Dear reader, “Are you Irish?”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked this question in the last 23 years.

I have a mane of red hair. And my name is Keegan. And in the summer, I get a TON of freckles. Yet, whenever the month of March comes along, I feel like a fraud.

You see, I am A BIT Irish. But I don’t really know anything about my heritage.

From what I’ve gathered, I’m German-Irish (hence the ginger disposition), my mom comes from the McCleary Clan (or from the Clary grocery store??), I was raised Catholic - and my uncle’s can drink a lot of beer. My favorite joke growing up had something to do with the only difference between an Irish Catholic funeral and an Irish Catholic wedding being one less person to drink. And most importantly, when March 17 comes around, I’m supposed to wear green.

For our March issue, we’re going green. That is, we’re channeling the Irish inside us all. On the menu: which Irishthemed drinks will make you feel lucky this month. We’ve also got a feature on rock violinist Geoffrey Castle, who will celebrate Irish tradition as part of his 8th annual St. Patrick’s Eve party this month.

Not in the mood to dress in green and act a fool? No worries. We’ve got all the scoop on Bellevue’s new Salt Spa. While you’re there, you can read a romance novel - or read our story about the culture of romance novels. Now that sounds like a relaxing way to spend the day.

Snoqualmie’s Woodman Lodge Steakhouse and Saloon is tribute to a bygone era

BY SETH TRUSCOTT Once a place where hardworking tradesmen, woodcutters and lumberjacks gathered to build a community, Snoqualmie’s Woodman Lodge Steakhouse and Saloon is now a place to enjoy a great steak in an authentic pioneer atmosphere.

Originally built in 1902, the Lodge served the Modern Woodmen of America Camp 8630, and was a hub of social activity in a working town. Members of the Woodman Lodge did the dangerous jobs like harvesting timber, mining coal, building power plants and bringing the railroad over the Cascade Mountains. The local lodge served their fraternal needs through the 1970s.

Following a dramatic renovation, Peter LaHaye, an experienced restauranteur, reopened the Lodge in 2008.

His vision gives diners a chance to travel back in time to an era when people worked hard, played hard, lived with honor and took the chances that paved the way for today’s lifestyle.

The century-old building got a completely new kitchen, ornate bars, tiled bathrooms. The upper story is dominated by an antique wooden bar. The interior flickers with light from dozens of gas lanterns.

The showpiece of the Lodge is its main bar. The zinctopped, custom-made bar is surrounded by a wooden rail, supported by hand-crafted stanchions in the shape of eagle’s talons. Below, water flows through a spittoon,

in the same fashion seen in the long-lost bars of more than a century ago.

To LaHaye, a memorable dining experience has to have three things: Great food, attentive service and a classic atmosphere.

“We get a lot of inquiring questions regarding the saloon bar with its running water spittoon trough, if the ceiling is original and who are the people in the historic Snoqualmie photos displayed throughout the restaurant,” LaHaye says. “It’s rewarding to see the guests’ reaction, and that what we have recreated is appreciated, and provides guests with a momentary escape back into time.

“If you are one who appreciates a rustic yet classy ambiance with a touch of taxidermy, gas lamps and history, this is your steakhouse,” he added.

The Woodman’s menu has evolved over the past five years, adhering to the traditional steak and shrimp cocktail options offered by city steakhouses. The Lodge is known for its appetizer options, and “being a steakhouse, we grill it!” LaHaye says. Even the Woodman Wedge Salad, lightly brushed with olive oil, salt and pepper, hits the grill for a golden-brown texture.

The main event is, of course, the steak. Unique to the Woodman is its 20-ounce Cowboy Steak. LaHaye was inspired to recreate this meal from experiences cooking ribeyes over an open Montana campfire.

The French-cut bone-in ribeye spends an hour in the

smoker, before being grilled and topped with a cilantro-lime butter.

Another favorite is the prime-grade Nebraska bonein Delmonico, a New York strip cut from the rib end of the primal, which provides excellent marbling and flavor, says LaHaye.

A minty gin cocktail - and the perfect green drink for a St. Patrick’s Day party. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, orange bitters add a nice citrus zest.

