1:26.10. Bess McKinney was third in 1:26.40, Karra Whitmire was fourth in 1:26.52 and Somer Kreisman was fifth in 1:27.44.

A total of 496 Mercer Island residents took part in the annual event.

VOICE registration opens today

With a vote of 5 to 0, the Mercer Island City Council sold the vacant property at the corner of S.E. 32nd Street and 74th Avenue S.E. to a local developer for $1.9 million.

The land, owned by the city’s water utility, was declared surplus in 2009. The land, first acquired before the city was formally incorporated in 1970, was purchased to be used as the location of a water storage facility.

Clibborn answers questions about role in tolling I-90

Rep. Judy Clibborn wants Islanders to know that she is on their side.

She sat down with the Reporter on a Sunday afternoon to respond to statements made about her role in determining the use of I-90 tolls to pay for SR-520. Clibborn is the chair of the House Transportation Committee of the Washington state Legislature.

There is an oft-quoted statement by Clibborn, who said in 2009, that “tolling was off the table for Mercer Island.” That statement was made Clibborn said, in regards to the use of funds to repay the bonds that were purchased in 2009 for SR-520, and only in an emergency “if all other sources were insufficient to repay the bonds.”

Did you go ‘back on your word’ when you said that tolling would not be considered for I-90?

Clibborn does not deny that she said Islanders would object to pay for a bridge that they did not use, but she said it was a “situational comment regarding the need to solidify funding for the (SR-520) bridge.”

“Having to toll I-90 was considered a last resort,” she explained. “The belief was that it was something that would not be needed.”

In order to sell bonds for the amount needed to rebuild the bridge, the Legislature had to secure the bonds with three different revenue streams, she said. The bridge was to be funded primarily by gas tax revenues, some govern-

ment and federal sources and from the sale of bonds.

The last of those sources was to be tolling I-90 if the funds from those sources was not adequate.

But now, some four years later, everything is gone except the gas tax, she said.

There is very little, if any, federal dollars for these roads.

Why is just I-90 being considered for tolling? What about I-5 or even I-405?

Clibborn wants people to understand that tolling regionwide is coming.

“These plans have been in the works for some time,” she said.

The Legislature has authorized tolling for all of I-405 from Lynnwood south to the SR-167 extension. Tolls on I-5 are under consideration. Tolls for the SR-99 tunnel under Seattle are also authorized. The Columbia River bridge is also to be tolled.

What about tolling the western access to the SR-520 bridge in Montlake? Why isn’t that being considered?

As for tolling the approach to Montlake, Clibborn said she was not sure how much more money that would collect and that the approach is not really considered a part of the bridge. However, she said that, too, could be considered in an EIS as an option or additional source of funding.

“All of these items can be considered in the EIS,” she said. “You ask the questions. And those questions help determine how the impact of tolling can be mitigated.”

Why wasn’t there any money in the $10 billiontransportation package proposed for the session?

“My job is to provide funding for transportation statewide,” she said. There is a long list of projects that are unfunded and roadways in need of repair.

Of the statewide transportation funding package before the Legislature, Clibborn said it has been already whittled down substantially. “It is not $10 billion any longer,” she said.

Again, she said, everything else is gone except the gas tax, and possibly weight fees for trucks.

will remember is that there will be different tolls for different times of day. That tolling and how it is finally implemented will take time — maybe years.

“We can prolong or delay it,” she said of tolling, “but we cannot stop it.”

Mercer Island police take the plunge for Special Olympics

Nine members of the Mercer Island Police Department jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Sammamish during the Special Olympics Polar Plunge on Sunday, March 17.

The MIPD participated in the event for the

first time this year, joining the Redmond Police Department and Special Olympic athletes for the plunge and raising more than $25,000 for Special Olympics.

awmakers got some good news on Wednesday as state revenue was projected to be $40 million higher than anticipated over the next two years.

While that’s something to cheer about, the Legislature still faces a $1.3 billion shortfall. Even worse, the state Supreme Court is requiring the state to increase education funding by $500 million to $1.7 billion over the next two years.

That means even with an additional $40 million, there won’t be enough money to meet everyone’s wants and needs. And raising taxes won’t be an option, either. Republicans are against it and Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, campaigned saying he wouldn’t approve tax increases.

