First phase complete on Tacoma's Sprague Avenue enhancement project Posted online Tues., March 5 Tacoma's Sprague Avenue gateway has a new look with the completion of the first phase of the Sprague enhancement project. The Tacoma entry from Highway 16 has landscape improvements and better separation between South Sprague Avenue and the adjacent residential street known as residential Sprague. Stormwater runoff from the 0.63 acres of arterial roadway will now be filtered with bio-retention rain gardens. Nearly half an acre is enhanced with landscaping that will improve the City's tree canopy, adding more than 200 new trees and reducing rainwater runoff into the Thea Foss watershed. In addition, a new median has been constructed on South Sprague Avenue to provide traffic calming near the new neighborhood gateway sign. In 2009, the Sprague enhancement project became an initiative of the Central Neighborhood Council and other neighbors after the Washington State Department of Transportation vacated the area and re-opened the freeway entrance to Highway 16. The neighborhood council worked collaboratively with the City of Tacoma and a neighborhood steering committee to find funding and determine project objectives, priorities, needs and design. The steering committee quickly recognized they should focus on the east side of Sprague. The neighborhood council plans to continue working with stakeholders to find additional funding and resources for enhancement of residential Sprague and the west side of South Sprague Avenue. This will be Phase II of the current project. "The neighbors in this area have been looking at this eyesore for many years and the Central Neighborhood Council felt it was time to engage all parties and help," said Justin Leighton, chair of Tacoma's Central Neighborhood Council. "I greatly appreciate the collaboration to accomplish what we see today." Campbell will seek second term on Tacoma City Council

File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor Tacoma City Councilmember Marty Campbell, who was elected to represent District 4 in 2009, officially announced Thursday that he is running for re-election. Campbell currently serves as the Deputy Mayor for Tacoma, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, ViceChair of the Public Safety, Human Services and Education Committee, as well as many other boards and committees. His term as councilmember expires on Dec. 31, 2013. Prior to being elected, Campbell served in a leadership role for several community organizations, including the Cross District Association, New Tacoma Neighborhood Council, The Grand Cinema, First Creek Neighbors, Dometop Neighborhood Alliance, TEAM, Downtown Merchant's Group, City Club of Tacoma. He was also the owner of Buzzard's Discs and Stadium Video. Campbell has received endorsements from Pierce County Councilmember Rick Talbert;

27th District Senator Jeannie Darneille and Representatives Jake Fey and Laurie Jinkins; Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist; Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland and at-large City Councilmembers David Boe, Ryan Mello and Victoria Woodards; and Tacoma School Board Directors Scott Heinze, Kurt Miller, Catherine Ushka and Karen Vialle. "We need to continue to drive down unemployment and crime by creating jobs and focusing on improving public safety," said Councilmember Campbell. "We also need to continue improving infrastructure by focusing on our neighborhoods and schools where many of our roads and sidewalks are either in need of major repair or are non-existent. Most of all, we to need to maintain a balanced budget that allows us increase resources to core services." Marty and his wife, Sandy, have lived on the East side of Tacoma for over a decade, and currently live next door to their daughter and two grandchildren.

gram with a 95 per cent completion rate and an 85 per cent placement rate for graduating participants. This public/private partnership integrates business,

apprenticeship and technical college education to certify graduates with a "general manufacturing" education and the professional skills employers identified as essential to their workplace. "Workforce Central is committed to increasing the employment rate of our homeless families and realizes they are often unaware of opportunities for workforce training and placement assistance," said WorkForce Central CEO Linda Nguyen. "This program offers our residents a pathway to careers with advancement opportunities in high demand industries and provides the skilled talent our business community needs to grow and create additional jobs in our local economy." Building Changes is a nonprofit organization working to end homelessness across Washington State. It fosters collaborative partnerships with government entities, community-based service providers and private philanthropy and harnesses innovative, evidence-based strategies to collectively address the barriers to housing stability. Building Changes support partners to do this work through grantmaking, capacity building and policy guidance. Building Changes oversees the Washington Families Fund, a unique public-private partnership created in 2004 by the Washington State Legislature. The Washington Families Fund is dedicated to reducing and ending family homelessness statewide by funding model programs and innovative strategies that address the problems of homelessness both at the systems and family level.

Tacoma Public Library offers new mobile app

Patrons of the Tacoma Public Library can now use an app for smartphones and tablets that enable them to search and place holds on the library catalog, renew items, find directions to the nearest branch, ask questions of staff, see a calendar of upcoming programs, scan a book's ISBN number to see if the library has the title or download eBooks and eAudioBooks directly onto their devices. The new app even allows patrons to connect with the library on Facebook, Twitter, or through library blogs. Library users can download the new app online at Tacoma.boopsie.com or search "TPL mobile" in their app stores. The mobile app is currently available for Android smartphones and tablets. TPL mobile should be available shortly through Apple's iTunes store. Patrons experiencing difficulty in loading the library application onto their smartphone or tablet are encouraged to bring their mobile device to the library for assistance. "Everyone lives on their mobile phones these days, so it's important for the library to be eas-

ily accessible whenever and wherever people need access to our staff and rich resources," said Susan Odencrantz, Library Director. "Our mobile app puts library information just one click away with much faster access than going through a browser. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this new way to use the library by downloading our app." Searching the catalog with the mobile app is especially easy, library staff say. Just type the first few letters of two or three words and search results will begin to appear. For example, if you're looking up Mark Twain in the catalog, just type "ma twa." Once you find the title you're looking for, you can place it on hold right from your phone. The library's mobile app was developed by Boopsie Inc. More than 250 libraries and universities use Boopsie to increase campus and community visibility. For more information on the library's new mobile app, visit Tacoma. boopsie.com on your mobile device or contact the library at (253) 292-2001.