Ingredients: 1 oz gin 1 tsp green crème de menthe 2 dashes bitters Preparation: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Nutty Irishman

Need a break from whiskey? Try this crazy-delicious and creamy concoction. Enjoy as either a shot or a drink on the rocks.

Ingredients: 1/2 shot Baileys Irish Cream 1/2 shot Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur Preparation: To drink as a shot, mix half shots of Baileys Irish Cream and Frangelico.

Or mix one ounce of each of the liqueurs and enjoy it on the rocks. A St. Patrick’s Day variation adds a shot of green Crème de Menthe for green color and a minty taste.

Ingredients: 1/3 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream (Bailey’s) 1/3 oz green crème de menthe 1/3 oz Grand Marnier orange liqueur (some use Butterscotch Schnapps) Preparation: First, pour the crème de menthe into a glass. Next, slowly pour the Bailey’s Irish cream over the back of a spoon so that it floats on top of the Creme de Menthe. Finally, slowly pour the Grand Marnier over the back of the spoon so that it floats on top of the Bailey’s Irish creme.

t has been suggested that my old-fashioned, increasingly unreliable, but beloved Blackberry is an actual extension of my hand. I don’t disagree. But I do offer some defensive explanation in that to call my home phone number is a fool’s errand because the ringer is turned off and I am rarely at home.

Our quaint little plug-in phone exists solely for power outages and other emergencies. Sistafoo also uses it to stalk me out of earshot of her caretakers whenever I dare to leave home without her. And on occasion the boys will fumble with it if their own phones are out of commisHEIJA NUNN sion, but they are adorable failures with old technology.

Once, Venom Pen used the landline to call a friend at home. He was convinced that “this stupid phone” was broken when after several attempts he failed to hear ringing on the other line. He was certain the remedy was to use my cell phone. I had to gently pry Ma Bell’s phone

from his frustrated white knuckles, dial the number, listen, then politely explain low-tech busy signals to my high tech teen. I even managed to keep a straight face.

I don’t heavily screen my calls unless, of course, and after 11 years in the Bellevue School District, I have learned to ALWAYS answer calls with a “456” prefix…always.

Before their first day of preschool, I taught Sweetie-Boy, Venom Pen and Sistafoo that in any situation, anywhere, if they feel like they need to call home , it is okay to politely insist on access to a phone if they don’t have their own. “Call me,” I said.

Looking back, either I over taught, or they overlearned. Because my kids call me, a lot. Most of these calls or texts are quick and logistical in nature, i.e. pick me up at this place at this time.

Daytime calls from school are more complicated and can present pivotal parenting choices. Is it more important to teach consequences or scurry to school to deliver a flash drive just in time for a presentation? Is it good or bad to respond to a fashion S.O.S., or to deliver cleats to the field again? (Note: the phone just rang. The kid with the freakish cough just called with an “update” underscored with a silent plea to come home. No deal, I will deliver cough suppressant in a bit.)

inconvenience ratio while pondering the worst case scenarios from their perspective. For example, having to manage a missed deadline, a lack of lunch money or a do or die social quandary without a mommy-assist could build life skills such as assertiveness, resourcefulness and guts. On the other hand, I am not sure losing a letter grade or missing school pictures due to forgotten papers is necessarily the best time to teach a lesson.

Lately the kids are finding time to throw me a few curve calls. Last week Sistafoo put me on the spot in front of a school office audience when she called to ask if she was taking the Enrichment Test. I hemmed and hawed my way through an explanation of why I had not signed her up. She was undeterred and turned to ask the school secretary for the phone number to the Enrichment Office.

I was speechless until the school secretary got on the line, but I regained my senses in time to ask if there is a special fast pass to the Gifted Program for kids who arrange their own testing. Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Now that the kids seem to have gotten the hang of this whole phone thing I think I will revise my Call Me policy to something a little more modern, and convenient. From now on instead of saying Call Me, I think I’ll say Call Me...Maybe.