Bottom line: it’s going to take a bunch of cuts — and then more cuts — to balance the budget.

As the Legislature moves forward in this final month of the regular session, it needs to see its task as more than a numbers game. In reality, lawmakers face a moral decision.

Where should the state’s limited resources go?

We think lawmakers need to look first to the poor and medically fragile.

Without state help, they truly have nothing.

The need stretches across our state. The poor are students, the unemployed, the disabled and the old. Even without tolls, they cannot afford to go to the dentist, ride the bus to work or feed their families.

More money for higher education also is a critical need. The increases in tuition at our state colleges and universities have priced many — even in the middle class — out of a chance to further their education.

Ignoring this will impact our state far into the future.

Any money for transportation projects will likely not come from this windfall. And it is too little to eliminate or reduce tolling fees.

We know state workers have concerns over wages and benefits. Believe us when we say that private industry has felt their pain. But given low funds and high needs, lawmakers must first help those who can’t help themselves.

Toll comparison not valid in ‘car-centric’ community The Reporter’s recent update (March 6) on I-90 tolling could benefit from better math. The front page headline declares, “Plan to fight tolls will cost big bucks,” and the story cites the city’s $150,000 (if not more) in anticipated legal fees.

In a separate story, the Reporter notes the rough equivalence between WSDOT’s proposed tolls for I-90 and what, after adjusting for inflation, people paid a half-century ago to cross Lake Washington bridges.

Perhaps the Reporter’s implicit message is that the toll levels being discussed by WSDOT today actually aren’t too bad by historical standards?

The Reporter has it exactly backwards. Spread across the Island’s 10,000 households, the anticipated $150,000 for a legal defense fund is cheap. Fifteen dollars per household is downright trivial — especially given the end goal of preventing the

March 10 Arrest: The King County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 47-year-old Mercer Island man at 6:52 p.m. and booked him into the Issaquah City Jail.

March 11 Mailbox vandalism: In a case

of malicious mischief, mailboxes were lifted off of their posts in the 3900 block of 86th Avenue S.E. One was damaged, according to the police report. Street signs in the same block were also pulled out of the ground.

March 14 Malicious mischief: Graffiti

was sprayed onto the eastbound I-90 wall in the 9100 block, below Shorewood Heights, sometime in the

late morning.

Burglary: Jewelry was stolen out of a home in the 8000 block of S.E. 45th Street, in the neighborhood north of the Congregational Church, sometime between 12:50 and 5:40 p.m. Stolen jewelry included a gold Rolex wristwatch. There was no evidence of any forced entry. Police found human feces at the scene, near the ground floor doorway outside of the stairwell, and took a sample into evidence.

March 15 Tires slashed: A 42-year-old woman’s ex-boyfriend is suspected of slashing and flattening two tires of her Honda Civic sometime overnight, the second incident in a month. One witness was present.

Arrest: Police booked a 21-year-old man into the Issaquah Jail on a $2,500 misdemeanor warrant at 1:28 p.m.

Burglary: A burglar crawled through the lower level dog door of a residence in the 8200 block of East Mercer Way sometime between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. An iPad and charger were stolen out of the bedroom upstairs, but no other items were disturbed or missing. Approximately 14,550 in jewelry and $90 in cash were stolen from a 90-year-old woman’s residence in the 8200 block of Avalon Drive on Monday, March 18.

The woman had permitted a couple to come to her house in order to fix her vehicle after she was approached by the man outside of the South end Rite Aid around 4:30 p.m.

The man, described as Hispanic, asked if he could “fix” the scratches on the woman’s vehicle, according to the police report. He said the work would have to be done at her home, for $200. He followed her to her house with a female passenger who he claimed table during a dance in the Mercer Island High School commons area sometime between 9:15 and 11:15 p.m.

March 16 Arrest: Police arrested a 23-year-old man and booked him into the Issaquah Jail on two warrants set at $4,000 bail at 2:13 a.m. after stopping his vehicle for expired tabs in the 9800 block of eastbound I-90. The driver had affixed a 2013 tab to his vehicle to make it appear current.