Salty solutions If you breathe deeply, you can actually taste the salt on your lips, says Matthias Riebe, as he leads a tour of the Saltminearium, a new spa in Bellevue’s Bel-Red neighborhood, and the only facility of its kind in the state. With the lights dimmed, the floor, walls and accents emit a pinkish glow. At first glance it looks the interior of a sand castle. But Matthias, who co-owns the space with his wife, Annett, points out that it's in fact made of 38,000 pounds of rock salt.

Known as halotherapy, the secret to treatment lies not in the relaxation itself, but in the inhalation of a dry aerosal salt.

A generator blows miniscule crystals into the air. Simple inhalation is believed to improve circulation, elevate the mood, have an anti-inflammatory effect on mucous membranes and even ease symptoms of ADHD. "For me [it's not what] the people say," says Matthias of halotherapy's health benefits. "They come out and there's a smile on their face...That's for me, enough."

The medicinal effects of salt caves were discovered several centuries ago when workers emerged much healthier than from the coal mines and other cavernous work environments of the age. Salt spas are common throughout Europe. In fact, Annett, who suffers from severe allergies, visited one in Germany, when the couple lived there. It was the first treatment to show noticeable results.

Eager to replicate that experience stateside, they traveled across the U.S. researching locations for their project. Both admit it was the overcast skies and dreary

weather that partly attracted them to Bellevue. Matthias and Annett wanted their spa to provide an escape from the outside world - which is why they've housed it in a stout building, barricaded by a retail complex closed off from street traffic.

Matthias has also designed a light show to mimic the sun rising and setting in nature. Over the course of a half hour a constellation of stars forms on the ceiling, the room turns pitch dark and a giant orange orb appears on the opposite wall.

Visitors emerge energized and glowing.

"We've already seen an incredible interest from the wellness community‌who see it as a great alternative to doctors and pharmaceuticals," says spokesperson Nina Cambern.

The spa is comprised of two main rooms - a space for adults and a room for children. In the children's room, mini chairs are pushed up against the wall, a light show plays on one wall and a sandbox full of salt particles occupies one corner.

Rather than relying on costly prescriptions or frequent doctor's visits, they hope visitors we'll see their services as a welcome alternative. Already, they've been approached by a number of interested parties, including yoga teachers, instructors from Bastyr University, and most recently a hypnotherapist, who was brought to tears by the soothing effects of the treatment.

"People leave on cloud nine," Cambern says. "It's like they're floating in space."

One of the only salt spas in the country and state, designing the space presented its own set of obstacles. After about a year of construction and design, the spa opened in December of last year. The couple hopes to introduce several new programs over

the coming weeks, including a HaloYoga class that promises to improve circulation while boosting the immune system.

Depending on individual's reasons for visiting, Matthias suggests coming several times a week at first. Afterward, he says, visits can taper off to just once a week.

They hope that all walks of life will benefit

from their treatment, including athletes, young children and those who are generally health conscious.

"One day [at the spa] is like one day at the beach," says Matthias, shining a flashlight on the dark room as he points out the tiny particles. "This is salt in its purest form. "

Keeping tradition alive Local violinist celebrates Celtic tradition at 8th annual St. Patrick’s Eve Party

Playing violin is cool. At least that's what Geoffrey Castle wants you to think. And if you've heard – or seen him – shredding on his six-string electric violin, you'd probably agree.

A seasoned performer who has called the Northwest home for nearly 15 years, Castle fell in love with music whilst growing up in Alexandria, Va. Raised on the music of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix, Castle knew at an early age he wanted to be a rockstar. When Castle's friends formed a garage band in high school, he knew he wanted a piece of the action. The catch? He wanted to play violin.

"They had Marshall amps and I had an acoustic violin – there was no contest," Castle says about trying to play with the band.

Makeshift amplifiers and speaker connections did the trick for awhile, but Castle knew it was time to invest in the real deal. He purchased his first electric violin during his senior year.

After high school, Castle moved to New York City, where he attended Columbia University – and paid his way via the money he made playing on the streets.

"It was the perfect college gig," Castle says. "I made my own hours – and got paid in cash."

While in New York City, Castle also got a taste for Broadway – standing in as one of three musicians in the Tony-award winning play "M. Butterfly."

"They needed a violin player who could improvise and play Chinese percussion," Castle says.

Castle says most violin players aren't trained to do that, but he knew if he wanted to set himself apart, improvisation was the way to go. As a result, Castle's musical journey has been far from ordinary.

This road found him teaching himself how to play louder, more experimental music than the stuff traditionally taught. Inspired by French-born violinist Jean Luc Ponty, Castle has become known for his genrebending blend of Celtic, blues, jazz and rock and roll pushing the boundaries of traditionally "classical" music and re-defining what being a "violinist" means.

A performer for more than 30 years, Castle has selfreleased eight albums of original music, the most recent being a double disc entitled the “Deep Well Sessions.”

When he's not working on his own material, the veteran player also sits in with other musicians. Castle has performed – and recorded – with the likes of Alan White (Yes), Spike Edney (Queen), Jamie Moses (Queen, Bad Company), Tom Bowes (Tower of Power), Eric Bazilian (the Hooters), and more.

But for Castle, the best part about being a professional musician is playing live, as evident in the 250-plus shows he does each year.

In addition to traveling the country, Castle plays host for the weekly Monday Night Celtic Night party at Kirkland’s Wilde Rover Irish Pub – where he and co-host Dan Connolly play a variety of Celtic tunes. This month, Castle will also host the 8th Annual St. Patrick’s Eve Concert, taking place at the Kirkland Performance Center.

Celtic music has always been at the heart of Castle’s playing, and the show – which features a combination of rock and traditional Irish songs and dancing – has become a new tradition on the Eastside.

“So much of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is about going out and getting drunk and puking green beer on somebody’s shoes. And there’s a lot more to Irish heritage than that,” Castle says. “And that’s what my performance is really about.”

Castle says he finds Celtic music to be the type of passionate, emotional music he is inspired by. That’s why he started experimenting with it, and developed a show.

And while drinking isn’t the focus, Castle insists there will be Jameson and Guinness available for those looking to loosen up a bit.

This year’s celebration will also serve as a release party for Castle’s newest album, “Celtic Night,” – a collection of songs from his performances at the Wild Rover.

An advocate for keeping the arts in schools, Castle spends much of his time on the road visiting schools and community centers to perform at assemblies and teach workshops.

"I'd say it's the most important thing I do," Castle says.

Castle is also a major supporter of "Keep the Music Alive," and the All-Star Synergia Concert, which helps support music programs in the schools.

He says it's his goal to change the perceptions often associated with string players, to prove that even "macho" guys can play string instruments, and that it's nothing to be teased about.

"When I'm done, that kid in fifth grade, who is playing violin and getting teased, is the hero of the school," Castle says.

As far as being an artist living in the Northwest, Castle says he couldn't be more proud. "[The Northwest] has always been a place about innovating music," Castle says. "People are willing to take a little extra time to figure out something new."

It’s a tradition that’s seeming to stand the test of time.

Prompted by the Northwest’s nostalgia for ‘90s chic, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ smash hit “Thrift Shop,” it seems old is becoming the new, new. Yes, shopping secondhand is the “cool” thing to do.

For many, the difference between consignment and thrift shops can be tricky thing to understand. However, there are a few basic rules: thrift stores sell used items that were donated by individuals. In contrast, consignment shops are places where individuals can sell their used clothing through a dealer. The shop takes a percentage of the profit for each item sold. Consignment shops also hand-pick the items they will consign and offer for purchase.

Whether it means perusing the aisles of a high-end consignment shop, or digging through bins at the local thrift store, the Eastside has a variety of options for shoppers with saving on the mind.

CONSIGNMENT

Regarding consignment shops on the Eastside, Ragamoffyn’s in Kirkland is one of a kind. Opened by Gisella Manning 30 years ago, it’s also one of the longest standing.

Known for carrying the best of the best in second hand clothes, Manning’s store features high-end brands including Dolce and Gabbana, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Gucci.

Manning explains that designer handbags and anything Chanel have proved to be the biggest sellers at Ragamoffyn’s over the years.

“When someone comes in and finds a Chanel suit for $1,000 instead of seven or eight [thousand], that’s a really good deal,” Manning says.

Other great finds? Manolo Blahniks (channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw) and Emilio Pucci pumps straight out of the box.