However, the tab was not registered to his vehicle, as he had bought the tab from a friend.

DUI: A vehicle nearly swerved into a police car at 2:46 a.m. in the 6300 block of eastbound I-90.

The police officer was able to react quickly and avoid a collision. The 32-year-old driver was arrested after he crossed into the far left lane and swerved back into the

Theft: A stainless steel, custom-made Bruce anchor worth $800 was stolen out of a boat parked in a yard in the 3400 block of 74th Avenue S.E., in the First Hill neighborhood. Twenty feet of chain was attached to the anchor. The victim remembered last seeing his anchor in August 2012.

March 19 Mail theft: An REI patronage refund, miscellaneous catalogs and other pieces of mail were stolen out of an unlocked mailbox in the 3400 block of 74th Avenue S.E. sometime after March 15. The mail was returned to the owner after being recovered in the 3300 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. Arrest: Police booked a 45-year-old man into the Issaquah Jail on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant at 3 a.m.

Yes, it might be toll rates akin to ones from yesteryear, but those toll rates would be applied to a significantly more car-centric community than has ever existed.

A friend of mine is now worried about a $5,000 annual increase in his com-

muting bill because he has three cars, teenagers and a highly mobile family. I’m sure he’d be happy to see the city spend even several hundred dollars per household on his behalf — and on behalf of all Mercer Island families — if that means not being compelled to pay thousands of dollars a year — year over year — to subsidize completion of the 520 bridge, which he will rarely use.

Minimum wage law exemption to help state’s unemployed youth fails Washington has the sixth highest teen unemployment rate in the nation at around 28 percent. The national average is 17 percent.

But that figure failed to launch legislation this session that could have improved opportunities for teens and young adults to enter or return to the work force.

HB 1150 and SB 5275 would have allowed small businesses to hire new employees at a less-than-minimum wage for the first 680 hours of work completed.

Sponsor of the House version, Rep. Cary Condotta (R-Wenatchee), said the bill was intended to address the chronically high rate of teen unemployment in Washington by giving businesses an incentive to provide jobs for young workers with little to no work experience.

The Employment Security Department stated that between February 2012 and January 2013, 124,100 16 to 19-year-olds were estimated to be in the civilian workforce. Of those, 89,000 are currently employed and 35,100 are unemployed and actively looking for work.

According to the legislation proposals, the Department of Labor and Industries would be required to provide a training certificate that would allow employers to pay new employees 75 percent of the state minimum wage or the full federal minimum wage, whichever is greater.

The current hourly state minimum wage is $9.19, with 75 percent of that being $6.89. The federal minimum wage is $7.25. So, according to current minimum wage standards, if the proposals had been adopted, qualifying new employees could be paid $7.25 per hour, thus saving employers nearly $2 per hour from the mandated minimum wage.

Renton Airport control tower to be unmanned Federal budget cuts will close five towers in Washington state

As of April 4, the Renton Airport will no longer staff its control tower.

The airport lies just two miles south, by air, from the southern tip of Mercer Island.

The Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Friday reached the decision that 149 federal contract towers will

close, beginning April 7, as part of the agency’s sequestration implementation plan, including the tower at Renton Municipal Airport.

The airport will remain open, but the traffic control tower will be unstaffed unless Congress acts to end the federal sequester.

Renton Municipal has operated with a control tower since 1943, according to Airport Manager Ryan Zulauf, and the closing of the tower could “compromise� safety in and around the airport. “We’ve never operated without a tower,� Zulauf said. “We have a complex

airspace.�

Seattle control will still maintain the airspace, but due to Renton Municipal’s location in a valley, the Seattle radar does not have a view of the Renton runways.

Though not required by law, pilots will be expected to self-report on takeoffs and landings beginning April 7 and will have to keep an eye out for fellow aircraft over the airport. “We heard from communities across the country about the importance of their towers, and these were very tough decisions,� said Transportation Secretary

Some communities will elect to participate in the FAA’s non-federal tower program and assume the cost of continued, on-site air traffic control services at their airport (see Advisory Circular AC 90-93A). The FAA is committed to facilitating this transition.

The FAA will begin a four-week phased closure of the 149 federal contract towers beginning on April 7.