But fostering this caliber of merchandise was not an easy task, says Manning. In fact, she says it took seven or eight years of picking through stacks of clothes to really establish her store as a go-to for designer duds. Manning and her

staff now bring in between 200-400 new high-end items a week.

Also characteristic of Manning’s store is their top of the line customer service and dedication to the customer having the best possible experience.

“My goal is, even thought it’s a second hand store, I don’t want people to feel like they are shopping in a secondhand store,” Manning says. “I want them to feel like they walk into a boutique.”

For those looking to save even more, thrift stores are far from scarce on the Eastside; among them you’ll find Value Village (Redmond), R & D Thrift Store And Boutique (Renton), Northwest Thrift Store (Kirkland), Heart and Home (Bellevue) – and more.

The Bellevue Goodwill has also proved a gem for finding great items at even better prices. Do you want a fancy fur jacket? They’ve got it. Or a pair of funky earrings? You’ll probably find those, too.

In addition to reasonably priced clothing, thrift stores generally offer a wide variety of household goods and furniture. Are you in need of a new kitchen table – or a retro couch? It’s completely reasonable to assume you’ll find that here. The aisles also offer a variety of dish ware, serving trays and decorative figurines.

It should be noted that because thrift stores depend on donations, they are often overloaded, disorderly, and a tad overwhelming to shop in. Yet, if you’ve got the time – and an open mind – there are treasures to be found amongst the neon lights of another forgotten man cave.

It’s no secret the market for consignment and thrift shops is ever growing. So much so, that Manning says she wouldn’t dream of opening a new store today.

“Today, I wouldn’t open a new [consignment store] because Seattle is saturated with consignment and thrift,” she says.

Yet, just this winter, another consignment shop called “Ginnie’s Collection,” opened in Bellevue.

Owned by Ginnie Crawford, and operated by her mother, Stella Powell, the store is looking to join Ragamoffyn’s as a destination for high-end pieces.

“I think there is room for [several] great stores on the Eastside,” Powell says. “They’re all different.”

Manning agrees that each store has something to offer, a different clientele to appease.

There’s a GOOD reason GOODWILL has more than 2,700 stores, it’s GOOD shopping! Good for the people who receive valuable job training skills through Goodwill programs, and good for shoppers who visit Goodwill out of economic need, an admirable commitment to the environment or a lust for treasure-hunting.

Goodwill is good for the pocketbook and after many decades (yes, many) of Goodwill hunting and a quick tour around my house, I have compiled a handy list of 10 things to buy at Goodwill. Eastside businesses help find THE LOOK

T

elevision viewers got a look at THE LOOK in February, a reality competition in which 10 local fashion designers vied for a chance to win money to expand their design business, upcoming editorial coverage in 425 Magazine and the opportunity to display their collection at Neiman Marcus this spring.

The show, from Feb. 18-25 on KING5’s award-winning Evening Magazine, featured five challenges and the elimination of two designers after each of the first four.

The designers had only 14 hours to complete their design for each chalRose Dennis lenge , which became very stressful for them to finish on time and have it “fit and look fabulous” on their model.

The 10 designers selected to compete were Justin Zachary Bartle, Gingerlyn Bellus, Sonia Chehade, Maxwell Cunanan, Julie Danforth, Lisa Hunter, Iris Klein, Monica Kitchen, Deyante Weather and Tina Witherspoon.

The first challenge was to create a cocktail dress inspired by designer accessories available at Eastside retailer David Lawrence.

For week two the designers shopped at Goodwill to select clothing that they had to redesign, inspired by the

In week three the designers were asked to create a paper dress made from designer wallpaper from SJW Wallpaper in Seattle. They also had to incorporate THE

LOOK’s exclusive sponsor Neuro Drinks beverage bottles into their design.

For week four, they met with Dave Masin at Masin’s Fine Furniture and Interior Design where the 2013 interior design trends were shared. The designers then selected their interior designer fabrics and created a day dress for the spring season.

The finale was filmed at The Shops at The Bravern, which was hosted by chef John Howie.

For that last event, a drawing selected one of the previously eliminated designers to come back and compete with the final two. They were each given the same fabric to create five different day and evening looks. Gilda’s Club Seattle was the finale fashion show beneficiary.

THE LOOK 2013 winner was Julie Danforth, the designer previously eliminated in the competition. Her inspiration came from famous fashion designers of the ‘60s and the iconic celebrities who wore them. Her classic design lines and timeless silhouettes were combined with subtle sexiness and sophistication, all which won the judges votes. She deserved the $10,000.

BY KEEGAN PROSSER Fact: It’s been far too long since Tony Roberts came to the Northwest. Thankfully, the funny man returns to the Eastside this month - along with buddy Faizon Love - as part of the “Black Pack” comedy tour.

Born in Detroit, Roberts has appeared on a number of comedy specials – including HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam,” BET’s “ComicView,” and “It’s Showtime at the Apollo.” He’s also appeared in a handful of movies - and is currently working alongside five other comedians as part of the cast of the new sitcom “Mr. Box Office.” But his role as a stand-up comedian is where you should expect the unexpected.

“Last time we went on tour together, Faizon invited a bunch of people to come watch him get a pedicure and sign autographs,” Roberts said. “[This time] we might have 30 people in the green room.”

Also on Roberts’ agenda? Visiting Bruce Lee’s grave, of course. If you’re lucky, maybe he’ll bring you along.

scene: If you had to describe your act in two words, what would they be?

Tony Roberts: Unpredictable and explosive scene: What inspires your comedy?

TR: The power that laughter has – the thing that it does to people. When you do stand-up you’re healing people on so many levels, and you don’t even realize it. I just love it.

scene: You’ve talked about popular music on stage before; what are you listening to now?

TR: I collect classic rock, so a lot of that. The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles – and the Rolling Stones. My number one group is the Rolling Stones; I just love how they perform. And I’m from Detroit so I listen to oldies, like Motown stuff. scene: The Rolling Stones are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year. Do you have any plans to go to one of their shows?

TR: I’m too busy performing myself! But I totally support them. I show them love on Twitter and stuff. scene: Speaking of being busy, I understand you’re currently on set filming the sitcom “Mr. Box Office.”

How does filming a TV show differ from doing standup?

TR: On stage you are really on your own. When you are on stage there are no rules – you just have to be funny. You’re the only boss. But on set, it’s like being in school. You have people directing you, you’ve got ward-

robes and lights, you have a script to follow – and then you’ve got to get it right. TV right.

scene: Would you say you prefer the informality of being on stage?

TR: Yeah. I feel better when I’m by myself. But I love being on set too. The thing I’m learning about TV is that it only takes a couple episodes, and then you’re family.

We all help each other out. scene: “Mr. Box Office” also stars comedian Bill Bellamy. Have you worked with him previously?

TR: Oh yeah. Not on film. But we’ve done a lot of [stand-up] shows together. This Valentine’s Day we [did] four days together [for Shaquille O’Neal’s All Star Comedy Tour]. scene: What is your current act about?

TR: Kids. Because I’m an old-school dad, and I’ve got young kids. I’m in my forties, so I’m trying to raise them old-school style, and they’re trying to teach me these new school rules.

scene: How has having kids changed your act?

TR: It used to be more extreme material, like relationships and violence. Now it’s like 30 percent family; parents can relate to my set more now because I’m living [that life].

scene: Have you been to Northwest before?

TR: Yeah. I’ve done a few theaters there. And the Parlor. I haven’t been there for like two and half years, but I’ve got a lot of fans – a lot of Twitter followers. They’re ready for me to come back. scene: So what can fans expect from your set?

TR: Some of the craziest rule-breaking you’ve scene. I’ll be performing with Faizon Love, and we always leave an impression.

For the love of love Despite bad rap, Romance genre tops popular fiction sales

In these stories, the plot revolves around the female lead getting what she wants - physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Krentz adds that another characteristic of modern romance novels is that they tend to focus on the importance of building relationships.

For far too long, romance novels have been pushed aside as fodder for lonely women - lusty tales of “salacious” sex. Despite the negative connotations, romance continues to be the best selling genre of fiction in the world - and several Northwest authors are at the heart of it’s success.