Zulauf said Renton officials were “still trying to sort this all out� after just getting news of the pending closure, but as of Friday, plans are to shut down the tower. “What happens next is the tower closes on April 7 unless we can figure out how to fund it with dollars found through the airport,�

New AAA truck offers roadside charging

The Seattle/Bellevue area is one of the first regions in the nation to have a mobile electric vehicle (EV) fast charging service to help EV owners with range anxiety.

AAA now can assist members whose all-electric vehicles have run out of “fuel” with a fast level-3 charge at the roadside rather than towing them to a charging facility. On average, a 15-minute level-3 charge will allow an all-electric vehicle to go about 10 miles.

“AAA has been a leader in addressing the needs of motorists for more than a century, and the introduction of mobile electric vehicle charging continues that tradition,” said John Milbrath, AAA Washington’s Member Services vice president. “Members can now get quick charging service at the roadside in the major cities along this corridor that runs from Washington to California.”

This new high-tech charging truck from AAA will assist electric vehicle motorists with ‘range anxiety’ by recharging batteries with fast level-3 charging on local highways. AAA Washington’s truck is the first PTO driven level-3 roadside charging unit in the nation, joining three other types of fast mobile chargers deployed by AAA in California and Oregon.

AAA Washington joins other AAA clubs in Oregon (Portland) and California (San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles) to provide level3 roadside charging. The mobile charging trucks in these communities create charging power through an on-board generator that is powered by gasoline or alternative fuels.

AAA Washington’s mobile charging truck is also equipped to provide light-duty emergency road

service, including: battery testing, jump start and replacement; unlock services; tire changes; gas delivery and minor repairs.

The truck will provide 10 to 15 minutes of charge time to members with discharged all-electric vehicles at the roadside, which will allow the vehicle to drive three to 15 miles to a charging station, where they can further charge their vehicle.

Without sight or words, Jim Holt taught himself and others This is the second of three stories about special education student, Jim Holt.

Islander Middle School student Jim Holt, who died suddenly late last month at age 16, was a severely disabled special needs student.

He was born with chromosomal abnormalities that left him both mentally and physically damaged. He needed constant care. He had little vision and was unable to speak. But over the years, his presence drew hundreds of caregivers, friends and admirers into his life.

Over 400 people attended his funeral at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church.

Many called themselves members of ‘Team Jim,’ a group of friends, caregivers and supporters of Jim and his family; his mother Kathy Holt, his brother, Thomas Holt, his father, Steve Holt and stepmother Pattie Holt and her grown children.

Despite his challenges, Jim was able to learn and communicate with others.

Jim formed strong relationships with his caregivers without speaking.

Jim drew others to him.

School district staff from administrators to para-pros learned how to communicate and innovate in order to reach Jim. They were deliberate about including him in the life of the school.

Through the efforts of his parents, teachers and fellow students, both adults and students were drawn to Jim

The staff at Islander Middle School still speaks of Jim in the first person.

His teacher, Julie Riccio, is bereft.

Riccio and the staff who worked with Jim do not speak of his disabilities. Instead they laugh and tell stories about what he

IMS Principal Mary Jo Budzius said, “Jim was so much a part of our school.

Now, it is just too quiet around here without him.”

“He was everywhere,” she said. “And if he fell, he would get up and go on.”

His school day was both ordinary and extraordinary, given his circumstances. He rode the bus, like other students. He came to his classroom with chores to do.

It might be working with his friend, Sydney Elston, to take roll by pressing buttons on a slate with pictures of fellow students or collecting the mail for his teacher.

Next, he rode his bright green custom-built bike with his feet strapped firmly into the pedals, on a circuit through the IMS school hallways. It was part of his daily regimen to put in a mile on the bike.

It helped the strengthen his lungs, Riccio said.

But it also allowed Jim to make himself known to staff and students throughout the building. He was not

He liked to lay on the floor with his legs outstretched. Soon after he would be positioned on a blanket or a mat, he might pull himself over to the doorway, just as a principal or visitor might pass by.

Once a week, Jim and the other students from his classroom would walk or wheel down to the QFC store at the South end shopping center, where they would shop for ‘healthy snacks.’ They had bright yellow ponchos to wear on rainy days.

His mental development was of an infant less than

a year old. But Jim had 16 years of experience to build on, Riccio said.

Before his four years at the middle school, Jim was a student at Island Park Elementary School, and he perfected pulling himself up off the floor by hanging onto a chair or a table and walking a few steps.

He might ‘chase’ his special education teacher, Kristy Kenyon around the tables.

“It was always so fun to see how far he would go to ‘get me,’” she wrote to his family of her memories of having him in her classroom.

“In what would normally be a simple game, I know Jim used everything he had to keep up,” she said.

Kenyon and para-pro Jim Berrington (aka Big Jim) helped him transition to middle school, training the staff there and easing ‘Little Jim’ into his new classroom.

Kenyon remembers that Little Jim was always calm when Big Jim was with him.

“Big Jim would always be talking with him,” she said.

Holly Pratt remembers Jim from her time working at Island Park. She fed him (through a gastrostomy tube or G-Tube) and ferried him to recess.

“All the other kids loved Jim,” she wrote. “Many would come up to him and grab his hand and talk to him — particularly the girls. In his special way, I know he loved the attention,” Pratt said.

At the middle school, para-pro Kamma Scott was hired for just an hour a day to help out at the resource room. Jim was the first student she met and worked with. Within the week, they added two more hours for her to work. She began to ride the school bus with Jim to and from school every

Islanders fastpitch off to strong start

The Mercer Island fast pitch team is off to a 3-2 start after its first week of games.

The team lost to Lake Washington and Sammamish before shutting out Garfield last week.

The Mercer Island track team traveled to Sammamish on Thursday, March 21, in the first meet of the season.

In the boys competition, Risley Lesko finished the 100-meter race in 11.37, while Justin Boynes finished in 11.87.

In the 200-meter race, Ethan Vu finished in 24 seconds, followed by Andrew Barnwell in 24.99. Peter Giseburt finished in 25.05, while Ryan Jones earned a 25.45 time. Greyson Weltyk finished in 26.70, Kwame Opoku finished in 27.28, Daichi Momma finished in 28.27, Richard Chess finished in 29.21 and Jasper Hugunin finished in 30.84.

Vu finished in 52.99 seconds in the 400-meter race, while Emerson Shultz finished in 55.9. Boynes finished in 57.54, followed by Luke Bohlinger in 58.52 seconds and Nathan Gallatin in 58.63.

Dylan Lesko had the top time in the 800-meter event, finishing in 2:06.72, while Jonathan Perr finished in 2:18.87, Simon Wang finished in 2:36.59 and Jake Jenkins finished in 2:44.69.

Eric Schulz won the 1,600meter event, finishing in 4:32, followed by Matthew Wotipka in 4:34 and Daniel Mayer in 4:43. Nathan Cummings finished in 4:44, Ian Platou finished in 4:56, followed by Gallatin in 4:59 and Teddy Larkin in 5:17.

Thomas Brown finished in 5:28 and Luke Mounger earned a 5:31 time.

Seattle Thunder finished the 3,200-meter race in 11:16.36 minutes.

Max Tilden had the Islanders’ best time in the 300-meter race, finishing in 46.80 seconds, followed

by John Gallagher in 46.84, and Nicholas Richards finished in 49.94.

The Islanders 4x400 relay team finished in 3:44.26.

In the shot put event, Tyler Walters threw 41 feet and 11 inches, while Sean Pyne finished with a toss of 40’1.5. Nolan Conway threw 39’2, Espen Platou threw 34’5 and Collin Nicoll threw 32’9.

Dylan Majewski threw the discus 83 feet and four inches for the Islanders’ best toss. Teammate Conway threw 82’8, Sahir Noorani threw 77’7 and Niccoll threw 75’6.

Weltyk finished the high jump with a 5-foot-2-inch leap, while Jones finished at the 5’0 mark. Barnwell finished the long jump with a 16’6 best leap, while Gallagher had a 34’2.25 in the triple jump.

In the girls competition, Latrevian Saunders had the best 100-meter time for the Islanders in 13.88, while Emily Lightfoot finished in 14.19 and Emily Bassett ran in 14.21. Lauren Emick had a 14.39 time, Katherine Hendrikson finished in 14.81 and Katie Lee ran it in 14.92.