For New York Times bestselling author - and Seattle resident - Jayne Ann Krentz her love affair with literature started as a child.

“It was Nancy Drew that made me shell out my hard earned allowance,” Krentz says.

But it wasn’t until later in life, when she started to feel like something was missing in the books she read, that romance writing sparked her interest.

“Most of [the books I was reading] had male characters,” the Seattle-based author explains. “There were not many female leads.”

When the compulsion to tell the story her own way took over, Krentz decided to take the leap. With more than 20 years - and 35 million copies of her novels in print - Krentz has established herself as one of the most popular romance authors.

Romance vs feminism In the past, romance novels were labeled as counterproductive to feminism. Yet Krentz suggests romance novels actually serve to empower women, explaining at the core of every romance story is a strong woman.

She adds that many of the stereotypes given to Romance novels are based on the traditions of British romance novels. In these tales, popularized by publishers such as Harlequin, the plot often finds a young maid-type character running away with and marrying a powerful man. Krentz says this is generally not the crux of American romance novels - especially those in the suspense and mystery sub genres. She says romances written in this tradition relate more closely to the independent females like Audrey Hepburn and Vivien Leigh.

Author Jane Porter agrees that women in romance novels are strong, but disagrees with the negativity associated with “damsel-in-distress” plots. Porter, who recently relocated to Southern California after living in Bellevue for 17 years, is an award-winning novelist with over 5

“Really strong women often enjoy stories where the heroine is vulnerable,” Porter says. “They like the idea of being swept away by a strong male.”

She says just because women read stories that paint them as defenseless, it doesn’t mean that’s their reality - or that they want it to be.

“It’s fantasy,” Porter says.

Embracing romance Another factor that has contributed to the adverse perception of romance is the idea people are embarrassed to read them in public. Krentz says this has a lot to do with racy covers, many of which have been done away with as a result of evolving ideas and the presence of e-readers.

Porter says these perceptions also come from the assumption that romance novels are salacious and antiintellectual.

“But is happiness anti-intellectual?” Porter asks. “The media likes to slam women for reading stories with happy endings.”

Porter says the plots of romance novels - in all sub genres - have evolved. Specifically, Porter says the “bodice ripper” type stories characteristic of the 1970s and 1980s, don’t have an audience today.

“There’s an incredible amount of female empowerment,” Porter says. “They are no longer ‘heroic stories’ -

Speaking to the trends flooding the romance market currently, Krentz and P orter acknowledge that a lot of attention is being given to the paranormal-romance sub genre - stories about vampires, and werewolves and magic. Series like “50 Shades of Grey” have also spiked interest in erotica. According to the authors, these trends are nothing new.

“What goes around comes around,” says Krentz.

She cites the popularity of books like “Frankenstein” and “Dracula” as evidence that themes are frequently recycled. Porter cites Anne Rice’s venture in to erotica, writing under the pseudonym A. N. Roquelaure, as another example.

However, both say the paranormal genre is on it’s way out.

“It doesn’t have the same fire as it did five years ago,” Porter says.

As far as what’s looking to be the next big trend in romance, Krentz says there is a lot of buzz around “community relationship” books. She says these stories generally focus on a romantic relationship coming to be in a small American town.

These tales - popularized by authors including Debbie Macomber, Robyn Carr and Sherryl Woods - generally revolve around a community full of secrets. The town, Krentz says, often serves as its own character itself. She says stories about returning home from war have also been an up-and-coming trend in Romance.

“This always happens at times of war,” Krentz explains.

What sets these modern war novels apart is that, often times, the person coming home from war is a woman (ex: Kristen Hannah’s “Home Front.”)

Happy endings Despite the misperceptions, Krentz and Porter find comfort in the fact that their readers - well-educated, independent women looking to escape - keep coming back for more.

“In our society, smart women aren’t allowed to be too happy, too sexual, too intellectual,” Porter says.

She thinks this ideology needs to change - and that women need to continue to take control of what they want to read.

“In the end, were just trying to make the reader happy,” Porter says. “We’re just trying to release endorphins.”

If Krentz and Porter’s success are any indication, it’s a recipe that seems to be working.