Lara Harrison won the 200-meter race in 26.13, while Lightfoot finished in 29.19 and Emick finished

The Islanders’ 4x200 relay of Lorial Yeadon, Casey Piper, Kristen Brackmann and Lauren Emick finished in 1:53.23.

In the field events, Christina Doctor won the shot put event, throwing 24’8, while Katherine Hendrikson threw 23’5.5 and Carly Ledbetter threw 23’1.5.

Gina So finished with a 67’2 throw in the javelin event, while Ledbetter threw 63’10.

Emily Lightfoot jumped 4’8 in the high jump, and Saunders had a 14’4.75 leap in the long jump.

The Islanders will host Interlake on Thursday, March 28, in a 4:30 p.m. meet.

Baseball camp for Islanders in April The Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Baseball Jazz, will be hosting a baseball camp for Islanders.

The Pro Baseball Instructional Camp is for players of all abilities, taught by former big league players who will help players take their game to the next level.

The camp is for kids ages 8 through 13.

The first session runs April 1-3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the South Mercer Playfields. The cost is $93 for residents and $111 for non-residents.

The second session will run June 17-20 at Island Crest Park.

Baked eggs, like these, make a great breakfast as we transition from winter to spring.

Herb-baked eggs 1/4 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 1/4 teaspoon minced fresh thyme leaves 1/4 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary leaves 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley 1 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan 6 extra-large eggs 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1 tablespoon unsalted butter Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper Toasted French bread or brioche, for serving Preheat the broiler for 5 minutes and place the oven rack 6 inches below the heat.

Combine the garlic, thyme, rosemary, parsley, and Parmesan and set aside. Carefully crack 3 eggs into each of 2 small bowls or teacups (you

won’t be baking them in these) without breaking the yolks. (It’s very important to have all the eggs ready to go before you start cooking.)

Place 2 individual gratin dishes on a baking sheet.

Place 1 tablespoon of cream and 1/2 tablespoon of butter in each dish and place under the broiler for about 3 minutes, until hot and bubbly. Quickly, but carefully, pour 3 eggs into each gratin dish and sprinkle evenly with the herb mixture, then sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Place back under the broiler for 5 to 6 minutes, until the whites of the eggs are almost cooked.

(Rotate the baking sheet once if they aren’t cooking evenly.) The eggs will continue to cook after you take them out of the oven.

Allow to set for 60 seconds and serve hot with toasted bread.

In the half marathon walk, Diana Robinson took the top spot, finishing in 2:14.54, followed

by Merisa Heu-Weller in 2:16.08. Celeste Bailey was the third-place woman to finish in 2:20.54, with Megan Hall in fourth place in 2:22.55 and Alexis Pontikis in 2:29.48 in fifth place.

Robert Chiles was the men’s top-place finisher in the half marathon walk, earning a 2:19.23 time, while John Kjargaard was second in 2:23.34. Harel Kodesh was the third-place male finisher in 2:37.04, while Sittipan Sittikariya was fourth in 2:39.13 and Rod Hall finished in fifth in 2:42.19.

In the 10k race, Michael Cooke was the overall top finisher with a 35:17 time, followed by Scott Tucker at 36:28. Brian Wardell finished in 36.56 for third place, while Andrew Williams was fourth in 38:19 minutes. Robinson Howell was fifth after finishing in 38:22.

The top women’s finishers in the 10k included: Dena Evans in 39:24, Jill Frank for second in 42:06, Celina Santi third in 43:10, Jennifer Kelly fourth in 44:30, and Flo Booth finished fifth in 44:46.

In the 5k run and walk, Conrad Saam finished as the top racer with a 19:52 time, while Rick Spoonemore finished in second in 20:07.

Joe Campagna was third in 20:20, Spencer SlavenLazzar was fourth in 20:34 and Kevin Alexander was fifth in 20:48.

In the women’s results for the 5k, Morgan Ekemo was first in 20:46, followed

by Joan Eilertson in second in 21:32. Barbie Young finished in third place in 22:12, Kirsten Nesholm was fourth in 22:27 and Emily Perchlick was fifth in 22:42.
